A journey to the heart of the flamenco music of Jorge Pardo, an essential artist to understand the evolution of contemporary flamenco.
For two years, director Emilio Belmonte and his team accompany the legendary flutist and saxophonist of Paco de Lucía's sextet on his travels around Spain and the world to meet exceptional musicians (Chick Corea, Niño Josele, Duquende, Ana Morales, and others) in order to organize a special concert, a show to be called Trance.
This flamenco road movie has exceptional musical moments and many difficulties for the master of flamenco-jazz fusion. Jorge Pardo's charisma, as well as his conception of art as life and life as art, are the driving force behind one of the most ambitious musical films of recent years.

00:00:19.039 --> 00:00:20.800
Thanks!
00:00:21.399 --> 00:00:22.199
Good evening everyone!
00:00:22.320 --> 00:00:26.920
Thank you for joining us
for this psychedelic moment.
00:00:27.039 --> 00:00:28.320
Again?
00:00:32.359 --> 00:00:35.759
Well, we've been playing for two hours.
00:01:29.879 --> 00:01:39.000
One night, I had a dream,
one of those that seem very real.
00:01:39.959 --> 00:01:46.120
I was boarding a plane
which was practically empty.
00:01:46.319 --> 00:01:49.599
My seat was the one
right next to Paco de Lucía.
00:01:49.599 --> 00:01:54.760
But I couldn't recognize the airplane,
it wasn't a normal plane.
00:02:01.920 --> 00:02:05.079
It was a strange plane...
00:02:05.200 --> 00:02:10.919
After a while I ask Paco:
Where are we going to do this concert?
00:02:11.000 --> 00:02:14.919
He said :
They didn't tell you? We're flying to the moon.
00:02:26.000 --> 00:02:30.520
A film by
Emilio BELMONTE
00:02:38.159 --> 00:02:42.479
AT 18, JORGE PARDO
MEETS PACO DE LUCÍA.
00:02:42.879 --> 00:02:47.479
HE FOLLOWED HIM FOR 20 YEARS,
AS A MEMBER OF HIS LEGENDARY
00:02:47.599 --> 00:02:52.080
SEXTET THAT CHANGED
THE HISTORY OF FLAMENCO.
00:02:53.080 --> 00:03:00.560
JORGE PARDO INTRODUCES NEW INSTRUMENTS
IN FLAMENCO, FLUTE AND SAXOPHONE.
00:03:00.919 --> 00:03:05.639
OVER THE LAST 40 YEARS, THE "MAESTRO"
OF FLAMENCO-JAZZ FUSION HAS REPRESENTED,
00:03:05.759 --> 00:03:10.800
THE EVOLUTION OF FLAMENCO CULTURE
MORE THAN ANYONE ELSE.
00:03:14.319 --> 00:03:16.840
Look,
I've got some pictures.
00:03:16.919 --> 00:03:20.039
I'm not usually a big collector.
00:03:20.199 --> 00:03:24.240
But sometimes I open the draws
and I find things.
00:03:24.360 --> 00:03:27.719
Look at this one with Paco.
00:03:27.960 --> 00:03:30.919
I have no idea what year it is.
00:03:31.039 --> 00:03:32.919
That's my dad.
00:03:35.400 --> 00:03:39.080
My brother must have taken them.
00:03:39.280 --> 00:03:40.840
That's me.
00:03:42.280 --> 00:03:44.479
A little younger.
00:03:46.560 --> 00:03:49.039
Look,
this one with Paco too.
00:03:49.879 --> 00:03:52.599
That was probably in Japan.
00:03:53.639 --> 00:03:56.800
Here I am, Rubem,
Joaquin Grilo.
00:03:57.280 --> 00:03:59.599
And Paco playing the clown.
00:04:16.839 --> 00:04:18.680
Hey, How's it going?
00:04:19.079 --> 00:04:22.040
It's very complicated, Jorge.
00:04:22.079 --> 00:04:28.759
How can I organize a concert
with only ten tickets sold?
00:04:28.800 --> 00:04:31.680
No joke,
is it really that bad?
00:04:31.720 --> 00:04:34.680
You deserve better
than a cheap show with 30 people.
00:04:34.720 --> 00:04:37.240
You're "Jorge Pardo",
you've sold out halls all your life.
00:04:37.480 --> 00:04:38.439
But what are you doing now?
00:04:38.759 --> 00:04:41.639
What is it?
Listen, it’s all about promotion, you know.
00:04:41.879 --> 00:04:45.000
It's not because
people don't like it.
00:04:45.120 --> 00:04:47.480
You’re telling to me
how to do my job?
00:04:47.600 --> 00:04:49.360
After all this time
that you've known me ?
00:04:49.439 --> 00:04:52.199
If people don't like something,
I can't sell it!
00:04:52.279 --> 00:04:53.920
I'm not a magician.
00:04:54.720 --> 00:04:59.879
I'm not the kind of person who does
what people like.
00:05:00.199 --> 00:05:05.120
I've always played things that I liked,
that's the idea.
00:05:05.240 --> 00:05:09.959
No matter if I'm playing at Carnegie Hall
or in a little club, I don’t care.
00:05:32.000 --> 00:05:33.519
Thank you very much, good evening.
00:05:35.519 --> 00:05:38.639
The song that you're going
to hear is the very first one
00:05:38.759 --> 00:05:40.439
that I learned from the singer Camaron.
00:05:40.600 --> 00:05:45.000
It was dedicated to a woman
he admired a lot.
00:05:45.160 --> 00:05:47.480
“The Pearl of Cadiz.”
00:07:48.279 --> 00:07:52.160
To express the pain, the cry,
you have to live it, you have to feel it.
00:07:53.800 --> 00:07:57.839
There's no book or method to learn it,
it's a live learning experience.
00:08:02.600 --> 00:08:06.680
As I was in that environment
I realized
00:08:07.279 --> 00:08:12.240
that my flute and saxophone could play
these songs like no other instrument.
00:08:13.720 --> 00:08:21.360
I felt that life had put me in the right place
to say something different.
00:08:23.519 --> 00:08:28.160
So that you can bend,
lament, break a note
00:08:28.439 --> 00:08:32.159
with my instruments
just like a singer would.
00:08:40.919 --> 00:08:43.240
It's Pedro's rooster.
00:08:44.360 --> 00:08:49.600
The one that wakes me up
at five in the morning.
00:09:23.600 --> 00:09:28.120
It's just the opposite:
I'm telling you I don't care what you do.
00:09:28.399 --> 00:09:32.639
I never wanted you to be a musician,
as long as you did something you liked.
00:09:32.799 --> 00:09:35.120
The problem is...
00:09:35.480 --> 00:09:37.919
- You told me yourself…
- Told you what ?
00:09:38.200 --> 00:09:41.679
Since I'm not a musician.
00:09:41.720 --> 00:09:43.399
That I don't give you
enough attention.
00:09:43.559 --> 00:09:47.759
It's true that you pay more
attention to the young musicians
00:09:47.879 --> 00:09:50.639
who play with you than
you pay attention to me.
00:09:52.399 --> 00:09:57.279
It's not a question
of paying attention or not.
00:09:57.519 --> 00:10:01.080
It's just that they’re colleagues.
00:10:01.120 --> 00:10:02.360
- Music colleagues
- Exactly!
00:10:02.399 --> 00:10:04.080
I fucking know that,
I know that.
00:10:04.120 --> 00:10:07.240
The same way you have yours
with whom you have a certain complicity.
00:10:07.480 --> 00:10:11.879
- And no matter if they're 17 or 50.
- I know.
00:10:13.519 --> 00:10:14.600
But, anyway...
00:10:17.320 --> 00:10:22.639
Maybe I should have been more strict
with you about music.
00:10:22.799 --> 00:10:26.279
But whether for the piano
or for the guitar,
00:10:26.399 --> 00:10:29.919
it was never the right time,
you never wanted to.
00:10:31.240 --> 00:10:35.360
You'd disappear for months
when you were on tour with Paco.
00:10:35.399 --> 00:10:38.159
You were never at home,
so I didn't have a point of reference.
00:10:38.639 --> 00:10:41.720
« Miguel, do this or don't do that. »
00:10:41.840 --> 00:10:44.720
There was also some kind of pact,
00:10:45.759 --> 00:10:51.440
« Do not mix what happened at home
and what happened outside. »
00:11:01.879 --> 00:11:07.919
I remember when you were sending postcards
from Chicago, Los Angeles...
00:11:09.080 --> 00:11:13.360
We'd run to the living room
to answer the phone when you were calling.
00:11:15.080 --> 00:11:18.759
Fuck, there must be an
eight-hour time difference.
00:11:18.960 --> 00:11:22.480
For me it was completely crazy.
00:11:27.879 --> 00:11:35.240
I don't know if I'm a famous artist,
or a respected one.
00:11:38.759 --> 00:11:46.159
On the other hand, I need recognition
to be able to continue to keep my freedom
00:11:46.639 --> 00:11:49.759
and give the audience
the best part of me.
00:11:51.679 --> 00:11:55.159
I've never been interested
to be a star.
00:11:55.360 --> 00:12:00.360
What I want the public to know
about me is the music.
00:14:10.799 --> 00:14:15.159
There's no better project than this one,
it doesn't exist.
00:14:15.879 --> 00:14:17.200
That’s true.
00:14:20.200 --> 00:14:22.919
We got into this together.
00:14:23.120 --> 00:14:27.360
When the project was born,
I loved this "electro" style.
00:14:27.840 --> 00:14:33.440
But we could go back
to the guitar, double bass, clapping.
00:14:33.879 --> 00:14:35.759
That's what everyone's doing now.
00:14:36.000 --> 00:14:42.720
Precisely, they're all doing what you invented,
and we're not taking advantage of it!
00:14:47.919 --> 00:14:49.320
What?
00:14:51.399 --> 00:14:54.480
- Am I supposed to give you courage?
- No, you don't.
00:14:54.559 --> 00:14:56.320
It should be the opposite.
00:14:56.399 --> 00:15:01.000
It’s been three years
that we’ve had this "electro" project.
00:15:01.159 --> 00:15:02.679
We released two records.
00:15:02.799 --> 00:15:08.039
Yet, we haven't been able
to break through.
00:15:08.159 --> 00:15:14.360
We didn't succeed to get into
another kind of scene,
00:15:14.480 --> 00:15:16.360
outside jazz and flamenco.
00:15:17.039 --> 00:15:22.240
Like a more "general" festival
or an electronic music festival.
00:15:22.519 --> 00:15:25.399
What we have is what we have.
00:15:25.840 --> 00:15:28.840
I'm not gonna start
worrying about that.
00:15:29.879 --> 00:15:33.320
But it’s still something to consider,
00:15:34.120 --> 00:15:37.240
we don't have anything
more going with that band.
00:15:37.440 --> 00:15:43.000
Since we've had this group,
it's the first time, in a very long time,
00:15:43.080 --> 00:15:47.799
that we've got nothing to look forward to.
00:15:54.360 --> 00:15:56.279
What can we do about it.
00:17:19.359 --> 00:17:23.960
That tune, I took it from one of yours,
El Torta!
00:17:24.839 --> 00:17:26.279
Is that right or not?
00:19:21.920 --> 00:19:26.680
Flamenco started to grow with you,
with Paco de Lucía.
00:19:26.839 --> 00:19:30.279
I tell you sincerely,
and that's what's most important.
00:19:30.519 --> 00:19:33.240
Because their time has now passed.
00:19:34.000 --> 00:19:37.319
They did the most important,
they put down the foundations.
00:19:37.720 --> 00:19:40.799
Now it's important
that flamenco opens up to the world.
00:19:40.920 --> 00:19:43.960
And you all,
and more precisely you, "Maestro".
00:19:46.119 --> 00:19:50.680
You have no idea
how much you carry us.
00:19:51.200 --> 00:19:54.480
Because we recognize
you as the great "Maestro"
00:19:54.599 --> 00:19:57.200
and a great flamenco musician!
00:19:57.359 --> 00:19:59.319
Let me tell him something.
00:19:59.640 --> 00:20:02.160
You're the guardian of our music!
00:20:02.559 --> 00:20:03.880
I am telling you.
00:20:11.680 --> 00:20:15.119
God gave the same to both of them.
00:20:16.599 --> 00:20:18.640
My goodness...
00:20:19.880 --> 00:20:23.359
What bad manners!
00:20:24.359 --> 00:20:28.119
Bad manners...
00:20:28.960 --> 00:20:32.119
I've never had them.
00:20:32.519 --> 00:20:36.720
And God save me from having them.
00:20:37.039 --> 00:20:38.640
I never had them.
00:20:38.880 --> 00:20:43.440
And God save me from having them.
00:20:51.440 --> 00:20:58.440
Tonight I'm the one who decides,
tomorrow it'll be anyone's choice.
00:21:04.079 --> 00:21:09.920
Tonight it's me who decides,
tomorrow it'll be anyone's choice.
00:21:10.680 --> 00:21:13.359
Tomorrow decides who wants
00:21:13.440 --> 00:21:19.359
Tonight I'll hoist my flag
on every street.
00:21:19.440 --> 00:21:27.640
I have my bag full
full of flowers.
00:21:36.480 --> 00:21:39.000
Jerez is The rhythm.
00:21:40.759 --> 00:21:47.799
This precious treasure is kept safe
by the Flamenco families.
00:21:52.599 --> 00:21:55.680
It's a children's game
pushed to the point of virtuosity.
00:21:57.200 --> 00:22:01.319
Jerez is deep and light at the same time.
00:22:03.039 --> 00:22:06.440
The young look old,
the old look young.
00:22:06.519 --> 00:22:08.319
All in a merry chaos.
00:22:34.960 --> 00:22:37.720
All the purity is a forgotten mixture.
00:22:38.440 --> 00:22:42.920
It is said to be pure because,
we have forgotten its origins.
00:22:43.039 --> 00:22:47.440
But it's clear that when
you look deep into flamenco,
00:22:47.480 --> 00:22:52.200
its origins, just like jazz,
are a blend of styles.
00:22:52.240 --> 00:22:56.480
We find Berber rhythms,
African polyrhythms, 3 beat rhythms.
00:22:56.559 --> 00:23:02.359
There are Sephardic songs,
many of them also come from old folklore.
00:23:02.759 --> 00:23:06.240
And, of course,
we find the Gypsies' touch.
00:23:09.279 --> 00:23:14.480
That incredible taste of the gypsies
to do things with brio.
00:23:14.599 --> 00:23:18.680
This capacity to be
at ease with beautiful things.
00:23:18.759 --> 00:23:22.759
Without the Gypsies,
we couldn't talk about flamenco.
00:23:51.920 --> 00:23:54.880
- It was my own son who told me that.
- That you're already old?
00:23:54.880 --> 00:23:59.559
Yes, he told me:
Dad, you're completely has-been.
00:24:01.119 --> 00:24:05.519
Because flamenco...
00:24:07.079 --> 00:24:10.680
They're bringing it forward,
with weird notes.
00:24:14.160 --> 00:24:22.480
Yes, we'll see what
they do with it in 20 or 30 years.
00:24:22.680 --> 00:24:30.200
We'll see, but one thing is fundamental:
It is from the root that the olive tree is born.
00:24:33.319 --> 00:24:36.440
Here we are,
in the neighborhood of 3000.
00:24:36.680 --> 00:24:40.240
Well, we live here,
gleefully.
00:24:40.319 --> 00:24:46.920
You've lived in five-star hotels,
all over the world, in luxury.
00:24:47.240 --> 00:24:52.319
- But for you, luxury is this.
- Absolutely, being here and with my family.
00:24:52.839 --> 00:24:55.599
And making sure everything runs well here.
00:24:56.079 --> 00:24:58.400
That's important, too.
00:24:58.599 --> 00:25:04.759
Knowing that you can transmit to young people,
everything you've learned.
00:25:05.720 --> 00:25:10.119
And to know that you're helping
to make things better for people here.
00:25:10.240 --> 00:25:18.160
Exactly, it's very important to instill
some values to the children here.
00:25:21.319 --> 00:25:25.960
Respect, discipline,
the value of things.
00:25:26.200 --> 00:25:28.160
It's not that easy.
00:25:28.519 --> 00:25:32.319
And also make sure
to provide them means.
00:25:32.400 --> 00:25:36.599
To give them prospects, too.
interesting futures.
00:25:39.720 --> 00:25:42.000
Look, there's the rooster.
00:25:46.319 --> 00:25:49.000
How is that rooster, huh?
00:25:51.759 --> 00:25:55.559
“Let him film it", that's all right with me.
You know that not everybody can film here.
00:25:55.720 --> 00:25:59.960
"Let him film" he says, that's great!
that's great!
00:26:05.319 --> 00:26:08.480
Let's go say hello.
00:26:22.680 --> 00:26:25.559
Lol take our picture.
00:26:56.480 --> 00:26:58.839
That's my Jorge!
00:26:59.000 --> 00:27:01.240
Visiting the
"Las 3000" neighborhood.
00:27:18.440 --> 00:27:19.920
Hi, Rycardo.
00:27:20.880 --> 00:27:25.279
Do you think we’re going to party tonight?
Will the charm work?
00:27:28.319 --> 00:27:31.039
Well, I have to go,
the train's coming.
00:27:31.279 --> 00:27:33.839
I'm ready for tonight, no doubt.
00:29:19.759 --> 00:29:20.920
Cheers to you Jorge.
00:29:21.119 --> 00:29:22.960
Guaranteed vintage.
00:29:24.240 --> 00:29:27.400
My grandfather used to tell me that,
00:29:27.599 --> 00:29:34.720
they were put in the barracks
where horses had been kept a few days before.
00:29:35.200 --> 00:29:39.440
They used antiseptic,
to kill insects and germs.
00:29:39.599 --> 00:29:43.079
And gave each family a sheet.
00:29:43.160 --> 00:29:47.359
The sheets were arranged
as to keep the families apart.
00:29:47.400 --> 00:29:49.279
They could even be fifty families.
00:29:49.319 --> 00:29:53.440
Just gypsies,
all living in hangars.
00:29:53.680 --> 00:29:56.319
Separated by a single sheet.
00:29:56.839 --> 00:29:59.599
And so you can understand that
00:29:59.640 --> 00:30:03.480
on rainy days,
no one went to work in the rice paddies.
00:30:03.960 --> 00:30:06.759
On these days
they would meet and party.
00:30:07.240 --> 00:30:11.640
Sometimes they even invented weddings.
00:30:12.960 --> 00:30:18.759
Hey you, "You're going to marry him",
they dressed the couple and took them on their shoulders.
00:30:18.920 --> 00:30:22.799
it was completely tribal.
00:30:48.240 --> 00:30:52.559
When I wake up in the morning,
I have lyrics that come back to me.
00:30:52.680 --> 00:30:56.160
Lyrics that my grandmother
used to sing to me.
00:30:56.359 --> 00:31:00.279
And this past echos in me all the time.
00:31:05.519 --> 00:31:08.480
My flamenco is infused with it.
00:31:10.519 --> 00:31:17.240
Some people find that my music
is dark sometimes.
00:31:17.680 --> 00:31:20.799
That's because I'm looking for that darkness.
00:31:21.599 --> 00:31:28.160
The Solea that is played in Lebrija is not "pretty".
It's a Solea that hurts.
00:31:30.480 --> 00:31:34.599
God is going to punish you.
00:31:34.720 --> 00:31:42.119
God is going to punish you.
00:31:42.240 --> 00:31:47.079
You will love someone
who doesn't love you.
00:31:47.680 --> 00:31:53.880
That was my case with you.
00:31:54.279 --> 00:31:59.039
You will love someone
who doesn't love you.
00:31:59.519 --> 00:32:05.400
That was my case with you.
00:32:06.160 --> 00:32:11.519
I have a huge pain,
00:32:11.680 --> 00:32:17.519
it will follow me to my death
and I will tell no one.
00:32:17.720 --> 00:32:24.880
And I will tell no one.
00:32:40.680 --> 00:32:42.160
Jorge, it's me.
00:32:42.279 --> 00:32:45.880
I'm trying to call you,
but you're not answering.
00:32:46.279 --> 00:32:49.839
You must be working
or you’re busy, I don't know.
00:32:52.359 --> 00:32:56.559
I've been calling you for days
and you just canceled our weekend.
00:32:59.119 --> 00:33:02.839
You could at least
give me an explanation.
00:33:03.279 --> 00:33:07.440
Or at least tell me what's going on.
I have a life to organize.
00:33:08.440 --> 00:33:12.039
We've been planning this for a long time.
00:33:12.119 --> 00:33:17.039
And now you stand me up
without an explanation or anything.
00:33:23.920 --> 00:33:29.519
We need more complicity,
otherwise don't get yourself into a relationship.
00:33:31.599 --> 00:33:35.480
I don't think I'm too intrusive.
I don't get into your business.
00:33:35.640 --> 00:33:40.559
I respect concerts
and tours and all that goes with it, but...
00:33:41.119 --> 00:33:45.200
But...
But I think you're going too far.
00:33:46.559 --> 00:33:49.119
I don’t think it can work any longer.
00:35:19.800 --> 00:35:25.880
The Pamplona Flamenco Festival
didn't give us any answers.
00:35:27.920 --> 00:35:29.880
Well, we'll see about that later.
00:35:30.000 --> 00:35:36.159
Next, we've got a proposal for
an "exceptional" concert in a festival.
00:35:36.280 --> 00:35:40.679
A flamenco meeting
with your musician friends
00:35:40.960 --> 00:35:45.360
Focusing on the flamenco-jazz fusion
of which you are considered…
00:35:47.199 --> 00:35:49.440
« Founding father ».
00:35:49.519 --> 00:35:53.480
It's not a tribute.
I know you wouldn't like that.
00:35:53.480 --> 00:35:57.519
It's something we disagree about,
although I'd be interested.
00:36:01.280 --> 00:36:05.559
It is a great opportunity to be in the spotlight
with a "special" gig.
00:36:07.159 --> 00:36:12.880
To attract attention with a title like:
"Jorge Pardon Reunion"... "& friends
00:36:13.000 --> 00:36:15.519
"World flamenco jazz",
that kind of thing...
00:36:15.679 --> 00:36:18.800
Come on, let's do it.
It's dynamite!
00:37:33.760 --> 00:37:37.960
I know that my intuition
has always been an excellent guide.
00:37:38.679 --> 00:37:45.599
Maybe this concert proposal is a sign
to take a new way.
00:37:45.639 --> 00:37:48.679
A way full of challenges and surprises.
00:37:50.079 --> 00:37:57.320
A new opportunity
to keep believing in art, and life as art.
00:44:03.079 --> 00:44:06.840
Such peace, man, such tranquility.
00:44:09.480 --> 00:44:12.920
Yeah, until we arrived.
00:44:13.280 --> 00:44:16.280
And we make a fucking mess.
00:44:18.119 --> 00:44:20.679
Do you have any projects?
00:44:21.360 --> 00:44:28.440
Well, it's a good thing you ask me,
I’ve got something for you.
00:44:28.960 --> 00:44:31.840
Be careful,
I could say yes.
00:44:32.360 --> 00:44:40.400
I've been approached to organize
a kind of special concert.
00:44:43.320 --> 00:44:47.920
And I want you
to be part of it man.
00:44:48.320 --> 00:44:53.599
I think there's about
$50,000 per artist.
00:44:53.760 --> 00:44:56.440
That's cheap!
00:44:56.679 --> 00:44:58.400
However, we must schedule rehearsals.
00:44:58.519 --> 00:45:02.519
So there's a large cake to share,
this is rare these days.
00:45:02.800 --> 00:45:06.840
You know that with me
there's always money.
00:45:09.800 --> 00:45:13.239
- The projet's going to be called "Trance".
- Trance? Damn!
00:45:13.599 --> 00:45:17.000
- That's all?
- Trance all the way!
00:45:17.320 --> 00:45:22.320
That's the feeling
that I pursue every moment.
00:45:22.559 --> 00:45:25.159
When you are talking to someone
00:45:25.519 --> 00:45:28.719
or when you are looking
at a beautiful landscape...
00:45:29.039 --> 00:45:32.079
That emotion that makes you
free yourself from the world,
00:45:32.239 --> 00:45:33.920
from whether this is good or bad,
00:45:34.039 --> 00:45:36.320
from always judging:
00:45:36.400 --> 00:45:39.000
Am I right or am I wrong?
Is this right or is that wrong?
00:45:39.159 --> 00:45:40.639
Yes or no?
00:45:40.760 --> 00:45:41.880
Fuck it!
00:45:42.320 --> 00:45:44.239
Neither yes or no,
neither right or wrong.
00:45:44.360 --> 00:45:45.440
You abandon yourself!
00:45:45.559 --> 00:45:48.039
And you jump into the deep end
00:45:48.880 --> 00:45:51.960
without thinking about anything else,
if you play a D or a F.
00:45:54.039 --> 00:45:57.920
At that moment you free yourself,
and that is the trance.
00:45:58.119 --> 00:46:00.119
If you get good artists it'll be great.
00:46:00.280 --> 00:46:02.119
So that's the concept
00:46:02.320 --> 00:46:04.639
You can count on me,
I want to be there.
00:46:05.079 --> 00:46:07.840
Excellent!
I knew I could rely on you.
00:46:25.679 --> 00:46:28.760
I was a teenager when
I fell in love with jazz.
00:46:28.920 --> 00:46:30.639
Its crazy rhythms.
00:46:30.639 --> 00:46:33.679
The freedom that interpreters transmitted.
00:46:34.119 --> 00:46:37.199
I learned a lot from its human vocation
00:46:37.800 --> 00:46:41.440
and its ability to break down
cultural boundaries.
00:46:42.039 --> 00:46:46.559
All of which Chick knows well
and contributed greatly to it.
00:48:32.320 --> 00:48:36.079
You'd think there'd be a big difference
between jazz and flamenco.
00:48:36.400 --> 00:48:41.079
Yet in the end,
they have a lot in common.
00:48:41.719 --> 00:48:46.400
Like bringing what's elitist to the popular,
and vice versa.
00:48:51.000 --> 00:48:54.440
Obviously the cult of rhythm, the swing,
00:48:55.440 --> 00:48:58.000
the groove, the "soniquete",
the magic of the "duende",
00:48:58.119 --> 00:48:59.920
or the mystery of the blues.
00:49:02.159 --> 00:49:06.039
The love of the imperfect note,
impure, but so full of meaning.
00:52:58.199 --> 00:53:04.159
I met Paco in the halls
of the Phillips record company.
00:53:05.159 --> 00:53:08.639
I was about 18 or 19.
00:53:10.239 --> 00:53:12.559
One day, Paco came along.
00:53:12.639 --> 00:53:17.119
He was recording the album
"Paco de Lucía plays Manuel de Falla."
00:53:17.320 --> 00:53:20.320
He said to us: " Would you like to come
and improvise on it? »
00:53:20.559 --> 00:53:23.480
Of course we went there,
and that's how it all started.
00:53:48.519 --> 00:53:54.000
I didn't belong
to any flamenco family.
00:53:54.360 --> 00:53:56.880
I had no connection with
this flamenco world.
00:53:56.920 --> 00:53:58.840
I loved this music
but as an amateur.
00:54:00.840 --> 00:54:05.320
And of course,
to be with someone like that,
00:54:05.480 --> 00:54:08.360
that opens the big flamenco book for you.
00:54:09.320 --> 00:54:16.960
For me it's been the best learning.
00:55:49.119 --> 00:55:50.519
Hey Angel, what's up?
00:55:51.039 --> 00:55:54.719
I'm in Paris with Duquende
and Diego del Morao.
00:55:56.320 --> 00:55:59.960
I'm going to see if I can
tell them about the concert,
00:56:00.119 --> 00:56:01.920
to take them on board with us.
00:56:03.840 --> 00:56:09.639
Despite the love I had for him.
00:56:11.639 --> 00:56:17.480
Despite the love I had for him.
00:56:17.639 --> 00:56:23.239
Paco de Lucía is gone forever.
00:56:23.320 --> 00:56:31.639
He is gone forever.
00:56:34.360 --> 00:56:36.719
And I'll be in Seville next week.
00:56:36.840 --> 00:56:40.639
I'm going to try to see Farruquito
and Ana Morales.
00:56:42.679 --> 00:56:48.000
I would love it if they could come so that
we can have some dance.
00:56:48.079 --> 00:56:51.239
We will see if they are available.
01:00:38.800 --> 01:00:41.280
I'm staying more days
over here in the end.
01:00:41.400 --> 01:00:42.119
Really?
01:00:42.320 --> 01:00:45.639
Yes, because next week
I have more work to do.
01:00:46.800 --> 01:00:49.360
It's not worth leaving
and coming back again.
01:00:49.519 --> 01:00:51.079
I'm already here...
01:00:52.760 --> 01:00:57.119
In the end I'm going to have to
come and live here, with so much...
01:00:57.400 --> 01:00:59.000
So much castings.
01:00:59.440 --> 01:01:01.280
Well...
01:01:03.719 --> 01:01:06.679
I'm not going to stop you.
01:01:07.119 --> 01:01:10.719
But I'm not going to
encourage you.
01:01:12.800 --> 01:01:15.039
You know my life.
01:01:15.360 --> 01:01:20.159
One day here, one day there.
I'm everywhere.
01:01:20.440 --> 01:01:27.440
Unfortunately, I can't
offer you anything else...
01:01:28.159 --> 01:01:30.079
you don't already know.
01:01:32.719 --> 01:01:37.360
I live here in Madrid
but I'm away a lot.
01:01:37.639 --> 01:01:40.639
I won't be here all the time either.
01:01:41.000 --> 01:01:47.559
I'll be in Madrid most of the time,
but I'll be working also in Barcelona.
01:01:48.079 --> 01:01:50.360
I'm going to spend
the whole summer there.
01:01:51.440 --> 01:01:57.039
I'm starting to get work in Paris,
I have an agent looking after me there.
01:01:57.239 --> 01:02:01.800
So you see,
I'm not going to be clingy...
01:02:02.760 --> 01:02:04.119
All the time.
01:02:05.599 --> 01:02:09.159
Well,
obviously things are clear for you.
01:02:09.599 --> 01:02:12.039
For me yes, but not for you?
01:02:12.440 --> 01:02:16.440
Clearly, it's the life I am living
01:02:16.639 --> 01:02:21.840
and I don't want it to be a problem.
01:02:27.320 --> 01:02:28.960
To be frustrating.
01:02:29.400 --> 01:02:31.719
Even for me.
01:02:40.679 --> 01:02:42.599
He's in the back on the right.
01:02:46.519 --> 01:02:50.440
Damn it, Nino,
it's crazy to see you here.
01:02:50.639 --> 01:02:52.079
It's so good to see you here, man.
01:02:52.880 --> 01:02:55.360
We're with you, we're in the hall.
Have fun.
01:02:55.519 --> 01:02:57.559
I brought the flute in case.
01:03:15.960 --> 01:03:19.400
Lights of Madrid
01:03:20.400 --> 01:03:23.960
have always fascinated
artists from all horizons.
01:03:24.880 --> 01:03:28.519
Even though the fishpond
has always been in Andalusia.
01:03:29.760 --> 01:03:32.320
Madrid has received Flamenco
artists from everywhere
01:03:33.119 --> 01:03:39.480
looking for a future
and maybe accomplish their dreams.
01:03:48.920 --> 01:03:52.079
Success in Madrid creates
a lot of job opportunities:
01:03:52.880 --> 01:03:59.159
There's the music companies,
the media, the audience.
01:03:59.880 --> 01:04:03.480
So, everything is here:
the dream of every flamenco artist.
01:05:39.400 --> 01:05:42.159
You're dressed like a real gypsy!
01:05:48.880 --> 01:05:51.079
Well Pepe, what's the state of flamenco?
01:05:51.159 --> 01:05:55.960
You're still a kid,
but you've got some perspective.
01:05:56.280 --> 01:05:58.199
Don't call me "the old man" yet...
01:05:58.599 --> 01:06:02.559
- Could you imagine we'd be here one day?
- Never.
01:06:02.760 --> 01:06:06.920
All the travel, the fusion, the jazz,
musical meetings.
01:06:07.039 --> 01:06:10.159
I never could have imagined it, Jorge.
01:06:10.840 --> 01:06:11.960
I really couldn't.
01:06:13.360 --> 01:06:18.000
We've opened a door, and today...
01:06:18.880 --> 01:06:25.519
To be here with these
three giants that you are.
01:06:25.960 --> 01:06:30.440
All young, the only one who’s on the wane is me,
but don't say anything to anyone.
01:06:30.639 --> 01:06:35.599
Well, you know we're all at the end.
01:06:58.480 --> 01:07:03.639
Are we all at war with industry?
What's the problem?
01:07:04.280 --> 01:07:07.039
Maybe they don't like us
or we don't like them.
01:07:07.199 --> 01:07:09.400
I don't think
we have much to complain about.
01:07:09.480 --> 01:07:13.119
We're the only ones
who can do what we do.
01:07:13.159 --> 01:07:17.800
We are not accountable to anyone.
01:07:17.880 --> 01:07:23.039
When we play somewhere, I don't even know
what my line-up is going to be, I don't know!
01:07:23.360 --> 01:07:27.039
Freedom,
the industry doesn't like it.
01:07:27.159 --> 01:07:31.199
Anyway, the media doesn't cover
things as much as they should.
01:07:31.320 --> 01:07:35.920
They don't make the difference
between culture and fun anymore.
01:07:36.280 --> 01:07:39.199
It's not culture that's being given to us.
01:08:31.079 --> 01:08:35.960
When I listen to Jorge, to Tio Pepe,
Caramelo or you, of course.
01:08:37.479 --> 01:08:41.079
there's an identity,
and I think that is what it is.
01:08:41.560 --> 01:08:43.560
Everyone can tell their own story.
01:08:43.640 --> 01:08:47.720
And a story can be told in a thousand ways,
with words, or with notes.
01:08:49.159 --> 01:08:50.560
Health and freedom.
01:09:07.119 --> 01:09:10.439
Listen, about this concert in June...
01:09:10.560 --> 01:09:14.000
Look, I'm calling people.
I'm really getting into it.
01:09:14.279 --> 01:09:16.199
They are all good friends of mine.
01:09:16.319 --> 01:09:19.399
I think I'm going to lose
my friendship with some of them,
01:09:19.479 --> 01:09:22.039
because at some point
I’ll have to tell them:
01:09:22.199 --> 01:09:24.920
Hey, look, this is the money we have,
There is no more.
01:09:25.199 --> 01:09:29.640
Because, you also always
have to struggle with money.
01:09:29.800 --> 01:09:33.239
I don't know if one day I'll have,
one glorious day,
01:09:33.600 --> 01:09:37.319
I'll have a good budget to do
something worthy in my life.
01:09:37.520 --> 01:09:40.199
Because everything is just getting by,
getting by and getting by...
01:09:40.439 --> 01:09:42.399
And I want to keep
doing my music,
01:09:42.560 --> 01:09:44.960
the music I do today.
01:09:45.399 --> 01:09:47.600
What comes to my mind now.
01:09:47.760 --> 01:09:51.560
I also find that people
want the things of yesterday.
01:09:51.720 --> 01:09:57.199
They like the bread baked
the day before, from last week...
01:09:57.560 --> 01:09:59.119
But why is this?
01:09:59.359 --> 01:10:04.520
They don't trust you
for what you're doing today.
01:10:05.159 --> 01:10:07.560
So you’re burdened with this.
01:10:07.680 --> 01:10:11.239
They trust you for what you
did 20 years ago, deal with it.
01:10:11.640 --> 01:10:15.000
But they don't believe in
what you are fucking doing now!
01:10:15.640 --> 01:10:19.279
Well, I feel poisonned with that.
01:10:22.239 --> 01:10:24.840
Let's meet up and have some aperitif
or whatever, right?
01:10:25.199 --> 01:10:28.560
It's not all going to be hardships.
01:10:29.239 --> 01:10:31.640
Let's have a good time.
01:10:31.880 --> 01:10:34.319
Well, buddy, take care of yourself.
01:10:34.760 --> 01:10:36.399
Come on, see you.
01:11:17.840 --> 01:11:21.119
When you start making music,
01:11:21.560 --> 01:11:24.920
it's not about,
01:11:25.520 --> 01:11:29.960
being famous or making money.
01:11:33.159 --> 01:11:42.199
It's to enter the world of the invisible,
the immaterial, whitch transcends you.
01:11:47.800 --> 01:11:50.399
I think the first musicians were healers.
01:11:51.640 --> 01:11:56.399
Some of them still are.
maybe we all are.
01:11:57.520 --> 01:12:02.199
When people experience an emotion,
it's healthy for their spirit, for their soul.
01:12:03.319 --> 01:12:09.079
Unfortunately
all that has changed today.
01:12:09.920 --> 01:12:12.359
Today we talk about showbiz
where everything is measured.
01:12:12.560 --> 01:12:18.239
We know how much each person earns,
who is the most successful.
01:12:20.479 --> 01:12:26.680
And all these things of showbiz
make us forget what’s essential:
01:12:27.640 --> 01:12:30.720
The link between the music and the spirit.
01:19:28.319 --> 01:19:32.119
- How's New York?
- I'm on the road every day with my little harp.
01:19:32.640 --> 01:19:35.439
Getting on trains and moving everywhere.
01:19:36.239 --> 01:19:38.119
It's just like that.
01:19:38.279 --> 01:19:43.720
I'm trying to prove that you can use
the harp in any kind of music.
01:19:44.239 --> 01:19:48.399
You've given your instrument wings,
you can do anything with it.
01:19:48.560 --> 01:19:50.720
you can even do flamenco!
01:19:50.760 --> 01:19:54.880
Great, I've loved flamenco since high school.
01:19:55.439 --> 01:20:00.560
Yes, I'm always curious to see how
the harp works in all styles.
01:20:01.760 --> 01:20:05.439
I'm gonna try to bring together
a lot of Flamenco's artists.
01:20:05.479 --> 01:20:10.880
And a maximum of musicians
that I've met in the last few months.
01:20:11.800 --> 01:20:16.000
Subramaniam,
Diego del Morao...
01:20:18.039 --> 01:20:20.000
Where do I sign?
01:20:20.239 --> 01:20:22.439
So, Edmar,
you have to be there.
01:20:22.520 --> 01:20:24.680
Great, it's an honor.
01:20:24.880 --> 01:20:28.960
We're going to do this concert
with all these musicians
01:20:29.119 --> 01:20:31.359
and we're getting into a trance,
it's gonna be crazy.
01:20:52.560 --> 01:20:55.039
I have traveled all over the United States.
01:20:55.439 --> 01:20:57.520
Of the USA I've seen...
01:20:58.439 --> 01:20:59.520
Everything!
01:21:00.760 --> 01:21:02.159
With Paco de Lucía?
01:21:02.319 --> 01:21:03.760
With Paco de Lucia and Chick Corea.
01:22:20.119 --> 01:22:21.560
Hi Angel.
01:22:21.600 --> 01:22:24.000
I'm still in Brooklyn.
01:22:24.800 --> 01:22:27.960
It's freezing cold, we've even got snow.
01:22:28.680 --> 01:22:31.800
Nothing special, the recordings went well.
01:22:31.880 --> 01:22:34.800
But damn it,
I read your messages and...
01:22:35.119 --> 01:22:37.439
I can't ask them like this.
01:22:37.720 --> 01:22:45.600
But worse than that,
I'm inviting them without a date.
01:22:45.680 --> 01:22:49.359
It used to be May,
now it's June but I don't know the day.
01:22:49.520 --> 01:22:52.159
They're all overbooked.
01:22:52.479 --> 01:22:55.760
And even if they're in,
it could come down in flames
01:22:55.920 --> 01:22:59.640
if we don't solve the question
of the date and the budget.
01:23:00.720 --> 01:23:03.920
Anyway, don't put pressure on me.
01:23:04.079 --> 01:23:07.000
Just let me know how it goes,
as soon as possible.
01:23:07.800 --> 01:23:10.920
Well, I hope everything's all right there, hug.
01:23:33.239 --> 01:23:36.279
We have to stop going in circles.
01:23:36.640 --> 01:23:38.800
From the 12th to the 16th.
01:23:39.359 --> 01:23:42.239
Who should I call?
Who do you have to call?
01:23:42.359 --> 01:23:44.920
And we see who's coming, that's all.
01:23:45.119 --> 01:23:49.880
Let's divide up the guest list.
01:23:50.079 --> 01:23:56.119
Otherwise you invite them directly.
01:23:56.199 --> 01:23:58.119
I've already seen them all
01:23:58.239 --> 01:24:03.119
they know about the concert,
they know they're invited.
01:24:03.399 --> 01:24:06.039
Yeah, but we have to get
on with it, Jorge, and fast.
01:24:06.279 --> 01:24:10.399
Now! And I'm still here
with a list that's not clear.
01:24:10.479 --> 01:24:16.760
We need to split up tasks,
see who can and can't, and clear it up this week.
01:24:17.279 --> 01:24:22.560
I don't want to put pressure on you,
it wouldn't be productive.
01:24:22.640 --> 01:24:24.960
It is not a symphony orchestra either.
01:24:25.199 --> 01:24:28.520
There are twenty names,
so twenty phone calls to make.
01:24:28.720 --> 01:24:32.039
There may be twenty names,
but there won't be twenty artists on stage.
01:24:32.720 --> 01:24:35.119
But that's what I've planned.
01:24:36.119 --> 01:24:39.800
We'll have what you see there.
01:24:40.119 --> 01:24:42.399
Ok, we'll see.
01:24:42.960 --> 01:24:46.279
I hope we can make it,
and luck be with us.
01:24:46.359 --> 01:24:47.680
Of course we will.
01:24:48.319 --> 01:24:49.640
As usual.
01:25:28.279 --> 01:25:32.279
I'm very happy to join you in Madrid.
01:25:32.359 --> 01:25:36.479
And to share this moment
with all the Maestros, there.
01:25:36.560 --> 01:25:38.279
A real gift...
01:25:39.600 --> 01:25:41.840
I've got the tracks, they're great.
01:25:42.359 --> 01:25:46.760
I can't wait to meet you in Madrid.
01:25:46.920 --> 01:25:51.960
I'm gonna love playing the Bulerías,
Ole!
01:25:52.159 --> 01:25:56.159
I'd love to be there, but it's bad timing.
01:25:56.359 --> 01:26:01.079
You know I'm with you with all my heart.
01:26:02.079 --> 01:26:07.000
I give you a big kiss,
and I'm sure everything's going to be all right.
01:27:08.159 --> 01:27:12.079
- How did it go today, Miguel?
- Fine, fine.
01:27:12.680 --> 01:27:15.960
How about you and your concert?
01:27:16.119 --> 01:27:21.159
Let's not talk about it.
Let me enjoy the barbecue.
01:27:21.680 --> 01:27:24.000
I don't really know.
I got myself into a mess...
01:27:24.159 --> 01:27:27.520
Yes, but it includes a lot of people
and it's not really my cup of tea.
01:27:28.199 --> 01:27:33.119
I like to play with my little band,
and that is what makes me happy.
01:27:33.239 --> 01:27:36.279
So many people, it's becoming complicated.
01:27:36.479 --> 01:27:41.079
The one who doesn't come, the one who was supposed
to come but can't come anymore...
01:27:42.119 --> 01:27:45.680
Anyway,
I am not panicking, but…
01:27:45.720 --> 01:27:50.439
But I almost feel like flipping
the table over and fucking it all up.
01:27:50.800 --> 01:27:53.479
Then why are you doing it?
01:27:53.920 --> 01:27:58.359
You're always happy to do it.
01:27:58.720 --> 01:28:00.800
Happy to meet everyone.
01:28:00.960 --> 01:28:04.159
But there are always problems.
01:28:04.279 --> 01:28:08.079
No money, in the end
I'm not going to make a profit.
01:28:08.520 --> 01:28:11.640
I've been screwed.
01:28:11.760 --> 01:28:15.520
From that point of view,
I feel completely burned out.
01:28:15.720 --> 01:28:24.159
I'm like the toasted cutlet,
the same color.
01:28:25.000 --> 01:28:27.319
Anyway...
01:28:28.920 --> 01:28:31.159
You've faced way worse situations.
01:28:31.720 --> 01:28:34.079
Yeah, well.
01:28:40.880 --> 01:28:42.600
He burned himself.
01:28:43.600 --> 01:28:46.359
With the barbecue.
01:28:51.039 --> 01:28:53.479
Right in the nose!
01:30:12.119 --> 01:30:14.119
Who wants a program?
01:30:14.199 --> 01:30:18.479
Edmar, you, Israel and Josele...
01:30:18.640 --> 01:30:23.079
Look at the fingers of the bass players,
All these are good, but this one...
01:30:23.159 --> 01:30:25.439
Look at my little finger,
I look like a frog.
01:30:28.479 --> 01:30:33.600
Josele, I'm sorry for asking,
but you know you can do the same with me.
01:30:37.840 --> 01:30:42.600
you know I'm willing to die for you.
01:30:44.399 --> 01:30:46.960
The guys here are great!
01:30:49.800 --> 01:30:53.640
We let him sing two verses
and we go on?
01:31:10.000 --> 01:31:15.720
The feeling you have before
a big concert like this…
01:31:17.119 --> 01:31:21.359
comes from the impatience of getting on stage
with your friends
01:31:21.439 --> 01:31:27.119
from the pressure of making it all work out
and everyone enjoying it.
01:31:27.760 --> 01:31:33.800
But if you're too excited about making this
the best concert of your life...
01:31:34.319 --> 01:31:38.720
No, no, no,
that day is no different from any other day.
01:31:39.520 --> 01:31:43.239
You're going to do what you always do:
Give it your all.
01:32:15.159 --> 01:32:18.479
My heart is burning,
01:32:19.680 --> 01:32:24.600
because he's got your print.
01:32:25.439 --> 01:32:29.760
I'm struggling to forget you,
01:32:30.560 --> 01:32:33.840
I'm struggling to forget you.
01:32:35.199 --> 01:32:39.119
I'm struggling to forget you,
01:32:39.720 --> 01:32:44.399
but I love you more and more.
01:32:44.720 --> 01:32:48.640
I'm struggling to forget you,
01:32:49.520 --> 01:32:53.479
but I love you more and more.
01:32:59.880 --> 01:33:05.199
For dessert we will offer you
this chorus with a solo by Antonio Serrano.
01:33:05.479 --> 01:33:08.920
All wrapped up in a melody
that will be delicate and soft.
01:37:25.359 --> 01:37:28.880
When you play,
you feel your soul dissolve in the sound.
01:37:32.680 --> 01:37:35.279
You lose your sense of time and space.
01:37:36.199 --> 01:37:41.039
And you blend into a mysterious collective energy
with the other musicians.
01:37:41.720 --> 01:37:43.960
with the public, with the universe
01:37:44.680 --> 01:37:45.720
and you spin.
01:37:46.319 --> 01:37:49.279
That's trance.
01:38:33.560 --> 01:38:35.840
What is this sweet madness?
01:38:36.680 --> 01:38:41.199
To fail to discern dreams from reality.
01:38:45.279 --> 01:38:49.159
That one musical note is of use to you,
and the one next to it as well.
01:38:50.600 --> 01:38:54.680
That the company of people and their absence
are both good for you.
01:38:56.439 --> 01:39:01.000
That success and failure accompany you.
01:39:02.159 --> 01:39:05.520
And that you always have
a coin in your pocket
01:39:06.520 --> 01:39:10.560
To buy a glass of wine
and pay what is due.
01:39:13.359 --> 01:39:19.039
How sweet to imagine awakening each morning
from a dream of a new melody.
01:39:19.560 --> 01:39:22.960
And not to remember it,
not to leave a trace.
01:39:25.159 --> 01:39:29.079
I ignore what I have done,
but I know who I was with.
01:39:29.960 --> 01:39:31.399
Thanks to them
01:39:31.720 --> 01:39:35.000
and also to those who were not there
01:39:36.319 --> 01:39:38.000
I can keep on dreaming
01:39:38.840 --> 01:39:43.279
Perhaps of a concert on the moon.
01:39:52.000 --> 01:39:55.319
A Film by
Emilio BELMONTE
01:39:56.439 --> 01:39:58.760
Featuring
Jorge PARDO
01:43:42.039 --> 01:43:44.159
You are more
flamenco than anyone.
01:43:44.399 --> 01:43:46.079
You truly play like a gipsy.
01:43:47.439 --> 01:43:49.960
No one can
blow like you do.
01:43:50.439 --> 01:43:53.000
I've learnt from
the best, that's all!
01:43:53.479 --> 01:43:54.840
This is how it works.
01:43:55.000 --> 01:43:56.119
For sure!
01:43:56.239 --> 01:43:57.359
You're the king!
01:43:57.560 --> 01:43:59.760
From me to you,
Chicharito de Jerez.
01:44:00.159 --> 01:44:01.840
Always on the beat!
