In parts of the Amazon, protecting your ancestral land from illegal loggers, and oil and gold prospectors, can be a death sentence. Shady businesses from far away, not content with destroying the environment and stealing the resources of indigenous communities, are now engaged in violence and intimidation. We meet with the environmental heroes, who are threatened daily, and those who will do anything to get their hands on these resources – including a hit man who has murdered over 20 activists.
Series Description
A series of interviewes in which journalists Sonia López and Noemí Redondo visit different places in Latin America where survival is not equally assured for all human beings. At the Gates of Hell explores some of the deadliest parts of the world where escaping abuse, exploitation, extortion, and even death is a daily battle. This series takes us deep into hidden worlds in Colombia, Mexico, Peru and Brazil.

WEBVTT
00:00:04.000 --> 00:00:09.200
Sometimes we ask ourselves:
Is the white man intelligent?
00:00:10.240 --> 00:00:11.960
What does he use
his intelligence for?
00:00:12.000 --> 00:00:13.920
To destroy the Amazon?
00:00:16.000 --> 00:00:18.960
THE AMAZON IS TWICE THE SIZE
OF SPAIN AND EVERY MINUTE...
00:00:19.000 --> 00:00:21.960
...LOSES THE EQUIVALENT
OF FIVE FOOTBALL FIELDS.
00:00:23.520 --> 00:00:25.680
I am for hydroelectric plants.
00:00:26.960 --> 00:00:29.960
Taking into account
the investment and the profit,...
00:00:30.800 --> 00:00:33.960
...the environmental damage
is not so important.
00:00:36.320 --> 00:00:39.560
IN THE LAST 2 YEARS,
132 ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVISTS...
00:00:39.600 --> 00:00:42.440
...HAVE BEEN MURDERED
IN THE BRAZILIAN AMAZON
00:00:47.240 --> 00:00:51.240
They didn\'t manage to shoot me in
my head, they did something worse.
00:00:56.680 --> 00:01:01.920
AT THE GATES OF HELL
00:01:24.000 --> 00:01:26.880
A sanctuary rich
in natural resources...
00:01:26.920 --> 00:01:30.680
...that has become an object
of desire over the centuries.
00:01:31.320 --> 00:01:33.960
For decades,
the Brazilian rainforest...
00:01:34.000 --> 00:01:38.200
...has been deforested, damaged,
and riddled with buildings...
00:01:38.360 --> 00:01:41.360
...in the name of economic
growth and progress.
00:01:43.000 --> 00:01:46.200
When conservation is not
a priority for the Government,...
00:01:46.240 --> 00:01:50.640
...the threat of logging, mining,
and agribusiness increases.
00:01:55.040 --> 00:01:57.000
The economic interests...
00:01:57.040 --> 00:01:59.120
...of authorities
that protect the Amazon...
00:01:59.160 --> 00:02:01.960
...coincide with those
who plunder it,...
00:02:02.000 --> 00:02:05.560
...indigenous peoples
and activists risk their lives...
00:02:05.840 --> 00:02:09.640
...to defend a land that languishes
at the gates of hell.
00:02:10.080 --> 00:02:13.240
THREATENED
BRAZILIAN AMAZON
00:02:41.840 --> 00:02:45.200
OSVALINDA ALVES
ECO-FARMER
00:02:45.800 --> 00:02:47.760
I\'ve been threatened since 2012...
00:02:47.800 --> 00:02:51.720
...for defending the rights
of farmers and women here...
00:02:54.000 --> 00:02:57.000
...and for working
in an agroforestry system...
00:02:57.040 --> 00:03:01.040
...with no agronomic or fire.
00:03:02.000 --> 00:03:06.400
That\'s why, landowners and loggers
think that we hurt their work.
00:03:07.640 --> 00:03:10.920
They say that we are a bad example
for them in here...
00:03:11.000 --> 00:03:13.960
...because we\'ll change
the mentality of the people.
00:03:14.480 --> 00:03:16.360
You are dangerous.
-Yes.
00:03:16.520 --> 00:03:22.200
If a farmer recovers their land,
they stop selling the land...
00:03:22.240 --> 00:03:26.480
...so that a large landowner
can plant crop for livestock.
00:03:26.520 --> 00:03:30.960
If farmers work for loggers or
landowners, they give up the land.
00:03:31.000 --> 00:03:35.680
In fact, almost all farmers
have sold their land to landowners.
00:03:35.720 --> 00:03:36.960
Very cheap, too.
00:03:37.000 --> 00:03:38.880
Good cheap to work for them.
00:03:38.920 --> 00:03:42.600
Some people do not want
your knowledge to be shared.
00:03:43.320 --> 00:03:46.960
If you sell 1,000 kilos of pulp
at ten reais, how much do you get?
00:03:47.320 --> 00:03:48.320
10,000.
00:03:49.000 --> 00:03:53.320
That, only in one harvest,
without destroying a hectare.
00:03:54.280 --> 00:03:58.880
In one hectare you can only
raise two cows, only two cows.
00:03:59.600 --> 00:04:02.600
If those cows, within a year,
give me two calves,...
00:04:02.640 --> 00:04:06.600
...I\'ll have to wait other three
years to sell them at 2,000 reais.
00:04:09.000 --> 00:04:11.720
How much will I get
if I plant pasture?
00:04:14.000 --> 00:04:16.800
That\'s the calculation
I make to farmers.
00:04:17.560 --> 00:04:20.560
Do not sow grass, plant trees.
00:04:21.600 --> 00:04:24.640
Plant fruit trees
that will give you more benefits.
00:04:25.000 --> 00:04:29.240
Don\'t sow grass, as with two cows
you won\'t support your children.
00:04:29.280 --> 00:04:35.160
You, here, live in an independent
and self-sufficient way.
00:04:35.320 --> 00:04:36.960
My food comes from here:
00:04:37.800 --> 00:04:42.240
rice, beans, corn, yam, potatoes...
00:04:42.280 --> 00:04:44.240
All the vegetables are from here.
00:04:44.280 --> 00:04:48.200
Everyone keeps their family
with the system we implanted.
00:04:48.400 --> 00:04:50.320
There is no need to deforest.
00:04:51.680 --> 00:04:55.160
So, when you tell this
to people,...
00:04:56.000 --> 00:04:59.440
...they call you crazy,
environmentalist...
00:04:59.800 --> 00:05:03.200
...and many times I\'ve been told
I have nothing to do,...
00:05:04.000 --> 00:05:06.800
...that I have to die
as Dorothy Stang died.
00:05:07.000 --> 00:05:08.160
How did she die?
00:05:08.560 --> 00:05:11.120
They shot her to death.
00:05:14.000 --> 00:05:17.400
Those who threaten me
are the loggers and landowners.
00:05:17.440 --> 00:05:19.840
They put a price on your head?
-Yes.
00:05:19.880 --> 00:05:23.040
30 loggers and landowners,
at 3,000 reais each.
00:05:24.960 --> 00:05:25.960
90,000 reais.
00:05:26.000 --> 00:05:27.280
Yes.
00:05:27.320 --> 00:05:31.600
People have come to threaten you
in your own living room.
00:05:31.920 --> 00:05:34.960
They were 12. They all came armed.
00:05:35.000 --> 00:05:39.520
They told me they brought money,
they wanted to do business with me.
00:05:39.560 --> 00:05:42.960
I told them I was not going
to accept their money.
00:05:43.000 --> 00:05:45.480
I went to the kitchen,
and made juice.
00:05:45.520 --> 00:05:47.960
I put it on the table
and I served it.
00:05:48.880 --> 00:05:49.880
They drank it.
00:05:52.000 --> 00:05:54.760
\"If you want to kill me,
kill me now.\"...
00:05:54.800 --> 00:05:56.960
...It was what I told him.
00:05:57.000 --> 00:05:59.800
I do not know how I dared.
00:06:00.000 --> 00:06:02.720
He turned around,
looked at me and said:
00:06:03.840 --> 00:06:07.640
I\'ll come back tomorrow with more
money and we\'ll reach an agreement.
00:06:08.440 --> 00:06:09.440
I said:
00:06:09.480 --> 00:06:15.440
\"Don\'t bother, as soon as you
leave, I\'m going to denounce you\".
00:06:16.480 --> 00:06:19.440
The truth is I had
never denounced them before.
00:06:20.440 --> 00:06:22.840
But from the moment
they entered my house,...
00:06:24.080 --> 00:06:27.240
...they put pressure on my husband
and my friends,...
00:06:27.280 --> 00:06:30.200
...that\'s when I got angry
and said \"enough\".
00:06:30.840 --> 00:06:34.680
The Federal Police told me the only
solution was to disclose,...
00:06:36.360 --> 00:06:38.400
...because they couldn\'t
protect me.
00:06:38.440 --> 00:06:41.760
Did the police say
they would not do anything...
00:06:41.800 --> 00:06:44.960
...and that the only solution
was to talk to the media?
00:06:45.000 --> 00:06:47.400
It was the only solution
they found.
00:06:47.960 --> 00:06:50.520
How many times
have you escaped death?
00:06:50.560 --> 00:06:54.640
Many, girl. Many. Many times...
00:06:57.000 --> 00:06:58.600
When I think about it...
00:06:59.000 --> 00:07:00.200
It\'s very sad.
00:07:03.240 --> 00:07:04.240
Many times.
00:07:08.000 --> 00:07:12.840
Sometimes we get across them
on the road and they stop the car.
00:07:13.960 --> 00:07:15.880
A gunslinger shows his weapon,...
00:07:15.920 --> 00:07:20.920
...no one can help you,
there is just jungle.
00:07:21.000 --> 00:07:25.360
When the loggers and landowners
saw that they could not kill you...
00:07:25.720 --> 00:07:29.200
...because you had told what
was happening to the media,...
00:07:30.000 --> 00:07:33.720
...did they try other tactics
to intimidate you?
00:07:33.760 --> 00:07:36.080
They acted within
the Ministry of Health.
00:07:37.000 --> 00:07:41.440
I was in treatment in Belem
to have heart surgery.
00:07:42.840 --> 00:07:48.840
When I got there, the landowner\'s
daughter said I wasn\'t a priority.
00:07:50.000 --> 00:07:54.240
I gave her the documents and told
her that my surgery was urgent...
00:07:54.280 --> 00:07:57.960
...because my surgery term
was 10 years and it had been 11.
00:07:58.880 --> 00:08:03.120
The metal valve that I have
in my heart had already stopped...
00:08:03.840 --> 00:08:06.120
...and only part
of my heart worked.
00:08:07.000 --> 00:08:10.800
I could not even walk anymore.
But I was not a priority.
00:08:12.000 --> 00:08:17.440
If I had any chance of living
10 more years, it\'s over.
00:08:18.000 --> 00:08:19.640
I do not have it anymore.
00:08:23.000 --> 00:08:27.400
They did not manage to shoot me in
the head, they did something worse.
00:08:29.520 --> 00:08:30.800
They finished with my life.
00:08:32.000 --> 00:08:33.800
They finished with my life.
00:08:38.000 --> 00:08:41.480
These four years I have left are
going to be years of struggle.
00:08:45.000 --> 00:08:50.880
I\'m going to get back the lands
they have taken from farmers.
00:08:57.000 --> 00:08:59.960
My struggle is not for death,
it is for life.
00:09:00.000 --> 00:09:01.000
Not for my life,...
00:09:01.040 --> 00:09:06.760
...but for the life of my
grandchildren, who will live here.
00:09:06.800 --> 00:09:08.440
Every day I plant a seed.
00:09:10.800 --> 00:09:15.200
If I have four years to plant,
and every year has 365 days,...
00:09:16.000 --> 00:09:17.800
...there will be many trees.
00:09:18.000 --> 00:09:23.240
You can be sure that I will
replant this whole area.
00:09:24.760 --> 00:09:26.000
My life is in here.
00:09:29.720 --> 00:09:32.280
ITAITUBA, BRAZIL
00:09:35.000 --> 00:09:39.000
Brazil received billions
from Europe...
00:09:39.080 --> 00:09:40.960
...and international
organizations...
00:09:41.000 --> 00:09:44.000
...to help preserve
its most precious treasure.
00:09:45.840 --> 00:09:48.680
More than one million
square kilometres...
00:09:49.080 --> 00:09:53.400
...divided in conservation units
currently endangered.
00:09:54.000 --> 00:09:56.960
There is lower governmental
budget and protection.
00:09:57.760 --> 00:10:03.160
This action will boost illegal
deforestation and land occupations.
00:10:04.000 --> 00:10:06.520
ICMBIO is named
after Chico Mendes,...
00:10:06.560 --> 00:10:09.680
...an activist
who was murdered in the 80s...
00:10:09.720 --> 00:10:13.600
...for defending nature
and these lands.
00:10:14.000 --> 00:10:16.200
80s, 2017.
00:10:16.240 --> 00:10:19.240
Are people still dying,
is it still happening?
00:10:19.640 --> 00:10:22.960
Yes, people are still dying.
They are activists...
00:10:23.000 --> 00:10:28.960
...who defend the environment
and who fight for it.
DIEGO BEZERRA - INSTITUTE CHICO
MENDES OF BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION
00:10:29.600 --> 00:10:31.960
The eyes of the world
are on the Amazon...
00:10:32.000 --> 00:10:35.720
...because we have water, soil,...
00:10:36.160 --> 00:10:40.800
...minerals, jungle, animals...
00:10:42.360 --> 00:10:45.840
The Amazon has many riches
and that attracts greed.
00:10:52.000 --> 00:10:56.360
The Conservation Units
were separated to be preserved...
00:10:57.000 --> 00:11:00.440
...and guarantee the minimum
natural resources...
00:11:00.480 --> 00:11:03.960
...for humanity and population.
00:11:04.000 --> 00:11:06.800
They get
into the Conservation Units...
00:11:06.840 --> 00:11:09.720
...to take wood,
an environmental crime,...
00:11:09.760 --> 00:11:13.560
...to introduce cattle,
plant grass,...
00:11:14.000 --> 00:11:15.960
...to dig and extract minerals...
00:11:16.320 --> 00:11:17.800
The same resources then...
00:11:18.840 --> 00:11:21.280
...are being taken
from those conservation areas,...
00:11:21.320 --> 00:11:26.960
...that means a large part of the
Amazon lands are already destroyed.
00:11:27.000 --> 00:11:28.440
They are exploited.
00:11:28.680 --> 00:11:32.240
Correct. But there is a way of
sustainable farming and mining...
00:11:32.640 --> 00:11:36.960
...in which an area, usually huge,
is divided into plots...
00:11:37.000 --> 00:11:39.760
...and one plot per year
will be exploited.
00:11:40.720 --> 00:11:44.440
If it takes 30 years to exploit
the entire area,...
00:11:44.480 --> 00:11:47.960
...when you reach the last plot,
the first has recovered.
00:11:48.720 --> 00:11:52.760
This is sustainable exploitation,
but it doesn\'t happen here.
00:11:54.480 --> 00:11:56.440
According to data
from official observers,...
00:11:57.000 --> 00:12:00.560
...20% of the State of Pará
is already deforested.
00:12:00.600 --> 00:12:04.960
Do municipal politicians
recognize these figures...
00:12:05.000 --> 00:12:06.960
...or prefer to look away?
00:12:07.000 --> 00:12:08.400
90% of the financing...
00:12:08.440 --> 00:12:11.600
...of the political campaigns
of the State of Pará,...
00:12:11.640 --> 00:12:14.200
...from councillors
to the government,...
00:12:14.520 --> 00:12:17.800
...is related
to environmental crimes.
00:12:17.840 --> 00:12:20.600
That money comes
from illegal gold digs,...
00:12:20.800 --> 00:12:22.040
...of illegal wood,...
00:12:22.200 --> 00:12:25.960
...and the illegal cattle
within the Conservation Units.
00:12:26.600 --> 00:12:28.960
Both things can\'t be separated.
00:12:29.000 --> 00:12:31.760
So, when we do an inspection...
00:12:32.000 --> 00:12:34.040
...and we surprise
the offenders,...
00:12:34.200 --> 00:12:36.520
...the guys
that we surprise cutting,...
00:12:36.560 --> 00:12:37.880
...are only small fish,...
00:12:38.000 --> 00:12:40.440
...are just victims
of the process,...
00:12:40.480 --> 00:12:43.040
...who are there
to support their families.
00:12:43.080 --> 00:12:46.960
The system places them
in a position in which they see...
00:12:47.000 --> 00:12:49.960
...the environmental inspection
as the villain...
00:12:50.000 --> 00:12:53.600
...and not as protectors
of the heritage...
00:12:53.640 --> 00:12:56.640
...for their descendants
and humanity.
00:12:56.720 --> 00:12:58.440
Those environmental crimes,...
00:12:58.480 --> 00:13:02.280
...sometimes turn
into personal crimes.
00:13:02.320 --> 00:13:06.720
Of course, here are many stories
of murders because of the land.
00:13:08.440 --> 00:13:09.760
TAPAJOS RIVER BRAZIL
00:13:10.000 --> 00:13:11.880
The Tapajos river basin...
00:13:11.920 --> 00:13:14.360
...is the heart
of the Brazilian Amazon.
00:13:14.640 --> 00:13:17.680
Due to its natural wealth
and strategic position,...
00:13:17.720 --> 00:13:19.520
...land grabbers...
00:13:19.560 --> 00:13:22.920
...have tried to expel their
legitimate owners for years...
00:13:22.960 --> 00:13:26.720
...with false documents, pressures,
and high doses of violence.
00:13:29.000 --> 00:13:31.960
ALGEU LOBO - PRESIDENT OF
THE COMMUNITY MONTANHA MANGABAL
00:13:32.000 --> 00:13:34.440
They call you \"riberinhos\".
00:13:34.480 --> 00:13:36.960
We are born and raised
on the river bank.
00:13:37.000 --> 00:13:39.960
My family is the seventh
generation in this place.
00:13:40.000 --> 00:13:44.800
Here we live
from the collection of fruits,...
00:13:44.840 --> 00:13:46.800
hunting, artisan fishing.
00:13:48.000 --> 00:13:51.120
We are in a place
where there is no pollution.
00:13:52.880 --> 00:13:54.960
The land you inhabit is yours?
00:13:55.000 --> 00:13:57.840
There is a court resolution
of 2006...
00:13:58.000 --> 00:14:01.040
...that legitimizes us
as owners of these lands.
00:14:02.440 --> 00:14:06.040
The way to mark it,
is placing a banner?
00:14:06.400 --> 00:14:10.440
We write with a machete on a wood:
00:14:11.000 --> 00:14:13.720
\"Unauthorized entry not allowed\".
00:14:14.000 --> 00:14:15.280
Does someone watch?
00:14:15.320 --> 00:14:17.320
There are no resources to watch.
00:14:18.000 --> 00:14:20.080
When the judge said this area...
00:14:20.160 --> 00:14:22.760
...belonged to the inhabitants
of Montanha Mangabal,...
00:14:23.000 --> 00:14:26.720
...he stipulated a fine for people
who entered this territory...
00:14:26.760 --> 00:14:29.560
...for a value
of 10,000 reais per day.
00:14:29.600 --> 00:14:33.840
So, this land is being violated
because people enter,...
00:14:34.000 --> 00:14:37.040
...take wood, take gold,
palmetto... everything.
00:14:37.720 --> 00:14:40.960
What happens to those who report?
Are they exposed?
00:14:41.760 --> 00:14:42.960
They are threatened.
00:14:43.320 --> 00:14:44.800
Threatened with death.
00:14:45.000 --> 00:14:46.960
Are you threatened?
-Yes.
00:14:47.000 --> 00:14:48.160
By whom?
00:14:48.320 --> 00:14:50.560
That person is known
as \"Bahiano\"...
00:14:50.760 --> 00:14:53.920
...who wants our wood
from our land.
00:14:54.000 --> 00:14:58.640
He came and told me something
could happen to me, like dying,...
00:14:58.680 --> 00:15:02.440
...someone could kill me, because
I\'m on the radar of many people.
00:15:02.480 --> 00:15:05.200
Here you live with your wife,
alone.
00:15:05.240 --> 00:15:06.960
Alone, my wife and me.
00:15:07.000 --> 00:15:10.360
How long does it take
to get to the closest community?
00:15:10.400 --> 00:15:13.000
It\'s about 30 minutes by boat.
00:15:14.000 --> 00:15:17.280
Why did you decide
to come with your family...
00:15:17.320 --> 00:15:19.320
...to a more isolated area?
00:15:19.440 --> 00:15:22.600
Because when you live
in a very inhabited place,...
00:15:23.000 --> 00:15:26.800
...as there are many people,
you cannot have a crop.
00:15:27.000 --> 00:15:30.720
In order to be self-sufficient
and have your own crops,...
00:15:31.000 --> 00:15:33.240
...you come here
and risk your life?
00:15:36.360 --> 00:15:39.960
I travel a lot to Itaituba,
which is the nearest city...
00:15:40.000 --> 00:15:42.320
...and when I go,
I change logistics.
00:15:46.680 --> 00:15:49.800
There is a project to build
a hydroelectric plant.
00:15:49.840 --> 00:15:52.120
If it were built,
what would happen?
00:15:52.280 --> 00:15:53.960
We should go.
00:15:54.000 --> 00:15:57.680
When a hydroelectric plant
is built in a river,...
00:15:58.000 --> 00:15:59.840
...the banks of the river flood...
00:16:00.000 --> 00:16:04.600
...and the inhabitants
of the shores have to leave.
00:16:05.000 --> 00:16:07.960
How many real fronts
do they have as enemies?
00:16:08.000 --> 00:16:09.760
The Federal Government,...
00:16:09.800 --> 00:16:13.000
...which wants this project
to advance...
00:16:13.040 --> 00:16:17.720
...to improve the Brazilian economy
and to generate more energy.
00:16:19.000 --> 00:16:20.360
What is development?
00:16:20.760 --> 00:16:23.560
A progress
only for those who already have.
00:16:23.720 --> 00:16:27.280
The rich will have more
and the poor, less...
00:16:27.680 --> 00:16:28.720
Or nothing.
00:16:35.760 --> 00:16:39.960
What if those who exploit the land
also are the ones in government?
00:16:40.000 --> 00:16:43.560
In these isolated areas,
the boundaries are blurred...
00:16:43.600 --> 00:16:48.200
...and many of the big scavengers
also occupy public positions.
00:16:48.800 --> 00:16:49.960
In Itaituba,...
00:16:50.000 --> 00:16:54.960
...the mayor was convicted
for illicit wood extraction,...
00:16:55.000 --> 00:16:57.760
...and is being
currently investigated...
00:16:57.800 --> 00:17:01.040
...for misappropriation of one
million reais of public money.
00:17:01.080 --> 00:17:03.080
VALMIR CLIMACO
MAYOR OF ITAITUBA
00:17:03.760 --> 00:17:06.800
This is called
the city of the nugget,...
00:17:06.840 --> 00:17:08.960
...what does gold mean here?
00:17:09.240 --> 00:17:14.280
60% or 70% of the municipality\'s
economy comes from gold.
00:17:14.960 --> 00:17:18.400
The city produces more
than one ton of gold per month,...
00:17:18.440 --> 00:17:20.520
...12 or 13 tons per year.
00:17:20.920 --> 00:17:25.000
Gold is undoubtedly the largest
economy and income of this city.
00:17:29.000 --> 00:17:30.400
Are there illegal mines?
00:17:30.520 --> 00:17:34.480
Lately, the extraction
has been fairly regularized,...
00:17:35.000 --> 00:17:37.320
...but there are still
some illegal mines,...
00:17:37.680 --> 00:17:41.400
...particularly, those within
the Conservation Units.
00:17:42.000 --> 00:17:44.640
They were created in the 2000s...
00:17:44.680 --> 00:17:48.200
...and there were mines
that had been here...
00:17:48.240 --> 00:17:50.400
...for more than 40-50 years.
00:17:50.800 --> 00:17:52.960
The miners
did not invade the reserve,...
00:17:53.000 --> 00:17:56.960
...the federal government created
the reserve with the miners.
00:17:57.000 --> 00:18:02.240
They found out it was a protected
area they couldn\'t exploit.
00:18:03.000 --> 00:18:05.960
When the Federal Government,
in the 70s,...
00:18:06.000 --> 00:18:09.840
...opened the Trans-amazon
highway and the BR63...
00:18:10.280 --> 00:18:12.960
...encouraged the people
to inhabit the area...
00:18:13.400 --> 00:18:17.160
...and then decided to expel them
through a decree.
00:18:18.000 --> 00:18:21.240
We have to trust
the legislation of our country,...
00:18:22.080 --> 00:18:26.600
...but how could you give
permission to a person...
00:18:27.280 --> 00:18:29.400
...to work and deforest,...
00:18:30.160 --> 00:18:32.640
...and now, the Government
creates a Reserve?
00:18:34.000 --> 00:18:36.120
It is impossible
to live in a country...
00:18:36.280 --> 00:18:40.400
...that confiscates the patrimony
that it itself gave years ago.
00:18:41.000 --> 00:18:42.400
There are other threats...
00:18:42.440 --> 00:18:46.240
...for people who have lived here
for a long time,...
00:18:46.280 --> 00:18:49.640
...for example, the project
of a hydroelectric...
00:18:50.000 --> 00:18:51.400
I am for hydroelectric plants,...
00:18:52.440 --> 00:18:56.960
I can say the environmental impact
is small.
00:18:57.000 --> 00:18:58.360
Where it is going to flood,...
00:18:58.400 --> 00:19:01.320
...practically,
there is nobody living.
00:19:01.360 --> 00:19:02.640
Few families...
00:19:02.680 --> 00:19:06.360
...to which the government
can relocate and compensate.
00:19:07.000 --> 00:19:09.960
But those communities have lived
there all their lives,...
00:19:10.000 --> 00:19:12.000
...for many generations.
00:19:12.320 --> 00:19:14.720
Yes, but we understand
that a hydroelectric plant...
00:19:14.760 --> 00:19:19.200
...cannot be built without losses.
00:19:20.000 --> 00:19:24.600
The river people have not told me
about the Reserve,...
00:19:24.640 --> 00:19:26.960
...they are worried
about the plant.
00:19:27.320 --> 00:19:30.360
In a Reserve, you cannot build
a hydroelectric dam.
00:19:30.520 --> 00:19:32.680
It\'s not coherent.
00:19:34.240 --> 00:19:36.240
The government
has created the Reserve,...
00:19:36.280 --> 00:19:38.720
...but the place where the plant
will be built,...
00:19:38.760 --> 00:19:42.560
...occupies several reserves
but a small part.
00:19:42.600 --> 00:19:45.800
Only 50 hectares
are taken from some of them.
00:19:47.920 --> 00:19:49.360
The hydroelectric project...
00:19:49.400 --> 00:19:52.400
...is the start
of a much larger drain,...
00:19:52.880 --> 00:19:55.120
...the Tapajos
Hydroelectric Complex.
00:19:56.000 --> 00:19:59.480
The aim is to build
more than 40 hydroelectric dams...
00:19:59.520 --> 00:20:03.200
...that will affect
more than two million people,...
00:20:03.240 --> 00:20:07.160
...indigenous people, ribereños,
and traditional communities.
00:20:07.320 --> 00:20:11.600
Only in the areas closest
to the municipality of Itaituba...
00:20:11.640 --> 00:20:15.960
...would the dams flood
a protected land area...
00:20:16.000 --> 00:20:18.320
...of the size of Spain and Italy.
00:20:18.560 --> 00:20:21.520
Taking into account
the investment and the profit,...
00:20:22.760 --> 00:20:25.960
...the environmental damage
is not so great,...
00:20:26.360 --> 00:20:29.360
...but who is against
the hydroelectric plants....
00:20:29.400 --> 00:20:31.320
...is not the people of Brazil,...
00:20:31.360 --> 00:20:34.960
...who oppose the Jamanxi
hydroelectric plants...
00:20:35.000 --> 00:20:37.240
...are the other countries,...
00:20:37.280 --> 00:20:39.600
...where they have deforested
everything...
00:20:39.680 --> 00:20:43.000
...and now,
they want to rule the Amazon.
00:20:43.560 --> 00:20:47.360
We know what is good
for our region, they do not.
00:20:49.000 --> 00:20:50.840
In the Kyoto agreement,...
00:20:50.880 --> 00:20:54.160
...President Bush,
if I\'m not mistaken,...
00:20:54.200 --> 00:20:57.560
...opposed signing
that agreement...
00:20:57.600 --> 00:21:01.360
...that forced us
to reduce US industries.
00:21:01.400 --> 00:21:03.760
We also want to be
a rich country,...
00:21:03.800 --> 00:21:06.520
...we need technology
and investments,...
00:21:06.560 --> 00:21:08.280
...because we need development.
00:21:09.000 --> 00:21:10.800
We like internet,...
00:21:10.840 --> 00:21:14.360
...energy, new cars...
00:21:14.760 --> 00:21:19.720
Is it possible to coexist between
the protection of nature,...
00:21:19.760 --> 00:21:23.400
...the environment,
the Amazon, and progress?
00:21:23.840 --> 00:21:28.040
Every year, we see
that deforestation is decreasing.
00:21:29.000 --> 00:21:32.960
From here to Belem,
there must be 5% deforested.
00:21:33.320 --> 00:21:36.760
It seems to me to be very little.
00:21:37.520 --> 00:21:40.120
Data from national
and international reports...
00:21:40.160 --> 00:21:43.960
...do not speak of 5%,
but a much higher percentage.
00:21:44.000 --> 00:21:46.000
How much is it in your country?
00:21:46.040 --> 00:21:49.200
How much is it in Europe,
in the USA?
00:21:49.720 --> 00:21:54.240
Most people who deforest
in Itaituba come from outside.
00:21:54.520 --> 00:21:57.600
You came from abroad
to work the land here...
00:21:57.960 --> 00:22:02.480
I came from the Northeast
and I manage haciendas.
00:22:03.480 --> 00:22:07.960
In the region, I own a construction
company and other companies.
00:22:08.000 --> 00:22:09.960
Do you own wood companies?
00:22:10.000 --> 00:22:12.080
No, I\'ve had, but not anymore.
00:22:12.720 --> 00:22:16.240
Now, I also own mining,
gold companies.
00:22:16.560 --> 00:22:19.280
You, not as Mayor,
but as an individual,...
00:22:19.320 --> 00:22:23.560
...are directly affected
by changes in Federal law.
00:22:23.680 --> 00:22:27.280
Yes, those changes affect me,
but we are accepting them.
00:22:28.400 --> 00:22:30.600
We are not going to allow...
00:22:30.640 --> 00:22:34.440
...someone to come
from another country or state...
00:22:34.920 --> 00:22:38.680
...to mess in the jungles
of the municipality of Itaituba.
00:22:40.760 --> 00:22:43.840
TAPAJOS RIVER
BRAZIL
00:22:53.680 --> 00:22:55.560
ADELINE LAVAL ANTHROPOLOGIST
00:22:58.640 --> 00:22:59.960
I saw in the news...
00:23:00.000 --> 00:23:03.280
...they were going to build
a hydroelectric plant here,...
00:23:04.000 --> 00:23:06.920
...EDF, Electricité de France,...
00:23:06.960 --> 00:23:11.760
...the largest
French electricity company,...
00:23:11.800 --> 00:23:14.880
French people pay every month,...
00:23:14.920 --> 00:23:18.920
...and that is going to finance
this project, to make money...
00:23:19.000 --> 00:23:23.400
...with the destruction
of this region and this river,...
00:23:24.840 --> 00:23:27.480
...expelling the people
who live here.
00:23:27.920 --> 00:23:32.640
For that French company,
it might be energy, development...
00:23:32.680 --> 00:23:34.640
But you talk about destruction.
00:23:34.680 --> 00:23:38.480
Today there are
many sustainable solutions.
00:23:40.120 --> 00:23:42.400
They are going to cut the river.
00:23:44.800 --> 00:23:48.600
The Munduruku say they can\'t be
separated from the jungle.
00:23:49.440 --> 00:23:52.640
The jungle is here,
and the river is next to it.
00:23:53.480 --> 00:23:54.960
It\'s their house.
-It is.
00:23:55.840 --> 00:24:00.560
Their whole world develops
in that environment.
00:24:01.800 --> 00:24:05.400
In the river, they bathe,
fish, wash their things...
00:24:05.440 --> 00:24:08.920
Absolutely everything.
00:24:08.960 --> 00:24:11.920
They could drink that water.
Now, they cannot.
00:24:11.960 --> 00:24:12.960
Why?
00:24:13.560 --> 00:24:15.960
It contains mercury,
it is contaminated.
00:24:16.000 --> 00:24:18.960
Where does mercury come from?
00:24:19.000 --> 00:24:20.360
It has two origins.
00:24:20.760 --> 00:24:23.200
The miners with dredges
here use it.
00:24:24.000 --> 00:24:28.320
They mix water with mercury
to extract the gold.
00:24:29.360 --> 00:24:32.960
And it also comes
from deforestation,...
00:24:33.000 --> 00:24:36.000
...because cutting down trees...
00:24:36.600 --> 00:24:39.520
...causes mercury to escape
from the ground,...
00:24:41.000 --> 00:24:44.440
...because the ground
naturally contains mercury.
00:24:45.000 --> 00:24:48.600
That deforestation causes erosion.
00:24:54.400 --> 00:24:57.600
Many people who live here
don\'t have a good education,...
00:24:57.640 --> 00:25:00.560
...many, don\'t even
ever leave this area.
00:25:01.080 --> 00:25:04.960
Do they know the river
is poisoned...
00:25:05.000 --> 00:25:07.320
...and what mercury means?
00:25:08.000 --> 00:25:12.520
Now they know it, but they do not
have very clear information,...
00:25:14.000 --> 00:25:16.400
...the government does not give it.
00:25:18.720 --> 00:25:21.280
Nobody cares about these people.
00:25:22.320 --> 00:25:26.320
They are poisoning them,
even knowing they are doing it.
00:25:26.760 --> 00:25:31.880
I do not know, but I think it\'s a
way to expel them little by little.
00:25:33.000 --> 00:25:37.360
There are many ways
to expel people...
00:25:37.400 --> 00:25:40.320
...because their presence
is disrupting the economy.
00:25:41.680 --> 00:25:45.560
If this town is still here,
progress will not come,...
00:25:46.600 --> 00:25:50.240
...but they are the guarantee
for the jungle to continue.
00:25:54.080 --> 00:25:58.640
We take away their gold,
plant soy for us.
00:26:00.520 --> 00:26:05.520
Why? Because we need
what we do not produce in Europe.
00:26:06.080 --> 00:26:08.400
What is the price
of that production?
00:26:08.760 --> 00:26:12.160
What is the price
of the meat they eat there?
00:26:13.640 --> 00:26:18.560
The price is the destruction of
the way of life of those children.
00:26:21.560 --> 00:26:22.640
We pay for that.
00:26:24.480 --> 00:26:28.040
I do not say that we are guilty,
but we are responsible.
00:26:28.080 --> 00:26:32.000
What we buy in a supermarket
means, maybe,...
00:26:32.040 --> 00:26:34.520
...hectares deforested here,...
00:26:34.800 --> 00:26:39.440
...to plant soybeans that,
in turn, serve to feed cattle...
00:26:39.680 --> 00:26:42.320
...that will go
to our supermarkets.
00:26:42.360 --> 00:26:46.320
Sure! The gold earrings
that many people crave,...
00:26:49.680 --> 00:26:53.880
...make many people die
intoxicated by mercury here,...
00:26:55.320 --> 00:26:56.720
...but that\'s the price.
00:26:58.000 --> 00:27:01.800
We throw poison when we enjoy
beautiful gold jewellery.
00:27:02.000 --> 00:27:05.800
I think this information
can no longer be hidden,...
00:27:05.840 --> 00:27:08.840
...we cannot close our eyes.
00:27:09.000 --> 00:27:10.720
The struggle for what is theirs?
00:27:11.320 --> 00:27:12.320
It\'s dangerous,...
00:27:12.360 --> 00:27:15.600
...because they face people...
00:27:15.640 --> 00:27:17.720
...who sometimes have weapons,...
00:27:19.320 --> 00:27:22.040
...other times,
they will be threatened,...
00:27:23.640 --> 00:27:28.360
...but they are warriors
and they will never stop fighting.
00:27:29.360 --> 00:27:33.760
These people know well they are not
only fighting for them,...
00:27:34.280 --> 00:27:35.960
...but for the whole world.
00:27:37.000 --> 00:27:38.200
This is very hard,...
00:27:38.240 --> 00:27:41.320
...because they help
the whole planet...
00:27:41.360 --> 00:27:45.600
...and what do we do in return?
Nothing.
00:27:45.720 --> 00:27:50.320
I do not know if it\'s normal,
it does not make sense.
00:27:54.920 --> 00:28:00.000
The Tapajos River is inhabited
by more than 10,000 Mundurukus,...
00:28:01.320 --> 00:28:03.960
...living in some
of the most populated...
00:28:04.000 --> 00:28:06.240
...and ancient towns of the Amazon.
00:28:06.280 --> 00:28:08.320
They depend on the jungle,...
00:28:08.840 --> 00:28:11.200
...but although the Constitution
recognises them...
00:28:11.240 --> 00:28:13.240
...as lords of their land,...
00:28:13.760 --> 00:28:17.200
...the arrows of progress
fall closer and closer to them.
00:28:17.560 --> 00:28:23.040
The Munduruku existed
long before Brazil existed.
00:28:23.400 --> 00:28:27.800
Yes, Brazil was baptized later.
JUÁREZ SAW MUNDURUKU
CACIQUE OF SAWRÉ MUYBU.
00:28:29.240 --> 00:28:33.480
But us, the indigenous people,
had been living here for longer.
00:28:34.000 --> 00:28:38.120
...that is why we say that
we are made of this land.
00:28:40.000 --> 00:28:41.600
The Government wants us...
00:28:41.640 --> 00:28:46.560
...to become Brazilian citizens
like the others,...
00:28:46.600 --> 00:28:50.840
...but it is not possible.
We want to be indigenous.
00:28:52.000 --> 00:28:54.280
The Brazilian Government
promised...
00:28:54.320 --> 00:29:00.040
...to set a demarcation
of your territory to protect it,...
00:29:00.080 --> 00:29:05.040
...but the demarcation was finally
made by the Mundurukus.
00:29:05.080 --> 00:29:06.960
They set a self-demarcation.
00:29:08.000 --> 00:29:10.040
We made the demarcation...
00:29:12.000 --> 00:29:15.960
...to know our land,
to know how to protect it...
00:29:16.320 --> 00:29:18.680
...how to keep it
and watch over it.
00:29:21.400 --> 00:29:25.960
Mundurukus are settling
throughout the territory...
00:29:26.000 --> 00:29:27.960
...to create new villages.
00:29:28.000 --> 00:29:31.320
It is necessary,
the territory is very extensive.
00:29:31.960 --> 00:29:33.480
How big is the land?
00:29:33.840 --> 00:29:35.920
173,000 hectares.
00:29:38.680 --> 00:29:41.240
Therefore,
if the villages were not...
00:29:41.280 --> 00:29:46.520
...in the outskirts of the
territory, we could not defend it.
00:29:47.640 --> 00:29:50.480
When an invasion arrives,
as you call it,...
00:29:51.000 --> 00:29:52.200
...what do you do?
00:29:52.240 --> 00:29:53.680
We talk to them,...
00:29:54.440 --> 00:29:58.080
...we tell them the land is
indigenous and they cannot enter.
00:29:58.440 --> 00:30:00.560
Is your weapon the word?
-Yes.
00:30:01.360 --> 00:30:05.960
People who want to get an economic
benefit from your territory,...
00:30:06.000 --> 00:30:08.960
...do they understand the word?
Is it enough?
00:30:09.320 --> 00:30:13.520
No, no... they do not respect it.
00:30:18.360 --> 00:30:24.440
Sometimes, we ask ourselves,
is the white man intelligent?
00:30:26.000 --> 00:30:28.640
What does he use
his intelligence for?
00:30:28.680 --> 00:30:30.480
To destroy the Amazon?
00:30:31.440 --> 00:30:34.400
The climate changes every year.
00:30:36.000 --> 00:30:37.560
It is getting hotter...
00:30:40.000 --> 00:30:44.880
...and the river
and its tributaries are drying up.
00:30:47.000 --> 00:30:49.960
The body of the Amazon
is like ours.
00:30:51.920 --> 00:30:53.960
It has veins on all sides.
00:30:54.400 --> 00:30:59.120
If you cut a vein from your arm,
you will be obviously weak,...
00:31:01.440 --> 00:31:02.960
...because you bleed...
00:31:03.360 --> 00:31:05.280
...and the river does, too.
00:31:05.960 --> 00:31:11.480
If we do not become aware,
we are all going to die.
00:31:21.680 --> 00:31:25.480
\"If we do not become
aware we are all going to die\",...
00:31:25.800 --> 00:31:28.600
The phrase is like a mantra
in my head,...
00:31:28.960 --> 00:31:32.320
...the last energy and mineral
frontier in the Amazon...
00:31:32.360 --> 00:31:34.360
...has begun to dry up...
00:31:34.760 --> 00:31:38.760
...and there is nothing like
navigating its shores to realize.
00:31:41.480 --> 00:31:44.440
WALTER CIRINO
ILLEGAL MINER
00:31:49.320 --> 00:31:52.040
For us, this river
is a source of life.
00:31:52.080 --> 00:31:57.160
I can support my family better
than many people with good jobs.
00:31:57.680 --> 00:31:58.960
The Tapajos provides me.
00:31:59.000 --> 00:32:00.640
And you work extracting gold.
00:32:00.680 --> 00:32:02.840
Yes, I am a miner,
so was my father.
00:32:03.120 --> 00:32:05.320
How much does a worker earn?
00:32:05.360 --> 00:32:07.400
Of the gross gold he extracts, 40%.
00:32:07.440 --> 00:32:09.280
What is the process?
00:32:13.400 --> 00:32:15.960
He submerges,
he probes the beach,...
00:32:16.000 --> 00:32:19.760
...he may find hard sand,
sometimes pebbles...
00:32:20.440 --> 00:32:23.840
Among the pebbles,
there is black sand...
00:32:23.880 --> 00:32:26.880
...where the gold is concentrated.
00:32:28.560 --> 00:32:31.960
In this machine, it enters
in a process of debugging?
00:32:32.600 --> 00:32:34.240
Everything is mixed.
00:32:36.000 --> 00:32:40.960
We put it in a bucket
and wash it to find the gold.
00:32:41.520 --> 00:32:45.200
Is this mine, a traditional mine,
bad for the river?
00:32:45.280 --> 00:32:48.640
Not because we pollute
as little as possible.
00:32:50.000 --> 00:32:53.400
Everything will be
the same tomorrow.
00:32:53.440 --> 00:32:56.440
But with dredgers, it will not.
00:32:56.920 --> 00:33:00.520
Look at the dredge that worked
there, how it left everything.
00:33:02.000 --> 00:33:05.400
The white mound is what they take
from the bottom.
00:33:06.000 --> 00:33:08.440
Even if we worked two years,...
00:33:09.880 --> 00:33:13.400
...we would not get to do
what they do in a day.
00:33:18.520 --> 00:33:23.800
All these mounds of sand
that can look like a beach,...
00:33:23.840 --> 00:33:28.240
...is the result of a long time
of dredging and taking out gold?
00:33:28.280 --> 00:33:29.400
Exactly.
00:33:29.440 --> 00:33:33.680
There are no longer natural
beaches, now there are only stones.
00:33:33.920 --> 00:33:35.760
Has the river channel changed?
00:33:36.080 --> 00:33:37.800
The river was straight, nice,...
00:33:37.840 --> 00:33:40.360
...there were no mounds
of the dredges.
00:33:41.400 --> 00:33:42.800
Now everything is dry.
00:33:43.760 --> 00:33:47.120
Those working with large boats,
rafts, and ships,...
00:33:47.160 --> 00:33:49.120
...can no longer navigate.
00:33:49.160 --> 00:33:53.280
It was unnavigable
because the river was low,...
00:33:53.320 --> 00:33:57.600
...the lands have been removed
and you can only sail in winter.
00:33:58.680 --> 00:34:04.560
It\'s not the small miners, it\'s the
big ones that take out the gold,...
00:34:04.800 --> 00:34:08.440
...they only leave this destruction
of nature. Only destruction.
00:34:27.160 --> 00:34:32.960
Brazil\'s rainforests cover an area
of 5 million square kilometres,...
00:34:33.200 --> 00:34:35.320
20 times the United Kingdom.
00:34:35.480 --> 00:34:38.520
A space as large
as it is impossible to control,...
00:34:38.560 --> 00:34:41.960
...especially when the agencies
in charge of doing so...
00:34:42.000 --> 00:34:45.240
...do not have enough technical
equipment or staff.
00:34:46.400 --> 00:34:48.960
We went on a secret operation...
00:34:49.000 --> 00:34:52.160
...by the Chico Mendes Institute
of Biodiversity.
00:34:52.520 --> 00:34:57.000
The setting is a Conservation
Unit that is being depleted.
00:34:58.040 --> 00:35:02.400
Five inspectors of the institute,
six firemen and eight military,...
00:35:02.520 --> 00:35:06.320
...aware that they form a convoy
that is up against it.
00:35:08.000 --> 00:35:11.520
How many kilometres have we done
in approximately 14 hours?
00:35:11.560 --> 00:35:13.120
170 km.
00:35:13.160 --> 00:35:15.960
Obstacle, after obstacle,
after obstacle.
00:35:16.400 --> 00:35:18.520
Actually, in the last five hours...
00:35:18.560 --> 00:35:23.560
...we advanced
seven kilometres per hour.
00:35:25.200 --> 00:35:26.320
Where are we?
00:35:26.920 --> 00:35:32.160
On the border between the Trairão
area and the Jamanxi National Park.
00:35:33.240 --> 00:35:37.640
There are two Conservation Units
in which entry is not allowed.
00:35:38.800 --> 00:35:42.680
However, we walk on dirt roads.
00:35:43.680 --> 00:35:46.880
These roads haven\'t been built
by the State or the town.
00:35:46.920 --> 00:35:49.240
The loggers have built them.
LEONARDO KONRATH
HEAD OF OPERATIONS IN ICMBIO
00:35:49.280 --> 00:35:54.680
You use the infrastructure built
by the loggers to surprise them.
00:35:54.720 --> 00:35:55.720
Exactly.
00:35:55.920 --> 00:36:00.200
Just as you see destroyed trees
and felled spaces,...
00:36:00.240 --> 00:36:02.280
...there are hidden flags,
what are they?
00:36:03.040 --> 00:36:07.760
Generally, there are people who
come before the trucks arrive...
00:36:08.480 --> 00:36:13.200
...to signpost the trees whose
wood has some economic interest.
00:36:15.000 --> 00:36:18.480
They go for the trees
that really give them money.
00:36:18.520 --> 00:36:19.520
Exactly.
00:36:19.560 --> 00:36:23.480
But they destroy everything else
that keeps them away from the tree.
00:36:23.640 --> 00:36:25.600
They do not care
where the tree falls,...
00:36:26.320 --> 00:36:29.440
...in its fall,
it knocks down other trees.
00:36:36.640 --> 00:36:39.960
How many trucks go through here
every day filled with wood?
00:36:40.200 --> 00:36:44.280
We know that here, on average,
about ten trucks leave a day.
00:36:45.000 --> 00:36:49.360
Each truck carries between
20 and 25 cubic metres of wood.
00:36:50.240 --> 00:36:54.280
Do your enemies
have greater means than you?
00:36:54.400 --> 00:36:55.400
Exactly.
00:36:56.440 --> 00:37:00.560
They have radio, mobile,
internet, they communicate nimbly.
00:37:01.320 --> 00:37:05.680
When we move
to make an inspection,...
00:37:06.640 --> 00:37:08.960
...they easily know
we are arriving.
00:37:09.360 --> 00:37:13.000
It is difficult to establish
a strategy that surprises them.
00:37:14.000 --> 00:37:16.920
Only with a helicopter
could we reach them.
00:37:17.520 --> 00:37:20.880
If we had a helicopter,
we could get to the place...
00:37:21.000 --> 00:37:24.320
...where the trucks are
extracting wood, and act quickly.
00:37:25.000 --> 00:37:28.960
They often fell other trees
that don\'t interest them...
00:37:29.000 --> 00:37:34.440
...in front of our cars and,
as they do it, they go away...
00:37:34.480 --> 00:37:39.840
...and we\'re left behind stuck with
the trees that they have cut down.
00:37:41.160 --> 00:37:43.520
Right now,
could you be being watched?
00:37:43.560 --> 00:37:45.920
Probably, probably.
00:37:46.800 --> 00:37:48.480
Do you feel watched?
00:37:49.000 --> 00:37:52.920
It is normal that we receive
phone calls with threats,...
00:37:52.960 --> 00:37:55.960
...anonymous letters.
00:37:56.000 --> 00:37:57.960
Letters that tell you what?
00:37:58.000 --> 00:38:01.960
They warn us that they can
shorten our lives any time.
00:38:02.840 --> 00:38:05.760
We are an obstacle to them
carrying out their business.
00:39:00.760 --> 00:39:02.120
It\'s very dangerous.
00:39:07.240 --> 00:39:08.240
Someone came...
00:39:09.840 --> 00:39:10.920
...on a motorcycle,...
00:39:12.800 --> 00:39:15.280
...threw it here
and hid in the jungle.
00:39:17.400 --> 00:39:20.960
And with the impotence
of knowing you lost the battle,...
00:39:21.080 --> 00:39:26.600
...the team knows that this time
they will not stop anyone either.
00:39:32.120 --> 00:39:33.480
SANTAREM BRAZIL
00:39:34.960 --> 00:39:38.680
Brazil has many laws that,
theoretically,...
00:39:39.000 --> 00:39:40.600
...should stop deforestation,...
00:39:40.640 --> 00:39:43.920
...encourage sustainable
natural resources.
00:39:44.000 --> 00:39:47.600
The problem
is they are small tools...
00:39:49.000 --> 00:39:51.000
...in a war against giants.
00:39:51.040 --> 00:39:54.960
All that surrounds us is material
confiscated in field operations.
00:39:55.400 --> 00:39:59.600
This wood for many people
are money, they are business.
00:39:59.640 --> 00:40:00.640
And for you?
00:40:01.880 --> 00:40:05.920
The corpse of a war
that is not near the end.
00:40:06.640 --> 00:40:09.800
It is increasingly exacerbated.
MARÍA LUIZA GONÇALVEZ
COORDINATOR AND PROSECUTOR OF IBAMA
00:40:10.400 --> 00:40:12.240
Something needs to be done.
00:40:13.000 --> 00:40:17.960
Is the equipment of IBAMA
in Amazon enough?
00:40:18.280 --> 00:40:19.760
No, it\'s not enough.
00:40:20.560 --> 00:40:24.640
Within IBAMA, very few inspectors
want to work in the Amazon,...
00:40:25.000 --> 00:40:30.400
...mainly because of danger and the
implicit violence in our activity.
00:40:31.600 --> 00:40:36.760
Our plane has been sabotaged,
we have been shot several times.
00:40:37.520 --> 00:40:42.640
Threats are increasingly strong
against the inspectors.
00:40:45.480 --> 00:40:47.680
They say \"you are going to die\".
00:40:47.720 --> 00:40:51.720
They write on the vans:
\"Four more dead\".
00:40:52.000 --> 00:40:55.760
Videos on the Internet,
on Facebook, WhatsApp...
00:40:57.200 --> 00:41:01.600
\"It will stop when she has a bullet
in her head\", \"she has to go\".
00:41:03.000 --> 00:41:04.320
Were you scared?
00:41:04.360 --> 00:41:06.960
No, because I take precautions.
00:41:07.840 --> 00:41:11.080
I\'m armed. I have a gun,
calibre 40,...
00:41:11.120 --> 00:41:14.280
I am aware that if I ever have
to shoot, I will.
00:41:14.560 --> 00:41:16.040
It did it before.
00:41:16.600 --> 00:41:20.960
Between my life and another\'s...
A weapon is useful, I\'m armed.
00:41:21.760 --> 00:41:24.760
If I have received threats,
it is because, in fact,...
00:41:24.800 --> 00:41:28.440
...we have disturbed
who we should.
00:41:29.720 --> 00:41:35.120
I\'m not scared, I\'m even stronger,
but I am much more attentive.
00:41:35.320 --> 00:41:40.240
As you tell it, it makes me think
about the war against drugs.
00:41:40.360 --> 00:41:45.720
Environmental crime uses similar
tools to those of drug trafficking.
00:41:47.040 --> 00:41:49.640
It gives more benefit
and has fewer risks.
00:41:50.240 --> 00:41:54.360
Environmental crime
has less offensive potential,...
00:41:54.840 --> 00:41:58.760
...from two to four years in prison
and a basic fine.
00:41:58.800 --> 00:42:00.240
It\'s worth it.
00:42:00.760 --> 00:42:01.960
\"Before IBAMA arrives...
00:42:02.000 --> 00:42:06.640
I\'ll raise 100 heads of cattle
that will pay this.\"
00:42:06.680 --> 00:42:08.040
So they feel unpunished...
00:42:08.080 --> 00:42:14.080
...because a cubic metre of oak
gives 1,300 reais.
00:42:14.440 --> 00:42:18.720
...and a tree has four or five
cubic metres, just one tree.
00:42:23.560 --> 00:42:28.480
It moves a lot of money and,
besides, it does not pay taxes.
00:42:29.240 --> 00:42:33.360
Those people, who make the most
money, are they in the country?
00:42:33.400 --> 00:42:39.200
In São Paulo, in Rio de Janeiro,
in the Legislative Chamber.
00:42:39.680 --> 00:42:43.640
They have a high power of influence
and have earned lots of money...
00:42:43.680 --> 00:42:47.120
...with territorial speculation
and environmental crime.
00:42:47.560 --> 00:42:51.400
Why are there no public policies...
00:42:51.440 --> 00:42:54.240
...against mining
and environmental crime?
00:42:54.880 --> 00:42:57.760
They are important
people with interests.
00:42:57.840 --> 00:43:01.840
The IBAMA is federal,
but one part works here in Pará,...
00:43:02.320 --> 00:43:05.320
...does the Secretary
of Environment support you?
00:43:05.480 --> 00:43:09.680
States are more concerned about
giving licenses because they raise.
00:43:10.000 --> 00:43:12.960
In fact, inspecting
only means complications.
00:43:13.480 --> 00:43:16.320
Whenever we take action
against the sawmills,...
00:43:16.360 --> 00:43:21.520
...we closed 30 or 40, we suffer
a very strong political pressure.
00:43:21.840 --> 00:43:26.320
\"No, you have to free it,
it\'s progress, the economy...\".
00:43:26.600 --> 00:43:28.960
Today we are working
without police.
00:43:29.000 --> 00:43:31.960
The police that were with us
were from the State.
00:43:32.000 --> 00:43:34.160
It is political pressure.
00:43:34.280 --> 00:43:37.800
That endangers the lives of people,
your lives.
00:43:37.840 --> 00:43:40.960
But it won\'t stop
because the police were removed.
00:43:43.600 --> 00:43:46.120
BELEM
BRAZIL
00:43:53.400 --> 00:43:56.920
LUIS FERNANDES ROCHA
SECRETARY OF ENVIRONMENT OF PARÁ
00:44:04.520 --> 00:44:07.120
There are national
and international reports...
00:44:07.160 --> 00:44:10.480
...that say that almost 80%
of the wood exported...
00:44:10.520 --> 00:44:14.960
...by Brazil and the Amazon
is illegal.
00:44:15.000 --> 00:44:16.600
It is wrong information.
00:44:17.960 --> 00:44:20.320
This year, until September,...
00:44:20.360 --> 00:44:23.600
...we seized up to
40,000 cubic metres of wood.
00:44:23.680 --> 00:44:26.600
If 40,000 cubic metres of wood
were seized,...
00:44:27.480 --> 00:44:29.960
...how much of the wood
is not confiscated?
00:44:30.440 --> 00:44:32.720
There may be more coming out,...
00:44:34.640 --> 00:44:37.440
...but I believe that,
since 2015 until now,...
00:44:38.400 --> 00:44:43.200
...more than 90 members of criminal
organizations have been arrested.
00:44:44.680 --> 00:44:48.600
It is possible that a businessman
has a legalized area,...
00:44:49.200 --> 00:44:53.200
...to extract wood and he extracts
wood from another illegal area...
00:44:53.280 --> 00:44:58.480
...and then whitens this wood
with the license of the legal area.
00:44:58.920 --> 00:45:01.600
It is possible,
but it is getting harder.
00:45:01.840 --> 00:45:06.440
There are cases,
but today it is very difficult...
00:45:06.480 --> 00:45:07.960
...thanks to our control system...
00:45:08.000 --> 00:45:11.840
...as, in addition to it, we have
the control over the internet.
00:45:13.400 --> 00:45:17.880
Is it expensive
to attack the environment?
00:45:18.320 --> 00:45:21.960
I\'d say it had been cheaper,
today it is more expensive...
00:45:23.000 --> 00:45:25.600
...because we work
on several fronts,
00:45:25.640 --> 00:45:29.160
...not only in surveillance
and seizure...
00:45:29.200 --> 00:45:33.920
...but in the civil part of damage
repair and criminal responsibility.
00:45:37.960 --> 00:45:40.360
The crime will take years
to disappear,...
00:45:40.400 --> 00:45:44.080
...but impunity
has been greatly reduced.
00:45:45.800 --> 00:45:48.440
The technological deployment
is impressive,...
00:45:48.480 --> 00:45:51.160
...but takes long to monitor,...
00:45:51.360 --> 00:45:55.640
...localize, give the information,
and take action...
00:45:57.240 --> 00:45:59.640
That depends
on the operative part...
00:46:00.840 --> 00:46:04.480
...but mainly in cases
where there is a focus,...
00:46:04.520 --> 00:46:09.280
...the action is almost immediate,
we work very fast.
00:46:09.320 --> 00:46:13.440
We\'ve heard people who are part
of federal agencies...
00:46:14.000 --> 00:46:18.320
...complaining that
the state has not supported...
00:46:18.360 --> 00:46:21.200
...the operations they claimed,...
00:46:21.280 --> 00:46:23.960
...even asking
for police support,...
00:46:24.000 --> 00:46:27.000
...that the police
in the area disappeared,...
00:46:27.080 --> 00:46:28.440
...how can this happen?
00:46:29.400 --> 00:46:31.560
I\'m not aware
of that lack of support,...
00:46:32.520 --> 00:46:35.800
...even in this centre
there is a specific room...
00:46:36.400 --> 00:46:39.960
...and we invited IBAMA
to participate in the operations.
00:46:41.240 --> 00:46:47.160
Some mayors or politicians
are loggers or miners,...
00:46:47.280 --> 00:46:50.600
...is it possible to take care
of the land...
00:46:50.640 --> 00:46:53.640
...when they have
their own interests?
00:46:53.760 --> 00:46:58.840
That is one of the great objectives
of the Government; transparency.
00:47:00.000 --> 00:47:04.280
Today, it is quickly detected...
00:47:04.320 --> 00:47:07.240
...and that ends up
inhibiting them.
00:47:07.840 --> 00:47:10.200
Many people are direct witnesses...
00:47:10.240 --> 00:47:12.960
...and yet they don\'t dare
to denounce...
00:47:13.000 --> 00:47:16.320
...for fear of reprisals
because they are even threatened.
00:47:17.040 --> 00:47:21.000
There are mechanisms
for these people...
00:47:21.040 --> 00:47:24.040
...to report
without being identified.
00:47:24.080 --> 00:47:25.200
When calling 181,...
00:47:25.240 --> 00:47:30.240
...even if the person
wants to be identified, he cannot.
00:47:30.720 --> 00:47:35.320
Are you aware that right now there
are people threatened in the State?
00:47:36.000 --> 00:47:37.000
No.
00:47:44.840 --> 00:47:46.840
ALESANDRA KORAP
MUNDURUKU WARRIOR
00:47:58.040 --> 00:48:00.000
We felt very threatened,...
00:48:01.440 --> 00:48:05.640
...because before we could go
anywhere to go hunting,...
00:48:06.600 --> 00:48:10.400
...but today the Government has set
limits without consulting us:
00:48:12.640 --> 00:48:15.440
\"Private area\",
and there you cannot step.
00:48:16.640 --> 00:48:20.040
They give land
to the great soybean growers.
00:48:20.080 --> 00:48:23.440
For development... They say.
00:48:25.160 --> 00:48:28.680
But what development ends
with the river and the jungle?
00:48:29.200 --> 00:48:31.480
What are white men for you?
00:48:32.400 --> 00:48:36.760
White men are a very big problem
for the indigenous.
00:48:39.400 --> 00:48:42.840
You, those who live
in a distant country,...
00:48:44.880 --> 00:48:47.920
...say that you do not eat meat,...
00:48:47.960 --> 00:48:50.520
...that you eat soy.
00:48:53.000 --> 00:48:55.800
You need to know
that behind these crops...
00:48:55.840 --> 00:48:57.960
...there is a huge slaughter.
00:48:58.000 --> 00:49:02.560
Many people have been killed
by soy growers and by landowners.
00:49:03.000 --> 00:49:07.920
The history of this food is full
of indigenous blood of Brazil.
00:49:08.360 --> 00:49:10.320
Do you think the world knows?
00:49:11.360 --> 00:49:12.400
I don\'t.
00:49:13.000 --> 00:49:17.560
The river is sick;
the jungle is asking for help.
00:49:19.000 --> 00:49:21.640
There are still people
who cut a tree...
00:49:23.240 --> 00:49:25.520
...to make a beautiful table.
00:49:27.560 --> 00:49:28.760
You stole fruit,...
00:49:30.760 --> 00:49:31.960
...shade,...
00:49:32.680 --> 00:49:34.480
...food from the birds.
00:49:36.040 --> 00:49:39.560
You took oxygen from the world,
it is absurd.
00:49:40.320 --> 00:49:44.160
How can you tear a tree
that works for everyone?
00:49:45.880 --> 00:49:48.840
When you see what
has already been destroyed,...
00:49:51.400 --> 00:49:53.000
...how do you feel?
00:49:53.600 --> 00:49:56.360
Sometimes I feel
hatred towards people,...
00:49:57.760 --> 00:49:58.920
white people,...
00:50:01.240 --> 00:50:04.960
...towards foreigners
who come to exploit this place.
00:50:05.800 --> 00:50:10.720
I am a small woman,
but I have a big heart...
00:50:11.520 --> 00:50:15.280
...to fight
and defend the little ones.
00:50:16.640 --> 00:50:18.960
Because this is our house,...
00:50:19.720 --> 00:50:24.520
...those who rule here are us,
those who rule the jungle are us.
00:50:24.760 --> 00:50:27.600
We are indigenous
peoples, it is our home.
00:50:28.960 --> 00:50:30.840
Not anyone coming from cities...
00:50:33.560 --> 00:50:36.840
...who says we can\'t be here
because this is now theirs.
00:50:37.360 --> 00:50:43.000
It is a lack of respect,
as if we did not have feelings.
00:50:50.600 --> 00:50:54.640
I would like to tell the Chinese,
the Spaniards,...
00:50:54.680 --> 00:50:56.960
...the Germans,
the Canadians, the Austrians,...
00:50:57.000 --> 00:51:02.320
...all the developed countries,
that we have a life here.
00:51:04.680 --> 00:51:07.240
Before thinking
about material goods,...
00:51:10.240 --> 00:51:12.040
...think about us too.
00:51:13.240 --> 00:51:16.160
We only ask one thing:
leave us alone.
00:51:17.000 --> 00:51:20.680
Do not bring big projects
to destroy our territories.
00:51:21.520 --> 00:51:23.400
Your projects are death.
00:51:24.360 --> 00:51:27.880
The projects that you bring here
are killing us.
00:51:29.200 --> 00:51:32.640
You want to kill us,
but you will not get it...
00:51:34.840 --> 00:51:39.000
...because we are women,
we are the Munduruku people,...
00:51:39.760 --> 00:51:41.160
...we are warriors...
00:51:41.200 --> 00:51:44.080
...and we are going to fight
for our territory.
