Strong-willed, funny, and charismatic, Belgian triathlon champion Marieke Vervoort’s time is running out. At 29, paralyzed from the waist down, a debilitating, chronic illness she has had for 15 years has begun to take its toll. As Marieke’s strength falters and her pain increases, she decides to take control by signing papers to die by the controversial procedure of medical aid-in-dying (MAID), legal in her home country. Liberated and empowered by having the legal permission to die, Marieke rediscovers the freedom and thrill of competition. For over a decade, all she wants is to live fully. Through sheer willpower, she qualifies for the Paralympics and wins Gold in Paralympic and World Championship wheelchair-racing. While managing the struggle and emotions of friends and family as they try to accept her decision, Marieke continues to live life to the max: international travel, media attention, and a wildly physical bucket list, including indoor-skydiving, Lamborghini racing and bungee-jumping. With unlimited access, ADDICTED TO LIFE intimately documents this determined, vulnerable, and astonishing athlete through her final inspirational three years. Marieke’s acceptance of death becomes an affirmation of life. In this timely film, Marieke’s story demystifies one of the most controversial issues of our time.

"This film shows a very real human experience that would make for good class discussion and debate."
Meghan Kallman | State Senator, Rhode Island District 15
"ADDICTED TO LIFE tells an unflinching, yet tender story: following the experience of an elite athlete with a progressive degenerative disease, the film highlights the complexity, pain, and beauty of being able to choose to end one's life with dignity."
Brown University Warren Alpert Medical School | Tom Bledsoe, MD MACP
"This film made a deep impression on both the medical students and the faculty in attendance. Those new to the topic left with much to think about and those with settled opinions left unsettled, also with much to think about. The film is a powerful presentation of the issues around medical assistance in dying and even euthanasia and its powerful effect is on both the emotional and intellectual levels for the audience. The experience of watching it highlights important issues for those who care about and care for persons with serious illness."

00:11:34.320 --> 00:11:37.920
- That's only normal.
- Oh, come on.
00:11:39.480 --> 00:11:42.320
Mom and Dad aren't my friends,
they're my parents.
00:11:42.400 --> 00:11:47.520
- We'll invite them to the next party.
- No way.
00:11:48.080 --> 00:11:51.360
- But I will.
- Then I won't come.
00:11:55.920 --> 00:12:00.320
It's been getting a little better,
but still...
00:12:00.400 --> 00:12:01.640
(trimmer buzzing)
00:12:01.720 --> 00:12:04.040
But it's still...
00:12:05.480 --> 00:12:07.400
I have been trying.
00:12:08.800 --> 00:12:11.360
They have also put in some effort,
a few times.
00:12:11.440 --> 00:12:15.680
But my dad gets it more than my mom does.
00:12:18.120 --> 00:12:21.040
- Yes, but it's different.
She has a mother's heart.
00:12:21.120 --> 00:12:23.400
(trimmer buzzing)
00:12:24.400 --> 00:12:26.960
(upbeat music)
00:12:38.000 --> 00:12:41.280
- [Host] Thanks for joining us today,
ladies and gentlemen,
00:12:41.360 --> 00:12:46.200
for Marieke and her new book,
"The Other Side of the Medal."
00:12:46.280 --> 00:12:49.600
- I've spoken my mind without holding back.
00:12:49.680 --> 00:12:52.720
The Flemish public
should understand that,
00:12:52.800 --> 00:12:55.600
even with a serious disability,
00:12:55.680 --> 00:13:01.120
with all the pain,
you can still do things.
00:13:01.200 --> 00:13:04.800
I thought that,
after quitting professional sports,
00:13:04.880 --> 00:13:08.040
that I would fall into a deep depression,
00:13:08.120 --> 00:13:09.920
but that didn't happen.
00:13:10.000 --> 00:13:17.080
I'm lucky to have lots of great friends
and family
00:13:17.160 --> 00:13:20.120
who are there for me in the good times,
00:13:20.200 --> 00:13:24.200
but most of all,
they are there in the bad times.
00:13:24.720 --> 00:13:26.680
Giddy up, go.
00:13:26.800 --> 00:13:28.200
(upbeat music)
00:13:38.240 --> 00:13:39.640
Caroline with a C?
00:13:41.360 --> 00:13:44.760
'Dear Caroline:
I hope my life story inspires you.
00:13:44.840 --> 00:13:46.080
Love, Marieke and Zenn.'
00:13:49.200 --> 00:13:50.200
(metals chiming)
00:13:50.280 --> 00:13:52.000
(dog barking)
00:13:52.080 --> 00:13:54.040
Zenn is really Zen, huh?
00:13:55.880 --> 00:13:59.120
She means everything to me,
right Zenn?
00:14:02.960 --> 00:14:04.960
Don't kiss me like that.
00:14:05.040 --> 00:14:07.480
They're gonna think it's a sex movie.
00:14:08.920 --> 00:14:10.600
Fetch.
00:14:11.440 --> 00:14:13.880
Come. Find it. Fetch.
00:14:14.000 --> 00:14:16.600
(upbeat music)
00:14:18.280 --> 00:14:19.720
Find it. Fetch.
00:14:20.680 --> 00:14:22.160
(Marieke laughing)
00:14:22.240 --> 00:14:24.840
(upbeat music)
00:14:34.240 --> 00:14:36.960
(engine revving)
00:14:44.440 --> 00:14:48.440
Zennie, I love you!
00:14:48.520 --> 00:14:51.080
(upbeat music)
00:14:54.040 --> 00:14:55.960
(elevator beeping)
00:15:01.120 --> 00:15:02.360
- Hey, buddy.
00:15:02.440 --> 00:15:03.760
(Odette laughing)
00:15:03.840 --> 00:15:07.080
Hi, sweetheart.
- Hi, Mom.
00:15:07.760 --> 00:15:08.760
Hi, Mom.
00:15:09.600 --> 00:15:11.320
(both kiss)
00:15:11.400 --> 00:15:13.480
Look, what a nice picture here.
00:15:13.560 --> 00:15:14.840
- Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:15:14.920 --> 00:15:16.760
- Look at me!
00:15:16.840 --> 00:15:18.920
What a nice baby.
00:15:19.000 --> 00:15:20.000
- Yes.
00:15:20.960 --> 00:15:22.040
There you were nice.
00:15:22.120 --> 00:15:24.160
- They always say:
00:15:24.240 --> 00:15:27.440
"Ugly people get beautiful children."
00:15:27.520 --> 00:15:29.160
(all laughing)
00:15:32.000 --> 00:15:34.120
- Thank you, thank you.
00:15:36.400 --> 00:15:37.240
- Cut!
00:15:39.680 --> 00:15:42.000
Back then everything was perfect.
00:15:42.080 --> 00:15:43.080
- [Odette] Yes.
00:15:43.640 --> 00:15:46.520
- A normal, normal child.
00:15:46.600 --> 00:15:48.880
Look, how young I was
and I helped clean the house.
00:15:48.960 --> 00:15:51.680
- [Odette] Yes, yes, working.
- [Marieke] Working!
00:15:51.760 --> 00:15:53.000
(Odette laughing)
00:15:53.080 --> 00:15:56.120
- [Marieke] I really
hated wearing dresses,
00:15:56.200 --> 00:15:59.760
but at that age, when you were
young, your mother chose.
00:15:59.880 --> 00:16:01.880
Ah, such ugly clothes.
00:16:02.760 --> 00:16:06.240
I was more a boy than a girl,
00:16:07.080 --> 00:16:10.760
I wanted to always wear pants and shorts
00:16:10.840 --> 00:16:14.080
and that kind of stuff.
00:16:14.160 --> 00:16:17.120
And now we know why, eh?
00:16:17.200 --> 00:16:19.720
(all chuckle)
00:16:21.200 --> 00:16:25.760
- It started over there already, no?
In Pisa?
00:16:25.840 --> 00:16:27.360
- [Jos] Marina Di Pisa.
00:16:27.440 --> 00:16:29.400
- [Marieke] Marina Di Pisa.
00:16:29.480 --> 00:16:30.520
(Jos laughing)
00:16:30.600 --> 00:16:33.400
My Achilles tendon, here.
00:16:33.480 --> 00:16:40.200
And every time when my heels
were touching the ground,
00:16:40.280 --> 00:16:46.120
it was like electricity
was going into my legs.
00:16:46.200 --> 00:16:48.320
It was very, very painful.
00:16:48.400 --> 00:16:50.200
And when you are in puberty,
00:16:50.280 --> 00:16:53.240
and doctors cannot find what's wrong,
00:16:53.320 --> 00:16:56.280
they don't see it
and they immediately say,
00:16:56.360 --> 00:16:57.640
"It's not there the problem,
00:16:57.720 --> 00:17:01.000
but it's here, it's all in your mind."
00:17:01.080 --> 00:17:05.040
And then I met Dr. Molenaers and he said,
00:17:05.120 --> 00:17:06.960
"There is really something wrong,
00:17:07.040 --> 00:17:08.840
we don't know what it is,
00:17:08.920 --> 00:17:10.720
but we're gonna treat you
00:17:10.800 --> 00:17:14.720
like there is something
really wrong, physically."
00:17:14.800 --> 00:17:19.080
And I was on my good way
until insurance said,
00:17:19.160 --> 00:17:22.000
"We still don't know what your disease is,
00:17:22.080 --> 00:17:24.520
and we don't pay."
00:17:24.600 --> 00:17:26.960
So everything was for nothing.
00:17:27.640 --> 00:17:32.400
- The doctor has promised
that you could walk again
00:17:32.480 --> 00:17:34.400
in the house.
- [Marieke] In house, yeah.
00:17:34.480 --> 00:17:38.000
- Not far, but in the house.
00:17:38.080 --> 00:17:41.840
- When you are able just to stand up,
00:17:41.920 --> 00:17:45.560
it already really means a lot.
00:17:45.720 --> 00:17:46.840
- [Host] Marieke Vervoort!
00:17:46.920 --> 00:17:49.520
(upbeat music)
00:17:51.440 --> 00:17:53.920
What is the diagnosis now?
00:17:54.000 --> 00:17:58.560
- They diagnosed me with
"reflex sympathetic dystrophy."
00:17:58.640 --> 00:18:00.600
- And it...
- It's a mouthful
00:18:00.680 --> 00:18:02.960
but actually they found out
00:18:03.040 --> 00:18:05.880
that I have "progressive myelopathy."
00:18:05.960 --> 00:18:09.280
- Progressive? That doesn't sound good.
00:18:09.360 --> 00:18:11.760
- No. It continually gets worse.
00:18:11.840 --> 00:18:15.280
The problem is in the spinal cord.
00:18:15.360 --> 00:18:19.000
- And what's happening to your spinal cord?
00:18:19.080 --> 00:18:20.760
- It's causing paralysis and stuff.
00:18:20.840 --> 00:18:24.000
I hope that it will stabilize.
00:18:24.640 --> 00:18:26.680
No one can live like that.
It destroys you.
00:18:26.880 --> 00:18:29.600
- Purely the pain?
- Yes.
00:18:29.680 --> 00:18:32.880
Passing out from the pain,
who could bear that?
00:18:33.080 --> 00:18:38.000
I'm unsure about the future.
We'll have to see.
00:18:38.480 --> 00:18:41.120
But hope springs eternal, as they say.
00:18:41.480 --> 00:18:44.080
(upbeat music)
00:18:45.960 --> 00:18:48.080
Ever since I was young,
00:18:48.160 --> 00:18:51.320
I've been doing sports
and I trained really hard for it.
00:18:51.400 --> 00:18:54.480
(upbeat music)
00:18:54.560 --> 00:18:55.840
I was a winner.
00:18:56.760 --> 00:19:00.000
(water whirling)
00:19:00.080 --> 00:19:02.680
(upbeat music)
00:19:04.200 --> 00:19:06.600
In 2004 I started up.
00:19:06.680 --> 00:19:10.080
I did triathlon at a really high level,
00:19:10.160 --> 00:19:13.720
and did a motivational
speech in Lanzarote.
00:19:14.280 --> 00:19:18.760
And 2007 in Hamburg in Germany,
00:19:18.840 --> 00:19:23.840
I was not only World Champion
in my disabled category,
00:19:24.400 --> 00:19:27.400
but overall with all the females.
00:19:27.480 --> 00:19:29.560
(upbeat music)
00:19:29.640 --> 00:19:30.680
Yes.
00:19:31.440 --> 00:19:32.880
I was so proud.
00:19:32.960 --> 00:19:33.960
Yeah.
00:19:38.000 --> 00:19:43.400
On September 28, 2007
the plane took off.
00:19:43.800 --> 00:19:47.440
And I looked out of the window
tears rolled down my cheeks.
00:19:48.400 --> 00:19:49.400
Unbelievable.
00:19:52.280 --> 00:19:55.520
"My dream is coming true.
I am on way to Hawaii."
00:19:55.800 --> 00:19:58.960
I was going to do the
mother of the triathlons,
00:19:59.040 --> 00:20:02.200
I was going to do the Ironman of Hawaii.
00:20:02.280 --> 00:20:05.040
Wow, I couldn't believe it!
00:20:05.120 --> 00:20:07.000
Only for crazy people,
00:20:07.080 --> 00:20:10.360
3,800 meter swim,
00:20:10.440 --> 00:20:14.400
180 kilometers with the hand cycle,
00:20:14.480 --> 00:20:17.960
and then the marathon of 42 kilometers
00:20:18.040 --> 00:20:19.800
with the racing chair.
00:20:20.480 --> 00:20:22.280
And I did the swim.
00:20:22.360 --> 00:20:25.600
One hour, 17 only on my arms.
00:20:25.680 --> 00:20:27.480
(crowd cheering)
00:20:29.680 --> 00:20:33.600
And I started with the bicycle,
00:20:33.680 --> 00:20:35.640
and it was so heavy.
00:20:35.720 --> 00:20:37.800
There was a lot of wind.
00:20:37.880 --> 00:20:39.920
The limit time for people
00:20:40.000 --> 00:20:43.120
with and without disability is the same.
00:20:43.200 --> 00:20:47.520
I was only 15 minutes
too late in the changing zone.
00:20:47.600 --> 00:20:51.560
They didn't allow me
to do the last part of the race.
00:20:51.640 --> 00:20:54.240
(somber music)
00:20:57.800 --> 00:21:00.960
Really disappointed,
I turned back to Belgium.
00:21:01.040 --> 00:21:06.480
It was really a disaster.
00:21:08.320 --> 00:21:11.480
I'm actually not doing very well.
00:21:11.560 --> 00:21:17.560
At the end of January
the disease got worse all of a sudden.
00:21:18.120 --> 00:21:20.280
(gentle music)
00:21:20.360 --> 00:21:23.520
Looking at the future scares me.
00:21:26.560 --> 00:21:31.440
(gentle music)
00:21:31.520 --> 00:21:36.320
In 2008, I had to stop doing triathlons
00:21:36.400 --> 00:21:38.600
which had been my life.
00:21:39.120 --> 00:21:45.120
And then I fell
into a very deep depression.
00:21:45.200 --> 00:21:49.440
And I wanted to commit suicide.
00:21:49.600 --> 00:21:52.200
(gentle music)
00:21:55.760 --> 00:22:00.000
At one point, I told my psychologist
00:22:01.000 --> 00:22:04.120
"Look, I've collected all my medication.
00:22:04.600 --> 00:22:09.720
I can't live this life anymore."
00:22:11.000 --> 00:22:14.680
She put me in touch
with Dr. Wim Distelmans
00:22:15.200 --> 00:22:22.040
the man who was behind
the euthanasia law in Belgium.
00:22:22.120 --> 00:22:28.800
He told me, "Marieke,
it doesn't have to be like this.
00:22:28.880 --> 00:22:32.560
Here, there is such a thing
as a euthanasia law."
00:22:46.640 --> 00:22:47.760
(gentle music)
00:22:47.840 --> 00:22:50.600
(birds chirping)
00:23:03.240 --> 00:23:05.160
- Here she is!
- Hello, Wim.
00:23:05.240 --> 00:23:07.680
- How are you doing, sweetie?
- Not so good.
00:23:11.920 --> 00:23:14.160
- Would you take a seat there?
- Yes.
00:23:14.240 --> 00:23:19.560
- I'm going to take my jacket off.
I thought it was 2.30 PM.
00:23:19.840 --> 00:23:23.200
- So, the first contact you had
with each other was in 2008?
00:23:23.280 --> 00:23:26.280
- Yes. I had just had to give up
my favorite sport.
00:23:26.360 --> 00:23:29.400
I had to give up more and more
all the time.
00:23:29.520 --> 00:23:33.280
And then I contacted Dr. Distelmans.
00:23:33.480 --> 00:23:36.080
And that is how the story started.
00:23:36.520 --> 00:23:40.640
- In Belgium, we have a good law.
00:23:40.720 --> 00:23:45.600
And only three countries in the world
have the same law.
00:23:45.760 --> 00:23:48.400
It's really liberating.
00:23:48.480 --> 00:23:51.200
At the Federal Euthanasia Commission,
we see that
00:23:51.280 --> 00:23:54.760
the main reason
why people request euthanasia
00:23:54.840 --> 00:23:56.920
is loss of control,
00:23:58.720 --> 00:24:03.080
dependence on others
and loss of self-determination.
00:24:03.160 --> 00:24:05.680
In fact, these euthanasia affidavits
00:24:05.760 --> 00:24:07.400
give the patients a sense of security
00:24:07.480 --> 00:24:09.760
that allows them to go on living.
00:24:09.840 --> 00:24:12.240
She is limited because of her disability,
00:24:12.320 --> 00:24:15.040
but she still has control.
00:24:15.120 --> 00:24:18.720
She is still young now,
but back then she was very young.
00:24:19.000 --> 00:24:22.520
And it's a pity when someone that young
00:24:22.600 --> 00:24:23.800
says she wants to quit living.
00:24:23.880 --> 00:24:27.080
- But this contradicts
what some people have said about you.
00:24:27.160 --> 00:24:29.360
Some people call you Dr. Death.
00:24:29.440 --> 00:24:34.760
- The thing I always say at my talks is,
00:24:35.040 --> 00:24:39.720
"Look, people often see euthanasia
as murder.
00:24:39.800 --> 00:24:44.320
Euthanasia means a lot more than that.
It prolongs life."
00:24:44.400 --> 00:24:47.400
There would be fewer suicides
00:24:47.480 --> 00:24:50.640
if there were a euthanasia law in place.
00:24:50.720 --> 00:24:54.120
- So, Doctor, are you afraid of death?
00:24:54.200 --> 00:24:55.600
- I don't want to die.
00:24:55.680 --> 00:24:58.480
- You are afraid of it? Or...
00:24:58.560 --> 00:24:59.880
- I'm not afraid of death.
00:24:59.960 --> 00:25:04.200
But I am afraid of the part
just before death.
00:25:04.280 --> 00:25:06.920
The transition between life and death.
00:25:07.000 --> 00:25:08.000
- Yeah.
00:25:08.120 --> 00:25:12.280
- I have seen a lot of people die
00:25:12.360 --> 00:25:14.800
in a way I would not want to die.
00:25:16.400 --> 00:25:17.680
(gentle music)
00:25:17.760 --> 00:25:20.600
(camera shutters)
00:25:20.680 --> 00:25:25.360
- Wim is like my rock I can always turn to.
00:25:27.680 --> 00:25:30.560
- Here you go.
- Thank you.
00:25:32.880 --> 00:25:38.560
- When those euthanasia papers
were confirmed it was like...
00:25:38.960 --> 00:25:40.080
Bam.
00:25:40.320 --> 00:25:44.040
Something heavy was falling off me.
00:25:44.120 --> 00:25:47.280
I had my own life under control.
00:25:47.360 --> 00:25:50.080
And look, I'm still here.
00:25:50.160 --> 00:25:54.200
You're always doing more
and more because you know
00:25:54.280 --> 00:26:01.120
you've got your own life in your hands
00:26:01.200 --> 00:26:04.080
because you can say when's enough.
00:26:04.160 --> 00:26:06.720
(gentle music)
00:26:08.600 --> 00:26:10.560
(crowd cheering)
00:26:10.640 --> 00:26:12.120
(Marieke screaming)
00:26:12.200 --> 00:26:14.760
(upbeat music)
00:26:25.560 --> 00:26:28.880
(bell chiming)
00:26:28.960 --> 00:26:32.360
(Marieke screaming)
00:26:32.440 --> 00:26:33.480
It's really crazy.
00:26:33.560 --> 00:26:36.440
I quit top sports,
00:26:36.520 --> 00:26:39.000
but I've gotten busier than ever.
00:26:39.080 --> 00:26:41.640
(upbeat music)
00:26:49.280 --> 00:26:51.960
(bird chirping)
00:26:52.040 --> 00:26:53.400
- Cheers.
00:26:53.480 --> 00:26:54.960
- [All] Cheers.
00:26:55.040 --> 00:26:57.760
(plane whirring)
00:27:02.520 --> 00:27:03.520
- Stay!
00:27:05.800 --> 00:27:07.560
- Zennie!
- Zennie!
00:27:08.640 --> 00:27:11.280
A little higher. Yes.
00:27:11.360 --> 00:27:12.840
- My matey!
00:27:12.920 --> 00:27:15.440
(both kiss)
00:27:17.000 --> 00:27:19.400
(indistinct chatters)
00:27:19.480 --> 00:27:23.680
She is my biggest supporter ever.
My dearest treasure.
00:27:23.760 --> 00:27:26.800
She follows me everywhere.
And...
00:27:27.760 --> 00:27:29.600
And friendship forever, eh?
00:27:30.680 --> 00:27:32.600
- Hi sweetie.
00:27:32.680 --> 00:27:34.920
- Hi, sweetheart.
- Hey.
00:27:35.000 --> 00:27:36.400
- How are you?
00:27:36.480 --> 00:27:37.840
- I'm very well.
00:27:37.920 --> 00:27:39.480
- Nice to see you!
00:27:39.560 --> 00:27:41.560
- Oh the hair.
- Yeah, Nike.
00:27:41.640 --> 00:27:43.760
- Crazy girl, oh crazy girl.
00:27:43.840 --> 00:27:44.840
- Yeah.
00:27:46.120 --> 00:27:48.040
- Hello, everybody.
00:27:48.120 --> 00:27:50.720
Is everybody happy in the house?
00:27:50.800 --> 00:27:53.000
- [Audience] Yeah!
00:27:53.080 --> 00:27:56.600
- I am very happy that you are all present.
00:27:56.680 --> 00:27:58.040
(gentle music)
00:27:58.120 --> 00:28:02.120
- You all received an invitation
for a "dream concert."
00:28:02.200 --> 00:28:05.480
Marieke really enjoys meditating.
00:28:05.560 --> 00:28:09.800
To her, those moments
are profoundly relaxing.
00:28:09.880 --> 00:28:13.760
Welcome to the dream concert
"Believe You Can."
00:28:16.360 --> 00:28:19.440
(instrumental music)
00:28:54.120 --> 00:28:56.680
(bowl chiming)
00:29:05.080 --> 00:29:07.520
- I've never met someone
like you to be honest.
00:29:07.600 --> 00:29:10.440
You're a huge, huge inspiration.
00:29:10.520 --> 00:29:12.880
You know my expression for you.
00:29:12.960 --> 00:29:15.440
Well, I'm not gonna say
this on camera, you know it.
00:29:15.520 --> 00:29:17.240
(all laughing)
00:29:17.320 --> 00:29:18.840
- A woman with balls.
00:29:18.920 --> 00:29:22.160
(all laughing)
00:29:22.240 --> 00:29:26.400
- It was one of the nice
words I learned in Flemish,
00:29:26.480 --> 00:29:29.400
and I had a nice way of expressing it
00:29:29.480 --> 00:29:32.520
because I truly believe in Marieke,
00:29:32.600 --> 00:29:34.680
she really is
a woman with balls.
00:29:34.760 --> 00:29:37.000
(all laughing)
00:29:37.080 --> 00:29:38.240
- [Marieke] I love you!
00:29:38.320 --> 00:29:39.440
- I love you back.
00:29:39.520 --> 00:29:40.960
(all laughing)
00:29:41.040 --> 00:29:44.920
- How did I meet Marieke?
00:29:45.000 --> 00:29:48.280
They were looking
for a 'sports godmother' for Marieke.
00:29:48.360 --> 00:29:50.040
(upbeat music)
00:29:50.120 --> 00:29:52.240
- A young girl in a wheelchair
00:29:52.320 --> 00:29:55.200
that wants to do the Iron Man in Hawaii.
00:29:56.560 --> 00:29:58.640
I was on television at that time.
00:29:58.720 --> 00:30:02.000
They asked me, "Maybe you
can help us to get her
00:30:02.080 --> 00:30:03.360
the money we need?"
00:30:03.440 --> 00:30:05.400
(upbeat music)
00:30:05.480 --> 00:30:08.040
(audience clapping)
00:30:08.120 --> 00:30:11.200
Of course, she is a top athlete.
00:30:11.280 --> 00:30:12.840
You have to be stubborn,
00:30:12.920 --> 00:30:14.640
you have to be a fighter.
00:30:14.720 --> 00:30:16.680
Somebody who wins.
00:30:16.760 --> 00:30:18.960
- [Announcer] Women's
100 meters, T52 final.
00:30:19.960 --> 00:30:22.320
Marieke Vervoort of Belgium in six.
00:30:22.400 --> 00:30:26.160
(spectators cheering)
00:30:26.240 --> 00:30:27.080
And they're away.
00:30:28.640 --> 00:30:30.960
It's the two American girls away well,
00:30:31.040 --> 00:30:35.280
but it's Marieke Vervoort
of Belgium in lane six
00:30:35.360 --> 00:30:36.400
who is going extremely well.
00:30:36.480 --> 00:30:38.600
Marieke Vervoort of
Belgium's gonna win it.
00:30:38.680 --> 00:30:40.440
Vervoort, and here comes the Canadian,
00:30:40.520 --> 00:30:41.760
but she's left it a little too late.
00:30:41.840 --> 00:30:43.560
Marieke Vervoort of Belgium
00:30:43.640 --> 00:30:46.080
wins the 100 meters T52 final.
00:30:46.160 --> 00:30:49.840
(Marieke shouting)
00:30:49.920 --> 00:30:53.280
(spectators applauding)
00:30:56.800 --> 00:30:58.160
- I did it.
00:30:58.240 --> 00:30:59.480
(Marieke screaming)
00:31:04.360 --> 00:31:05.800
- [Announcer] It's been rounded down to
00:31:05.880 --> 00:31:08.040
a new championship record
00:31:08.120 --> 00:31:10.040
for Marieke Vervoort of Belgium.
00:31:10.120 --> 00:31:13.920
(spectators cheering)
00:31:14.000 --> 00:31:16.200
- [Announcer] Gold in the one, the two,
00:31:16.280 --> 00:31:18.120
and now the 400 meters.
00:31:18.200 --> 00:31:20.800
A hat trick of titles in this T52.
00:31:20.880 --> 00:31:23.800
(orchestral music)
00:31:26.160 --> 00:31:28.000
- Ms. Marieke Vervoort.
00:31:28.080 --> 00:31:29.320
- Thank you. It's an honor.
00:31:29.400 --> 00:31:32.000
I'd like to give you a big hug.
00:31:33.160 --> 00:31:34.960
Thank you. Bye.
00:31:35.200 --> 00:31:37.760
(gentle music)
00:32:03.440 --> 00:32:04.520
Oh, it hurts. Help.
00:32:04.600 --> 00:32:07.440
- Yes, that's what I'm doing. Really.
00:32:07.520 --> 00:32:10.120
(Marieke groaning)
00:32:10.360 --> 00:32:11.760
(gentle music)
00:32:35.480 --> 00:32:37.360
(Marieke choking and groaning)
00:32:56.960 --> 00:32:59.680
(dog barking)
00:33:01.840 --> 00:33:06.600
- I dream every time that I'm dying
00:33:06.680 --> 00:33:11.640
and it's so scary when I dream it.
00:33:12.560 --> 00:33:16.960
If you can't breathe
and you can do nothing about it.
00:33:17.040 --> 00:33:19.600
(gentle music)
00:33:29.520 --> 00:33:31.080
(utensils clunking)
00:33:31.160 --> 00:33:33.520
- Marieke visits us and she is happy.
00:33:33.600 --> 00:33:36.200
- You'd like her to be happy all the time,
00:33:36.280 --> 00:33:39.440
but she may just as well feel awful later.
00:33:39.720 --> 00:33:45.280
- Yes. Then you feel so powerless.
00:33:45.360 --> 00:33:47.360
You can't do anything.
00:33:47.440 --> 00:33:51.960
You can't help her.
You want to help her, but you can't.
00:33:52.560 --> 00:33:55.200
It's terrible to see.
00:33:55.280 --> 00:33:59.040
- You really cannot help.
All you can do is
00:33:59.120 --> 00:34:01.240
make sure
00:34:01.320 --> 00:34:03.800
she has at least a bit
of comfort at those moments.
00:34:03.880 --> 00:34:08.200
- And make sure she doesn't hurt herself
during a spasm.
00:34:08.320 --> 00:34:10.920
- And keep her from falling out of bed.
00:34:12.400 --> 00:34:16.520
- So, I am very scared
about the moment when...
00:34:17.400 --> 00:34:19.360
Marieke is no longer among us.
00:34:19.440 --> 00:34:21.760
I have no idea how I will react
00:34:21.840 --> 00:34:24.920
or how I'll be able to process it.
00:34:25.000 --> 00:34:27.760
- It's just not possible.
- No.
00:34:27.840 --> 00:34:31.000
Things like that,
you can't really process. No.
00:34:33.440 --> 00:34:36.160
I don't want to cry.
I really don't want to cry.
00:34:36.240 --> 00:34:38.200
- I wouldn't do that.
- No.
00:34:44.200 --> 00:34:45.600
Just stop.
00:34:52.680 --> 00:34:55.240
(gentle music)
00:35:12.240 --> 00:35:14.800
(phone beeping)
00:35:14.880 --> 00:35:16.800
- [Marieke] Who's that?
00:35:20.040 --> 00:35:21.960
That's my favorite nurse.
00:35:22.320 --> 00:35:23.760
- Hi.
00:35:23.840 --> 00:35:25.600
- [Marieke] Pola?
00:35:25.680 --> 00:35:28.720
Does it matter that you
are you going to look
00:35:28.800 --> 00:35:32.360
at my bus that crashed
in the tree over there
00:35:32.440 --> 00:35:35.720
while they are catheterizing me?
00:35:35.800 --> 00:35:38.400
(gentle music)
00:35:44.320 --> 00:35:45.640
Zenn!
00:35:45.720 --> 00:35:50.440
Give me a hug. Give me a hug.
00:35:52.080 --> 00:35:53.200
Sleep.
00:35:54.080 --> 00:35:57.160
I wrote a whole paper.
00:35:57.840 --> 00:36:02.040
Maybe you can see it there,
behind my chair.
00:36:02.120 --> 00:36:03.880
Dear Sirs:
00:36:03.960 --> 00:36:05.560
With this letter,
00:36:05.640 --> 00:36:08.000
I would like to renew the approval
for my euthanasia
00:36:08.080 --> 00:36:14.520
that I already requested
and received in 2008.
00:36:14.600 --> 00:36:21.360
Since then, my disease has become
significantly worse.
00:36:21.640 --> 00:36:27.520
Now I am 38.
I should be in the prime of my life.
00:36:27.960 --> 00:36:32.000
But, that, alas, is not the case.
00:36:32.520 --> 00:36:35.280
All my movements cause pain.
00:36:35.360 --> 00:36:38.280
Slowly but surely, I am going blind.
00:36:38.360 --> 00:36:43.560
I really cannot keep living this way
much longer.
00:36:44.000 --> 00:36:46.560
Best wishes, Marieke.
00:36:46.960 --> 00:36:51.160
And here, I close with my date of birth
and signature.
00:36:55.760 --> 00:36:56.600
Hello!
00:36:58.080 --> 00:37:04.080
Jan and I are on a date
at EuroDisney in Paris.
00:37:04.880 --> 00:37:10.120
Tickets... Look, the big castle.
There are the ticket booths.
00:37:11.880 --> 00:37:16.160
Alright. Let's go to the castle.
Toodaloo!
00:37:19.520 --> 00:37:22.920
- [Jan] I've known Marieke since 2008.
00:37:23.000 --> 00:37:26.200
If Marieke was around
you'd always hear her.
00:37:26.280 --> 00:37:27.840
(rail rattling)
00:37:27.920 --> 00:37:29.520
Beautiful, huh?
00:37:31.600 --> 00:37:33.880
Are you ready?
00:37:40.320 --> 00:37:43.000
(Jan screaming)
00:37:54.680 --> 00:37:56.360
Was that fun?
00:37:57.040 --> 00:38:00.880
(indistinct chatter)
00:38:04.720 --> 00:38:05.800
(Marieke gushes)
00:38:05.880 --> 00:38:07.400
[Jan] Enjoy.
00:38:07.480 --> 00:38:12.840
[Jan] When she drank cava,
always in company,
00:38:12.920 --> 00:38:17.560
it would help her ease the pain.
00:38:18.160 --> 00:38:20.720
(gentle music)
00:38:32.440 --> 00:38:36.960
- I always tell my friend Jan, who's gay,
00:38:37.040 --> 00:38:41.160
if he didn't like boys,
and if I didn't like girls,
00:38:41.240 --> 00:38:43.240
we would have been a couple.
00:38:43.400 --> 00:38:48.840
And we just always have
a lot of fun together.
00:38:48.920 --> 00:38:50.760
It's just great.
00:38:52.120 --> 00:38:54.480
(engine revving)
00:38:54.560 --> 00:38:56.200
(gentle music)
00:38:56.280 --> 00:38:59.000
What a dog's life, eh, Zenn?
00:38:59.080 --> 00:39:03.160
So heavy, poor doggie.
00:39:03.240 --> 00:39:05.680
Poor little thing.
00:39:06.720 --> 00:39:09.400
- [Pola] What happened
when you burned yourself?
00:39:09.480 --> 00:39:13.160
- In 2014, the week before
00:39:13.240 --> 00:39:18.720
I was planning to do
the biggest race in Belgium,
00:39:19.000 --> 00:39:20.880
I was cooking pasta,
00:39:20.960 --> 00:39:23.160
and I had an epileptic attack
00:39:23.240 --> 00:39:28.200
and all the hot boiling water
fell on my belly and my legs,
00:39:28.280 --> 00:39:31.360
and all my skin was peeling off,
00:39:31.440 --> 00:39:33.240
and it was really painful.
00:39:33.320 --> 00:39:34.360
I almost died.
00:39:34.440 --> 00:39:36.800
It was like a horror movie.
00:39:36.880 --> 00:39:39.440
(gentle music)
00:39:52.920 --> 00:39:54.680
You have my jacket, right?
- [Jan] Yup.
00:39:54.760 --> 00:39:56.080
- Yup!
00:39:56.320 --> 00:39:57.760
Ho, ho, ho!
00:39:57.840 --> 00:40:01.000
- Shh, they might kick you out!
00:40:03.080 --> 00:40:08.400
- Cluck cluck, oink oink, woof woof!
- Shh! It's a hospital.
00:40:10.640 --> 00:40:12.840
Zenn, Mommy will be back in a minute.
00:40:14.560 --> 00:40:18.960
- Alright, how is the champ?
- Meh.
00:40:21.680 --> 00:40:23.960
- OK. Can you install yourself up there?
00:40:24.040 --> 00:40:27.360
- Yes, I'll install myself.
00:40:27.440 --> 00:40:29.080
- [Thomas] Lots of ups and downs?
00:40:29.160 --> 00:40:30.720
- Yeah.
00:40:30.800 --> 00:40:34.960
Don't pull like that.
- Yes, that's good.
00:40:36.400 --> 00:40:40.560
But it's not as red as it was before.
00:40:40.640 --> 00:40:47.120
- But I've been wearing longer shorts to
cover everything up.
00:40:49.680 --> 00:40:54.640
- Actually, it is healing pretty well.
- It is, isn't it?
00:40:54.720 --> 00:40:56.240
Here it's a bit red.
00:40:56.320 --> 00:40:58.240
- Is your pump working okay?
- Yes.
00:40:58.320 --> 00:40:59.960
- Okay, good.
00:41:00.040 --> 00:41:02.880
Another new one?
- Yeah.
00:41:02.960 --> 00:41:05.600
- Everything is looking good.
- Yes.
00:41:05.680 --> 00:41:07.200
Wielemieke!
00:41:08.960 --> 00:41:11.560
And how is your sporting career?
- Over.
00:41:11.640 --> 00:41:14.240
- Over? And now?
- I can't do it anymore.
00:41:14.320 --> 00:41:15.760
- You don't have the strength anymore?
00:41:15.840 --> 00:41:18.800
- No. I am
in the hospital more than anywhere.
00:41:18.880 --> 00:41:21.200
- You've lost weight.
- Yes, I feel terrible.
00:41:21.280 --> 00:41:23.280
- You're losing more muscle.
00:41:23.360 --> 00:41:25.800
- I feel terrible.
00:41:25.880 --> 00:41:29.280
- When did you quit training?
00:41:29.360 --> 00:41:30.520
- After Rio.
00:41:30.600 --> 00:41:33.200
At the final training session,
00:41:33.280 --> 00:41:35.680
I was involved in an accident.
00:41:35.760 --> 00:41:36.760
- Yes?
00:41:36.840 --> 00:41:40.040
- I broke my sternum.
- Yes, I heard about that.
00:41:40.120 --> 00:41:42.320
- Damn, that hurt!
00:41:42.400 --> 00:41:45.880
And I still managed a bronze medal.
I did it!
00:41:45.960 --> 00:41:48.680
- You did well...
A beautiful ending, wasn't it?
00:41:48.760 --> 00:41:52.640
- Purely on mental strength.
00:41:55.080 --> 00:41:59.400
- Do you have appointments scheduled
with Dr. Distelmans?
00:41:59.480 --> 00:42:02.920
- Yes, probably next Monday.
00:42:03.000 --> 00:42:07.360
This time with another doctor,
who specializes in pain.
00:42:07.880 --> 00:42:12.600
An appointment with someone
I have never met.
00:42:12.680 --> 00:42:16.360
Because we keep hitting a wall.
00:42:16.440 --> 00:42:18.640
Nothing is really helping with the pain.
00:42:19.280 --> 00:42:21.560
Sometimes when it's really bad,
00:42:21.640 --> 00:42:24.200
I pray to die
00:42:24.280 --> 00:42:27.600
and sometimes I hope
that I'm going to sleep
00:42:27.680 --> 00:42:29.040
but I never have to wake up,
00:42:29.120 --> 00:42:31.920
that I don't have to make
the decision by myself.
00:42:32.000 --> 00:42:33.480
- She's changed.
00:42:33.560 --> 00:42:36.880
When she was here,
about three years ago,
00:42:36.960 --> 00:42:38.840
she was a different athlete.
00:42:38.920 --> 00:42:40.440
She was in trained,
00:42:40.520 --> 00:42:42.960
she was well-shaped, muscles.
00:42:43.040 --> 00:42:46.960
But now you see that she is changing.
00:42:47.040 --> 00:42:49.360
And she has the mind to continue,
00:42:49.440 --> 00:42:51.600
but she does not have
the force anymore.
00:42:51.680 --> 00:42:53.600
And so we must think about,
00:42:53.680 --> 00:42:55.880
she must think about how to continue,
00:42:55.960 --> 00:42:59.000
what she can do, what she will do,
what she wants to do.
00:42:59.080 --> 00:43:00.360
She is a champion,
00:43:00.440 --> 00:43:03.640
and a champion must decide
what she wants to do.
00:43:03.720 --> 00:43:06.280
(gentle music)
00:43:17.040 --> 00:43:19.640
- Zennie, Zennie!
00:43:19.880 --> 00:43:22.720
(gentle music)
00:43:22.800 --> 00:43:25.000
- [Lieve] Hey, sweetie.
- Godmother!
00:43:25.080 --> 00:43:26.520
- Are you awake?
00:43:27.680 --> 00:43:29.400
Are you awake, darling?
00:43:30.080 --> 00:43:31.080
How's it going?
00:43:31.160 --> 00:43:32.960
- I can't sleep anymore.
00:43:33.040 --> 00:43:35.440
- I can see that.
00:43:35.520 --> 00:43:37.800
Can I set this aside?
00:43:44.200 --> 00:43:45.240
Come, Marieke.
00:43:46.080 --> 00:43:48.680
- I don't feel good.
00:43:48.760 --> 00:43:50.000
- I hear that.
00:43:50.080 --> 00:43:52.000
- I'm not feeling well.
00:43:52.080 --> 00:43:54.000
- You're not feeling well?
00:43:54.080 --> 00:43:56.560
- No.
- Tell me about it.
00:43:56.640 --> 00:44:00.920
- It's my health.
00:44:01.160 --> 00:44:04.960
It keeps getting worse and worse.
00:44:05.320 --> 00:44:08.440
And the episodes are coming faster
one after the other.
00:44:08.520 --> 00:44:09.520
- Yeah.
00:44:10.160 --> 00:44:14.360
- I'm very scared all the time.
00:44:14.800 --> 00:44:18.120
- Scared that you'll be forced
to make a decision?
00:44:18.200 --> 00:44:19.960
Or what is scaring you?
00:44:22.240 --> 00:44:24.920
(Marieke groaning and choking)
00:44:25.000 --> 00:44:26.080
- Mieke.
00:44:32.360 --> 00:44:37.960
Hey, doll. What do I need to do?
Darling, tell me.
00:44:43.840 --> 00:44:45.120
(Marieke choking)
00:44:45.480 --> 00:44:49.760
Marieke has asked me to be
the last person to be around
00:44:50.240 --> 00:44:52.320
when she has made her final decision
for euthanasia.
00:44:53.000 --> 00:44:54.080
- Pain...
00:44:55.040 --> 00:44:57.640
- I promised her, so I will be there.
00:45:08.320 --> 00:45:11.000
- Do you remember what I asked of you?
00:45:11.080 --> 00:45:13.360
- I do, indeed, remember.
00:45:13.440 --> 00:45:15.880
- Would you still do it?
00:45:16.880 --> 00:45:19.480
- I am not going to break my promise.
00:45:21.600 --> 00:45:24.640
- But I cannot... I don't want to...
00:45:24.720 --> 00:45:27.120
- Marieke, I know.
00:45:27.200 --> 00:45:29.200
- I'm so stupid!
00:45:29.280 --> 00:45:31.720
- Oh whoa, whoa, whoa. Tut tut tut.
00:45:44.880 --> 00:45:46.680
(dog barking)
00:45:48.720 --> 00:45:49.720
- [Pola] Marieke!
00:45:49.800 --> 00:45:50.880
- [Marieke] Hi Pola!
00:45:51.840 --> 00:45:57.640
You know, my friend is
an arranger for funerals.
00:45:58.000 --> 00:46:02.680
And we spoke with each other two weeks ago
00:46:02.760 --> 00:46:06.280
and I already arranged
my funeral with him.
00:46:07.080 --> 00:46:10.640
In case something happened
and you never know.
00:46:10.720 --> 00:46:13.120
It's the same with you, Pola.
00:46:13.200 --> 00:46:17.440
You can also die tomorrow
because of heart problems,
00:46:17.520 --> 00:46:20.160
or a car that hits you.
00:46:21.120 --> 00:46:24.240
I already wanna arrange everything now
00:46:24.320 --> 00:46:28.440
and I told him I choose a red casket.
00:46:28.520 --> 00:46:30.400
I want a red one,
00:46:30.480 --> 00:46:34.680
and I want everybody
to drink a glass of cava
00:46:34.760 --> 00:46:36.800
and that they are not sad,
00:46:36.880 --> 00:46:41.240
but they say cheers to
the good life of Marieke.
00:46:41.320 --> 00:46:44.480
So, everything is arranged.
00:46:45.240 --> 00:46:46.480
(gentle music)
00:46:46.560 --> 00:46:49.040
(car beeping)
00:46:52.960 --> 00:46:56.120
I am in the hospital in Diest.
00:46:56.200 --> 00:47:01.120
The day before yesterday,
I had a big epileptic fit.
00:47:01.480 --> 00:47:05.520
And I hope I can go home soon.
00:47:05.640 --> 00:47:08.200
(gentle music)
00:47:15.680 --> 00:47:16.960
- Look who's here.
00:47:17.040 --> 00:47:20.000
- Hey! Daddy-boy!
00:47:21.800 --> 00:47:24.440
- Truffles from Brussels!
00:47:24.520 --> 00:47:26.280
- Oh oh oh!
00:47:26.360 --> 00:47:28.200
- Ho ho ho! Santa!
00:47:29.000 --> 00:47:31.440
- Oh! Oh!
00:47:31.520 --> 00:47:32.840
- Ho ho ho.
00:47:33.120 --> 00:47:35.760
(phone ringing)
00:47:38.520 --> 00:47:40.280
- I'm a busy woman!
00:47:40.400 --> 00:47:43.560
(indistinct chatters)
00:47:44.960 --> 00:47:47.280
- Hello, this is the Sex Line.
00:47:47.360 --> 00:47:49.800
- [Lieve] Finally, the Sex Line on the line.
00:47:49.880 --> 00:47:53.080
(Marieke chuckles)
00:47:53.960 --> 00:47:57.120
- The sex line isn't very doing very well.
00:47:57.200 --> 00:47:59.960
- No? What's wrong with it?
00:48:00.040 --> 00:48:02.520
- It's broken.
00:48:06.400 --> 00:48:07.800
- Marieke?
00:48:07.880 --> 00:48:11.640
- Godmother, I'm sorry,
I keep falling asleep.
00:48:11.720 --> 00:48:14.680
- It's OK, honey. I understand.
00:48:14.760 --> 00:48:19.200
Oh, Marieke.
I'll call back another time. Is that okay?
00:48:19.440 --> 00:48:21.280
- That's super.
00:48:21.360 --> 00:48:25.400
- Okay. Big kiss, sweetie.
And a very big hug.
00:48:25.480 --> 00:48:28.840
- I love you! Bye-bye!
00:48:29.400 --> 00:48:31.480
- [Woman] Wow, there are a lot of people here!
00:48:31.560 --> 00:48:33.280
- [Friend] Hey, Hayden!
00:48:33.360 --> 00:48:35.880
- [Woman] Oops.
- [Friend] Zennie!
00:48:35.960 --> 00:48:37.960
(all laughing)
00:48:38.040 --> 00:48:40.320
- Hayden, what's that?
00:48:40.400 --> 00:48:44.760
[Woman] We'll come back later
when there are fewer people here.
00:48:44.840 --> 00:48:48.040
(indistinct chatters)
00:48:49.040 --> 00:48:50.800
- What's all this?
00:48:50.880 --> 00:48:54.040
- See you later!
- See you later.
00:48:57.000 --> 00:48:59.920
- [Pola] Give us like half an hour.
00:49:05.120 --> 00:49:07.640
When we were on the phone
a couple of months ago,
00:49:07.720 --> 00:49:11.960
you said to me, "Pola I have
a serious question for you.
00:49:12.040 --> 00:49:13.920
Are you going to keep
filming until the end?
00:49:14.000 --> 00:49:15.840
Are you going to keep
filming until I die?"
00:49:15.920 --> 00:49:17.600
Do you remember you asked me that?
00:49:18.560 --> 00:49:19.720
- Yeah.
00:49:19.800 --> 00:49:21.680
- And I think we said,
00:49:23.200 --> 00:49:24.800
well I said to you,
00:49:26.520 --> 00:49:29.760
"Do you want me to keep
filming until that point?"
00:49:31.200 --> 00:49:35.600
- When the doctor is
doing it, that's private.
00:49:35.680 --> 00:49:41.080
But before and after, you can film it.
00:49:42.120 --> 00:49:46.040
But because it's very difficult
for my parents as well,
00:49:46.120 --> 00:49:48.320
because I asked my parents
00:49:48.840 --> 00:49:51.600
when they do the euthanasia,
00:49:53.120 --> 00:49:56.640
I want to say goodbye to you first,
00:49:56.720 --> 00:49:59.240
and then you go to another room.
00:49:59.960 --> 00:50:03.000
And then when they do it,
00:50:03.080 --> 00:50:09.920
I only want my godmother
of sports, Lieve with me
00:50:10.000 --> 00:50:13.920
and my psychologist with me.
00:50:14.600 --> 00:50:17.560
And for the rest I want nobody with me.
00:50:17.640 --> 00:50:18.480
- Yeah.
00:50:22.200 --> 00:50:24.720
(bell chiming)
00:50:36.440 --> 00:50:42.440
