View on the Pragda STREAM site

Salvador Allende (June 26, 1908 – September 11, 1973) was a Chilean physician, Marxist politician, and the first democratically elected socialist president in Latin America. Born into an upper-middle-class family in Valparaíso, he co-founded Chile's Socialist Party in 1933 and served in various political roles, including minister of health and senator. He won the presidency in 1970 as the leader of the Popular Unity coalition. His government implemented socialist reforms, including nationalizing industries, redistributing land, and expanding social programs.

Allende's policies faced opposition from domestic elites and foreign powers, particularly the U.S., which worked to destabilize his administration. Economic crises and political polarization escalated, culminating in a military coup on September 11, 1973, led by General Augusto Pinochet. During the coup, Allende died in the presidential palace. He remains a symbol of democratic socialism and resistance to imperialism worldwide.
