On any given night, you may find yourself serenaded by a living mannequin on Sunset Blvd. A Gulf War veteran, motorcycle gang member, stockbroker, chimney sweep, inventor, musician, and brilliant performer, we had to find out what brought Mister Moonbeam from his hometown in rural Alaska to a glittering storefront window in LA's Echo Park.

00:00:10.385 --> 00:00:11.678
Talk about all of.
00:00:21.312 --> 00:00:23.481
What\'s that like inside
00:00:23.481 --> 00:00:23.565
the
00:00:23.565 --> 00:00:24.566
plane right here?
00:00:27.444 --> 00:00:29.404
There\'s nobody I\'m the only one
00:00:29.404 --> 00:00:30.196
in here.
00:00:30.196 --> 00:00:31.406
My God.
00:00:31.406 --> 00:00:32.782
I\'m playing for you guys out there.
00:00:41.875 --> 00:00:42.876
I have no.
00:01:19.245 --> 00:01:20.246
So.
00:01:21.748 --> 00:01:22.749
His mother.
00:01:40.850 --> 00:01:42.811
And she\'s
00:01:42.811 --> 00:01:43.812
an.
00:01:47.816 --> 00:01:48.817
The scenes.
00:01:52.946 --> 00:01:53.947
It\'s my.
00:02:15.844 --> 00:02:17.095
He.
00:02:21.641 --> 00:02:22.642
But.
00:02:28.189 --> 00:02:29.190
If you.
00:02:39.367 --> 00:02:40.493
I don\'t know. I try I try not to
00:02:40.493 --> 00:02:42.328
hold on too tightly to any
00:02:42.328 --> 00:02:44.247
one belief or identity because,
00:02:44.247 --> 00:02:45.540
you know, after having passed
00:02:45.540 --> 00:02:47.125
through so many of them, I don\'t
00:02:47.125 --> 00:02:49.085
really, you know,
00:02:49.085 --> 00:02:50.587
I don\'t really expect that any any
00:02:50.587 --> 00:02:51.462
of them are going to stick.
00:02:51.462 --> 00:02:53.214
So I get too excited about it.
00:02:55.758 --> 00:02:56.384
Will you
00:02:56.384 --> 00:02:57.760
tell me your name
00:02:57.760 --> 00:02:58.761
and
00:02:59.804 --> 00:03:00.930
tell me about the origins
00:03:00.930 --> 00:03:03.099
of yourself as a person?
00:03:03.099 --> 00:03:04.350
Well, the name part\'s easy.
00:03:04.350 --> 00:03:06.603
That\'d be Martin\'s got building.
00:03:06.603 --> 00:03:07.645
Where did I come from
00:03:09.189 --> 00:03:10.231
born?
00:03:10.231 --> 00:03:12.901
International Falls, Minnesota,
00:03:12.901 --> 00:03:14.485
a small lumber town on the Canadian
00:03:14.485 --> 00:03:16.362
American border right across
00:03:16.362 --> 00:03:17.488
the river from Canada.
00:03:18.573 --> 00:03:20.575
After that, rural Alaska.
00:03:21.910 --> 00:03:24.078
The man had no idea
00:03:24.078 --> 00:03:25.455
at 18 what I want to do with my
00:03:25.455 --> 00:03:27.332
life, so I joined the
00:03:27.332 --> 00:03:29.125
Navy about two years after I joined
00:03:29.125 --> 00:03:30.752
the Gulf War broke out.
00:03:30.752 --> 00:03:32.045
And so all of a sudden we were
00:03:32.045 --> 00:03:33.546
headed over to the Persian Gulf and
00:03:33.546 --> 00:03:34.797
this was all, you know, a big
00:03:34.797 --> 00:03:36.716
surprise to myself
00:03:36.716 --> 00:03:37.926
and everybody else around me.
00:03:40.887 --> 00:03:42.180
They\'re probably around the world
00:03:42.180 --> 00:03:44.182
and spit me out in San Diego
00:03:44.182 --> 00:03:46.643
at the time I met
00:03:46.643 --> 00:03:48.353
one of a couple of people in my life
00:03:48.353 --> 00:03:49.854
that had a really profound influence
00:03:49.854 --> 00:03:52.190
on me. His name was how he
00:03:52.190 --> 00:03:53.858
joined his motorcycle gang about the
00:03:53.858 --> 00:03:54.817
time I was getting out of the
00:03:54.817 --> 00:03:56.778
military lasted
00:03:56.778 --> 00:03:58.655
a good year, year and a
00:03:58.655 --> 00:04:00.281
half or so.
00:04:00.281 --> 00:04:02.158
And then I went
00:04:02.158 --> 00:04:04.035
from for a number of reasons,
00:04:04.035 --> 00:04:06.454
sold my my Harley Davidson and
00:04:06.454 --> 00:04:08.289
some more suits in an hour seven and
00:04:08.289 --> 00:04:10.583
decided to become a stockbroker.
00:04:10.583 --> 00:04:12.126
While into that, it started to
00:04:12.126 --> 00:04:12.919
really dawn on me.
00:04:12.919 --> 00:04:15.004
What what a soul
00:04:15.004 --> 00:04:16.839
might be just due to
00:04:16.839 --> 00:04:18.341
its absence.
00:04:19.842 --> 00:04:21.844
So I got a job as a chimney sweep.
00:04:32.313 --> 00:04:33.356
I wouldn\'t be in this window there
00:04:33.356 --> 00:04:34.607
it for that guy. Oh, wow.
00:04:34.607 --> 00:04:36.192
Yeah, he had a profound influence on
00:04:36.192 --> 00:04:38.027
him. He\'s the guy that basically
00:04:38.027 --> 00:04:39.529
saw me playing in Oregon with a
00:04:39.529 --> 00:04:41.781
spare thought that was interesting,
00:04:41.781 --> 00:04:43.408
asked me to score a silent film that
00:04:43.408 --> 00:04:45.159
he had done and then started playing
00:04:45.159 --> 00:04:47.078
music with me and and jointly,
00:04:47.078 --> 00:04:48.830
we kind of learn to play music.
00:04:50.623 --> 00:04:52.292
Ron, do you want to be on camera?
00:04:52.292 --> 00:04:54.210
But meaning Marty was
00:04:54.210 --> 00:04:54.794
like meeting
00:04:54.836 --> 00:04:56.838
a person who had complete freedom?
00:04:56.838 --> 00:04:57.922
Yeah.
00:04:57.922 --> 00:05:00.258
Over the years, I think we\'ve both
00:05:00.258 --> 00:05:01.509
gone in those roles, right?
00:05:01.509 --> 00:05:03.011
It\'s like Marty is gone.
00:05:03.011 --> 00:05:04.762
Complete Freedom Road and I have
00:05:04.762 --> 00:05:06.931
gone more of a
00:05:06.931 --> 00:05:08.725
controlled ride.
00:05:08.725 --> 00:05:10.518
I remember having conversations with
00:05:10.518 --> 00:05:12.395
Ron about, you know, what am I going
00:05:12.395 --> 00:05:14.105
to do with my life now that now that
00:05:14.105 --> 00:05:15.565
I\'m not a chimney sweep anymore?
00:05:15.565 --> 00:05:17.483
He astutely pointed
00:05:17.483 --> 00:05:19.610
out that I was making weird things
00:05:19.610 --> 00:05:21.279
and people would be interested in
00:05:21.279 --> 00:05:23.531
it, and that it\'s possible
00:05:23.531 --> 00:05:24.824
to just rent a store and start
00:05:24.866 --> 00:05:25.658
selling it.
00:05:25.658 --> 00:05:26.117
He was from
00:05:26.117 --> 00:05:27.118
a.
00:05:27.118 --> 00:05:28.328
He didn\'t really understand.
00:05:30.872 --> 00:05:32.415
Do certain things
00:05:32.415 --> 00:05:34.167
that people with you.
00:05:34.167 --> 00:05:36.085
The interesting, you know, I fell
00:05:36.085 --> 00:05:37.670
in love with light, I think as much
00:05:37.670 --> 00:05:39.547
as anything, and so I built
00:05:39.547 --> 00:05:41.674
and sold lamps, a majority
00:05:41.674 --> 00:05:44.010
of them were probably going into
00:05:44.010 --> 00:05:46.095
commercial spaces such as
00:05:46.095 --> 00:05:49.098
cafes, restaurants, nightclubs.
00:05:49.098 --> 00:05:51.100
Towards the end, it was
00:05:51.100 --> 00:05:53.978
starting to become more successful.
00:05:53.978 --> 00:05:55.938
He\'s a simple person who
00:05:55.938 --> 00:05:58.066
has a really deep, anything
00:05:58.066 --> 00:05:59.901
strange vision and is
00:05:59.901 --> 00:06:01.736
able to
00:06:01.736 --> 00:06:03.571
push towards that constantly
00:06:03.571 --> 00:06:05.823
without being encumbered by life
00:06:05.823 --> 00:06:07.784
and responsibility,
00:06:07.784 --> 00:06:09.994
whereas we all have mortgages.
00:06:09.994 --> 00:06:11.829
You know, he doesn\'t have
00:06:11.829 --> 00:06:13.623
that. So he\'s able to push towards
00:06:13.623 --> 00:06:15.875
that. And I think that\'s what it\'s
00:06:15.875 --> 00:06:17.960
his naivete that what
00:06:17.960 --> 00:06:19.796
makes him appealing because we
00:06:19.796 --> 00:06:21.506
all really want to not have any
00:06:21.506 --> 00:06:22.757
responsibility, right?
00:06:22.757 --> 00:06:23.800
At some point.
00:06:23.800 --> 00:06:24.926
Yeah, yeah.
00:06:24.926 --> 00:06:26.010
Although there\'s some exterior.
00:06:27.678 --> 00:06:30.306
For me, but not for him.
00:06:30.306 --> 00:06:31.974
You know, I think what terrifies him
00:06:31.974 --> 00:06:34.018
is sedentary,
00:06:34.018 --> 00:06:36.354
you know, being sedentary.
00:06:36.354 --> 00:06:37.355
Ultimately,
00:06:38.356 --> 00:06:40.525
I wanted less time
00:06:40.525 --> 00:06:42.485
spent doing what was essentially
00:06:42.485 --> 00:06:44.654
making silly things for rich people,
00:06:44.654 --> 00:06:46.489
less people, more trees,
00:06:46.489 --> 00:06:47.865
access to nature.
00:06:47.865 --> 00:06:49.992
He\'s looking at a globe and notice
00:06:49.992 --> 00:06:51.869
all the green and ridges right
00:06:51.869 --> 00:06:53.121
in the top of California.
00:06:53.121 --> 00:06:54.997
It\'s like, Well, hmm,
00:06:54.997 --> 00:06:57.375
look at that. I mean, right there.
00:06:57.375 --> 00:06:59.252
So I did a little research
00:06:59.252 --> 00:07:01.295
online saw some pictures of a cute
00:07:01.295 --> 00:07:03.464
Victorian village called Eureka.
00:07:03.506 --> 00:07:06.008
And two months later,
00:07:06.008 --> 00:07:08.302
I just rented a U-Haul
00:07:08.302 --> 00:07:10.596
and brought home all my possessions
00:07:11.597 --> 00:07:12.640
and just moved up there.
00:07:12.640 --> 00:07:14.600
Sight unseen and started a life.
00:07:40.543 --> 00:07:41.544
A.
00:07:45.339 --> 00:07:46.466
Almost.
00:07:53.306 --> 00:07:55.183
Quit my job and then started
00:07:55.183 --> 00:07:56.767
this period of introspection, which
00:07:56.767 --> 00:07:58.436
ended up lasting a number of years
00:07:58.436 --> 00:08:00.271
and took some
00:08:00.271 --> 00:08:02.440
pretty bizarre turns.
00:08:02.440 --> 00:08:03.441
Jones.
00:08:23.377 --> 00:08:24.378
And.
00:08:33.387 --> 00:08:34.388
And.
00:08:57.745 --> 00:08:59.497
I think that Marty is the truest
00:08:59.497 --> 00:09:01.415
person I have ever and
00:09:01.415 --> 00:09:03.459
most everybody that I have ever met,
00:09:03.459 --> 00:09:05.461
I think they think he is the truest
00:09:05.461 --> 00:09:07.296
person if he\'s talking
00:09:07.296 --> 00:09:09.131
to a child or
00:09:09.131 --> 00:09:11.175
an 80 year old person or me
00:09:11.175 --> 00:09:12.134
or whatever.
00:09:12.134 --> 00:09:14.053
He just doesn\'t suffer any bullshit.
00:09:14.053 --> 00:09:16.722
You know, there\'s not any
00:09:16.722 --> 00:09:19.058
pretense and artificiality.
00:09:19.058 --> 00:09:20.309
I\'ve never really looked back.
00:09:20.309 --> 00:09:22.228
I mean, I mean,
00:09:22.228 --> 00:09:24.480
I followed what I was interested
00:09:24.480 --> 00:09:26.857
in, and that\'s always somehow,
00:09:26.857 --> 00:09:28.276
either directly or indirectly,
00:09:28.276 --> 00:09:29.610
certainly certainly well.
00:09:52.842 --> 00:09:54.969
He said a lot
00:09:54.969 --> 00:09:56.220
of moving trains.
00:10:04.312 --> 00:10:06.522
It\'s better to be blown.
00:10:11.277 --> 00:10:12.987
Too scared to speak.
00:10:26.584 --> 00:10:28.586
Scientists freight train.
00:10:29.795 --> 00:10:31.339
I have two say.
00:10:33.841 --> 00:10:34.842
And the bits.
00:10:36.886 --> 00:10:38.596
And the reason I don\'t
00:10:38.596 --> 00:10:40.306
think they saw what happened.
