The Space Lady, aka Susan Dietrich Schneider, became a staple of the Bay Area outsider music scene through years of busking the streets out of necessity. Her ethereal, echo-laden arrangements have won her a new generation of starry-eyed admirers via her recent “greatest hits” compilation. Far Off Sounds hangs out in LA with Susan for a few days, filming performances on the street, onstage, and in the mountains, as we find out what circumstances brought Susan to live such a unique life.

00:00:10.552 --> 00:00:12.846
Oh, I
00:00:12.846 --> 00:00:13.179
guess it would
00:00:13.179 --> 00:00:14.180
be like
00:00:15.473 --> 00:00:16.474
Jimmy.
00:00:28.653 --> 00:00:30.155
Raised, raised
00:00:32.490 --> 00:00:34.576
and exclude
00:00:34.576 --> 00:00:36.077
speakers like
00:00:38.038 --> 00:00:39.831
we were
00:00:39.831 --> 00:00:40.832
born to be.
00:00:49.257 --> 00:00:50.300
You are.
00:00:54.304 --> 00:00:55.305
How?
00:01:01.478 --> 00:01:03.229
So my name is Susan Dietrich
00:01:03.229 --> 00:01:05.023
Schneider, otherwise known as the
00:01:05.023 --> 00:01:06.024
space lady,
00:01:06.941 --> 00:01:08.860
and I\'m here in Angeles
00:01:08.860 --> 00:01:11.196
National Forest
00:01:11.196 --> 00:01:11.362
with
00:01:11.362 --> 00:01:13.156
Jacob and Nick.
00:01:13.156 --> 00:01:15.241
And far off sounds, and I\'m
00:01:15.241 --> 00:01:17.744
just pleased and honored to be here
00:01:17.744 --> 00:01:18.036
with
00:01:18.036 --> 00:01:19.162
you and with your.
00:01:23.041 --> 00:01:25.293
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh,
00:01:25.293 --> 00:01:26.336
ooh, ooh, ooh.
00:01:37.639 --> 00:01:39.390
John was a force of nature.
00:01:39.390 --> 00:01:41.101
That\'s the only way I can describe
00:01:41.101 --> 00:01:43.645
him. He was magnanimous,
00:01:43.645 --> 00:01:45.480
a big guy with a big heart
00:01:45.480 --> 00:01:47.357
and a huge intellect,
00:01:47.357 --> 00:01:48.191
a pin.
00:01:48.191 --> 00:01:50.318
He had tried
00:01:50.318 --> 00:01:52.362
to apply for conscientious
00:01:52.362 --> 00:01:54.280
objector status during
00:01:54.280 --> 00:01:56.866
the Vietnam War in the draft,
00:01:56.866 --> 00:01:58.785
and he was denied.
00:01:58.785 --> 00:02:00.787
So he
00:02:00.787 --> 00:02:03.164
had, as he saw no alternative
00:02:03.164 --> 00:02:05.416
but to either go to Canada
00:02:05.416 --> 00:02:07.335
or just live really low key
00:02:07.335 --> 00:02:08.711
underground, so to speak.
00:02:08.711 --> 00:02:10.713
In the U.S., he was very,
00:02:10.713 --> 00:02:11.673
very frightening.
00:02:11.673 --> 00:02:13.550
You couldn\'t countenance
00:02:13.550 --> 00:02:15.385
the idea of going to a
00:02:15.385 --> 00:02:17.262
small country on the other side of
00:02:17.262 --> 00:02:19.013
the Earth and shoot people,
00:02:19.013 --> 00:02:21.099
peasants. If you had nothing
00:02:21.141 --> 00:02:23.017
against him, nothing but loved
00:02:23.017 --> 00:02:24.853
people. We ended up living like
00:02:24.853 --> 00:02:27.230
refugees in our own country.
00:02:27.230 --> 00:02:29.232
SpaceX Lady evolved
00:02:29.232 --> 00:02:31.192
out after a
00:02:31.192 --> 00:02:33.069
long stint of hand
00:02:33.111 --> 00:02:34.070
to mouth
00:02:35.029 --> 00:02:37.782
subsistence living in Boston.
00:02:37.782 --> 00:02:39.617
I kept looking up at seagulls and
00:02:39.617 --> 00:02:41.494
seeing how effortlessly they flew.
00:02:42.662 --> 00:02:45.165
I realized I can\'t
00:02:45.165 --> 00:02:47.125
continue this.
00:02:47.125 --> 00:02:48.918
I can\'t continue this way of life
00:02:48.918 --> 00:02:51.796
and be responsible for my daughter.
00:02:51.796 --> 00:02:53.715
And so the gears started turning and
00:02:53.715 --> 00:02:55.717
I started watching seagulls
00:02:55.717 --> 00:02:56.551
up in the sky.
00:02:56.551 --> 00:02:57.427
How do they do it?
00:02:57.427 --> 00:03:00.013
They just so effortlessly
00:03:00.013 --> 00:03:02.265
sustain their light, lively
00:03:02.265 --> 00:03:04.976
their their existence,
00:03:04.976 --> 00:03:06.936
and so they became kind of a
00:03:06.936 --> 00:03:08.021
focal point for me.
00:03:09.522 --> 00:03:11.316
I just had the understanding that if
00:03:11.316 --> 00:03:13.443
you are in tune with nature, nature
00:03:13.443 --> 00:03:14.861
will take care of you.
00:03:14.861 --> 00:03:17.322
Mother Earth does care about us,
00:03:17.322 --> 00:03:19.490
and she cared about those seagulls,
00:03:20.867 --> 00:03:23.244
and I just had that as a constant
00:03:23.244 --> 00:03:25.205
image, like my totem
00:03:25.205 --> 00:03:26.956
was the seagull.
00:03:26.956 --> 00:03:28.208
You guys are awesome.
00:03:28.208 --> 00:03:29.709
We\'re so excited.
00:03:29.751 --> 00:03:31.127
We\'re so excited that this peace
00:03:31.127 --> 00:03:32.337
lady is here.
00:03:32.337 --> 00:03:33.338
Yeah,
00:03:35.548 --> 00:03:36.549
good.
00:03:37.091 --> 00:03:38.927
How do you feel?
00:03:38.927 --> 00:03:41.304
We would like to bring out
00:03:41.304 --> 00:03:43.848
Eric Sander, the space
00:03:43.848 --> 00:03:44.933
manager
00:03:46.100 --> 00:03:46.851
here.
00:03:46.851 --> 00:03:48.728
Say one thing
00:03:48.728 --> 00:03:49.729
you do to.
00:03:54.692 --> 00:03:56.903
Ladies and gentlemen,
00:03:56.903 --> 00:03:58.821
having just recently completed her
00:03:58.821 --> 00:04:01.074
first world tour
00:04:01.074 --> 00:04:02.992
and embarking on her Second World
00:04:02.992 --> 00:04:04.911
tour, starting here,
00:04:04.911 --> 00:04:05.912
it\'s in a family.
00:04:12.585 --> 00:04:14.420
Please welcome the
00:04:14.420 --> 00:04:17.715
extraordinary, unique
00:04:17.715 --> 00:04:19.300
space, lady.
00:04:26.933 --> 00:04:27.934
Hey.
00:04:30.353 --> 00:04:31.354
Governor.
00:04:31.980 --> 00:04:33.815
And you see.
00:04:36.359 --> 00:04:38.695
Your eyes are sound stunned.
00:04:38.695 --> 00:04:39.904
Your line is.
00:04:42.115 --> 00:04:43.700
See you shine.
00:04:43.700 --> 00:04:44.575
Read more.
00:04:44.575 --> 00:04:46.411
Warning on
00:04:46.411 --> 00:04:48.246
how to
00:04:50.498 --> 00:04:53.710
control drivers in your country.
00:04:53.710 --> 00:04:55.753
And we are so
00:04:55.753 --> 00:04:56.754
sorry
00:04:58.298 --> 00:05:00.300
to synthesize
00:05:00.341 --> 00:05:02.093
all your
00:05:02.093 --> 00:05:05.096
hypnotize me or,
00:05:05.096 --> 00:05:06.097
you
00:05:07.265 --> 00:05:09.809
know, I don\'t know Chinese-Made,
00:05:09.809 --> 00:05:12.395
how long synthesize
00:05:12.395 --> 00:05:14.522
me or
00:05:14.522 --> 00:05:15.857
hypnotize my
00:05:15.857 --> 00:05:18.151
or now your
00:05:18.151 --> 00:05:19.152
eyes.
00:05:19.694 --> 00:05:21.779
Or, you know
00:05:21.779 --> 00:05:23.906
or know,
00:05:24.949 --> 00:05:25.992
so after
00:05:27.201 --> 00:05:30.121
30 years of marriage to Joel
00:05:30.121 --> 00:05:33.082
and 20 years of street
00:05:33.082 --> 00:05:34.042
music.
00:05:34.042 --> 00:05:35.043
I decided
00:05:36.002 --> 00:05:37.754
it was time to move on.
00:05:37.754 --> 00:05:39.630
And I packed up the
00:05:39.630 --> 00:05:41.883
space. Lady retired her.
00:05:41.883 --> 00:05:44.260
I left California and left at all.
00:05:44.260 --> 00:05:45.511
When we were first getting to know
00:05:45.511 --> 00:05:47.347
each other, she probably mentioned
00:05:47.347 --> 00:05:49.098
that she had been a street musician.
00:05:49.098 --> 00:05:50.516
I knew she could sing, and she
00:05:50.516 --> 00:05:52.560
played a few instruments flute,
00:05:52.560 --> 00:05:53.936
accordion.
00:05:53.936 --> 00:05:55.646
I\'m not even sure I knew she played
00:05:55.646 --> 00:05:56.814
the keyboard, but I knew she played
00:05:56.814 --> 00:05:57.815
piano.
00:05:57.815 --> 00:05:58.858
So a couple of years into our
00:05:58.858 --> 00:06:00.902
marriage, I started noticing
00:06:00.902 --> 00:06:02.195
she keeps getting these emails from
00:06:02.195 --> 00:06:03.321
all over the world.
00:06:03.321 --> 00:06:05.365
Whatever happened to the space lady,
00:06:05.365 --> 00:06:06.157
where can we hear you?
00:06:06.157 --> 00:06:07.283
Are you still playing?
00:06:07.283 --> 00:06:08.618
She told me a little bit about it,
00:06:09.702 --> 00:06:11.371
about her history on the street and.
00:06:12.372 --> 00:06:14.207
So she played at
00:06:14.207 --> 00:06:15.792
my mouth, dropped open, literally.
00:06:16.918 --> 00:06:18.711
I said this is insane.
00:06:18.711 --> 00:06:19.879
That\'s amazing.
00:06:19.879 --> 00:06:21.881
You have to come out of retirement.
00:06:21.881 --> 00:06:23.341
She said I\'m really afraid and
00:06:23.341 --> 00:06:24.467
really scared.
00:06:24.467 --> 00:06:26.052
He said, I got it.
00:06:26.052 --> 00:06:27.470
I\'ll be your manager.
00:06:27.470 --> 00:06:28.763
That\'s when I told her, sit down in
00:06:28.763 --> 00:06:30.723
front of your computer how many fans
00:06:30.723 --> 00:06:32.183
you have in your Hotmail address.
00:06:32.183 --> 00:06:34.060
But she said about a thousand.
00:06:34.060 --> 00:06:35.144
I said good, seen them all in
00:06:35.144 --> 00:06:36.437
e-mail. The space ladies that
00:06:38.773 --> 00:06:39.524
I know
00:06:39.524 --> 00:06:40.900
that the good.
00:06:51.911 --> 00:06:53.079
Well, I
00:06:54.539 --> 00:06:56.249
am very.
00:07:03.339 --> 00:07:04.340
Now.
00:07:05.216 --> 00:07:06.217
I have.
00:07:14.058 --> 00:07:15.226
The percentage
00:07:16.227 --> 00:07:18.187
is too high priced
00:07:18.187 --> 00:07:20.523
to to you\'re leaving me all
00:07:20.523 --> 00:07:21.566
your money on
00:07:22.733 --> 00:07:23.734
and
00:07:24.694 --> 00:07:26.821
just born on your own
00:07:26.821 --> 00:07:27.822
from the wrong
00:07:28.823 --> 00:07:31.200
on your dreams, you are
00:07:31.200 --> 00:07:33.995
hunted down or just red.
00:07:33.995 --> 00:07:35.288
She\'s not just trying to show off
00:07:35.288 --> 00:07:37.206
her talent or show people
00:07:37.206 --> 00:07:38.207
how lavish she is.
00:07:39.167 --> 00:07:40.960
She\'s really trying to communicate,
00:07:40.960 --> 00:07:41.586
saying
00:07:41.586 --> 00:07:42.795
You can never say for sure what
00:07:42.795 --> 00:07:44.046
makes somebody successful, but I
00:07:44.046 --> 00:07:44.505
think those
00:07:44.505 --> 00:07:46.632
things are big deals
00:07:46.632 --> 00:07:48.050
for the audience, and they love
00:07:49.302 --> 00:07:50.261
her.
