FANG mixes documentary and fiction techniques to recount an African art object's journey through a century of peril and adventure, and uses the film styles of each historical period to tell its story - a whole century of Western attitudes towards African culture packed into 8 minutes.
"Highly Recommended! [A] little gem... Part of what makes FANG so clever is that with each vignette, director Susan Vogel uses a different film style and look. The effect is delightfully quirky, but never kitschy... there is nothing to dislike here. The film raises questions about authenticity, art, culture, and history, and would be useful in stimulating discussion. It would be an excellent addition to collections supporting art history, African history, or anthropology."—Educational Media Reviews Online
"A complete delight, so witty and pithy - if you blink, you may miss an important piece of art history."—Professor Suzanne MacRae, English Department, Univ. of Arkansas
"Fast, funny and provocative. The film focuses attention on the arbitrary and changing nature of the categories of 'art' in Western culture and raises important questions about the integrity of the object and the relationship between museum exhibition of objects and their value on the art market. It takes me two lectures to cover this material; this film does it in 8 minutes."—Professor Jean Borgatti, Clark University
"In a thoroughly inventive approach to its topic, this crisp black and white drama explores the ways in which African art has been appropriated through time and space."—Margaret Mead Film Festival

 00:00:29.690 --> 00:00:33.359
 Dear Dr. Locke, I\'ve agreed to

 00:00:33.360 --> 00:00:35.479
 loan the Fang to a
 traveling exhibition

 00:00:35.480 --> 00:00:36.574
 that will go to London,

 00:00:36.575 --> 00:00:38.719
 Brussels, and possibly Zurich.

 00:00:38.720 --> 00:00:40.649
 Now that your book is finished,

 00:00:40.650 --> 00:00:43.390
 I thought you wouldn\'t
 mind letting him go.

 00:01:00.770 --> 00:01:04.969
 Finally, this morning we
 captured the big idol from

 00:01:04.970 --> 00:01:08.869
 [inaudible] My Senegalese boys

 00:01:08.870 --> 00:01:11.329
 were courageous and efficient.

 00:01:11.330 --> 00:01:15.000
 The whole shrine was
 smashed in seconds.

 00:01:15.070 --> 00:01:18.349
 This new idol is quite good.

 00:01:18.350 --> 00:01:21.919
 The hair and parts of the
 body are all decorated with

 00:01:21.920 --> 00:01:24.499
 brass upholstery text that

 00:01:24.500 --> 00:01:27.514
 are considered to
 like jewelry here.

 00:01:27.515 --> 00:01:30.049
 I\'m still searching
 for clear evidence

 00:01:30.050 --> 00:01:31.279
 of cannibalism but I

 00:01:31.280 --> 00:01:34.139
 hadn\'t been able to see any.

 00:01:34.140 --> 00:01:37.900
 The natives are very canny
 and hide everything.

 00:02:20.450 --> 00:02:23.340
 I just can\'t get the arms right.

 00:02:25.360 --> 00:02:28.590
 No, it\'s the hands.

 00:02:31.930 --> 00:02:35.220
 Damn hands are all wrong.

 00:02:39.020 --> 00:02:44.290
 Straight lines, it\'s
 about straight lines.

 00:02:57.350 --> 00:03:01.280
 I\'ll never get this
 complicated African shit.

 00:03:02.690 --> 00:03:05.434
 What are you looking at?

 00:03:05.435 --> 00:03:09.050
 You stupid fetish.

 00:04:04.650 --> 00:04:09.179
 My dear [inaudible]
 my African Kinship Study

 00:04:09.180 --> 00:04:11.589
 led me to my Fang ancestry,

 00:04:11.590 --> 00:04:14.329
 which I bought because
 it spoke volumes to me

 00:04:14.330 --> 00:04:18.000
 about the basic human
 kinship that unites us all.

 00:04:21.050 --> 00:04:25.029
 The de Man Ray photograph
 my ancestor statue,

 00:04:25.030 --> 00:04:30.360
 I felt we had entered a new
 age founded on understanding.

 00:04:39.040 --> 00:04:42.529
 Now that future is fading.

 00:04:42.530 --> 00:04:46.849
 My manuscript will never
 be published here, worse,

 00:04:46.850 --> 00:04:48.349
 the authorities are
 now attempting to

 00:04:48.350 --> 00:04:51.274
 confiscate it and my African art.

 00:04:51.275 --> 00:04:54.289
 I cannot go into details
 but I have taken

 00:04:54.290 --> 00:04:57.159
 drastic action to save it
 and I will need your help.

 00:04:57.160 --> 00:04:59.229
 My dear daughter
 leaves for Zurich

 00:04:59.230 --> 00:05:02.770
 tonight and will contact
 you once she arrives.

 00:05:18.680 --> 00:05:21.269
 Dear Dr. Locke,

 00:05:21.270 --> 00:05:25.129
 I\'ve just inherited an
 unusual African sculpture

 00:05:25.130 --> 00:05:27.499
 that I\'d like to learn about.

 00:05:27.500 --> 00:05:30.079
 I\'m told you once
 studied this piece

 00:05:30.080 --> 00:05:32.869
 which is both beautiful
 and disturbing.

 00:05:32.870 --> 00:05:36.109
 I\'d be grateful for any
 information you can supply.

 00:05:36.110 --> 00:05:40.489
 Dear Dr. Locke, thank you
 for your swift reply.

 00:05:40.490 --> 00:05:42.049
 I\'ve learned a great deal from

 00:05:42.050 --> 00:05:44.029
 my visit to the art museum.

 00:05:44.030 --> 00:05:47.539
 The curator confirms
 your suspicion that I

 00:05:47.540 --> 00:05:50.689
 have only the top half of
 what was once a full figure.

 00:05:50.690 --> 00:05:53.479
 Dear Dr, Locke, today
 my search ended

 00:05:53.480 --> 00:05:54.979
 happily when I received

 00:05:54.980 --> 00:05:58.740
 the most amazing and
 ridiculous object.

 00:06:10.040 --> 00:06:13.559
 Dear Dr. Locke, my wonderful Fang

 00:06:13.560 --> 00:06:15.654
 is now a fine standing man.

 00:06:15.655 --> 00:06:19.450
 I\'m delighted to have him
 illustrate it in your book.

 00:06:20.210 --> 00:06:23.309
 A toast to our guest of honor,

 00:06:23.310 --> 00:06:26.934
 the eminent professor Alain
 Locke who demonstrates

 00:06:26.935 --> 00:06:29.529
 how Negro artistic
 creativity will

 00:06:29.530 --> 00:06:32.709
 be the solution to the
 race problem in America.

 00:06:32.710 --> 00:06:37.299
 Thank you kind hostess
 and dear friends.

 00:06:37.300 --> 00:06:39.909
 Nothing is more galvanizing

 00:06:39.910 --> 00:06:42.890
 than the sense of
 a cultural past.

 00:06:44.240 --> 00:06:46.739
 I\'ve agreed to loan the Fang to

 00:06:46.740 --> 00:06:49.109
 a traveling exhibition
 that will go to London,

 00:06:49.110 --> 00:06:51.259
 Brussels, and possibly Zurich.

 00:06:51.260 --> 00:06:53.074
 Now that your book is finished,

 00:06:53.075 --> 00:06:55.489
 I thought you wouldn\'t
 mind letting him go.

 00:06:55.490 --> 00:06:58.669
 So many people will have a
 chance to see him in Europe

 00:06:58.670 --> 00:07:02.460
 before he comes back to his
 final home in the art museum.
