In 2013, in Shelby County v. Holder, the Supreme Court invalidates the part of the 1965 Voting Rights Act requiring certain states to submit changes in voting laws to the Justice Department for approval. Almost immediately, certain states take voter suppression measures such as enacting voter ID laws, redrawing district boundaries, and repealing same-day registration.
Three months before the 2016 election, a group of volunteers across the country mobilizes to work on voter protection — to observe elections and to assure that all those who wish to vote are legally allowed to do so. Laverne Berry, Steven Miller, and Claire Wright head to North Carolina. What they find at the polls serves as both a warning and a call to action for anyone interested in protecting the "One Man, One Vote" fundamental of our democracy.
Dealing with themes that are constantly sensationalized and manipulated by the media — Left vs. Right, North vs. South, Black vs. White — CAPTURING THE FLAG offers instead deeply personal, often surprising perspectives on the 2016 Presidential Election and its aftermath.
'A film every young adult needs to see. At a time when people across the nation are wondering how they can make a difference, this film says, yes, you can - here are some steps you can take.' Carly Mirabile and Melanie Hogue, Duke Arts, Duke University
'Capturing the Flag reveals the unglamorous role of activists who volunteer their time to do the nitty-gritty work of assisting regular people struggling through the voting process. Students and civic groups will be motivated by the film's central characters to step up their involvement in future elections.' Barry Burden, Professor of Political Science, Director of the Elections Research Center, University of Wisconsin-Madison
'The stories of these voters remind us that the heart of this fight is our shared human stake in our democracy - and Capturing The Flag serves both as a warning and a call to action to activists across the country who are ready to fiercely defend it.' Natasha Pinon, Ms. Magazine
'Capturing the Flag tells the story of four friends awakening to the contemporary assault on democracy, and discovering their own capacity to do something about it. The film is a good primer in citizen action that can be used to start a conversation among concerned citizens, from students to seniors, about what can be done and how we all can get involved in election protection work.' Dr. Lorraine Minnite, Associate Professor and Chair, Public Policy and Administration, Rutgers - The State University of New Jersey, Author, Keeping Down the Black Vote: Race and the Demobilization of American Voters
'Capturing the Flag captures many key elements of the dynamics of voter suppression and its implementation in North Carolina. And it reveals the subversive, anti-American qualities of voter suppression in an effective, personalized way.' Walter Salinger, former Director, The League of Women Voters of North Carolina
'An unbiased story that every American should see...Capturing The Flag demonstrates that democracy at its very core is continually being challenged.' Pamela Powell, Reel Honest Reviews
'I can read about voter suppression and hear about voter suppression, but seeing it unfold on screen is staggering in an entirely different way.' Full Frame Artistic Director Sadie Tillery quoted in PBS's DocSoup
'A microcosm of the passions, absurdities and contradictions of the U.S. election system...Director Anne de Mare's fascinating and sober documentary fights an undercurrent of foregone conclusion, but provides pointed insights into our election system and the soldiers who take up the challenges of making votes count.' Marvin Brown, Quik Flix Hit
'An important film to watch!' Joe Corey, Inside Pulse
'The subtlety with which this kind of suppression happens is significant. It's not as stark as a poll tax or a literacy test. It's a lot of little things that can add up to a big thing.' Jeffrey Billman, The INDY
'This documentary captures the human consequences of legislative changes which embody the cutting edge of aggressive voter suppression efforts at the state level. In addition to illustrating the impact of voter registration purges, the overall complexity, confusion, and hassle of the voting process for some voters is revealed. An excellent tool for illustrating multiple levels of problems with the current structure and the laws governing our elections.' Dr. Keith Bentele, Associate Professor of Sociology, Director of Applied Sociology, University of Massachusetts - Boston

00:00:02.097 --> 00:00:05.097
[ambient music]
00:00:36.133 --> 00:00:38.187
- Hi, my name is Laverne Berry,
00:00:38.187 --> 00:00:43.104
and I am a lawyer who has done voter protection in the past
00:00:44.422 --> 00:00:48.209
and I wanted to get some information about
00:00:48.209 --> 00:00:53.042
how you were recruiting for lawyers for the 2016 election.
00:00:55.034 --> 00:00:57.843
- Here\'s a map called Suppressing the Right to Vote.
00:00:57.843 --> 00:01:02.356
States with new voting restrictions since 2010.
00:01:02.356 --> 00:01:04.284
Here are the key states to watch.
00:01:04.284 --> 00:01:06.270
North Carolina.
00:01:06.270 --> 00:01:08.152
Kansas and Arizona.
00:01:08.152 --> 00:01:08.985
Texas.
00:01:10.076 --> 00:01:11.229
Wisconsin.
00:01:11.229 --> 00:01:14.229
[ambient music]
00:01:19.841 --> 00:01:21.600
- Good afternoon.
00:01:21.600 --> 00:01:24.164
Today, the United States Supreme Court
00:01:24.164 --> 00:01:28.373
announced its decision in the case of Shelby County v Holder
00:01:28.373 --> 00:01:32.341
and invalidated an essential part of the Voting Rights Act,
00:01:32.341 --> 00:01:35.453
a cornerstone of American Civil Rights law.
00:01:35.453 --> 00:01:39.269
- It is wrong, deadly wrong,
00:01:39.269 --> 00:01:43.209
to deny any of your fellow Americans
00:01:44.537 --> 00:01:47.261
the right to vote in this country.
00:01:47.261 --> 00:01:49.678
[applauding]
00:01:51.192 --> 00:01:53.272
- [Reporter] It\'s considered one of the most important
00:01:53.272 --> 00:01:56.427
pieces of civil rights legislation ever passed,
00:01:56.427 --> 00:01:59.207
but by five to four, the U.S. Supreme Court today
00:01:59.207 --> 00:02:02.467
took the teeth out of a law enacted nearly 50 years ago.
00:02:02.467 --> 00:02:03.624
- [Reporter] The heart of this law
00:02:03.624 --> 00:02:06.633
is the extraordinary exercise of federal power,
00:02:06.633 --> 00:02:10.384
which the Congress in 1965 said was necessary to put
00:02:10.384 --> 00:02:13.970
whole states under the supervision of the Justice Department
00:02:13.970 --> 00:02:16.407
and the federal courts, states that had demonstrated
00:02:16.407 --> 00:02:20.491
vicious efforts to prevent black people from voting.
00:02:20.491 --> 00:02:21.867
- [Reporter] Within weeks of the Supreme Court
00:02:21.867 --> 00:02:24.331
striking down Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act,
00:02:24.331 --> 00:02:26.927
several states moved forward with new restrictions.
00:02:26.927 --> 00:02:28.940
- [Reporter] Texas sought to redraw the boundaries
00:02:28.940 --> 00:02:31.176
for congressional and state house districts
00:02:31.176 --> 00:02:33.992
the very day the Supreme Court ruled.
00:02:33.992 --> 00:02:37.260
- I have a friend who lives in Baltimore
00:02:37.260 --> 00:02:39.847
and there\'s lots of issues in Baltimore
00:02:39.847 --> 00:02:41.873
with African American votes,
00:02:41.873 --> 00:02:45.846
so she\'s figuring out what to do in her town
00:02:45.846 --> 00:02:48.403
and she\'s already doing that.
00:02:48.403 --> 00:02:53.321
- We\'re there to observe and protect voting rights.
00:02:53.321 --> 00:02:55.323
We\'re helping everyone who wants to vote
00:02:55.323 --> 00:02:57.044
and that\'s an important part of what we\'re doing.
00:02:57.044 --> 00:02:58.759
I mean, it\'s about the voting rights,
00:02:58.759 --> 00:03:01.953
not about the political agenda.
00:03:01.953 --> 00:03:05.281
- Did you just have to vote by a provisional ballot?
00:03:05.281 --> 00:03:07.633
I do voter protection work
00:03:07.633 --> 00:03:11.619
because we\'re the United States of America.
00:03:11.619 --> 00:03:13.052
One man,
00:03:14.417 --> 00:03:15.939
one vote.
00:03:15.939 --> 00:03:19.599
That\'s our definition of democracy
00:03:19.599 --> 00:03:23.766
and then we don\'t give the one man the vote, then,
00:03:25.069 --> 00:03:26.157
big fat lie.
00:03:26.157 --> 00:03:28.863
I mean, you have to make sure that
00:03:28.863 --> 00:03:31.190
the one man gets the one vote.
00:03:31.190 --> 00:03:34.085
- [Reporter] North Carolina is the latest of several states
00:03:34.085 --> 00:03:36.643
with Republican controlled legislatures
00:03:36.643 --> 00:03:39.262
moving to tighten voter rules.
00:03:39.262 --> 00:03:41.370
- If it really is North Carolina,
00:03:41.370 --> 00:03:46.370
which it\'s sounding more and more like it is, the other
00:03:46.757 --> 00:03:49.257
issue is kind of where.
00:03:49.970 --> 00:03:51.273
- [Steve] I wanna do a little more digging,
00:03:51.273 --> 00:03:55.020
they always mention that there\'re five, ten counties
00:03:55.020 --> 00:03:57.081
where there are some real games being played
00:03:57.081 --> 00:04:00.041
and some nefarious activities already being uncovered.
00:04:00.041 --> 00:04:04.798
- We know that we all feel comfortable about North Carolina
00:04:04.798 --> 00:04:07.788
unless we\'re pulled in another direction?
00:04:07.788 --> 00:04:08.621
- Right.
- Yes.
00:04:08.621 --> 00:04:09.973
- [Steve] Well, that sounds good.
00:04:09.973 --> 00:04:12.973
[percussive piano music]
00:04:32.725 --> 00:04:35.642
[jazzy guitar music]
00:04:41.971 --> 00:04:44.971
- People volunteer in a lot of ways.
00:04:47.094 --> 00:04:51.069
I work for everyone to be able to vote.
00:04:52.019 --> 00:04:56.357
If you\'re voting for someone that I don\'t like,
00:04:56.357 --> 00:05:00.022
I still have to work for you to be able to vote.
00:05:00.964 --> 00:05:03.963
And there\'s a lot of reasons for that
00:05:04.671 --> 00:05:08.237
and I think the biggest one is...
00:05:09.485 --> 00:05:10.318
...that...
00:05:11.893 --> 00:05:14.060
...you\'re never gonna hear me
00:05:14.924 --> 00:05:16.932
if I don\'t let you
00:05:18.189 --> 00:05:20.606
exercise your own conscience.
00:05:24.730 --> 00:05:27.730
- [Announcer] ...airport, next stop is...
00:05:28.566 --> 00:05:31.230
- I\'ve been getting so many emails, all kinds of stories
00:05:31.230 --> 00:05:35.065
from North Carolina about crap going on already.
00:05:35.065 --> 00:05:38.270
Laverne and I met because we were both working together
00:05:38.270 --> 00:05:40.852
at Channel 13 WNET,
00:05:40.852 --> 00:05:43.274
the public television station in New York
00:05:43.274 --> 00:05:44.629
and I don\'t know what happened,
00:05:44.629 --> 00:05:46.760
but you know day one that we met,
00:05:46.760 --> 00:05:49.705
and when I first started there and we had our first meeting,
00:05:49.705 --> 00:05:53.211
we basically became friends for life.
00:05:53.211 --> 00:05:56.095
We started doing voting rights work in 2008.
00:05:56.095 --> 00:05:59.342
I\'m interested to see what it\'s gonna be like to go back
00:05:59.342 --> 00:06:02.980
to North Carolina and compare our experience eight years ago
00:06:02.980 --> 00:06:07.134
to what\'s gonna happen this time eight years later
00:06:07.134 --> 00:06:09.547
without the protections of the Voting Rights Act.
00:06:09.547 --> 00:06:12.906
And my friend Trista just wrote to me.
00:06:12.906 --> 00:06:15.430
She read my email and she\'s trying to find
00:06:15.430 --> 00:06:16.820
a flight to North Carolina.
00:06:16.820 --> 00:06:18.738
She wants to do something.
00:06:18.738 --> 00:06:20.699
- It was very powerful for me
00:06:20.699 --> 00:06:23.821
that I received this invitation from Steve and Laverne.
00:06:23.821 --> 00:06:26.245
Lemme take one of those.
00:06:26.245 --> 00:06:28.714
It seemed like a very concrete thing to do
00:06:28.714 --> 00:06:31.427
voter protection work and to try and help make
00:06:31.427 --> 00:06:34.464
the \"one person, one vote\" mean something.
00:06:34.464 --> 00:06:37.591
I\'ve never participated in a U.S. election.
00:06:37.591 --> 00:06:40.320
I\'ve never been to North Carolina.
00:06:40.320 --> 00:06:43.765
I feel a little bit like I\'m stepping off a cliff.
00:06:43.765 --> 00:06:46.369
People on the ground are already reporting
00:06:46.369 --> 00:06:50.063
suppression of the vote and black people and poor people
00:06:50.063 --> 00:06:52.396
being prevented from voting.
00:06:58.809 --> 00:07:02.374
- North Carolina is a Southern state that suffers
00:07:02.374 --> 00:07:05.791
from a legacy of Jim Crow racism,
00:07:06.494 --> 00:07:11.494
and our voting laws are very much part of that legacy.
00:07:11.510 --> 00:07:14.253
In 2013 when the US Supreme Court
00:07:14.253 --> 00:07:16.738
gutted Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act,
00:07:16.738 --> 00:07:20.088
our legislature decided not only to move ahead
00:07:20.088 --> 00:07:22.738
with a strict Voter ID law,
00:07:22.738 --> 00:07:26.287
but to pass other voter restrictions in the same bill
00:07:26.287 --> 00:07:30.227
that significantly altered voting in North Carolina.
00:07:30.227 --> 00:07:32.797
This law was comprehensive.
00:07:32.797 --> 00:07:34.650
It was passed very quickly.
00:07:34.650 --> 00:07:38.207
It was highly partisan and it was immediately challenged
00:07:38.207 --> 00:07:42.696
by the NAACP and voting rights groups in North Carolina.
00:07:42.696 --> 00:07:46.061
- As soon as they passed this monster suppression bill,
00:07:46.061 --> 00:07:49.590
we immediately went to court to battle against that
00:07:49.590 --> 00:07:53.152
to make sure that that did not negatively impact
00:07:53.152 --> 00:07:56.351
the opportunity for African Americans to come out and vote.
00:07:56.351 --> 00:07:58.653
- We knew it was being challenged in court,
00:07:58.653 --> 00:08:00.805
and we knew something was probably gonna change
00:08:00.805 --> 00:08:01.763
before election day,
00:08:01.763 --> 00:08:03.845
so how do we even prepare for election day
00:08:03.845 --> 00:08:07.073
not knowing what laws are gonna be in effect?
00:08:07.073 --> 00:08:11.047
- The court held that what the legislature was trying to do
00:08:11.047 --> 00:08:13.882
was unconstitutional and they determined
00:08:13.882 --> 00:08:15.727
that with surgical precision,
00:08:15.727 --> 00:08:19.178
they had undermined or sought to undermine the ability
00:08:19.178 --> 00:08:20.979
of the African Americans to vote
00:08:20.979 --> 00:08:24.545
and to participate in the political franchise.
00:08:24.545 --> 00:08:27.928
- What happens in North Carolina is going to
00:08:27.928 --> 00:08:30.668
be very important for what happens in the whole country
00:08:30.668 --> 00:08:33.413
because I think the efforts by the legislature here
00:08:33.413 --> 00:08:36.609
to suppress votes and to target particular parts
00:08:36.609 --> 00:08:40.895
of the population are so blatant, so shameless
00:08:40.895 --> 00:08:45.821
that this is kind of the test ground for voter rights.
00:09:14.004 --> 00:09:16.453
Hi, Liz, it\'s Steve Miller calling.
00:09:16.453 --> 00:09:20.303
I\'m on my way from Raleigh down to Fayetteville
00:09:20.303 --> 00:09:22.900
with Laverne Berry and Claire Wright
00:09:22.900 --> 00:09:24.678
and we have a couple of questions for you
00:09:24.678 --> 00:09:26.906
about some issues that might come up.
00:09:26.906 --> 00:09:28.575
- Oh, that\'s \'cause that\'s all on the form.
00:09:28.575 --> 00:09:30.620
- That\'s all on the form.
00:09:30.620 --> 00:09:33.793
Once we decided that we were gonna go to North Carolina,
00:09:33.793 --> 00:09:36.649
we reached out to the local Democratic party
00:09:36.649 --> 00:09:40.353
because we knew that they organize lawyers
00:09:40.353 --> 00:09:42.686
to do voter protection work.
00:09:45.329 --> 00:09:49.285
- So this is the note that Liz sent out.
00:09:49.285 --> 00:09:51.368
- Can you speak up a bit?
00:09:52.753 --> 00:09:53.586
- Okay.
00:09:53.586 --> 00:09:57.079
This is the email that Liz sent out this morning
00:09:57.079 --> 00:10:00.770
to everybody who\'s doing poll observing
00:10:00.770 --> 00:10:04.606
in the southeastern region for early voting.
00:10:04.606 --> 00:10:06.092
Now what surprised me,
00:10:06.092 --> 00:10:08.915
I don\'t know what the southeastern region is,
00:10:08.915 --> 00:10:11.773
but this must be out of state people.
00:10:11.773 --> 00:10:14.891
Because there\'re only eight and we\'re three of the eight.
00:10:14.891 --> 00:10:15.800
- Right.
00:10:15.800 --> 00:10:19.060
- So, she writes, \"Please find below
00:10:19.060 --> 00:10:21.841
all the training materials and resources you need
00:10:21.841 --> 00:10:24.258
to be an effective observer.
00:10:24.258 --> 00:10:27.036
You can always contact me with questions, concerns,
00:10:27.036 --> 00:10:28.839
on my cell,\" and then she has the number,
00:10:28.839 --> 00:10:30.480
which is the one I just tried calling.
00:10:30.480 --> 00:10:31.514
- Okay.
00:10:31.514 --> 00:10:34.514
[piano music]
00:10:45.348 --> 00:10:48.040
- [Reporter] NAACP claims the State Board of Elections
00:10:48.040 --> 00:10:49.800
and three county boards are removing
00:10:49.800 --> 00:10:52.705
thousands of people from voter rolls illegally.
00:10:52.705 --> 00:10:53.567
- In Cumberland County,
00:10:53.567 --> 00:10:57.292
you have 4,000 people have been purged
00:10:58.021 --> 00:10:59.120
from the rolls.
00:10:59.120 --> 00:11:00.723
- [Reporter] A lawsuit was filed in federal court
00:11:00.723 --> 00:11:02.881
that claims the boards of election in Beaufort,
00:11:02.881 --> 00:11:06.382
Moore and Cumberland Counties canceled registrations
00:11:06.382 --> 00:11:10.593
only because the voters had mail returned as undeliverable.
00:11:10.593 --> 00:11:12.990
- [Jimmy] We have a gentleman that sent an absentee ballot.
00:11:12.990 --> 00:11:14.289
He was removed from the rolls.
00:11:14.289 --> 00:11:15.786
- Yeah, if you send in an absentee ballot
00:11:15.786 --> 00:11:17.265
and you\'re removed from the vote, you never know.
00:11:17.265 --> 00:11:20.355
- Yeah, no.
- We found it out in time.
00:11:20.355 --> 00:11:22.224
Plus, we\'ve had another couple of people
00:11:22.224 --> 00:11:24.657
that actually called before they went to vote
00:11:24.657 --> 00:11:26.569
and found out they were removed.
00:11:26.569 --> 00:11:28.971
We waitin\' on the judge ruling now.
00:11:28.971 --> 00:11:30.390
- I\'m just wondering best-case scenario
00:11:30.390 --> 00:11:32.477
what could that order say though?
00:11:32.477 --> 00:11:34.784
That has the practical effect of saving...
00:11:34.784 --> 00:11:37.209
- Well, it could have all those peoples\' vote
00:11:37.209 --> 00:11:39.197
by provisional ballot at least.
00:11:39.197 --> 00:11:40.392
- [Steve] Rather than be turned away.
00:11:40.392 --> 00:11:44.337
- We went to court back in the summer and we won.
00:11:44.337 --> 00:11:46.539
It allowed them to have same-day registration to vote
00:11:46.539 --> 00:11:47.540
\'cause you know they cut that out.
00:11:47.540 --> 00:11:48.373
- Right.
00:11:48.373 --> 00:11:50.326
- People affected by this
00:11:50.326 --> 00:11:52.635
can same-day register and vote still.
00:11:52.635 --> 00:11:53.468
- Right.
00:11:53.468 --> 00:11:54.301
- Just today, right?
00:11:54.301 --> 00:11:55.631
- [Steve and Laverne] Today and tomorrow.
00:11:55.631 --> 00:11:57.725
- [Steve] What happens on Tuesday?
00:11:57.725 --> 00:11:58.882
- [Jimmy] On Tuesday?
00:11:58.882 --> 00:12:00.769
Provisional ballot\'s the only way they can go.
00:12:00.769 --> 00:12:02.279
- And they will be allowed to do that?
00:12:02.279 --> 00:12:04.088
- Well, that\'s what we have to wait and see.
00:12:04.088 --> 00:12:05.961
- Well, as long as there\'s a question,
00:12:05.961 --> 00:12:08.227
you can request a provisional ballot.
00:12:08.227 --> 00:12:09.504
Now whether or not they gonna look at them,
00:12:09.504 --> 00:12:11.609
they don\'t, that\'s the question.
00:12:11.609 --> 00:12:12.548
Look, I\'ve got to run.
00:12:12.548 --> 00:12:14.780
- Oh, well, it was very nice to meet you.
00:12:14.780 --> 00:12:15.613
- Alright now.
00:12:15.613 --> 00:12:16.446
Nice meetin\' you all.
00:12:16.446 --> 00:12:17.279
- Yeah, good luck.
00:12:17.279 --> 00:12:18.730
- [Laverne] It\'s kind of mind-boggling
00:12:18.730 --> 00:12:23.730
that there are different voting rules in different states.
00:12:24.380 --> 00:12:28.732
What you need to be able to register is different
00:12:28.732 --> 00:12:31.560
and some places you can vote early
00:12:31.560 --> 00:12:34.948
and some places you can only vote on election day.
00:12:34.948 --> 00:12:38.657
It\'s so daunting sometimes.
00:12:40.927 --> 00:12:42.721
- Hey, here\'s Trista.
00:12:42.721 --> 00:12:44.686
Hi, how are you?
00:12:44.686 --> 00:12:47.212
- [Trista] I\'m TD Mitchell, or Trista.
00:12:47.212 --> 00:12:52.173
Steve is sort of like my gay big brother/uncle politically.
00:12:52.173 --> 00:12:53.006
- Laverne.
00:12:53.006 --> 00:12:54.228
- Hi, doll!
00:12:54.228 --> 00:12:56.005
- Hi, nice to...
- How you doin\'?
00:12:56.005 --> 00:12:57.014
- Nice to see you.
00:12:57.014 --> 00:12:57.847
- Great to see you.
00:12:57.847 --> 00:13:00.506
- I think that it\'s so amazing you just got
00:13:00.506 --> 00:13:02.664
on a plane and came.
- A plane and came down.
00:13:02.664 --> 00:13:04.023
- It\'s gotta be done.
00:13:04.023 --> 00:13:06.922
Well, I\'ve been clicking back and forth, website to website,
00:13:06.922 --> 00:13:09.627
trying to figure out where I could be most useful.
00:13:09.627 --> 00:13:12.093
And I click over to my email and there\'s Steve\'s email,
00:13:12.093 --> 00:13:14.780
and, oh, he\'s on his way to North Carolina.
00:13:14.780 --> 00:13:15.613
Oh!
00:13:16.665 --> 00:13:17.498
- Ah!
00:13:17.498 --> 00:13:18.331
Okay, here we go.
00:13:18.331 --> 00:13:19.164
- Okay.
00:13:19.164 --> 00:13:19.997
Turn up.
00:13:20.946 --> 00:13:22.529
Is the pullout not...?
00:13:24.644 --> 00:13:25.477
Oh.
00:13:25.477 --> 00:13:26.596
That doesn\'t pull out.
00:13:26.596 --> 00:13:28.043
- That pulls out.
- It does?
00:13:28.043 --> 00:13:29.447
- Yeah that\'s--
- In theory.
00:13:29.447 --> 00:13:30.280
Reputedly.
00:13:30.280 --> 00:13:31.172
Allegedly.
00:13:31.172 --> 00:13:32.937
- Okay.
- Is it cold in here to you?
00:13:32.937 --> 00:13:33.884
- Yes.
- I\'m freezing, right?
00:13:33.884 --> 00:13:36.118
- Well, I\'m wearing a coat.
00:13:36.118 --> 00:13:36.951
- Yeah.
00:13:36.951 --> 00:13:38.329
- So right now, what\'s happening?
00:13:38.329 --> 00:13:40.683
Right now, we\'re just gonna unpack and--
00:13:40.683 --> 00:13:42.099
- [Steve] I wanna just like settle in here
00:13:42.099 --> 00:13:44.431
for a minute and--
00:13:44.431 --> 00:13:45.264
- Okay.
00:13:45.264 --> 00:13:47.961
- I\'m gonna pull up my little
00:13:47.961 --> 00:13:50.406
handout flyer design-y thing.
- Oh yeah.
00:13:50.406 --> 00:13:51.364
I\'d like to look at that.
- Yeah.
00:13:51.364 --> 00:13:52.197
- [Steve] I\'d like to look at it.
00:13:52.197 --> 00:13:53.030
- So, and see if you,
00:13:53.030 --> 00:13:55.275
what feedback you guys have.
- Okay.
00:13:55.883 --> 00:13:57.753
- So, all the other stuff they\'re gonna see
00:13:57.753 --> 00:13:59.414
is gonna say \"Make your vote count,\"
00:13:59.414 --> 00:14:00.890
\"Make sure your voice is heard,\"
00:14:00.890 --> 00:14:03.372
you know, whatever, for this candidate,
00:14:03.372 --> 00:14:06.005
but what we\'re really saying is we\'re here to help.
00:14:06.005 --> 00:14:06.838
Do you know what I mean?
00:14:06.838 --> 00:14:10.177
- Yes, but some people don\'t know they need help
00:14:10.177 --> 00:14:12.309
because they think they\'re on the rolls.
00:14:12.309 --> 00:14:13.611
They\'ve always voted.
00:14:13.611 --> 00:14:16.194
They don\'t know they need help.
00:14:18.081 --> 00:14:21.374
- Our aim should be to compel the person to do something.
00:14:21.374 --> 00:14:23.874
So, it needs to say, you know,
00:14:24.861 --> 00:14:26.800
I don\'t wanna make everybody paranoid,
00:14:26.800 --> 00:14:28.974
but, like, \"Are you sure you\'re registered?
00:14:28.974 --> 00:14:32.384
Check today.\" And tell them where to check.
00:14:32.384 --> 00:14:34.298
My feelings about what this country stood for,
00:14:34.298 --> 00:14:36.538
when I looked at it from afar,
00:14:36.538 --> 00:14:38.935
I was practicing law in South Africa at a time
00:14:38.935 --> 00:14:43.517
where we got a constitution and democracy in 1994.
00:14:43.517 --> 00:14:45.693
And there was a brand-new constitution
00:14:45.693 --> 00:14:47.748
and hadn\'t yet been interpreted by our courts
00:14:47.748 --> 00:14:50.951
and we looked to the United States a lot for precedent.
00:14:50.951 --> 00:14:53.085
You know, like what is being done here,
00:14:53.085 --> 00:14:54.887
what is freedom of expression mean here?
00:14:54.887 --> 00:14:58.105
What does \"one person, one vote\" mean here?
00:14:58.105 --> 00:15:02.538
I thought that it was now,
00:15:02.538 --> 00:15:05.471
after the Civil Rights Movement,
00:15:05.472 --> 00:15:08.722
it was an egalitarian society.
00:15:11.447 --> 00:15:15.947
Living here has made me realize that it is not at all.
00:15:18.325 --> 00:15:20.350
- [Laverne] If we don\'t have it, we don\'t have it.
00:15:20.350 --> 00:15:22.014
- I am a little worried about you today
00:15:22.014 --> 00:15:24.279
out there in that place we saw last night.
00:15:24.279 --> 00:15:28.063
- Well, yeah, it\'s gonna be different
00:15:28.063 --> 00:15:31.646
and I\'m certainly gonna stand out, I think.
00:15:38.221 --> 00:15:40.301
When we were driving around last night
00:15:40.301 --> 00:15:43.260
there were no signs for democrats
00:15:43.260 --> 00:15:47.706
and I saw the end of the people who were out there.
00:15:47.706 --> 00:15:52.389
They were all white and, you know,
00:15:52.902 --> 00:15:54.814
I\'m wondering what my day is gonna be like.
00:15:54.814 --> 00:15:57.917
- Yeah, and I would feel better if I were there with you.
00:15:57.917 --> 00:15:59.116
- [Laverne] I mean, the other thing is,
00:15:59.116 --> 00:16:01.342
you can\'t make an assumption
00:16:01.342 --> 00:16:04.133
because that\'s part of the problem
00:16:04.133 --> 00:16:06.579
with this particular election.
00:16:07.154 --> 00:16:07.987
- Yeah.
00:16:07.987 --> 00:16:10.282
- People are jumping to conclusions.
00:16:10.282 --> 00:16:12.734
They\'re making assumptions about other people,
00:16:12.734 --> 00:16:14.849
so that\'s the scarier part.
00:16:14.849 --> 00:16:17.307
Someone might look at me and think,
00:16:17.307 --> 00:16:19.632
\"Well, she\'s not here to help me,\"
00:16:19.632 --> 00:16:22.300
and the fact is, I am there to help them.
00:16:22.300 --> 00:16:23.133
- Right.
00:16:28.394 --> 00:16:29.269
Okay.
00:16:29.269 --> 00:16:30.102
- Okay.
00:16:30.102 --> 00:16:30.935
- Good luck.
00:16:30.935 --> 00:16:31.768
We\'ll stay in touch?
00:16:31.768 --> 00:16:32.759
- Yeah, we\'ll stay in touch.
00:16:32.759 --> 00:16:33.799
- Got your back?
00:16:33.799 --> 00:16:35.379
- Got your back.
- Got your back.
00:16:35.379 --> 00:16:36.212
Good luck.
00:16:37.641 --> 00:16:38.540
Alright.
00:16:38.540 --> 00:16:39.373
See you.
00:16:52.700 --> 00:16:53.921
- [Laverne] Good morning.
00:16:53.921 --> 00:16:54.783
- [Man] How you doin\' this morning?
00:16:54.783 --> 00:16:56.175
- I\'m fine, thank you.
00:16:56.175 --> 00:17:01.175
Is the judge for today\'s early voting inside?
00:17:01.195 --> 00:17:03.012
- Yes, ma\'am, she is. And you are?
00:17:03.012 --> 00:17:04.772
- My name is Laverne Berry.
00:17:04.772 --> 00:17:05.980
- Hello.
00:17:05.980 --> 00:17:07.115
- Hello, hi.
00:17:07.115 --> 00:17:08.877
Nice to meet you.
00:17:08.877 --> 00:17:10.205
I\'m here--
00:17:10.205 --> 00:17:13.553
I\'m a lawyer and I\'m here just in case
00:17:13.553 --> 00:17:16.828
anyone has any questions or has any--
00:17:16.828 --> 00:17:20.914
- Okay, you\'ll need to speak to Miss Irene.
00:17:20.914 --> 00:17:21.747
- Irene?
00:17:21.747 --> 00:17:23.497
- And she\'s in there.
00:17:23.497 --> 00:17:24.663
- Okay, great.
00:17:24.663 --> 00:17:26.163
Thank you so much.
00:17:31.394 --> 00:17:35.350
- Part of North Carolina law allows each political party
00:17:35.350 --> 00:17:38.490
in every polling place to place observers there
00:17:38.490 --> 00:17:41.800
for the entirety of the election,
00:17:41.800 --> 00:17:44.615
so during early voting they can have a representative there
00:17:44.615 --> 00:17:47.203
to watch and see what\'s going on.
00:17:47.203 --> 00:17:48.911
In order to be on the inside,
00:17:48.911 --> 00:17:53.393
you have to be a registered voter in that particular county.
00:17:53.393 --> 00:17:58.318
On the outside, anybody can work with the voting process.
00:18:00.729 --> 00:18:02.989
- I just wanted to make one little announcement.
00:18:02.989 --> 00:18:05.448
I am a lawyer,
00:18:06.567 --> 00:18:09.940
and I\'ve been assigned to answer questions,
00:18:09.940 --> 00:18:13.730
so if you have a question that they can\'t answer inside
00:18:13.730 --> 00:18:18.730
for some reason or the line gets too long or gets too busy,
00:18:18.836 --> 00:18:21.493
I can try and help you through that,
00:18:21.493 --> 00:18:25.326
no matter which party, please come and see me.
00:18:26.649 --> 00:18:28.875
- I\'ll say that I did notice
00:18:28.875 --> 00:18:31.792
when I would approach black people,
00:18:32.675 --> 00:18:34.311
there were some who were, like,
00:18:34.311 --> 00:18:36.786
\"Who\'s this guy and what\'s he coming to talk to me about?\"
00:18:36.786 --> 00:18:37.619
- Um hm.
- Right.
00:18:37.619 --> 00:18:38.452
- Because I\'m white.
00:18:38.452 --> 00:18:40.118
Did you feel that too?
- Yeah.
00:18:40.118 --> 00:18:42.997
- And I had to immediately figure out
00:18:42.997 --> 00:18:46.958
how to break through that and get trust
00:18:46.958 --> 00:18:49.585
so that they would talk to me because there was some,
00:18:49.585 --> 00:18:51.909
\"Who\'s this white guy coming to talk,\" I really felt that.
00:18:51.909 --> 00:18:54.224
- I wasn\'t sure if it was whether I was white
00:18:54.224 --> 00:18:58.476
or whether they couldn\'t figure out which party?
00:18:58.476 --> 00:19:00.841
- [Steve] Yeah, I think it was partly that.
00:19:00.841 --> 00:19:01.999
That was tied to it for me too.
00:19:01.999 --> 00:19:02.832
- Yeah.
00:19:02.832 --> 00:19:07.466
- I don\'t think that someone white talked to me
00:19:08.001 --> 00:19:11.926
until people that were under 40
00:19:11.926 --> 00:19:13.522
started coming to the polls.
00:19:13.522 --> 00:19:14.355
- [Steve] Really?
00:19:14.355 --> 00:19:15.327
Wow.
- That\'s interesting.
00:19:15.327 --> 00:19:17.048
- And then when people were under 40 started
00:19:17.048 --> 00:19:19.658
coming to the polls and I started making announcements,
00:19:19.658 --> 00:19:22.405
then they started coming to talk to me.
00:19:22.405 --> 00:19:25.119
So there are a lot of different things
00:19:25.119 --> 00:19:28.088
of age and race coming into play.
00:19:28.088 --> 00:19:30.018
Hi, my name\'s Laverne.
- Hi.
00:19:30.018 --> 00:19:32.768
[crowd cheering]
00:19:58.472 --> 00:20:01.270
- I spent a lot of time in North Carolina.
00:20:01.270 --> 00:20:04.856
It\'s good to be at Fayetteville State University.
00:20:04.856 --> 00:20:07.106
[cheering]
00:20:10.059 --> 00:20:11.125
Are you fired up?
00:20:11.125 --> 00:20:12.914
- [Crowd] Yeah!
00:20:12.914 --> 00:20:14.219
- Are your ready to go?
00:20:14.219 --> 00:20:16.212
- [Crowd] Yeah!
00:20:16.212 --> 00:20:19.789
- Don\'t fall for the easy cynicism that tells ya,
00:20:19.789 --> 00:20:21.994
\"Politics doesn\'t matter, my vote doesn\'t matter.\"
00:20:21.994 --> 00:20:22.827
\"They\'re all crooked.\"
00:20:22.827 --> 00:20:23.843
\"It\'s all the same.\"
00:20:23.843 --> 00:20:26.430
They want you to think that way so you don\'t vote.
00:20:26.430 --> 00:20:28.023
- [Woman] We\'re voting!
00:20:28.023 --> 00:20:31.283
- And I know sometimes at the end of campaigns,
00:20:31.283 --> 00:20:34.835
there are so many negative ads on TV.
00:20:34.835 --> 00:20:36.747
There is so much noise.
00:20:36.747 --> 00:20:38.339
So much distraction.
00:20:38.339 --> 00:20:41.506
[cheering and booing]
00:20:43.440 --> 00:20:44.273
Hey, listen!
00:20:44.273 --> 00:20:46.856
Listen, listen, listen, listen!
00:20:48.156 --> 00:20:51.795
Everybody sit down and be quiet for a second.
00:20:51.795 --> 00:20:55.628
Everybody sit down and be quiet for a second.
00:20:56.995 --> 00:20:58.489
Now listen up!
00:20:58.489 --> 00:20:59.322
I\'m serious.
00:20:59.322 --> 00:21:00.155
Listen up.
00:21:01.273 --> 00:21:03.227
You\'ve got an older gentleman
00:21:03.227 --> 00:21:05.887
who is supporting his candidate.
00:21:06.562 --> 00:21:08.312
He not doing nothin\'.
00:21:09.887 --> 00:21:12.720
You don\'t have to worry about him.
00:21:14.469 --> 00:21:18.003
This is what I mean about folks not being focused.
00:21:19.571 --> 00:21:23.738
First of all, first of all, we let-- hold up.
00:21:26.300 --> 00:21:28.192
First of all,
00:21:28.192 --> 00:21:30.600
we live in a country that respects free speech.
00:21:30.600 --> 00:21:32.253
[cheering]
00:21:32.253 --> 00:21:33.086
So,
00:21:34.128 --> 00:21:35.207
second of all,
00:21:35.207 --> 00:21:37.844
it looks like maybe he might\'ve served in our military
00:21:37.844 --> 00:21:39.945
and we gotta respect that.
00:21:40.478 --> 00:21:41.425
Third of all,
00:21:41.425 --> 00:21:44.643
he was elderly and we gotta respect our elders.
00:21:45.826 --> 00:21:48.851
And fourth of all, don\'t boo--
00:21:49.376 --> 00:21:50.314
- [Crowd] Vote!
00:21:50.314 --> 00:21:51.147
- Vote!
00:21:52.169 --> 00:21:53.002
Don\'t boo.
00:21:54.262 --> 00:21:55.451
Vote!
00:21:55.451 --> 00:21:56.284
Come on!
00:21:56.284 --> 00:21:57.317
[cheering]
00:21:59.700 --> 00:22:00.899
- [Trista] Laverne?
00:22:00.899 --> 00:22:02.471
- [Laverne] Yeah?
00:22:02.471 --> 00:22:04.459
- Claire just found a section that says
00:22:04.459 --> 00:22:06.748
if they\'re picking up an absentee ballot,
00:22:06.748 --> 00:22:10.331
they need to pick one up by 5:00 p.m. today
00:22:11.293 --> 00:22:14.793
and then turn it in by 5:00 p.m. tomorrow.
00:22:20.983 --> 00:22:21.816
- Okay.
00:22:26.001 --> 00:22:28.294
- Are we sort of clear on the challenges thing?
00:22:28.294 --> 00:22:30.456
I mean, it seems that it\'s a very serious
00:22:30.456 --> 00:22:32.400
and difficult thing to make a challenge.
00:22:32.400 --> 00:22:36.136
- One voter cannot challenge another voter\'s
00:22:36.136 --> 00:22:38.083
right to vote on the day of.
00:22:38.083 --> 00:22:40.714
- [Claire] So no one can challenge anyone?
00:22:40.714 --> 00:22:42.768
- [Laverne] Are you sure about that?
00:22:42.768 --> 00:22:46.485
- We run the North Carolina state call line
00:22:46.485 --> 00:22:48.349
and that\'s in connection with
00:22:48.349 --> 00:22:51.213
the Lawyers\' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law.
00:22:51.213 --> 00:22:54.172
I don\'t know that we\'ve gone into any other election
00:22:54.172 --> 00:22:57.539
that I can remember not knowing at least several months
00:22:57.539 --> 00:23:02.093
if not years what the law of the day would be.
00:23:02.093 --> 00:23:05.053
It\'s very unfortunate that the state is in such a position
00:23:05.053 --> 00:23:06.724
for such an important election
00:23:06.724 --> 00:23:10.131
and unfortunately our laws continue to morph.
00:23:10.131 --> 00:23:12.946
- [Reporter] NAACP pushed today for people to vote
00:23:12.946 --> 00:23:14.504
during a rally in Fayetteville.
00:23:14.504 --> 00:23:17.160
This comes after a judge ruled on Friday
00:23:17.160 --> 00:23:18.412
for the State Board of Elections
00:23:18.412 --> 00:23:22.265
to restore 4,500 voter registrations.
00:23:22.265 --> 00:23:24.352
The registrations were recently canceled
00:23:24.352 --> 00:23:27.102
under the controversial Individual Challenge law.
00:23:27.102 --> 00:23:29.011
At least 3000 of the voter registrations
00:23:29.011 --> 00:23:31.702
that were canceled were in Cumberland County.
00:23:31.702 --> 00:23:35.256
- Nobody would fight this hard to take something from us
00:23:35.256 --> 00:23:36.735
that wasn\'t powerful.
00:23:36.735 --> 00:23:37.738
- That\'s right.
00:23:37.738 --> 00:23:38.937
- We must have power.
00:23:38.937 --> 00:23:40.701
We do have power.
00:23:40.701 --> 00:23:43.505
The statistics now say that if you register 30%
00:23:43.505 --> 00:23:47.014
of the unregistered African Americans in the South
00:23:47.014 --> 00:23:50.343
and you add those to Latinos and progressive whites,
00:23:50.343 --> 00:23:52.606
you fundamentally change the South.
00:23:52.606 --> 00:23:55.328
If you change the South, you change the nation.
00:23:55.328 --> 00:23:57.106
- Do you think there will be repercussions
00:23:57.106 --> 00:24:01.021
for the election for the reduced polling sites
00:24:01.021 --> 00:24:02.571
for that first week of early voting--?
00:24:02.571 --> 00:24:03.436
- It already happened.
00:24:03.436 --> 00:24:04.740
It already happened.
00:24:04.740 --> 00:24:07.717
What happened is, remember, the 40 counties
00:24:07.718 --> 00:24:11.367
where you had 158 less early voting sites
00:24:11.367 --> 00:24:15.584
in the first week are your high population black counties.
00:24:15.584 --> 00:24:19.875
They\'re the counties covered by the Voting Rights Act.
00:24:19.875 --> 00:24:23.930
North Carolina is proof that what we told the Roberts Court
00:24:23.930 --> 00:24:27.639
when they ruled five to four to gut the Voting Rights Act,
00:24:27.639 --> 00:24:29.470
we told them you gonna see
00:24:29.470 --> 00:24:33.051
an unleashing of voter suppression.
00:24:33.051 --> 00:24:36.801
North Carolina is the poster child.
00:24:38.902 --> 00:24:42.387
- I grew up with parents who both lost all their families
00:24:42.387 --> 00:24:45.655
in the Holocaust and learned about things that happened
00:24:45.655 --> 00:24:48.991
in Germany once the right to vote was basically eliminated
00:24:48.991 --> 00:24:51.906
and once there was no opportunity
00:24:51.906 --> 00:24:54.906
for people to stop things happening.
00:24:55.894 --> 00:24:58.868
Democratic institutions are really fragile.
00:24:58.868 --> 00:25:00.551
We don\'t realize how fragile they are
00:25:00.551 --> 00:25:02.507
and we take them for granted when we\'re living with them
00:25:02.507 --> 00:25:04.469
and that\'s why doing voting rights work right now
00:25:04.469 --> 00:25:06.811
seems even more important.
00:25:25.588 --> 00:25:28.128
That\'s all we had this morning were those questions
00:25:28.128 --> 00:25:32.875
about the touch screen malfunctioning and purged voters
00:25:32.875 --> 00:25:36.300
and whether they get a regular ballot or a provisional.
00:25:37.150 --> 00:25:40.375
I wish I knew this law as well as I know
00:25:40.665 --> 00:25:43.490
my everyday working law.
00:25:47.184 --> 00:25:48.971
And it\'s important, \'cause I only get
00:25:48.971 --> 00:25:50.782
one chance to get it right.
00:25:50.782 --> 00:25:53.290
- Only three more of those to go.
00:25:53.290 --> 00:25:55.382
- As long as it\'s big enough so that people can see it
00:25:55.382 --> 00:25:56.966
from a distance that\'ll serve its purpose.
00:25:56.966 --> 00:25:58.336
- Right, absolutely.
00:25:58.336 --> 00:26:00.541
- [Claire] Oh look, my inside person.
00:26:00.541 --> 00:26:01.900
- [Steve] Ah, yes!
00:26:01.900 --> 00:26:03.067
Good for you!
00:26:03.067 --> 00:26:04.186
- \"Claire, thanks for the text.
00:26:04.186 --> 00:26:06.755
I plan to be at the poll by six.\"
00:26:06.755 --> 00:26:07.663
- Well, that\'s good.
00:26:07.663 --> 00:26:09.454
That\'s something.
- Yeah, yeah, that is nice.
00:26:09.454 --> 00:26:10.554
- Mine, I can\'t even text
00:26:10.554 --> 00:26:12.514
because she gave me a dentist\'s office
00:26:12.514 --> 00:26:13.871
with an answering machine.
00:26:13.871 --> 00:26:14.721
[laughing]
00:26:16.379 --> 00:26:17.479
- Liz.
00:26:18.548 --> 00:26:20.400
- [Steve] And now we can call Liz.
00:26:20.400 --> 00:26:21.447
- Yup.
- [Steve] Okay?
00:26:21.447 --> 00:26:23.097
Should we text her?
00:26:23.655 --> 00:26:26.222
- [Laverne] We can text her the questions.
00:26:28.202 --> 00:26:29.046
- [Steve] Lemme see.
00:26:29.046 --> 00:26:30.316
[laughing]
00:26:30.316 --> 00:26:32.143
- Well, the N--
- Is it my N?
00:26:32.143 --> 00:26:33.082
- May I see it?
00:26:33.082 --> 00:26:34.041
- The N is running.
00:26:34.041 --> 00:26:36.291
[laughing]
00:26:37.384 --> 00:26:38.718
- [Steve] Problem votin\'?
00:26:38.718 --> 00:26:40.968
[laughing]
00:26:45.221 --> 00:26:46.683
- But it\'s not even an N.
00:26:46.683 --> 00:26:50.194
It\'s like a sort of N with its legs chopped off.
00:26:50.194 --> 00:26:52.707
- [Steve] Okay, she wrote back.
00:26:52.707 --> 00:26:54.356
She\'s fast when you text her.
00:26:54.356 --> 00:26:56.319
- What did she say?
00:26:56.319 --> 00:26:59.025
- She said, \"I don\'t know the answer to the first.
00:26:59.025 --> 00:26:59.858
If that happens,
00:26:59.858 --> 00:27:02.602
please call the boiler room and we\'ll figure it out.\"
00:27:02.602 --> 00:27:05.822
The first is the touch screen malfunctioning
00:27:05.822 --> 00:27:10.154
and at what point is it considered a spoiled ballot.
00:27:10.154 --> 00:27:12.142
So, call the boiler room if that happens.
00:27:12.142 --> 00:27:15.969
\"The second, they may end up having to vote provisionally,
00:27:15.969 --> 00:27:17.796
but by the end of the canvas period
00:27:17.796 --> 00:27:21.366
they will be reinstated and their vote will count fully.\"
00:27:21.366 --> 00:27:23.297
So they may have to vote provisionally.
00:27:23.297 --> 00:27:24.130
- [Claire] Who?
00:27:24.130 --> 00:27:27.207
- The reinstated purged voters.
00:27:27.207 --> 00:27:30.016
\"But again, if you encounter a person this happens to,
00:27:30.016 --> 00:27:30.849
report it.\"
00:27:31.914 --> 00:27:33.589
Then she says, \"Thanks so much.
00:27:33.589 --> 00:27:36.295
I know you guys are gonna do great.\"
00:27:36.295 --> 00:27:37.462
- [Trista] Aww!
00:27:39.263 --> 00:27:41.477
- She says that to everyone, I bet.
00:27:41.477 --> 00:27:43.285
[Laverne laughing]
00:27:45.862 --> 00:27:48.445
[string music]
00:28:18.761 --> 00:28:21.243
- I\'m not quite sure what we\'re gonna find.
00:28:21.243 --> 00:28:25.653
I\'m hoping that we will merely be observing people
00:28:25.653 --> 00:28:29.691
carrying out their democratic right in a peaceful way,
00:28:29.691 --> 00:28:31.300
but if that doesn\'t happen
00:28:31.300 --> 00:28:35.381
I\'m hoping that I will have the means of intervening
00:28:35.381 --> 00:28:39.631
to help someone, even if it\'s just help one person.
00:28:40.493 --> 00:28:41.493
Who\'s first?
00:28:43.172 --> 00:28:44.375
- Who is first?
00:28:44.375 --> 00:28:46.542
- Well, Steve is last, so.
00:28:51.692 --> 00:28:53.518
- Okay, here\'s your sign.
00:28:54.409 --> 00:28:56.230
I think we should all get out and--
00:28:56.230 --> 00:28:58.251
- Yeah, yeah.
- Get her back.
00:28:58.251 --> 00:28:59.834
- Yeah, definitely.
00:29:02.960 --> 00:29:04.293
Are you all set?
00:29:06.535 --> 00:29:08.878
You have your small sign too?
00:29:08.878 --> 00:29:09.711
- Yeah.
- Okay.
00:29:09.711 --> 00:29:11.101
- It\'s in my bag.
00:29:11.101 --> 00:29:13.768
- Got your back.
- Got your back
00:29:15.024 --> 00:29:16.024
- Good luck.
00:29:17.357 --> 00:29:18.903
- [Laverne] You\'re gonna need one of these.
00:29:18.903 --> 00:29:20.020
- Oh, thank you.
00:29:20.020 --> 00:29:20.978
- Yeah.
00:29:20.978 --> 00:29:21.811
It\'s a long day.
00:29:21.811 --> 00:29:22.644
- Yeah.
00:29:22.644 --> 00:29:23.577
Thanks, Mom.
00:29:23.577 --> 00:29:25.444
[Laverne laughing]
00:29:44.318 --> 00:29:46.356
- I think I\'ve got everything.
00:29:47.523 --> 00:29:49.273
- I\'ve got your back.
00:29:50.672 --> 00:29:51.505
Good luck.
00:29:53.138 --> 00:29:54.362
- I\'ll talk to you.
00:29:54.362 --> 00:29:55.195
Okay.
00:30:42.162 --> 00:30:43.374
- This feels good.
00:30:43.374 --> 00:30:46.548
Seeing these people coming here to vote,
00:30:46.548 --> 00:30:48.823
lined up at six o\'clock in the morning
00:30:50.829 --> 00:30:54.079
and everything seems to be working smoothly inside, so...
00:30:55.958 --> 00:30:56.791
...we\'ll see.
00:31:00.863 --> 00:31:02.263
[phone chiming]
00:31:31.807 --> 00:31:33.574
Hi, I\'m Steve Miller.
00:31:33.574 --> 00:31:35.452
- Matthew Davis.
- Hi, nice to meet you.
00:31:35.452 --> 00:31:37.814
I think we\'re kind of trying to do the same thing,
00:31:37.814 --> 00:31:40.024
make sure everything goes smoothly.
00:31:40.024 --> 00:31:43.580
If anybody has problems or questions, I\'m here to help.
00:31:43.580 --> 00:31:46.109
- I\'m with Democracy North Carolina.
00:31:46.109 --> 00:31:47.677
- You doing surveys at all, or...?
00:31:47.677 --> 00:31:48.692
- Yeah.
00:31:48.692 --> 00:31:49.953
I\'m doing surveys.
00:31:49.953 --> 00:31:53.236
I see one thing that we don\'t have the parking.
00:31:55.810 --> 00:31:57.094
[phone chiming]
00:32:02.314 --> 00:32:03.691
- So, I\'m Steve Miller.
00:32:03.691 --> 00:32:05.232
- Steve Miller, are you a federal observer?
00:32:05.232 --> 00:32:06.190
Are you a--
00:32:06.190 --> 00:32:07.811
- Um, I\'m with the--
- Republican or Democrat?
00:32:07.811 --> 00:32:09.375
- Democratic.
00:32:09.375 --> 00:32:10.792
Outside observer.
00:32:12.509 --> 00:32:14.433
Sharon is also gonna be inside.
00:32:14.433 --> 00:32:16.150
I know she\'s on the list.
00:32:16.150 --> 00:32:17.733
- Where are you at?
00:32:21.842 --> 00:32:23.516
- I should be on here.
00:32:24.183 --> 00:32:25.652
- I\'m not seeing you here.
00:32:25.652 --> 00:32:27.687
- I\'ve gotten all kinds of emails from them.
00:32:27.687 --> 00:32:29.093
I\'m on the list.
00:32:29.093 --> 00:32:29.926
- Yeah.
00:32:29.926 --> 00:32:30.759
You\'re not on my list,
00:32:30.759 --> 00:32:34.720
so I gotta ask you again to step past this--
00:32:34.720 --> 00:32:37.995
the curbside right there because you\'re not on my list.
00:32:40.540 --> 00:32:42.596
Get on over by that sidewalk on the other side
00:32:42.596 --> 00:32:45.331
of that sidewalk, on the sidewalk actually.
00:32:45.331 --> 00:32:46.164
- Really?
00:32:46.164 --> 00:32:47.973
I thought it was 50 feet from the entrance no matter where.
00:32:47.973 --> 00:32:48.881
- I\'ll go grab my string.
00:32:48.881 --> 00:32:49.714
How \'bout that?
00:32:49.714 --> 00:32:51.371
- Yeah, that would be great.
00:32:51.455 --> 00:32:54.621
And I\'m gonna write to them and see what\'s going on.
00:32:58.385 --> 00:32:59.561
[sighing]
00:33:00.119 --> 00:33:01.443
- Good morning.
00:33:01.443 --> 00:33:04.122
I\'m doing voter protection work,
00:33:04.122 --> 00:33:07.155
so my job is if people have any problems inside,
00:33:07.155 --> 00:33:09.457
for example if your name is not on the register of voters
00:33:09.457 --> 00:33:12.291
and it should be, if you could talk to me afterwards
00:33:12.291 --> 00:33:14.090
then I can follow up and make sure
00:33:14.090 --> 00:33:16.887
that your vote is counted or any other problems.
00:33:16.887 --> 00:33:17.845
- Okay.
- Okay.
00:33:17.845 --> 00:33:19.723
Thank you.
- Thank you.
00:33:19.723 --> 00:33:22.201
- Everybody\'s friendly here.
00:33:22.201 --> 00:33:24.978
Introduced myself to the judge and she was very busy
00:33:24.978 --> 00:33:26.697
and distracted \'cause she was setting up,
00:33:26.697 --> 00:33:29.086
but she was friendly and nice.
00:33:29.769 --> 00:33:32.111
So far there\'ve been about four this morning--
00:33:32.111 --> 00:33:34.161
well, more than that provisional ballots, about
00:33:34.161 --> 00:33:37.720
six or seven, and at least four of them are people who,
00:33:37.720 --> 00:33:42.304
on the face of it, seem to have been people who were purged.
00:33:42.304 --> 00:33:45.129
You know, they registered, they were adamant
00:33:45.129 --> 00:33:49.687
that they\'d registered, and their names weren\'t there.
00:33:49.687 --> 00:33:52.437
[sirens wailing]
00:33:58.199 --> 00:33:59.162
- You should be alright.
00:33:59.162 --> 00:33:59.995
You\'re good there.
00:33:59.995 --> 00:34:01.260
- Okay, thanks a lot.
00:34:01.260 --> 00:34:02.202
- Alright. Thank you.
00:34:02.202 --> 00:34:03.202
- Thank you.
00:34:04.201 --> 00:34:05.920
This woman was just telling us she got in
00:34:05.920 --> 00:34:06.842
right at the beginning
00:34:06.842 --> 00:34:09.389
and they kept her in there for 45 minutes.
00:34:09.389 --> 00:34:11.618
They didn\'t know how to handle doing a provisional ballot.
00:34:11.618 --> 00:34:13.632
They were having a problem with her address,
00:34:13.632 --> 00:34:16.017
said it was a complete mess.
00:34:16.017 --> 00:34:17.244
Excuse me!
00:34:17.244 --> 00:34:19.361
Everything go okay in there?
00:34:19.361 --> 00:34:22.748
- We turn on our call lines the second the polls open.
00:34:22.748 --> 00:34:24.402
We\'ll start out slow.
00:34:24.402 --> 00:34:27.208
That\'s what normally happens, but that was not the case.
00:34:27.208 --> 00:34:29.772
All the lines lit up within five minutes
00:34:29.772 --> 00:34:32.240
and stayed fairly heavy.
00:34:32.240 --> 00:34:33.634
- You can call me.
00:34:33.634 --> 00:34:36.710
- They were twice the number that we had received
00:34:36.710 --> 00:34:39.182
in the previous presidential election.
00:34:39.182 --> 00:34:40.184
- We\'re just trying to help.
00:34:40.184 --> 00:34:42.723
You know, if there are problems, we can be a resource.
00:34:42.723 --> 00:34:45.100
- Yeah, I can\'t use you guys.
00:34:45.100 --> 00:34:45.942
Y\'all are just here to--
00:34:45.942 --> 00:34:48.006
- Oh no, yeah, we\'re here if any of the voters wanna--
00:34:48.006 --> 00:34:50.132
- As long as you stay outside of the 50-foot zone--
00:34:50.132 --> 00:34:50.998
- Right.
- You\'re good to go.
00:34:50.998 --> 00:34:52.975
- If I need to use the bathroom, I can just run in?
00:34:52.975 --> 00:34:54.123
I\'m not gonna be talking to anybody or--
00:34:54.123 --> 00:34:54.956
- No.
00:34:54.956 --> 00:34:56.387
Don\'t go in my polling place.
00:34:56.387 --> 00:34:58.270
This door may be open except by the fire department.
00:34:58.270 --> 00:34:59.506
Otherwise, no.
00:34:59.506 --> 00:35:01.903
- I\'ve been doing this all week with early voting.
00:35:01.903 --> 00:35:03.546
The judges can be a little flexible,
00:35:03.546 --> 00:35:05.227
I mean, to go to the bathroom.
00:35:05.227 --> 00:35:06.060
- No, I can\'t do it today.
00:35:06.060 --> 00:35:06.893
- Your last name?
00:35:06.893 --> 00:35:08.392
- Dow, D-O-W.
00:35:08.392 --> 00:35:10.309
- You\'re the first one.
00:35:11.186 --> 00:35:13.108
- And you the...?
00:35:13.108 --> 00:35:14.692
- Chief Judge.
- Chief Judge.
00:35:14.692 --> 00:35:15.775
- [Mark] Yep.
00:35:17.293 --> 00:35:18.126
- Okay.
00:35:23.602 --> 00:35:25.166
- Excuse me, ma\'am, did everything go okay?
00:35:25.166 --> 00:35:26.295
Were you able to vote in there?
00:35:26.295 --> 00:35:27.128
Was there a problem?
00:35:27.128 --> 00:35:30.404
- No, they sent me from the one on Cliffdale over here,
00:35:30.404 --> 00:35:31.623
now I got to go over there.
00:35:31.623 --> 00:35:32.517
I don\'t know where I\'m going.
00:35:32.517 --> 00:35:33.350
- Have you--
00:35:33.350 --> 00:35:34.183
- But I\'ve got to get back to work.
00:35:34.183 --> 00:35:35.016
[laughing]
00:35:35.016 --> 00:35:35.849
- Oh, would you mind,
00:35:35.849 --> 00:35:38.509
\'cause I\'m a voter protection volunteer
00:35:38.509 --> 00:35:39.846
and we\'re just following up with people
00:35:39.846 --> 00:35:41.957
who are having problems voting.
00:35:42.390 --> 00:35:44.789
Are you gonna be able to come back and vote later at all?
00:35:44.789 --> 00:35:47.109
- Well, I\'m getting ready to go over there,
00:35:47.109 --> 00:35:49.867
and if they tell me I\'m in the wrong district again
00:35:49.867 --> 00:35:51.463
then I just quit.
00:35:51.463 --> 00:35:52.315
- Oh, don\'t quit.
00:35:52.315 --> 00:35:53.207
[laughing]
00:35:53.207 --> 00:35:54.197
- I gotta get back to work.
00:35:54.197 --> 00:35:55.566
I mean, I tried.
00:35:55.566 --> 00:35:57.017
This is the second time.
00:35:57.017 --> 00:35:59.703
The last time the line was so long, I didn\'t have time.
00:35:59.703 --> 00:36:00.536
- Okay.
00:36:00.536 --> 00:36:03.737
We\'ve got some people who you can phone
00:36:03.737 --> 00:36:06.509
who can check up on your district and make sure
00:36:06.509 --> 00:36:11.128
that you get some assistance if you\'ve been to two already.
00:36:11.128 --> 00:36:15.070
There\'s a voter protection-- those two numbers,
00:36:15.070 --> 00:36:16.750
you can try calling before you go and see if there\'s
00:36:16.750 --> 00:36:20.803
someone there you can make sure they can help you
00:36:20.803 --> 00:36:22.795
making sure you get to the right place.
00:36:22.795 --> 00:36:24.030
- Well, I appreciate it.
00:36:24.030 --> 00:36:25.258
- [Claire] Please do vote.
00:36:25.258 --> 00:36:26.300
[laughing]
- I\'m tryin\'.
00:36:26.300 --> 00:36:27.419
- I know you are.
- I\'m tryin\'.
00:36:27.419 --> 00:36:28.752
- [Claire] Okay.
00:36:30.417 --> 00:36:34.174
- We have struggled long and mightily to win
00:36:34.174 --> 00:36:37.986
the right to vote and we will continue to struggle,
00:36:37.986 --> 00:36:41.961
because when you deny a person the right to vote
00:36:41.961 --> 00:36:45.255
then you take away every other constitutional right
00:36:45.255 --> 00:36:47.005
that they might have.
00:36:50.552 --> 00:36:52.807
- I called and they send me here.
00:36:52.807 --> 00:36:55.370
Now these people here tell me I cannot vote here.
00:36:55.370 --> 00:36:56.271
\"It\'s not here.
00:36:56.271 --> 00:36:57.757
Go to another place.\"
00:36:57.757 --> 00:36:58.590
- Really?
00:36:58.590 --> 00:36:59.423
And what is your address?
00:36:59.423 --> 00:37:00.256
What is your address?
00:37:00.256 --> 00:37:01.699
- [Woman] My address is Nikita Drive.
00:37:01.699 --> 00:37:02.532
- Okay.
00:37:02.532 --> 00:37:03.814
Lemme, I can make a phone call.
00:37:03.814 --> 00:37:05.819
- Please do that because they don\'t want me to vote
00:37:05.819 --> 00:37:07.608
and I\'m gonna find my place
00:37:07.608 --> 00:37:09.711
\'cause I want Hillary no matter what.
00:37:09.711 --> 00:37:10.544
- Right.
00:37:10.544 --> 00:37:11.377
So, you\'re not gonna give up.
00:37:11.377 --> 00:37:12.278
- I\'m not gonna give up.
00:37:12.278 --> 00:37:13.111
- They\'re not gonna stop you.
00:37:13.111 --> 00:37:14.187
- Three places they say no?
00:37:14.187 --> 00:37:16.725
I\'m gonna keep going until I find her.
00:37:16.725 --> 00:37:18.043
- [Steve] Right, okay.
00:37:18.043 --> 00:37:19.535
I\'m supporting you on that and I\'m here to help.
00:37:19.535 --> 00:37:20.936
- This is not fair.
00:37:20.936 --> 00:37:22.732
- Well, it\'s not over yet.
00:37:22.732 --> 00:37:23.818
- It\'s not over yet.
00:37:23.818 --> 00:37:24.717
I will find my place.
00:37:24.717 --> 00:37:25.550
- [Steve] It\'s not over yet, yup.
00:37:25.550 --> 00:37:26.688
You\'re gonna get in there.
00:37:26.688 --> 00:37:28.557
- [Matthew] We\'re gonna take care of you.
00:37:28.557 --> 00:37:31.515
- I just can\'t believe this is very unprofessional.
00:37:31.515 --> 00:37:34.348
I changed it five years ago and they say,
00:37:34.348 --> 00:37:36.644
\"No. Go here, go here, go here.\"
00:37:36.644 --> 00:37:37.739
Three places.
00:37:37.739 --> 00:37:39.613
I can\'t believe this.
00:37:39.613 --> 00:37:42.225
- She\'s been living at the same address for five years.
00:37:42.225 --> 00:37:44.035
- Ten people left from the other place with me
00:37:44.035 --> 00:37:45.619
because they got the wrong places.
00:37:45.619 --> 00:37:47.498
- You\'ve been living at the same address for five years?
00:37:47.498 --> 00:37:48.369
You said, right?
- Yes, sir.
00:37:48.369 --> 00:37:51.096
- Yes, she\'s been at the same address for five years.
00:37:51.096 --> 00:37:53.601
- I even change it in here five years ago too.
00:37:53.601 --> 00:37:55.643
- Okay, will you do this survey right quick?
00:37:55.643 --> 00:37:57.220
- Yes.
00:37:57.220 --> 00:37:59.285
- I\'m 68 years-old.
00:37:59.285 --> 00:38:01.485
Been married for 46 years.
00:38:01.485 --> 00:38:05.118
I got three adult kids, eight grandkids.
00:38:05.939 --> 00:38:08.944
I was stationed here at Fort Bragg
00:38:08.944 --> 00:38:12.100
in the 82nd Airborne Division for 13 years
00:38:12.100 --> 00:38:14.787
after I came back from Vietnam.
00:38:14.787 --> 00:38:16.249
Voting
00:38:16.249 --> 00:38:17.349
is the key...
00:38:18.793 --> 00:38:20.188
...to everything.
00:38:20.705 --> 00:38:24.880
Dividing the money, healthcare, education.
00:38:26.463 --> 00:38:29.622
You name it, they had a vote for it.
00:38:29.622 --> 00:38:32.205
So, I\'m gonna go down fightin\'.
00:38:34.831 --> 00:38:35.700
- Hey, how you doin\'?
00:38:35.700 --> 00:38:37.751
Lemme talk to you for a second.
00:38:37.751 --> 00:38:38.684
- [Laverne] Okay.
00:38:38.684 --> 00:38:40.878
- They said that they could not find me
00:38:40.878 --> 00:38:45.734
because of the DMV did not, I guess, you know, process.
00:38:45.734 --> 00:38:46.659
I don\'t know.
00:38:46.659 --> 00:38:47.992
Some kind of mishap.
00:38:47.992 --> 00:38:49.977
- There have been some issues with people
00:38:49.977 --> 00:38:51.902
who did registration at the DMV.
00:38:51.902 --> 00:38:53.060
- With the DMV.
00:38:53.060 --> 00:38:54.175
So, I did this.
00:38:54.175 --> 00:38:55.008
- Okay.
00:38:55.008 --> 00:38:56.432
- And I guess this is some type of,
00:38:56.432 --> 00:38:57.969
well, you know, better than I do.
00:38:57.969 --> 00:38:58.802
- Yes.
00:39:00.262 --> 00:39:04.466
- So, after the election is over, so my vote counts
00:39:04.466 --> 00:39:05.690
after the election.
- No--
00:39:05.690 --> 00:39:07.765
- What\'s the address that you have?
00:39:12.576 --> 00:39:13.934
6355.
00:39:13.934 --> 00:39:15.372
- I moved five years ago.
00:39:15.372 --> 00:39:17.753
- She moved from that address five years ago.
00:39:17.753 --> 00:39:19.702
- And I changed it and it\'s on my license.
00:39:19.702 --> 00:39:20.888
- And she changed it.
00:39:20.888 --> 00:39:22.378
And she has a driver\'s license
00:39:22.378 --> 00:39:24.282
that has the current address on it.
00:39:24.282 --> 00:39:28.725
- For whatever reason, the DMV only loses, you know,
00:39:28.725 --> 00:39:31.730
just being honest, black people,
00:39:31.730 --> 00:39:32.743
you know, that\'s how I\'m feelin\'.
00:39:32.743 --> 00:39:34.044
I mean that\'s what I\'m noticin\'.
00:39:34.044 --> 00:39:36.863
I\'m the only-- me and two other black guys
00:39:36.863 --> 00:39:41.109
are the only guys that the DMV forgot to process.
00:39:41.109 --> 00:39:43.473
To me that doesn\'t make any logical--
00:39:43.473 --> 00:39:44.552
- That makes no sense.
00:39:44.552 --> 00:39:45.873
- No sense.
- No sense.
00:39:45.873 --> 00:39:47.938
- But everybody else is, \"Oh, we can find you.
00:39:47.938 --> 00:39:51.262
We got you, here we go.\" But I gotta, again,
00:39:51.262 --> 00:39:55.970
does this mean that after the vote is over, my vote counts?
00:39:55.970 --> 00:39:59.177
What that\'s like a race-- the football game is over
00:39:59.177 --> 00:40:00.619
and now I can play.
00:40:00.619 --> 00:40:03.501
- The only thing you can do is vote provisionally today.
00:40:03.501 --> 00:40:05.456
- I think that\'s unfair.
00:40:05.456 --> 00:40:06.456
Very unfair.
00:40:09.004 --> 00:40:10.652
- [Steve] Yeah, that\'s what\'s weird.
00:40:10.652 --> 00:40:13.294
The computer shows you voted in the primary.
00:40:13.294 --> 00:40:14.127
- Exactly.
00:40:14.127 --> 00:40:16.629
- Yeah, she said that she had voted before.
00:40:16.629 --> 00:40:19.270
So, what could\'ve happened between the primary vote
00:40:19.270 --> 00:40:21.740
and this that would change her address on the records?
00:40:21.740 --> 00:40:23.343
- [Man on phone] I don\'t know what the answer to that is.
00:40:23.343 --> 00:40:25.546
- Alright, but you can\'t see any scenario
00:40:25.546 --> 00:40:28.765
that would allow her to vote with a regular ballot today?
00:40:29.373 --> 00:40:31.682
- What we\'re trying to do is make sure
00:40:31.682 --> 00:40:34.039
that all of the provisional ballots--
00:40:34.039 --> 00:40:34.872
- Right.
00:40:34.872 --> 00:40:36.466
- Especially the ones that came through the DMV,
00:40:36.466 --> 00:40:39.431
because that\'s a known problem--
00:40:39.431 --> 00:40:40.978
- Right, I know, I understand that, yeah.
00:40:40.978 --> 00:40:43.702
- [laughing] That something can be done with those.
00:40:43.702 --> 00:40:44.535
- I got ya.
00:40:44.535 --> 00:40:45.368
I got ya.
00:40:45.368 --> 00:40:46.201
I will fill that out.
00:40:46.201 --> 00:40:47.067
- Here\'s my clipboard.
00:40:47.067 --> 00:40:47.902
My pen.
00:40:47.902 --> 00:40:48.735
Go for it.
00:40:48.735 --> 00:40:49.568
- Yes, ma\'am.
00:40:49.568 --> 00:40:50.401
I appreciate you.
00:40:50.401 --> 00:40:53.747
- And make sure you sign at the bottom.
00:40:53.747 --> 00:40:55.207
I\'m so glad that you stopped by.
00:40:55.207 --> 00:40:57.082
- Oh yeah, oh yeah.
00:40:57.082 --> 00:40:59.140
- We\'re gonna do the follow-up on this.
00:40:59.140 --> 00:41:00.473
- [Voter] Mmm hmm.
00:41:11.698 --> 00:41:13.577
- I\'m not ignoring you, but I\'m getting texts.
00:41:13.577 --> 00:41:14.914
- Oh do what you gotta do, do what you gotta do.
00:41:14.914 --> 00:41:19.311
- So I\'m wondering if it\'s other issues, that\'s all.
00:41:19.311 --> 00:41:20.728
But I\'m with you.
00:41:25.976 --> 00:41:29.118
Oh, they\'re telling me another provisional ballot.
00:41:30.210 --> 00:41:32.714
- I tell you, she\'s not giving up.
00:41:32.714 --> 00:41:34.381
She\'s not giving up.
00:41:36.849 --> 00:41:39.053
- Even if it takes me up to 10:00 p.m. tonight,
00:41:39.053 --> 00:41:40.578
I will keep looking for my vote.
00:41:40.578 --> 00:41:41.556
- Yeah?
00:41:41.556 --> 00:41:43.080
Okay, I think it\'s worth it.
00:41:43.080 --> 00:41:44.309
If in the end she goes there
00:41:44.309 --> 00:41:46.441
and they make her do the provisional,
00:41:46.441 --> 00:41:49.330
at least there\'s a chance if she goes to the right precinct
00:41:49.330 --> 00:41:51.971
she\'s gonna get to vote regular when she shows her the ID
00:41:51.971 --> 00:41:55.299
and explains the story, she can attest that it\'s her
00:41:55.299 --> 00:41:59.651
and that you could possibly vote with the regular ballot.
00:41:59.651 --> 00:42:00.651
So, it\'s worth the effort.
00:42:00.651 --> 00:42:01.484
Make the trip,
00:42:01.484 --> 00:42:04.141
it\'s only 10 minutes by car according to the map.
00:42:04.141 --> 00:42:04.974
- [Voter] Okay.
00:42:04.974 --> 00:42:09.388
- Go in, explain the story to them, show them your ID,
00:42:09.388 --> 00:42:11.010
tell them you voted in the primary
00:42:11.010 --> 00:42:13.324
and tell \'em you want to vote with a regular ballot.
00:42:13.324 --> 00:42:14.764
Okay?
- I will.
00:42:14.764 --> 00:42:16.447
- And then if you have a problem, you can call me.
00:42:16.447 --> 00:42:17.453
I can talk to them too
00:42:17.453 --> 00:42:18.737
and we can see if we can do something.
00:42:18.737 --> 00:42:20.084
- I will do that.
00:42:20.084 --> 00:42:21.250
- Okay?
- Thank you.
00:42:21.250 --> 00:42:23.950
- Alright, good luck.
- Have a blessed day.
00:42:26.603 --> 00:42:29.623
- Yeah, this was crazy.
- This is outrageous.
00:42:29.623 --> 00:42:30.865
She\'s a citizen.
00:42:30.865 --> 00:42:31.833
- Right.
- Right?
00:42:31.833 --> 00:42:33.017
Moved five years ago.
00:42:33.017 --> 00:42:34.641
Address not in the system.
00:42:34.641 --> 00:42:35.474
Weird.
00:42:35.474 --> 00:42:36.307
- I know that, and you know what?
00:42:36.307 --> 00:42:38.729
Most people wouldn\'t be as persistent as she is.
00:42:38.729 --> 00:42:40.658
They would\'ve given up by now.
00:42:40.658 --> 00:42:41.774
She\'s not giving up.
00:42:41.774 --> 00:42:44.065
- But she voted in the primary.
00:42:45.403 --> 00:42:48.128
- [Steve] She did everything she\'s supposed to do.
00:42:52.805 --> 00:42:55.972
[acoustic guitar music]
00:42:59.952 --> 00:43:01.952
- Way back in 2004
00:43:02.521 --> 00:43:07.521
I took it upon myself to drive people to the polls,
00:43:07.565 --> 00:43:10.614
so I drove a woman
00:43:11.348 --> 00:43:14.573
who had a very hard time walking.
00:43:15.367 --> 00:43:19.984
And a janitor heard me talking
00:43:20.892 --> 00:43:22.642
to the people,
00:43:23.100 --> 00:43:27.841
you know, right outside the poll, and he found
00:43:28.796 --> 00:43:31.997
a industrial pushcart
00:43:32.613 --> 00:43:37.565
and pushed it out the back door and around to the street
00:43:37.565 --> 00:43:42.057
with a chair on it so that this woman could sit
00:43:42.057 --> 00:43:43.448
in this chair.
00:43:43.940 --> 00:43:47.031
And he pushed her back through the schoolyard
00:43:47.046 --> 00:43:51.946
and up and through the utility, um,
00:43:52.855 --> 00:43:53.855
elevator
00:43:54.299 --> 00:43:58.524
just so she could get to the place where she could vote.
00:43:59.819 --> 00:44:00.986
And I thought,
00:44:02.083 --> 00:44:06.975
if he could do that on a day when that\'s not his job,
00:44:07.587 --> 00:44:09.088
I could take some time off
00:44:09.088 --> 00:44:11.921
at every election to do something.
00:44:13.315 --> 00:44:14.850
- [Woman] Excuse me, ma\'am.
00:44:14.850 --> 00:44:15.808
Ma\'am?
- Yes?
00:44:15.808 --> 00:44:19.146
- You have someone who wanna see you about a location.
00:44:19.146 --> 00:44:19.987
- Okay.
00:44:19.987 --> 00:44:24.045
- They spoke-- not sure if they supposed...
00:44:24.045 --> 00:44:26.846
- I know there are special provisions with the military
00:44:26.846 --> 00:44:29.180
once they work out where you are
00:44:29.180 --> 00:44:32.214
and where you should be voting, your vote can be counted.
00:44:32.972 --> 00:44:34.322
- Oh, that\'s great news.
00:44:34.322 --> 00:44:37.757
So you got a regular ballot, and you voted?
00:44:37.757 --> 00:44:40.884
I\'m so glad that\'s gotten fixed.
00:44:40.884 --> 00:44:41.717
Okay.
00:44:41.717 --> 00:44:42.550
It was a real pleasure
00:44:42.550 --> 00:44:44.058
and I\'m just happy everything worked out,
00:44:44.058 --> 00:44:45.387
so you voted a regular ballot
00:44:45.387 --> 00:44:47.674
and your vote\'s gonna be counted tonight.
00:44:48.599 --> 00:44:49.500
That\'s great.
00:44:49.500 --> 00:44:52.064
Alright, thank you for voting and good luck.
00:44:52.064 --> 00:44:53.843
Yeah, have a good day.
00:44:53.843 --> 00:44:54.676
Bye.
00:44:57.535 --> 00:44:59.546
They let her vote with a regular ballot.
00:44:59.546 --> 00:45:00.379
- Huh?
00:45:00.379 --> 00:45:01.911
- They let her vote with a regular ballot
00:45:01.911 --> 00:45:02.744
at the other precinct.
00:45:02.744 --> 00:45:03.577
- At the other place?
00:45:03.577 --> 00:45:04.538
- Yep.
00:45:04.538 --> 00:45:05.371
They let her go ahead and do it.
00:45:05.371 --> 00:45:06.492
- See?
00:45:06.492 --> 00:45:08.300
- Excuse me, did everything go okay in there?
00:45:08.300 --> 00:45:09.156
- Perfect, thank you.
00:45:09.156 --> 00:45:10.094
- Everything was perfect?
00:45:10.094 --> 00:45:10.927
Great.
00:45:10.927 --> 00:45:12.027
Do you mind if I take a picture of you?
00:45:12.027 --> 00:45:12.930
I\'ve been interested.
00:45:12.930 --> 00:45:14.120
I wanna take pictures of people
00:45:14.120 --> 00:45:15.088
who bring their kids to vote.
00:45:15.088 --> 00:45:16.087
- Sure.
00:45:16.087 --> 00:45:17.837
- I think it\'s great.
00:45:23.367 --> 00:45:25.342
Did I see you go in with some other kids too, or...?
00:45:25.342 --> 00:45:26.672
- Yeah, my daughter and wife\'s here.
00:45:26.672 --> 00:45:28.169
- You wanna wait and do a family portrait
00:45:28.169 --> 00:45:30.002
and have all the kids?
00:45:31.018 --> 00:45:33.406
I really like when people bring their kids to vote
00:45:33.406 --> 00:45:36.714
\'cause my parents used to take me when I was their age.
00:45:38.900 --> 00:45:40.305
I\'ve been taking pictures of people
00:45:40.305 --> 00:45:42.430
who bring their children in to vote.
00:45:42.430 --> 00:45:45.463
This is how we keep voting going into the future, I think.
00:45:45.463 --> 00:45:47.630
- Wonderful.
- The next generation.
00:46:03.734 --> 00:46:04.567
- So, let\'s see.
00:46:04.567 --> 00:46:06.484
It\'s almost 4:30.
00:46:08.304 --> 00:46:11.229
We have a little more than three hours to go
00:46:11.229 --> 00:46:14.877
so we\'ll see what it is when everybody comes from work.
00:46:14.877 --> 00:46:17.310
Ma\'am, ma\'am, it\'s this door.
00:46:17.310 --> 00:46:21.557
And if you have any trouble voting, please come and see me.
00:46:21.557 --> 00:46:24.468
Here\'s what I\'d like to ask you to do, because--
00:46:24.468 --> 00:46:25.396
[sighing]
00:46:25.396 --> 00:46:28.017
I know this is so frustrating.
00:46:28.500 --> 00:46:31.721
Did you just have to vote by a provisional ballot?
00:46:32.579 --> 00:46:37.520
Your name in here and here, city of Fayetteville,
00:46:37.520 --> 00:46:40.873
Cumberland County, and what they said to you.
00:46:41.656 --> 00:46:43.910
- One woman in a car called me over.
00:46:43.910 --> 00:46:47.600
She saw the sign and she said, \"I can\'t fill out the ballot.
00:46:47.600 --> 00:46:49.162
I\'m gonna need help.\"
00:46:49.162 --> 00:46:53.584
And at that point, Mr. Crabby saw me talking to this woman
00:46:53.584 --> 00:46:55.684
in the car, like, over there,
00:46:55.684 --> 00:46:58.783
and he came running out and he said, \"You gotta back off,
00:46:58.783 --> 00:47:02.002
you\'re not allowed to talk to my voters.\"
00:47:02.002 --> 00:47:04.652
So I said to him, \"She wants to vote,
00:47:04.652 --> 00:47:06.321
but she needs help with writing,
00:47:06.321 --> 00:47:08.103
so you need to get someone to help her
00:47:08.103 --> 00:47:10.737
when she gets her car down to the front of the line.\"
00:47:10.737 --> 00:47:12.853
He said, \"No, she needs a family member.\"
00:47:12.853 --> 00:47:16.577
I had the book here and I said, \"I have the law right here.\"
00:47:16.577 --> 00:47:18.517
So I showed him and we read it together.
00:47:18.517 --> 00:47:20.862
As he read it, he said, \"Oh, okay.\"
00:47:20.862 --> 00:47:22.025
He didn\'t know it.
00:47:22.025 --> 00:47:25.992
So, I said, \"Look, I\'m just trying to help the voters vote.
00:47:25.992 --> 00:47:27.470
I\'m not here to challenge you.
00:47:27.470 --> 00:47:29.337
I\'m not threatening, but I have the law here
00:47:29.337 --> 00:47:30.414
and I can help.\"
00:47:30.414 --> 00:47:33.796
And he kind of-- I saw him kind of visibly relax.
00:47:33.796 --> 00:47:34.955
And then when she got to the bottom,
00:47:34.955 --> 00:47:36.803
the woman who was doing the curbside
00:47:36.803 --> 00:47:38.857
had already been instructed by him that she was gonna
00:47:38.857 --> 00:47:40.602
help her fill the ballot out
00:47:40.602 --> 00:47:44.435
so that she could vote and I thought, victory!
00:47:52.556 --> 00:47:53.820
- [Mark] You wanted to know the count?
00:47:53.820 --> 00:47:54.767
- [Steve] Oh yeah, that would be great.
00:47:54.767 --> 00:47:55.770
- [Mark] 646.
00:47:55.770 --> 00:47:56.686
- [Steve] 646, great.
00:47:56.686 --> 00:47:57.519
- Yep.
00:47:57.519 --> 00:47:58.659
- By the way, I still have all that candy.
00:47:58.659 --> 00:48:00.750
I don\'t know if anybody wants any.
00:48:00.750 --> 00:48:01.583
- That\'s alright.
00:48:01.583 --> 00:48:02.702
Don\'t let them throw the trash out.
00:48:02.702 --> 00:48:04.327
- [Steve] Okay, thanks.
00:48:06.360 --> 00:48:07.193
646.
00:48:11.042 --> 00:48:12.883
[siren blaring]
00:48:14.475 --> 00:48:15.950
[phone chiming]
00:48:41.707 --> 00:48:42.948
[phone chiming]
00:48:43.623 --> 00:48:46.623
[Phone ringing]
00:48:49.192 --> 00:48:50.395
- [Phil] Hey, Laverne.
00:48:50.395 --> 00:48:53.024
- Hey, Phil, I was able to get the car
00:48:53.024 --> 00:48:56.606
to pick me up and so I\'ve just started off.
00:48:56.606 --> 00:48:59.439
I should continue on to Cliffdale?
00:49:00.631 --> 00:49:02.078
- [Phil] Yeah, you can go ahead on to Cliffdale.
00:49:02.078 --> 00:49:04.455
There may be at least one other person outside now,
00:49:04.455 --> 00:49:06.487
but frankly, if the issues are really bad,
00:49:06.487 --> 00:49:08.787
we\'re gonna need multiple people there.
00:49:08.787 --> 00:49:09.620
- Hey Sean.
00:49:09.620 --> 00:49:10.976
We\'ve been here at the Cliffdale Recreation Center
00:49:10.976 --> 00:49:12.772
for the last four hours and I tell you,
00:49:12.772 --> 00:49:15.160
voter turnout here has been consistent.
00:49:15.160 --> 00:49:17.659
Right now, you see about 50 people.
00:49:17.659 --> 00:49:18.492
- [Laverne] Hi there.
00:49:18.492 --> 00:49:20.671
Can I offer you some candy? Because I have a lot.
00:49:20.671 --> 00:49:21.689
[laughing]
00:49:21.689 --> 00:49:22.548
- Yes, ma\'am.
00:49:22.548 --> 00:49:23.930
- [Laverne] There are various, you know,
00:49:23.930 --> 00:49:26.247
you might have to dig around and see what you find.
00:49:26.247 --> 00:49:27.080
- I\'ll just take a piece.
00:49:27.080 --> 00:49:28.490
I appreciate that.
00:49:29.115 --> 00:49:30.817
- So, I\'m out here just to make sure
00:49:30.817 --> 00:49:32.735
that everybody gets their vote in.
00:49:32.735 --> 00:49:36.534
I wanna make sure that I can do as much as I can
00:49:36.534 --> 00:49:38.961
to make sure that your vote goes in tonight.
00:49:38.961 --> 00:49:39.878
- Okay.
- Okay?
00:49:39.878 --> 00:49:40.711
- I appreciate it.
00:49:40.711 --> 00:49:42.629
- Why wouldn\'t I be able to vote?
00:49:42.629 --> 00:49:44.922
- Well, there are some things that have been happening.
00:49:44.922 --> 00:49:47.210
People are-- have been ending up--
00:49:47.210 --> 00:49:49.377
Voting is an act of faith.
00:49:50.602 --> 00:49:53.970
The person that\'s casting that vote
00:49:53.970 --> 00:49:56.822
is believing in the system.
00:49:56.822 --> 00:49:58.260
It\'s that belief.
00:49:58.260 --> 00:50:02.577
I mean, if everyone has that belief,
00:50:02.577 --> 00:50:04.852
then you can get somewhere.
00:50:05.610 --> 00:50:08.626
If you are throwing obstacles
00:50:08.626 --> 00:50:11.432
in the way of being able to vote,
00:50:11.432 --> 00:50:14.591
if everyone has no belief,
00:50:15.236 --> 00:50:18.019
then you\'ll lose those votes.
00:50:18.964 --> 00:50:21.631
And that\'s not really democracy.
00:50:23.153 --> 00:50:24.087
Hi, ma\'am, what\'s up?
00:50:24.087 --> 00:50:24.924
- Hi.
00:50:25.224 --> 00:50:27.012
I had to have my ID card even though they said
00:50:27.012 --> 00:50:28.488
you don\'t have to have your ID card
00:50:28.488 --> 00:50:29.972
and I didn\'t have it with me.
00:50:29.972 --> 00:50:30.805
- Really?
00:50:30.805 --> 00:50:32.199
They told you that you needed your ID card?
00:50:32.199 --> 00:50:34.187
- Yeah, I had to come back.
00:50:34.187 --> 00:50:35.273
This is my second time being here.
00:50:35.273 --> 00:50:37.856
I waited in line for 30 minutes earlier
00:50:37.856 --> 00:50:38.847
and then they were, like,
00:50:38.847 --> 00:50:41.098
I got up there and she said it says it\'s invalid
00:50:41.098 --> 00:50:42.816
but yet I\'m the only one in my household
00:50:42.816 --> 00:50:45.866
out of four of us that got anything about voting.
00:50:45.866 --> 00:50:48.723
- I thought the provisional was supposed to be in place
00:50:48.723 --> 00:50:53.279
and at the discretion of the Board of Elections.
00:50:53.279 --> 00:50:54.132
- Yes.
00:50:54.132 --> 00:50:56.323
- That\'s not being exercised here at Cliffdale,
00:50:56.323 --> 00:50:58.303
there are a lot of people being turned away.
00:50:58.303 --> 00:51:00.452
- [Laverne] And saying that they can\'t vote provisionally?
00:51:00.452 --> 00:51:01.285
- Yes Ma\'am.
00:51:01.285 --> 00:51:02.118
- Okay.
00:51:08.515 --> 00:51:10.275
I\'m feeling a little sad
00:51:10.275 --> 00:51:13.273
because there have been some issues today.
00:51:13.273 --> 00:51:16.602
I wish that right now I was having
00:51:16.602 --> 00:51:18.432
more people ask me questions
00:51:18.432 --> 00:51:23.432
because there are questions that needed to be answered.
00:51:23.479 --> 00:51:25.429
But, unfortunately,
00:51:25.429 --> 00:51:29.158
people are acquiescing to what\'s going on
00:51:29.158 --> 00:51:32.171
because they feel there is nothing that can be done
00:51:32.171 --> 00:51:33.421
and going home.
00:52:19.553 --> 00:52:22.063
- Glad to see you in one piece.
00:52:22.788 --> 00:52:23.846
- You too.
00:52:23.846 --> 00:52:25.751
- I had an inside guy and he kept on telling me
00:52:25.751 --> 00:52:28.825
about provisional votes and then when he left,
00:52:28.825 --> 00:52:30.297
it was very hard, you know,
00:52:30.297 --> 00:52:33.547
I talked to people before they went in when I could
00:52:33.547 --> 00:52:35.020
and then talked to them when they came out,
00:52:35.020 --> 00:52:38.441
but, like, people were saying, \"It was fine, it was fine,\"
00:52:38.441 --> 00:52:40.305
and then you dig a little deep
00:52:40.305 --> 00:52:43.771
and you\'d found they\'d done a provisional ballot.
00:52:45.481 --> 00:52:49.971
But I think the people in this office were pretty...
00:52:50.271 --> 00:52:51.104
- Pretty good?
00:52:51.104 --> 00:52:52.066
- Pretty good, yeah.
00:52:52.066 --> 00:52:53.070
- Oh well, that\'s good.
00:52:53.070 --> 00:52:57.968
I mean, that is much, much, much more than half the battle.
00:52:57.968 --> 00:52:58.872
- Yeah.
00:52:58.872 --> 00:52:59.705
Yeah.
00:53:07.415 --> 00:53:12.265
- So, has any place said anything about anything?
00:53:15.417 --> 00:53:16.713
Results-wise?
00:53:16.713 --> 00:53:17.839
- I did see something.
00:53:17.839 --> 00:53:19.506
Vermont for Hillary.
00:53:20.346 --> 00:53:22.929
Indiana and Kentucky for Trump.
00:53:26.112 --> 00:53:28.604
- Steve always makes me laugh.
00:53:28.604 --> 00:53:31.254
I mean, he has time to take pictures.
00:53:31.254 --> 00:53:35.372
[laughs] He\'s just, he\'s so busy, that Steve.
00:53:35.372 --> 00:53:37.372
- He has such resources.
00:53:38.230 --> 00:53:39.063
- I know.
00:53:39.063 --> 00:53:40.796
He\'s so busy.
00:53:43.452 --> 00:53:44.986
[phone chiming]
00:53:51.536 --> 00:53:53.323
- So you\'re still looking for the provisional ballot
00:53:53.323 --> 00:53:54.567
that should be in here?
00:53:54.567 --> 00:53:55.842
- [Mark] Yeah, should be in here.
00:53:59.680 --> 00:54:00.513
- So what happened?
00:54:00.513 --> 00:54:02.195
The person just got up and walked over to the machine
00:54:02.195 --> 00:54:03.538
and put it in or...?
00:54:03.538 --> 00:54:04.378
- [Mark] Yeah, yeah.
00:54:04.378 --> 00:54:06.927
And the girl that was watching the machine--
00:54:06.927 --> 00:54:07.815
- [Woman] Didn\'t catch it.
00:54:07.815 --> 00:54:10.185
- [Steve] Didn\'t catch it \'til it was too late.
00:54:10.185 --> 00:54:11.579
- [Mark] There\'s nothing we can do about that
00:54:11.579 --> 00:54:13.629
besides what we\'re doing now.
00:54:17.047 --> 00:54:19.380
- All because of one person.
00:54:21.205 --> 00:54:22.038
- One job.
00:54:24.835 --> 00:54:26.202
- I wish I could help.
00:54:26.202 --> 00:54:27.335
- Yeah.
00:54:27.335 --> 00:54:30.378
- It would go faster with two more people, you know?
00:54:31.045 --> 00:54:32.793
I don\'t\' think we\'re allowed to touch those.
00:54:32.793 --> 00:54:34.073
[laughing]
00:54:34.665 --> 00:54:35.838
- Appreciate the offer though.
00:54:35.838 --> 00:54:36.671
- Yeah.
00:54:38.057 --> 00:54:39.388
- Moral support.
00:54:39.388 --> 00:54:40.221
- Yeah.
00:54:42.578 --> 00:54:46.325
- I have a perfect ballot and I have to try... [laughing]
00:54:46.325 --> 00:54:47.158
- You got it!
00:54:47.158 --> 00:54:47.991
[cheering and applauding]
00:54:47.991 --> 00:54:48.824
- Whoa!
00:54:49.818 --> 00:54:51.730
Does she get some kind of prize?
00:54:52.188 --> 00:54:53.254
Lemme see the P.
00:54:53.254 --> 00:54:54.087
Let me see the--
00:54:54.087 --> 00:54:55.209
- The P.
- There is it.
00:54:55.209 --> 00:54:56.800
And it wasn\'t folded.
00:54:56.800 --> 00:54:57.660
- Alright.
- It was folded.
00:54:57.660 --> 00:54:58.721
- See the fold?
- It was.
00:54:58.721 --> 00:55:00.978
- See the fold?
- Yeah, but why didn\'t--?
00:55:00.978 --> 00:55:02.051
- Why didn\'t we see it before?
00:55:02.051 --> 00:55:03.408
Who knows?
00:55:03.408 --> 00:55:05.327
- [Steve] Alright, well, it was great meeting you.
00:55:05.327 --> 00:55:06.986
- It was great meeting you.
- Yeah.
00:55:06.986 --> 00:55:08.342
And you too.
00:55:08.342 --> 00:55:09.675
- Thank you.
- Thank you.
00:55:09.675 --> 00:55:10.508
- Yes, sir.
00:55:10.508 --> 00:55:11.807
- Good luck and thanks for everything today.
00:55:11.807 --> 00:55:12.778
- Yes.
00:55:12.778 --> 00:55:13.611
- Okay.
00:55:13.611 --> 00:55:14.444
Take care.
00:55:14.444 --> 00:55:15.277
You too.
00:55:22.417 --> 00:55:23.826
[exhaling]
00:55:24.201 --> 00:55:25.701
That was grueling.
00:55:27.144 --> 00:55:29.669
I wanna hear about what happened to you.
00:55:30.594 --> 00:55:32.963
- [Laverne] [sighs] I got tired.
00:55:32.963 --> 00:55:33.820
[laughing]
00:55:33.820 --> 00:55:35.253
- Me too.
00:55:35.253 --> 00:55:36.530
- Can somebody tell me something
00:55:36.530 --> 00:55:39.087
that isn\'t bad news about the results coming in?
00:55:39.087 --> 00:55:40.050
Has anybody heard anything?
00:55:40.050 --> 00:55:42.944
- Well, the New York Times is saying that
00:55:42.944 --> 00:55:45.014
from the numbers that are coming in already
00:55:45.014 --> 00:55:48.131
they\'re predicting that Hillary has an 81% chance
00:55:48.131 --> 00:55:52.624
of winning tonight, and there\'s a 51% chance that the Senate
00:55:52.624 --> 00:55:55.463
is gonna go Democratic as of the early returns.
00:55:55.463 --> 00:55:57.046
- [Claire] Only 51?
00:55:58.324 --> 00:55:59.157
- Yeah.
00:56:05.982 --> 00:56:09.065
So they\'re giving Nevada to Clinton,
00:56:10.055 --> 00:56:13.805
Virginia to Clinton, Pennsylvania to Clinton,
00:56:14.995 --> 00:56:17.421
Michigan to Clinton.
00:56:17.421 --> 00:56:19.497
That was the one they were worried about yesterday.
00:56:19.497 --> 00:56:20.939
- [Claire] And Florida?
00:56:23.874 --> 00:56:26.791
- To Trump, they\'re giving Florida.
00:56:28.172 --> 00:56:31.481
Florida, oop, they\'re giving Trump North Carolina.
00:56:31.481 --> 00:56:32.631
[gasping]
00:56:36.818 --> 00:56:37.818
- Oh my god.
00:56:40.546 --> 00:56:41.696
- And Ohio.
00:56:45.713 --> 00:56:47.613
Clinton 276,
00:56:47.621 --> 00:56:49.066
275,
00:56:49.066 --> 00:56:50.010
273.
00:56:50.010 --> 00:56:51.228
It keeps changing.
00:56:51.228 --> 00:56:52.741
Trump, 271.
00:56:52.741 --> 00:56:55.188
It\'s shifting as they\'re getting more reports in.
00:56:55.188 --> 00:56:56.254
- [Claire] It\'s close though.
00:56:56.254 --> 00:56:58.262
- It\'s so close that it\'s going back and forth
00:56:58.262 --> 00:56:59.679
across that line.
00:57:02.868 --> 00:57:05.619
- [Reporter] Here are the too close to call states.
00:57:05.619 --> 00:57:08.259
Florida of the battlegrounds,
00:57:08.259 --> 00:57:09.342
Pennsylvania,
00:57:11.704 --> 00:57:12.537
Ohio,
00:57:14.537 --> 00:57:15.370
Georgia,
00:57:17.534 --> 00:57:18.675
Michigan.
00:57:19.175 --> 00:57:20.527
- [Claire] Jake Simpson.
00:57:20.527 --> 00:57:22.639
That\'s my son.
- North Carolina.
00:57:22.639 --> 00:57:24.410
- [Claire] Very articulately says,
00:57:24.410 --> 00:57:28.969
\"This shit is fucking scary,\" in his text to his mother.
00:57:30.877 --> 00:57:34.169
- It\'s all about the percentages that are in here.
00:57:34.169 --> 00:57:35.002
- Yeah.
00:57:37.252 --> 00:57:39.235
- You can\'t buy into the rest of it.
00:57:46.562 --> 00:57:48.420
- I don\'t know what to say.
00:57:48.420 --> 00:57:49.253
- I don\'t know.
00:57:49.253 --> 00:57:50.086
I\'m speechless.
00:57:50.086 --> 00:57:50.919
I\'m like--
00:57:50.919 --> 00:57:52.336
I\'m really--
00:57:52.336 --> 00:57:54.374
I\'m like numb and empty.
00:57:54.374 --> 00:57:57.051
- [Claire] Have you, like, lost all hope?
00:57:57.051 --> 00:57:58.589
Like, do you think it\'s over?
00:57:58.589 --> 00:57:59.422
Or do you--?
00:57:59.422 --> 00:58:00.255
- I don\'t know.
00:58:00.255 --> 00:58:02.886
My father actually was trying to bolster me.
00:58:02.886 --> 00:58:05.203
My father was just saying, \"It\'s not over yet.\"
00:58:05.203 --> 00:58:06.036
\"It\'s too close.\"
00:58:06.036 --> 00:58:07.744
\"Don\'t give up.\"
00:58:07.744 --> 00:58:09.462
\"It\'s not definitive.\"
00:58:09.462 --> 00:58:10.441
You know.
00:58:10.441 --> 00:58:11.722
That\'s my dad.
00:58:12.414 --> 00:58:14.461
- [Reporter] Now that will give them
00:58:14.461 --> 00:58:17.844
a patch of blue west of Texas.
00:58:21.990 --> 00:58:24.754
- Are we gonna really do this to ourselves?
00:58:24.754 --> 00:58:27.447
- Well, you don\'t have to.
- What should we do?
00:58:27.447 --> 00:58:29.307
- I can\'t, I mean, every little county
00:58:29.307 --> 00:58:31.111
we\'re gonna have to watch them tell us
00:58:31.111 --> 00:58:34.743
why they switched over to Trump after voting for Obama?
00:58:34.743 --> 00:58:38.334
I mean, I don\'t even understand what\'s happening.
00:58:42.194 --> 00:58:43.592
- We probably should eat something.
00:58:43.592 --> 00:58:45.448
Maybe that would make us feel a little better.
00:58:45.448 --> 00:58:48.798
- Where does humanity and human dignity end up in this crap?
00:58:48.798 --> 00:58:52.177
He\'s like the representative of every disgusting,
00:58:52.177 --> 00:58:55.327
bad, negative, worst part of human nature
00:58:55.327 --> 00:58:57.594
value that\'s out there.
00:58:57.594 --> 00:58:58.894
I mean, all I keep seeing is him
00:58:58.894 --> 00:59:01.171
mocking that journalist who\'s handicapped
00:59:01.171 --> 00:59:03.904
and laughing while he\'s, like, twisting himself.
00:59:03.904 --> 00:59:07.593
That\'s who they want him-- I mean, who votes for that?
00:59:08.560 --> 00:59:10.227
And the pussy thing?
00:59:11.986 --> 00:59:13.633
And he didn\'t pay taxes.
00:59:13.633 --> 00:59:14.982
And he never gave his--
00:59:14.982 --> 00:59:17.373
what the fuck are they all voting for?
00:59:17.373 --> 00:59:19.456
What are they voting for?
00:59:22.348 --> 00:59:23.349
What are they voting for?
00:59:23.349 --> 00:59:24.890
They\'re voting for that?
00:59:24.890 --> 00:59:26.085
That\'s all he represents.
00:59:26.085 --> 00:59:27.720
He didn\'t represent anything else.
00:59:27.720 --> 00:59:30.223
He never presented any other value.
00:59:31.156 --> 00:59:32.280
I don\'t understand.
00:59:32.280 --> 00:59:33.113
They\'re humans.
00:59:33.113 --> 00:59:35.827
They\'ve been brought up in families with decent parents.
00:59:35.827 --> 00:59:38.827
How can they accept that and validate it?
00:59:57.431 --> 00:59:59.143
He has no boundaries.
00:59:59.143 --> 00:59:59.976
- [Trista] I know.
00:59:59.976 --> 01:00:03.089
- He has no boundaries and no understanding of democracy
01:00:03.089 --> 01:00:04.952
and no respect for the institutions
01:00:04.952 --> 01:00:07.471
and they\'re going to crumble in front of him
01:00:07.471 --> 01:00:10.325
because they\'re not strong enough to withstand that crap.
01:00:10.325 --> 01:00:12.031
This is how democracies end.
01:00:12.031 --> 01:00:15.255
This is like we just elected Caligula.
01:00:15.255 --> 01:00:17.822
This is the end of the Roman Empire, this is--
01:00:21.409 --> 01:00:23.659
[laughing]
01:00:24.599 --> 01:00:26.182
You don\'t think so?
01:00:28.467 --> 01:00:29.300
I\'m sorry.
01:00:29.300 --> 01:00:30.734
I\'m really feeling all of this.
01:00:30.734 --> 01:00:32.151
- That\'s alright.
01:00:33.886 --> 01:00:36.675
It\'s a completely appropriate hysteria.
01:00:36.675 --> 01:00:37.508
- Hysteria.
01:00:37.508 --> 01:00:38.341
I\'m sorry.
- Yes.
01:00:38.341 --> 01:00:39.958
No, I can tell it\'s hysteria from Claire.
01:00:39.958 --> 01:00:40.964
- I\'m not disagreeing with you.
01:00:40.964 --> 01:00:44.910
I\'ve got no basis to disagree with you, but I\'m just--
01:00:44.910 --> 01:00:46.564
I\'m sitting here thinking
01:00:46.564 --> 01:00:48.738
I wanna go lie in a hot bath with, like,
01:00:48.738 --> 01:00:51.245
a glass this tall of whiskey
01:00:51.245 --> 01:00:52.912
and I\'m sitting here
01:00:54.360 --> 01:00:55.702
with no whiskey.
01:00:55.702 --> 01:00:57.752
[laughing]
01:00:59.876 --> 01:01:02.427
And you\'re coming in every five seconds
01:01:02.427 --> 01:01:04.592
to announce the end of the world.
01:01:04.592 --> 01:01:05.425
- [Steve] Right.
01:01:05.425 --> 01:01:06.890
I\'m sorry.
- The complete.
01:01:06.890 --> 01:01:08.549
- [Steve] It\'s just, in my head, it\'s coming out.
01:01:08.549 --> 01:01:10.184
It\'s how I\'m feeling.
01:01:10.643 --> 01:01:12.718
- We\'re all in complete shock.
01:01:14.310 --> 01:01:16.726
But these fuckers have been sitting,
01:01:16.726 --> 01:01:20.927
talking, I mean MSNBC are the least guilty.
01:01:20.927 --> 01:01:22.510
- Egregious, yeah.
01:01:22.510 --> 01:01:23.760
- But them too.
01:01:24.725 --> 01:01:26.635
Not dealing with any issues.
01:01:26.635 --> 01:01:28.735
Not doing anything to educate the populace.
01:01:28.735 --> 01:01:30.144
Just \"Trump, Trump, Trump.\"
01:01:30.144 --> 01:01:31.397
That\'s all they\'ve talked about.
01:01:31.397 --> 01:01:32.897
- [Steve] Right, I know.
01:01:37.132 --> 01:01:37.965
- Oh.
01:01:37.965 --> 01:01:39.409
It is so fucked up.
01:01:39.867 --> 01:01:41.406
- I\'m getting texts, really, where
01:01:41.406 --> 01:01:44.537
my friend Robin just wrote like 10 times
01:01:44.537 --> 01:01:47.131
\"Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god.\"
01:01:47.131 --> 01:01:48.589
- [Claire] I\'m not going on Facebook,
01:01:48.589 --> 01:01:49.775
because all this sort of--
01:01:49.775 --> 01:01:51.735
- Oh yeah, I don\'t need that social media thing
01:01:51.735 --> 01:01:53.610
adding to this.
- Screaming.
01:01:53.610 --> 01:01:55.185
- Sort of like what I\'m doing to you.
01:01:55.185 --> 01:01:58.048
[laughing]
01:01:58.048 --> 01:01:59.435
- Steve.
- Now I got it.
01:01:59.435 --> 01:02:00.346
Okay, no.
01:02:00.346 --> 01:02:01.179
You know what?
01:02:01.179 --> 01:02:02.012
I got it.
01:02:02.012 --> 01:02:03.512
I\'m gonna stop it.
01:02:06.083 --> 01:02:07.916
- [Laverne] Food?
01:02:07.916 --> 01:02:10.326
- [Claire] Is that what you wanna do?
01:02:10.326 --> 01:02:12.051
- I think I wanna eat some food.
01:02:12.051 --> 01:02:14.371
- Okay.
- Is anybody hungry?
01:02:14.371 --> 01:02:17.746
- No, but I think it\'s a thing.
01:02:18.342 --> 01:02:19.544
I think I\'m gonna do that thing.
01:02:19.544 --> 01:02:20.413
- It\'s a thing.
01:02:20.422 --> 01:02:23.107
- [Laverne] Yeah, it\'s something for me to do.
01:02:24.557 --> 01:02:25.955
- I would join you.
01:02:25.955 --> 01:02:27.238
- [Laverne] Okay.
01:02:27.238 --> 01:02:28.511
- [Claire] I will join you, too.
01:02:28.511 --> 01:02:29.344
- Yeah?
01:02:34.506 --> 01:02:37.196
We\'ve talked a lot about policy this weekend,
01:02:37.196 --> 01:02:40.696
which is amazingly important.
01:02:41.319 --> 01:02:43.129
This is about process.
01:02:43.129 --> 01:02:46.711
If you make it so hard and complicated
01:02:46.711 --> 01:02:50.458
for someone to be able to vote today,
01:02:50.458 --> 01:02:53.858
do you think that they\'ll do that again four years from now
01:02:53.858 --> 01:02:56.935
or two years from now or six years from now?
01:02:56.935 --> 01:03:01.935
But you don\'t wanna hear people say, like we have heard,
01:03:02.204 --> 01:03:03.903
\"Well, my vote doesn\'t count
01:03:03.903 --> 01:03:05.964
\'cause I can\'t even get in there to vote.\"
01:03:05.964 --> 01:03:07.829
- There\'s one thing I wanted to also point out
01:03:07.829 --> 01:03:11.445
when we talk about how critical this work is.
01:03:11.445 --> 01:03:14.590
I mentioned earlier the situation in North Carolina
01:03:14.590 --> 01:03:16.635
just before election day when we found out
01:03:16.635 --> 01:03:18.962
voters had been purged from the polls
01:03:18.962 --> 01:03:22.380
and that was in three counties in North Carolina.
01:03:22.380 --> 01:03:26.345
The NAACP only had the evidence and the resources
01:03:26.345 --> 01:03:29.350
to bring a lawsuit immediately for those three counties,
01:03:29.350 --> 01:03:31.842
but North Carolina has 100 counties
01:03:31.842 --> 01:03:34.662
and all I kept thinking all day on election day is,
01:03:34.662 --> 01:03:37.389
what about the other 97 counties?
01:03:37.389 --> 01:03:40.150
- There\'s a lot of education that needs to occur
01:03:40.150 --> 01:03:43.375
because I think people are aware that there\'s a problem.
01:03:43.375 --> 01:03:44.697
I don\'t believe people are aware,
01:03:44.697 --> 01:03:46.454
and I certainly wasn\'t until just now,
01:03:46.454 --> 01:03:48.327
of the extent of the problem.
01:03:48.327 --> 01:03:50.908
The number, Laverne, that you just shared about 1200 people
01:03:50.908 --> 01:03:54.241
showing up to vote and only 598 of them
01:03:54.241 --> 01:03:56.731
able to cast a vote, is extraordinary.
01:03:56.731 --> 01:03:57.886
It\'s absolutely extraordinary.
01:03:57.886 --> 01:04:01.704
And that to me brings it into stark relief in a way that
01:04:01.704 --> 01:04:05.034
nothing I\'ve seen up to this moment has ever done.
01:04:07.275 --> 01:04:10.358
[piano music]
01:04:21.973 --> 01:04:24.500
- We\'ve had a lot of people
01:04:24.500 --> 01:04:28.025
saying that racism don\'t exist.
01:04:28.589 --> 01:04:31.255
Sexism is not real.
01:04:31.866 --> 01:04:36.304
You know, religion is no problem, you know, and all that.
01:04:36.304 --> 01:04:40.821
You know, in America, they never operated fair.
01:04:41.755 --> 01:04:43.045
Never.
01:04:43.045 --> 01:04:44.610
So why do we think that
01:04:44.610 --> 01:04:47.377
it\'s just gonna happen all of a sudden?
01:04:49.240 --> 01:04:50.379
It never been fair.
01:04:51.546 --> 01:04:52.379
Never.
01:04:53.463 --> 01:04:57.090
- The history of our country is a history of struggle
01:04:57.090 --> 01:05:01.289
for the right to have a voice and the right to have a say
01:05:01.289 --> 01:05:04.880
in the political decisions that impact our daily lives.
01:05:07.246 --> 01:05:10.949
- My feeling was, we\'ve done it before, it should be over.
01:05:12.007 --> 01:05:13.174
We\'ve done it.
01:05:14.095 --> 01:05:16.205
Now let\'s move on and fix some other things?
01:05:16.205 --> 01:05:17.074
Oh no?
