As an experiment, Mehran Tamadon asks exiled Iranians to interrogate him as if they were an agent of the Islamic Republic. A renowned actor with first-hand knowledge of such mistreatment takes up the challenge. The director's goal: for the real torturer in Iran to see himself through the film as if in a mirror. The violent experience of being in the torturer’s head confronts them with what they are capable of doing and the limits of the project itself.

00:00:02.720 --> 00:00:07.000
This film was made before
the "Woman, Life, Freedom" movement
00:00:07.240 --> 00:00:12.440
and the Islamic Republic’s violent repression
on the Iranian people.
00:00:31.880 --> 00:00:34.280
These are my two old passports.
00:00:36.440 --> 00:00:41.280
For almost 12 years,
I traveled regularly to Iran.
00:00:42.000 --> 00:00:43.560
And I met and filmed
00:00:44.000 --> 00:00:48.880
the defenders of the regime:
the Bassidji militiamen and the mullahs.
00:00:53.560 --> 00:00:56.680
This was my last day of filming in Iran.
00:00:57.880 --> 00:01:00.640
September 20th 2012.
00:01:01.920 --> 00:01:05.600
Two days later, the authorities
confiscated my passport because of the film.
00:01:05.800 --> 00:01:10.480
After multiple summons and hours of questioning,
they gave it back.
00:01:10.880 --> 00:01:14.240
The intelligence agents made it clear...
00:01:15.000 --> 00:01:17.280
never come back to Iran.
00:01:18.160 --> 00:01:24.480
After 8 years away from my country,
I've come up with a way to go back.
00:01:25.920 --> 00:01:28.680
I search for an Iranian refugee here in France,
00:01:28.840 --> 00:01:32.600
who is willing
to interrogate me in front of a camera,
00:01:32.840 --> 00:01:36.800
just like an agent of the Iranian regime.
00:01:38.560 --> 00:01:42.960
An interrogation which is completely
out of my control, while I make the movie
00:01:43.280 --> 00:01:47.120
lasting several hours,
or even days.
00:01:47.280 --> 00:01:48.280
I have no clue.
00:01:49.560 --> 00:01:50.560
And then...
00:01:51.280 --> 00:01:54.760
I'd like to return to Iran
with this film about my interrogation.
00:01:57.960 --> 00:02:02.400
So the man who arrests
and interrogates me...
00:02:04.280 --> 00:02:05.880
...sees this film.
00:02:07.880 --> 00:02:13.120
A film that is as much
a reflection of him as it is of me.
00:02:14.600 --> 00:02:18.400
I don't know...
Maybe it's just a dream or a utopia.
00:02:18.880 --> 00:02:21.480
But I'm convinced that if I go to prison,
00:02:21.720 --> 00:02:25.000
I can, with my attitude,
and especially with my film,
00:02:25.240 --> 00:02:30.360
push the interrogator away
from his position of power.
00:02:32.080 --> 00:02:36.160
I am basically trying
to make the interrogator doubt himself.
00:02:36.360 --> 00:02:40.200
An interrogator who is dangerous
and who scares me.
00:02:41.520 --> 00:02:43.920
That is my ideal scenario.
00:02:44.400 --> 00:02:47.680
MY WORST ENEMY
A film by Mehran Tamadon
00:02:53.240 --> 00:02:57.120
You go in wearing a blindfold.
It's important not to know where you are.
00:02:57.480 --> 00:03:01.880
In the interrogation room,
that's the scary thing, not knowing where you are.
00:03:06.160 --> 00:03:11.520
When they take you in, you're at war.
00:03:12.480 --> 00:03:14.560
They seek to defeat you.
00:03:22.640 --> 00:03:24.520
They took you from the streets?
00:03:25.360 --> 00:03:30.160
Yes. Outside the Faculty of Foreign Languages
at Allameh University.
00:03:31.280 --> 00:03:32.440
That's where they took me.
00:03:33.040 --> 00:03:35.120
How?
- At gunpoint.
00:03:36.640 --> 00:03:40.400
How did it happen?
- First, a man called out:
00:03:40.760 --> 00:03:41.880
"Mojtaba!"
00:03:42.400 --> 00:03:44.880
He said my name
00:03:45.000 --> 00:03:46.960
I said, "Yes?"
00:03:47.120 --> 00:03:49.720
He pretended to be heading for somewhere else.
00:03:49.880 --> 00:03:53.520
I laughed, turned around,
and suddenly, he grabbed my wrist.
00:03:53.680 --> 00:03:57.080
Then several people dragged me away.
00:03:58.000 --> 00:04:02.440
I was shouting because
I had no clue who they were.
00:04:02.680 --> 00:04:07.520
If they had shown me a warrant,
I'd have followed them, as per the law.
00:04:08.320 --> 00:04:12.680
They wore civilian clothes,
so I mistook them for religious militiamen.
00:04:12.880 --> 00:04:14.320
As I had given several interviews,
00:04:14.480 --> 00:04:17.480
I figured they were annoyed
and wanted revenge.
00:04:17.600 --> 00:04:19.400
In any case, it was horrific.
00:04:19.640 --> 00:04:25.680
Seeing me being grabbed,
my friends came over to help.
00:04:25.880 --> 00:04:30.200
Then a guy pulled a Colt pistol on them.
00:04:30.480 --> 00:04:32.920
My friends just stood there, frozen.
00:04:33.200 --> 00:04:36.640
It was such an unreal situation !
00:04:37.000 --> 00:04:39.800
Like some kind of painting.
00:04:39.960 --> 00:04:43.600
They were all standing still, perplexed.
00:04:43.840 --> 00:04:46.080
That moment is etched into my mind.
00:04:53.640 --> 00:04:57.640
The first 12 days,
the door did not open once.
00:04:59.000 --> 00:05:02.960
There was no night or day.
Time stopped flowing.
00:05:04.400 --> 00:05:06.400
No matter
how much you banged on the door...
00:05:06.640 --> 00:05:08.000
Still, total silence.
00:05:08.960 --> 00:05:13.600
All you could hear were guards shouting
to keep each other awake.
00:05:13.760 --> 00:05:14.760
How so?
00:05:22.880 --> 00:05:25.600
From both sides.
Lasting all night.
00:05:25.760 --> 00:05:27.320
It was non-stop.
00:05:31.400 --> 00:05:34.120
You have no clue what's going to happen!
00:05:34.320 --> 00:05:38.200
One day goes by, then a second, a third...
Four, five, six...
00:05:38.360 --> 00:05:40.080
On the sixth day, you...
00:05:40.480 --> 00:05:43.280
You can no longer sleep.
00:05:43.560 --> 00:05:45.600
The place is awful.
00:05:45.880 --> 00:05:47.440
The toilets is in the cell.
00:05:47.600 --> 00:05:50.360
There's no way to spend time.
00:05:50.560 --> 00:05:53.560
Time stops flowing, Mr. Tamadon.
00:05:53.920 --> 00:05:56.000
One hour lasts one whole day...
00:05:56.120 --> 00:06:00.080
You have nothing to do.
You wait and wait...
00:06:05.320 --> 00:06:07.440
There, only two minutes have passed.
00:06:14.080 --> 00:06:15.920
From start, they use violence.
00:06:16.080 --> 00:06:20.920
They make it clear they're in charge
and you're nothing.
00:06:21.240 --> 00:06:22.840
To crush you.
00:06:23.040 --> 00:06:28.880
I've seen people undergo torture
during several years.
00:06:29.440 --> 00:06:32.000
Just imagine
being cuffed to a radiator
00:06:32.880 --> 00:06:34.240
for a whole year.
00:06:34.720 --> 00:06:38.000
In a corridor where people
are always walking by,
00:06:38.120 --> 00:06:42.160
imagine someone cuffing you
to a radiator for one year.
00:06:42.320 --> 00:06:43.840
Did you see this?
00:06:44.080 --> 00:06:45.360
Yes, I saw this.
00:06:45.560 --> 00:06:48.600
In the hallway,
in the interrogation wing.
00:06:48.800 --> 00:06:51.840
Imagine a hallway like this one here
00:06:52.440 --> 00:06:57.960
But it's very long,
with offices on each side.
00:06:58.400 --> 00:07:02.360
The detainees would wait
for the interrogator to arrive.
00:07:02.840 --> 00:07:04.720
You'd sit and wait.
00:07:05.240 --> 00:07:09.800
And some were still there, poor them.
Their nickname was:
00:07:10.000 --> 00:07:12.240
"Hallway sleepers".
- Hallway sleepers?
00:07:12.440 --> 00:07:13.600
Yes...
00:07:14.800 --> 00:07:17.880
Hallway sleepers would get tortured
00:07:18.040 --> 00:07:23.560
and cuffed in the hallway
between two rounds of torture.
00:07:23.840 --> 00:07:28.320
Their feet bound, covered with blood.
00:07:28.600 --> 00:07:31.240
It was terrifying.
00:07:32.520 --> 00:07:35.520
You can't inflict this
upon another human being!
00:07:36.480 --> 00:07:41.240
But here...
you're the one interrogating me.
00:07:44.640 --> 00:07:46.480
That's my story.
00:07:56.040 --> 00:08:00.280
Could this room be used for interrogations?
- Yes, it's small and stuffy.
00:08:00.440 --> 00:08:01.960
They bring you in here.
00:08:02.280 --> 00:08:05.160
You're blindfolded, they yell, "Sit!"
00:08:05.320 --> 00:08:06.480
You sit down...
00:08:06.840 --> 00:08:12.440
This pen and paper alone,
they spell out Final Judgement!
00:08:12.800 --> 00:08:17.080
They say they'll reveal your secrets.
In Arabic, it's written, "Alnejatef e sedgh".
00:08:17.240 --> 00:08:23.360
That means, "Honesty leads to salvation".
It's written on the paper.
00:08:23.640 --> 00:08:28.600
If you want to be saved, tell the truth.
- But in reality, they want the opposite.
00:08:28.800 --> 00:08:30.400
You need to lie.
00:08:30.520 --> 00:08:35.800
In this place, you're forced to say
everything they want to hear, in order...
00:08:36.640 --> 00:08:38.160
to be saved.
00:08:38.360 --> 00:08:41.760
To be saved,
you must testify against yourself and others.
00:08:41.920 --> 00:08:43.040
Truth or lie.
00:08:43.400 --> 00:08:45.400
The opposite of honesty saves you.
00:08:45.720 --> 00:08:48.040
But it still says, "Honesty leads to salvation".
00:08:48.200 --> 00:08:50.360
They write out a script.
00:08:50.640 --> 00:08:52.200
For example, a script about "infiltration".
00:08:52.600 --> 00:08:54.000
They need actors.
00:08:54.520 --> 00:08:56.240
On one occasion,
they use Faraj Sarkohi.
00:08:56.400 --> 00:08:58.840
Another time, Religious Nationalists.
Or the Left.
00:08:59.000 --> 00:09:00.560
It's all scripted.
00:09:00.760 --> 00:09:05.400
And your confessions
must confirm their script.
00:09:06.760 --> 00:09:09.440
In other words, the interrogator is here,
inside of our head.
00:09:09.640 --> 00:09:10.760
Exactly.
00:09:11.360 --> 00:09:12.440
No doubt.
00:09:12.840 --> 00:09:16.760
I'd even say, that this violence,
we're able to inflict it on each other.
00:09:16.920 --> 00:09:20.360
That's exactly what we do!
Constantly...
00:09:20.480 --> 00:09:24.400
I thus ask that for this film,
we inflict this violence on each other.
00:09:24.560 --> 00:09:27.920
I thus ask you :
would you be able
00:09:28.480 --> 00:09:33.120
to inflict this form of violence on me,
in whatever form you deem acceptable?
00:09:33.520 --> 00:09:35.280
The violence of the interrogator.
00:09:43.520 --> 00:09:45.840
I don't have the temperament.
- No?
00:09:47.080 --> 00:09:52.880
I don't have the temperament
to question you as an interrogator.
00:09:53.040 --> 00:09:54.280
It's not in my nature.
00:09:55.000 --> 00:09:57.640
Your nature?
- It's not in my nature.
00:09:57.840 --> 00:10:00.720
I don't have the mindset to...
00:10:01.880 --> 00:10:04.280
...to sit in the interrogator's chair
00:10:04.440 --> 00:10:08.000
and question the person in front of me.
00:10:09.560 --> 00:10:11.680
I don't have that mentality.
00:10:14.720 --> 00:10:18.320
I'm afraid I'd actually be quite good
at playing this horrific role.
00:10:18.760 --> 00:10:21.520
These guys are not natural monsters.
00:10:21.720 --> 00:10:23.640
The situation makes them like that.
00:10:23.760 --> 00:10:27.240
Anyone in that situation
can turn into one.
00:10:27.880 --> 00:10:29.440
That's the scary thing.
00:10:31.160 --> 00:10:33.560
Perhaps not just anyone, right?
00:10:34.360 --> 00:10:38.360
As I see it, the context weights more
than one's character.
00:10:38.720 --> 00:10:43.960
A person's character plays first,
to outright reject the situation.
00:10:44.160 --> 00:10:48.640
To avoid becoming such a monster,
you must refuse the situation.
00:10:48.840 --> 00:10:50.640
If you accept it, you become one.
00:10:51.200 --> 00:10:56.000
Even now, I'm wondering
why I'm taking on this role today?
00:10:56.600 --> 00:11:01.240
That's already a question for me.
Something must be wrong with me.
00:11:03.440 --> 00:11:07.440
How long will it be
before you start missing your family?
00:11:09.360 --> 00:11:11.040
I want to know why I'm here.
00:11:12.440 --> 00:11:14.640
No, that's not the question I asked you.
00:11:17.040 --> 00:11:18.600
What grade is your kid in?
00:11:20.200 --> 00:11:22.240
6th and 5th grade.
00:11:22.920 --> 00:11:27.680
Imagine them entering high school,
and you're still in here.
00:11:29.520 --> 00:11:31.400
I have to understand why.
00:11:32.280 --> 00:11:33.440
There is no reason.
00:11:34.280 --> 00:11:36.440
Because you didn't help yourself.
00:11:36.760 --> 00:11:38.880
You decided to harm your kids.
00:11:43.840 --> 00:11:45.400
How about you stay for a while?
00:11:46.600 --> 00:11:50.960
I come back in three months
to see if you've found an answer.
00:11:51.360 --> 00:11:54.360
So we can help you.
Or we see that you still want to stay.
00:11:57.800 --> 00:12:02.680
You know, we have enough evidence
to really fill up your file.
00:12:06.200 --> 00:12:09.120
You've got nothing on me.
- We'll make things up.
00:12:12.440 --> 00:12:13.680
Fake evidence?
00:12:14.560 --> 00:12:18.800
We'll see, either we keep you without trial,
or we ask a judge to sentence you.
00:12:19.960 --> 00:12:21.360
We're in no rush.
00:12:22.360 --> 00:12:26.920
Just like you earn your salary from making films.
I clock in here every day.
00:12:27.320 --> 00:12:30.920
Time passes...
And I earn the same.
00:12:36.080 --> 00:12:39.240
Do you want to help yourself?
Or shall I come back in three months?
00:12:49.400 --> 00:12:51.080
I want to help myself.
00:12:52.160 --> 00:12:53.160
Good.
00:12:54.680 --> 00:12:55.680
Write.
00:12:56.760 --> 00:12:59.520
Who finances your films?
00:13:06.880 --> 00:13:09.200
Who else?
What does Hamze Ghalebi do?
00:13:15.680 --> 00:13:17.520
He studies pharmacy.
-Where?
00:13:21.040 --> 00:13:22.360
Outside of the city
00:13:22.680 --> 00:13:24.960
What does that mean?
Give me the name.
00:13:26.280 --> 00:13:27.280
Reims.
00:13:28.440 --> 00:13:30.800
Which university?
-I don't know.
00:13:40.920 --> 00:13:41.920
Good.
00:13:45.000 --> 00:13:46.000
That's not bad
00:13:46.200 --> 00:13:47.840
For a first day, it's not bad.
00:13:48.160 --> 00:13:52.000
But Hamze Ghalebi has the name of
his university on his Linkedin.
00:13:53.280 --> 00:13:54.600
You just lied to us.
00:14:00.600 --> 00:14:02.400
I must've made a mistake.
00:14:02.600 --> 00:14:06.560
You're making up excuses,
and you forgot that you had to stay here.
00:14:07.840 --> 00:14:09.760
I leave you the papers.
00:14:10.520 --> 00:14:11.760
You're going back to your cell.
00:14:13.400 --> 00:14:15.360
I'll be back in a few weeks.
00:14:16.960 --> 00:14:18.120
And we discuss it again.
00:14:18.760 --> 00:14:21.320
Is that good?
Or do you want to complete it now?
00:14:28.040 --> 00:14:30.360
That was one type of interrogation.
00:14:32.200 --> 00:14:33.960
We had discussed several scenarios.
00:14:35.160 --> 00:14:40.000
In your case,
I think that one would be best.
00:14:40.600 --> 00:14:42.040
The one we just acted out?
- Yes.
00:14:43.400 --> 00:14:45.920
Their goal is to tease out
any and all kind of information.
00:14:47.760 --> 00:14:52.200
Asking questions about other people,
their addresses, phone numbers, workplaces.
00:14:52.360 --> 00:14:54.040
Who knows who?
00:15:01.880 --> 00:15:04.760
After a few months, they'll say,
"Get out and never come back."
00:15:08.560 --> 00:15:10.160
What else?
00:15:12.320 --> 00:15:18.400
But for that to work,
he has to really scare you.
00:15:19.600 --> 00:15:24.800
He could also frighten you with stories
about the case being built against you.
00:15:25.840 --> 00:15:28.480
They'll say,
"This and that will happen to you..."
00:15:29.080 --> 00:15:30.520
"You'll get 11 years for this."
00:15:31.400 --> 00:15:35.840
You might be accused of spying...
it was hard for me, bringing that up.
00:15:36.000 --> 00:15:36.800
Why?
00:15:36.960 --> 00:15:41.600
With investment companies,
they also accuse you of spying.
00:15:42.480 --> 00:15:43.760
Why was it hard to bring up?
00:15:44.440 --> 00:15:48.160
Because I didn't want to go too deep
into the role of a torturer.
00:15:48.520 --> 00:15:49.680
Just from saying that?
00:15:50.080 --> 00:15:53.000
Talking about spying
would be taking the role too far?
00:15:53.440 --> 00:15:57.600
For example, about your kids,
I could have said more... But forget it.
00:15:58.400 --> 00:16:02.680
It feels so weird...
I'd rather not put myself in that situation.
00:16:02.840 --> 00:16:08.200
But they could keep on probing.
- What could they say about my child?
00:16:08.360 --> 00:16:13.040
For example, "Did you know your wife
is in Iran and looking for you?"
00:16:13.440 --> 00:16:16.920
"Do you want us to bring her in?
Do you want to see her again?"
00:16:18.600 --> 00:16:22.320
They'd say things like that?
- Yes.
00:16:25.640 --> 00:16:30.640
One night, one of them came in,
acting really kind and friendly...
00:16:31.200 --> 00:16:33.320
He asked, "Tell me..."
00:16:34.320 --> 00:16:36.760
"How big is your family?"
00:16:36.920 --> 00:16:41.960
As if he wanted to check
how bad losing one child would be for my family.
00:16:42.120 --> 00:16:43.680
"How many siblings do you have?"
00:16:45.000 --> 00:16:49.360
"If something happens to you...?
Are you an only child?"
00:16:49.560 --> 00:16:50.880
Imagine questions like that.
00:16:55.800 --> 00:16:58.440
You know you're risking 15 years in prison?
00:16:58.600 --> 00:17:01.040
And you're accused of spying?
00:17:01.560 --> 00:17:05.560
You know you acted against
Iranian National Security?
00:17:06.600 --> 00:17:09.040
What have you done
for your country, Tamadon?
00:17:09.360 --> 00:17:11.840
Apart from blackening its name?
00:17:12.960 --> 00:17:14.400
Why did you even come back?
00:17:15.520 --> 00:17:16.720
Why come back?
- I...
00:17:16.880 --> 00:17:18.920
Who are you working with in Tehran?
00:17:19.200 --> 00:17:21.200
I came back to show you the film.
00:17:21.520 --> 00:17:23.000
To show me the film?
00:17:23.360 --> 00:17:25.760
You pathetic guy!
I've already seen your film.
00:17:26.720 --> 00:17:32.760
Idiot! Coming all the way here
to show me the film?
00:17:33.000 --> 00:17:36.080
Your entire life is under our control!
00:17:36.320 --> 00:17:38.480
We know all your relations.
00:17:39.040 --> 00:17:42.320
I can tell you on what day
you met with this or that person!
00:17:42.480 --> 00:17:44.520
I even know what was discussed.
00:17:44.720 --> 00:17:46.680
I have the recordings tapes, photos.
00:17:46.800 --> 00:17:49.960
And you make the trip from France
to show me this film?
00:17:50.320 --> 00:17:54.320
You should have gone to Hell!
You should've stayed away.
00:17:54.920 --> 00:17:55.880
Moron.
00:17:56.000 --> 00:18:00.320
You're here because you're an idiot.
You got caught for nothing.
00:18:00.440 --> 00:18:02.640
You prostituted yourself for a few euros!
00:18:02.800 --> 00:18:04.560
You sold out your country!
00:18:05.840 --> 00:18:08.000
What are these lies you've made up?
00:18:09.880 --> 00:18:12.880
What's all this shit you've written to me?
00:18:20.520 --> 00:18:21.560
Listen!
00:18:25.240 --> 00:18:27.440
In February 2020...
00:18:28.800 --> 00:18:32.880
...you were at an important meeting
with the French secret services.
00:18:33.800 --> 00:18:36.880
You will tell me about that meeting.
Every single detail.
00:18:37.640 --> 00:18:38.760
Got it?
00:18:39.600 --> 00:18:41.480
Do you think we're asses?
00:18:45.680 --> 00:18:46.720
Stand up.
00:18:47.000 --> 00:18:48.320
Stand up and face the wall.
00:18:49.000 --> 00:18:50.200
Don't turn around.
00:18:52.120 --> 00:18:57.280
I'll keep you standing for 24 hours,
then you'll talk!
00:18:58.120 --> 00:19:01.200
Do you believe
the interrogator has a conscience?
00:19:03.280 --> 00:19:06.160
Of course.
Everyone has a conscience.
00:19:06.320 --> 00:19:11.560
But first he has a job to do.
And he sees you as the enemy.
00:19:12.200 --> 00:19:17.760
The interrogator justifies his own acts.
Same as under the Shah.
00:19:18.080 --> 00:19:21.240
Do you think the interrogator
who beat you had a conscience?
00:19:22.080 --> 00:19:25.480
What do you mean?
Everyone has a conscience.
00:19:25.640 --> 00:19:30.320
Everyone has a conscience...
- But they're defending something.
00:19:31.160 --> 00:19:34.640
They're defending something
and you're standing in their way.
00:19:35.440 --> 00:19:42.120
This "conscience" question is abstract.
I don't understand it.
00:19:43.040 --> 00:19:47.520
He probably has children.
He'd surely be upset if they were attacked.
00:19:47.640 --> 00:19:50.240
All in all,
he is a perfectly ordinary man.
00:19:50.400 --> 00:19:53.960
All right,
but when he's interrogating you
00:19:54.840 --> 00:19:56.400
In that moment...
00:19:57.400 --> 00:20:01.240
His conscience...
- Conscience, what's that about?
00:20:01.920 --> 00:20:05.640
He thinks you're deviant, and that..
00:20:08.000 --> 00:20:11.080
he has to set you right,
because you're a lost soul.
00:20:11.280 --> 00:20:15.200
He might also think the regime is rotten,
but that you're no better.
00:20:15.600 --> 00:20:20.240
Sometimes, he's just doing his job,
in which case, he abandons his conscience.
00:20:20.520 --> 00:20:23.680
If it's just a job, he has no conscience.
- As I see it, yes.
00:20:23.840 --> 00:20:29.440
As long as he defends his beliefs...
- You see it in the way he combats you.
00:20:29.960 --> 00:20:33.760
The result might be the same,
but it's not the same way of fighting.
00:20:33.960 --> 00:20:36.880
I think power structures
slowly lose their conscience.
00:20:37.000 --> 00:20:39.120
They just "do their jobs."
-As you see it
00:20:39.600 --> 00:20:43.920
nowadays, interrogators...?
-Their conscience slowly falters.
00:20:44.280 --> 00:20:46.520
These interrogators are not the same.
00:20:46.960 --> 00:20:50.280
Nowadays, interrogators ask about sex.
00:20:50.960 --> 00:20:55.200
Often, they stop the interrogation
and they ask sexual questions.
00:20:55.800 --> 00:20:58.760
They want distraction.
They want pleasure.
00:20:58.920 --> 00:21:02.720
Something they watch porn.
Sometimes they talk about it.
00:21:03.200 --> 00:21:05.920
In the 80's it was different.
00:21:07.440 --> 00:21:10.680
They were cruel,
but they wouldn't ask questions on that.
00:21:12.000 --> 00:21:14.640
So with someone like that...
00:21:16.360 --> 00:21:19.960
how do we re-engage his conscience?
00:21:20.120 --> 00:21:22.720
Is it possible?
- I don't know.
00:21:23.120 --> 00:21:24.960
I don't know... Perhaps...
00:21:26.520 --> 00:21:30.080
Maybe we need training.
No one knows how to.
00:21:30.400 --> 00:21:34.600
I couldn't re-engage their conscience.
My friend Hoda wasn't able to either!
00:21:40.480 --> 00:21:43.160
It's a job. It's a system.
I'd be surprised if...
00:21:43.920 --> 00:21:44.960
I don't know.
00:21:45.160 --> 00:21:46.920
I don't have an answer.
00:21:47.080 --> 00:21:48.720
Perhaps someone else would know.
00:21:53.560 --> 00:21:55.560
You left Iran when you were 12?
00:21:58.200 --> 00:21:59.160
Alone?
00:21:59.480 --> 00:22:02.240
No, with my sister and my mother.
00:22:03.320 --> 00:22:04.400
Where do they live?
00:22:05.160 --> 00:22:08.040
My mother is in France.
My sister is in the United States.
00:22:11.440 --> 00:22:13.000
Your father?
- He died.
00:22:14.560 --> 00:22:16.840
Natural death or killed?
- Natural death.
00:22:17.280 --> 00:22:18.320
From a heart attack.
00:22:19.360 --> 00:22:23.600
I thought he was a communist.
- Yes, but he didn't die in prison.
00:22:23.720 --> 00:22:26.520
He got out in 1966 `
and died in 1972.
00:22:26.720 --> 00:22:28.880
He died seven years before the Revolution.
00:22:29.160 --> 00:22:31.640
We had all supported the Revolution.
00:22:31.800 --> 00:22:33.440
We were happy the Revolution came.
00:22:35.960 --> 00:22:37.520
You were happy before it!
00:22:38.760 --> 00:22:42.280
We're still happy there was a revolution.
00:22:42.960 --> 00:22:43.960
So ?
00:22:47.400 --> 00:22:49.400
You're happy we had the Islamic Revolution?
00:22:52.400 --> 00:22:54.320
Not that it became Islamic.
00:22:54.640 --> 00:22:56.600
But the fact there was a revolution...
00:22:56.760 --> 00:22:58.440
Your mother went directly to France?
00:22:59.080 --> 00:23:01.080
My mother... Yes.
00:23:01.800 --> 00:23:03.000
From the very start?
00:23:03.280 --> 00:23:05.400
All these years, you've lived in France?
00:23:06.720 --> 00:23:08.400
My...
- Are you lying?
00:23:08.520 --> 00:23:10.800
What?
- Are you lying? Is this all true?
00:23:10.960 --> 00:23:12.160
This is all true.
00:23:12.560 --> 00:23:13.800
Good.
- Why?
00:23:14.240 --> 00:23:16.120
No, we came to France in 1984.
00:23:16.280 --> 00:23:19.000
Be precise. "Precise".
- Yes.
00:23:19.160 --> 00:23:22.120
I lived in France from age 12 to 28.
00:23:22.360 --> 00:23:23.960
Even worse...
- What?
00:23:25.080 --> 00:23:27.320
How many years? 16 years?
00:23:27.400 --> 00:23:29.400
Yes, 16 years.
Then Iran for 4 years...
00:23:29.480 --> 00:23:31.280
Do you have a French passport?
00:23:31.840 --> 00:23:32.640
Right now?
00:23:32.760 --> 00:23:36.440
I've got two.
An Iranian and a French one.
00:23:36.840 --> 00:23:39.960
Which passport do you use
when you travel in secret?
00:23:40.800 --> 00:23:44.440
I don't travel in secret.
You mean, outside of Iran?
00:23:44.600 --> 00:23:49.800
If a country doesn't issue visas to Iranians,
00:23:49.960 --> 00:23:52.240
then I use my French passport.
00:23:52.440 --> 00:23:55.800
You can't go anywhere with an Iranian passport.
- You only have a French passport?
00:23:55.960 --> 00:23:57.280
Or several?
00:23:57.520 --> 00:23:58.480
No, just one.
00:23:59.080 --> 00:24:00.480
Why?
- We'll see.
00:24:00.640 --> 00:24:02.520
Let's start from the top.
00:24:03.320 --> 00:24:05.040
After 16 years, you left for Iran.
00:24:05.840 --> 00:24:07.040
Why did you come back?
00:24:07.440 --> 00:24:10.760
If you came back to live here,
why only stay four years?
00:24:11.760 --> 00:24:12.920
Where did you work?
00:24:13.920 --> 00:24:15.640
Suddenly, you come back to Iran.
00:24:16.240 --> 00:24:18.720
You're an architect,
00:24:18.880 --> 00:24:21.760
Then suddenly,
you become a film director.
00:24:22.360 --> 00:24:24.680
And you head straight to the cemetery.
00:24:25.440 --> 00:24:27.080
To film the mothers of martyrs.
00:24:28.240 --> 00:24:29.880
What prompted this evolution?
00:24:31.440 --> 00:24:33.120
"Evolution" in what sense?
00:24:33.800 --> 00:24:35.080
You were an architect, right?
00:24:35.960 --> 00:24:39.560
That's why you came back, right?
- Actually, I always felt...
00:24:40.120 --> 00:24:43.920
I felt that by practising architecture
00:24:44.400 --> 00:24:46.200
I wasn't able to really grapple
00:24:46.680 --> 00:24:51.240
with philosophical ideas and questions.
00:24:51.880 --> 00:24:55.120
That's why I quit architecture
and started making films.
00:24:55.400 --> 00:24:56.400
And?
00:24:56.640 --> 00:24:57.960
Who was behind this change?
00:24:58.600 --> 00:25:00.040
You just suddenly decided to...
00:25:00.480 --> 00:25:02.960
serve philosophical bullshit with your films.
00:25:09.920 --> 00:25:11.280
Who was behind this change?
00:25:12.000 --> 00:25:15.400
Nobody. I went to the cemetery and...
00:25:15.600 --> 00:25:17.440
Who is Fereshteh Homayouni?
00:25:21.360 --> 00:25:23.880
Who is she and what was the nature
of your relationship?
00:25:24.520 --> 00:25:26.040
In detail.
00:25:33.840 --> 00:25:37.040
Fereshteh Homayouni is a friend who...
00:25:42.360 --> 00:25:43.840
Why are you laughing?
Go on.
00:25:45.680 --> 00:25:48.840
She's a friend who makes films.
00:25:50.720 --> 00:25:52.800
What was the nature of your relationship?
00:25:53.720 --> 00:25:56.280
How is she involved in your films?
00:26:03.880 --> 00:26:07.480
She helped me with my first film.
00:26:08.520 --> 00:26:10.640
The one in the cemetery.
- She just helped you?
00:26:11.960 --> 00:26:15.360
Yes, she helped me.
- How did you meet her?
00:26:16.320 --> 00:26:17.400
At a party.
00:26:18.120 --> 00:26:19.160
A party where?
00:26:20.400 --> 00:26:21.960
In Iran?
- Yes.
00:26:23.280 --> 00:26:27.840
A party in whose home?
- She had just come back from Lisbon.
00:26:28.960 --> 00:26:30.160
She lived in Lisbon?
00:26:30.960 --> 00:26:33.320
She also suddenly decided
to come back to Iran.
00:26:33.960 --> 00:26:36.720
You both met in Iran.
At whose home?
00:26:40.720 --> 00:26:41.800
I forget.
00:26:43.360 --> 00:26:45.200
Don't bullshit me.
Who else was there?
00:26:51.200 --> 00:26:52.200
So?
00:26:55.640 --> 00:26:57.080
How long had you been in Iran,
00:26:58.120 --> 00:27:00.120
at the time you met Fereshteh?
00:27:01.600 --> 00:27:02.760
Less than a year.
00:27:04.120 --> 00:27:05.120
And?
00:27:06.200 --> 00:27:07.360
Where were you living?
00:27:08.120 --> 00:27:10.120
At my mother's.
- Where was that?
00:27:10.360 --> 00:27:11.400
Jordan.
00:27:12.200 --> 00:27:14.680
And where did Fereshteh live?
- Jordan.
00:27:16.320 --> 00:27:18.560
And you both met at someone else's home?
00:27:23.480 --> 00:27:24.520
And?
00:27:24.800 --> 00:27:26.480
You're recalling things now.
00:27:28.200 --> 00:27:29.560
Who is "Bald Mohsen"?
00:27:34.680 --> 00:27:35.640
Mohsen?
00:27:36.240 --> 00:27:37.440
A friend.
00:27:37.880 --> 00:27:39.280
What links all these people together?
00:27:45.480 --> 00:27:48.280
I have a feeling
you're hiding some information.
00:27:48.520 --> 00:27:50.480
You're heading that way.
00:27:58.040 --> 00:28:00.360
Have you decided
to give me false information?
00:28:00.560 --> 00:28:01.560
You're playing smart.
00:28:02.440 --> 00:28:05.520
You know, I already know most of the answers
to what I'm asking.
00:28:09.240 --> 00:28:10.520
Let's resume.
00:28:11.960 --> 00:28:13.720
Why did you return to Iran?
00:28:18.960 --> 00:28:20.600
Why did I return to Iran?
00:28:21.080 --> 00:28:23.440
After 16 years of living in France.
00:28:23.720 --> 00:28:28.360
After you, your sister, your mother,
felt let down by the Revolution.
00:28:28.520 --> 00:28:29.800
Why return to Iran?
00:28:35.960 --> 00:28:39.200
The Islamic Republic isn't all there is.
I love Iran.
00:28:40.800 --> 00:28:41.880
And...
00:28:42.280 --> 00:28:45.320
You love Iran,
but you were in a real hurry to meet
00:28:45.480 --> 00:28:49.040
the mothers of martyrs,
the Bassidji, and the mullahs.
00:28:49.840 --> 00:28:51.120
You love Iran?
- Yes.
00:28:51.280 --> 00:28:52.280
Is that Iran, to you?
00:28:53.480 --> 00:28:55.880
Who ordered this mission?
00:28:57.400 --> 00:29:01.120
Why would you, after 16 years,
return to Iran to make a film
00:29:01.280 --> 00:29:06.080
on the mothers of martyrs, then the Bassidji,
then open a dialogue with four mullahs?
00:29:06.240 --> 00:29:07.720
No, wait...
00:29:07.880 --> 00:29:12.440
I like understanding people
who think differently from me.
00:29:12.640 --> 00:29:15.440
Whether they're Bassidji or mullahs.
00:29:15.560 --> 00:29:18.120
I also think that I'm locked in my own ideas.
00:29:18.320 --> 00:29:22.080
Knowing how other people think
lets me understand how locked in I am.
00:29:22.240 --> 00:29:24.360
And have you understood?
00:29:24.560 --> 00:29:28.360
After making crappy films for 10 years,
have you understood in what you're locked?
00:29:30.520 --> 00:29:34.480
I knew in what I was locked...
I also live with an ideology...
00:29:34.640 --> 00:29:37.800
You knew what you were locking in,
and that's what you wanted to know ?
00:29:37.960 --> 00:29:40.440
It gives you a wider knowledge of...
00:29:45.760 --> 00:29:47.120
What a great philosopher!
00:29:48.160 --> 00:29:49.120
From the top...
00:29:49.760 --> 00:29:52.040
You lived in France for 16 years.
00:29:52.800 --> 00:29:57.680
As soon as you come back,
your friend arrives from Lisbon.
00:29:59.280 --> 00:30:02.480
Your other friend is also there.
You all are making a film together.
00:30:02.800 --> 00:30:04.240
A while later,
00:30:04.600 --> 00:30:05.920
Lætitia comes along.
00:30:09.760 --> 00:30:11.520
Wasn't Fereshteh your girlfriend?
00:30:12.600 --> 00:30:13.800
You fucked her, right?
00:30:20.760 --> 00:30:23.400
Why leave Fereshteh
and go with Lætitia?
00:30:27.480 --> 00:30:30.080
My relationship with Fereshteh
didn't last very long.
00:30:31.680 --> 00:30:34.080
The relationship...
- Your mission ended.
00:30:34.200 --> 00:30:36.000
What?
- Your mission ended.
00:30:37.680 --> 00:30:39.120
Or didn't she make you come?
00:30:40.080 --> 00:30:41.720
You fucked, right?
00:30:42.080 --> 00:30:44.400
You didn't just drink tea.
What was it like?
00:30:44.520 --> 00:30:46.360
It...
- What was she like?
00:30:46.880 --> 00:30:48.520
What was it like?
- What?
00:30:50.240 --> 00:30:51.560
The fuck.
00:30:53.200 --> 00:30:54.200
What was it like?
00:30:55.360 --> 00:30:58.800
We didn't have sex...
-You didn't have sex?
00:30:59.400 --> 00:31:01.560
No sex with your girlfriend?
00:31:02.400 --> 00:31:03.800
Tell me what it was like.
00:31:05.760 --> 00:31:07.760
What?
- What was your first time like?
00:31:10.480 --> 00:31:12.600
What?
- How did you fuck?
00:31:12.840 --> 00:31:14.040
Tell me about the foreplay.
00:31:14.640 --> 00:31:15.720
Show me.
00:31:19.200 --> 00:31:21.040
What our sexual relationship was like?
- Yes.
00:31:21.640 --> 00:31:23.680
How was it sleeping together?
00:31:24.840 --> 00:31:26.120
Your Persian isn't very good.
00:31:27.320 --> 00:31:29.600
What do you mean how we slept?
- First the foreplay.
00:31:29.760 --> 00:31:32.920
In bed.
- Good, and what did you start with?
00:31:40.120 --> 00:31:41.200
Show me.
00:31:45.320 --> 00:31:46.320
Show what?
00:31:46.560 --> 00:31:48.120
How did you do it?
00:31:48.400 --> 00:31:51.240
How did you start?
Where did you put your hands?
00:31:51.520 --> 00:31:52.840
What did you start with?
00:31:54.320 --> 00:31:55.800
Did you kiss first?
00:31:56.600 --> 00:31:58.200
Did you finger her?
00:32:09.640 --> 00:32:10.480
Stand up.
00:32:11.280 --> 00:32:12.240
Stand up.
00:32:18.400 --> 00:32:19.400
Step back.
00:32:20.920 --> 00:32:21.920
Take off your jacket.
00:32:22.120 --> 00:32:23.560
What?
- Take off your jacket.
00:32:29.640 --> 00:32:32.280
Take off your sweater
and whatever's underneath.
00:32:34.600 --> 00:32:35.640
Step back.
00:32:35.880 --> 00:32:37.160
I said take it off.
00:32:49.000 --> 00:32:50.480
Take off your trousers.
00:32:55.520 --> 00:32:56.720
Hurry up.
00:33:10.520 --> 00:33:11.520
So!
00:33:15.760 --> 00:33:19.520
I see clearly through you.
And not only me.
00:33:22.680 --> 00:33:24.640
For whom do you collect
this information?
00:33:28.920 --> 00:33:31.640
Who is helping you obtain this information?
00:33:32.480 --> 00:33:34.840
Who...
- I lost focus.
00:33:36.280 --> 00:33:37.600
Go ahead and focus.
00:33:39.040 --> 00:33:40.560
I don't have information on anyone.
00:33:41.920 --> 00:33:43.000
I don't give it to anyone.
00:33:43.280 --> 00:33:44.960
If there's one single person
00:33:45.120 --> 00:33:48.960
who knows what the Bassidji
and the mullahs are doing, it's you.
00:33:49.360 --> 00:33:50.640
You don't have any information?
00:33:51.720 --> 00:33:56.040
The one person moving freely
between France and Iran is you.
00:33:57.960 --> 00:33:58.960
How come?
00:33:59.080 --> 00:34:00.440
Do you think it's normal?
00:34:00.800 --> 00:34:03.040
Don't laugh.
What an actor you are !
00:34:07.680 --> 00:34:09.240
Don't play dumb.
00:34:09.400 --> 00:34:13.760
How are you able to move freely
between here and Iran?
00:34:14.840 --> 00:34:17.920
You say they took your passport in Iran.
Is that even true?
00:34:19.480 --> 00:34:24.040
You say you were interrogated.
Maybe you just drank tea with them.
00:34:26.320 --> 00:34:27.320
Admit it.
00:34:27.920 --> 00:34:28.920
Let's go back.
00:34:30.040 --> 00:34:31.480
When you came back to Iran,
00:34:32.480 --> 00:34:34.040
and you met Fereshteh,
00:34:34.600 --> 00:34:35.640
what happened?
00:34:37.120 --> 00:34:38.560
Why did you decide to come back?
00:34:39.040 --> 00:34:41.000
Why did you start making films?
00:34:41.480 --> 00:34:43.040
Why the mothers of martyrs?
00:34:44.680 --> 00:34:46.240
Why do this after you left Iran?
00:34:47.600 --> 00:34:50.640
You should've brought Lætitia to Iran,
if you love Iran
00:34:51.560 --> 00:34:53.240
and you believe dialogue is possible.
00:34:53.880 --> 00:34:56.880
Dialogue is achieved through
the power of the camera.
00:34:59.040 --> 00:35:01.560
Through the power of the film, actually.
00:35:04.600 --> 00:35:05.600
Perfect.
00:35:08.320 --> 00:35:09.440
The camera's rolling.
00:35:12.320 --> 00:35:15.680
You say it's through the power of the camera.
Go ahead, start the dialogue.
00:35:24.120 --> 00:35:25.800
Take off your underpants.
00:35:34.640 --> 00:35:36.440
You can't have a dialogue
without underpants.
00:35:37.600 --> 00:35:39.080
Our situations need to be equal.
00:35:40.120 --> 00:35:41.760
I give you five minutes.
00:35:41.880 --> 00:35:45.240
If you say nothing,
we'll have a dialogue my way.
00:35:46.080 --> 00:35:47.080
Go ahead
00:35:49.320 --> 00:35:50.280
Face the camera.
00:35:51.000 --> 00:35:52.840
Could you repeat the question?
00:35:55.240 --> 00:35:58.400
How are you able to move freely
between France and Iran
00:35:58.520 --> 00:36:00.000
and meet all these people?
00:36:01.120 --> 00:36:03.920
You make up they took your passport,
00:36:04.080 --> 00:36:06.200
yet you're safe and sound in front of me.
00:36:06.440 --> 00:36:10.120
You make films, attend festivals,
then you simply go back to Iran.
00:36:13.040 --> 00:36:15.440
You don't worry about your wife and kids...
00:36:15.640 --> 00:36:17.040
Tell me who Fereshteh is.
00:36:19.840 --> 00:36:22.440
I swear, I...
- Who do you give the information to?
00:36:23.720 --> 00:36:25.120
Take off your tank top.
00:36:29.280 --> 00:36:30.880
Do it before it gets worse.
00:36:35.880 --> 00:36:36.840
Go on.
00:36:53.080 --> 00:36:54.080
Quickly.
00:37:34.400 --> 00:37:36.520
I said take off your underpants.
- No.
00:37:42.160 --> 00:37:45.200
Well.
Then tell me about Fereshteh.
00:37:49.240 --> 00:37:52.040
Tell me how you would make love to her.
00:37:54.920 --> 00:37:56.920
Why didn't you two hit it together?
00:37:57.320 --> 00:38:00.880
It had nothing to do with our relationship.
- What was it about?
00:38:01.480 --> 00:38:04.280
It looks like your penis doesn't work right.
00:38:04.360 --> 00:38:05.360
What?
00:38:06.640 --> 00:38:09.240
I just want to see it,
to understand the problem.
00:38:09.480 --> 00:38:10.560
Take them off.
00:38:11.640 --> 00:38:13.760
Laughing, are you?
You think I'm joking?
00:38:14.120 --> 00:38:15.920
Do I have to do it myself?
00:38:21.560 --> 00:38:22.960
What are you doing?
00:38:25.640 --> 00:38:26.640
Move.
00:38:28.240 --> 00:38:29.120
Move.
00:38:31.400 --> 00:38:32.400
There.
00:38:41.600 --> 00:38:43.120
Did I tell you to sit down?
00:38:47.120 --> 00:38:52.280
How is it you have both leftists
and mullahs as friends?
00:38:52.400 --> 00:38:54.160
It must be my personality.
00:38:55.240 --> 00:38:58.280
What personality is that?
You're forgetful, have nothing to say...
00:38:58.440 --> 00:38:59.760
You can't even discuss properly.
00:38:59.840 --> 00:39:01.200
Let alone fuck.
00:39:14.960 --> 00:39:16.200
Come here.
00:39:17.760 --> 00:39:18.800
Stand here.
00:39:36.080 --> 00:39:37.960
I'll cut the water once you take them off.
00:39:40.440 --> 00:39:43.080
I can take them off myself,
but I would rather you did it.
00:39:58.080 --> 00:39:59.320
Will you talk or not?
00:39:59.760 --> 00:40:01.880
Tell me what you were doing in Iran.
00:40:03.400 --> 00:40:04.840
Who were you informing?
00:40:10.880 --> 00:40:12.440
I'm not playing around with you.
00:40:15.120 --> 00:40:17.720
I'm not here to discuss
or fuck around with you.
00:40:42.640 --> 00:40:44.000
I'm waiting.
00:40:56.480 --> 00:40:58.200
Get up, take off your underwear.
Go on.
00:40:58.920 --> 00:40:59.840
Get up.
00:41:00.000 --> 00:41:01.320
Take off your underwear.
00:41:05.680 --> 00:41:06.640
I can't.
00:42:33.720 --> 00:42:36.200
Your kids' school closes in 30 minutes.
00:42:38.480 --> 00:42:39.440
It's 3.30 PM.
00:42:41.160 --> 00:42:42.800
Let's go for a walk.
00:42:47.640 --> 00:42:49.600
They'll see how strong Daddy is.
00:42:52.160 --> 00:42:53.560
How he won't give any information.
00:42:54.920 --> 00:42:56.560
I don't have information.
What information?
00:42:56.840 --> 00:43:00.640
How he'd sooner give his family grief
than give me any of his information.
00:43:05.000 --> 00:43:07.120
You seem to endure everything.
00:43:09.120 --> 00:43:11.480
You want me to go outside naked?
- You think so ?
00:43:22.680 --> 00:43:23.680
Get up.
00:43:27.120 --> 00:43:28.080
Get up.
00:43:35.840 --> 00:43:38.320
She wants to take me past my kids' school.
00:43:42.520 --> 00:43:43.560
Get up.
00:43:56.400 --> 00:43:58.040
You really want to take me outside?
00:43:58.440 --> 00:44:00.040
We're going to the school.
00:44:15.400 --> 00:44:16.400
Hurry up.
00:44:50.320 --> 00:44:51.280
Go on.
00:45:07.960 --> 00:45:09.600
School isn't even finished yet!
00:45:18.600 --> 00:45:21.960
Let's go to the cemetery then.
Maybe there you'll talk.
00:45:22.800 --> 00:45:26.840
And you won't embarrass your children.
- School doors aren't open yet.
00:45:33.960 --> 00:45:35.200
Who protects you?
00:45:37.320 --> 00:45:39.200
Who are you selling information to?
00:45:44.520 --> 00:45:46.320
To people here?
Or to Iranians?
00:45:48.960 --> 00:45:51.240
What were the names of the Bassidji...
00:45:52.080 --> 00:45:55.160
who you spent time with?
00:45:59.760 --> 00:46:04.520
Why did they agree
to have a friendly chat with you?
00:46:06.960 --> 00:46:08.040
That was big, right?
00:46:08.800 --> 00:46:09.840
As you say!
00:46:15.200 --> 00:46:21.000
Didn't they ask you about your friends?
Or the French people you associate with?
00:46:21.720 --> 00:46:24.040
They didn't ask you anything?
- No.
00:47:23.320 --> 00:47:26.360
How did it come about,
this unique relationship with the Bassidji?
00:47:27.360 --> 00:47:32.840
You live in France,
but your dream is to weave ties with the Bassidji!
00:47:34.800 --> 00:47:36.920
Honestly... That's a good question.
00:47:38.720 --> 00:47:40.880
Am I supposed to answer?
- Go ahead.
00:47:41.960 --> 00:47:43.440
If you have the answer, go ahead.
00:47:46.840 --> 00:47:52.080
I'm trying to understand why some people
are comfortable with repressing others.
00:47:54.640 --> 00:47:56.440
Could you kill someone?
00:47:58.280 --> 00:48:01.160
Me?
- Could you round up protesters?
00:48:01.360 --> 00:48:03.600
Beat them? Gas them?
- No.
00:48:03.920 --> 00:48:04.800
You couldn't.
-No.
00:48:04.920 --> 00:48:10.280
So how could you hang out with them,
eat with them, travel with them?
00:48:11.960 --> 00:48:15.080
Live 48 hours under the same roof as them...
How could you do that?
00:48:25.800 --> 00:48:30.000
How could you open a dialogue
with a killer holding all the power?
00:48:33.440 --> 00:48:36.840
Those people...
- How many films does it take to understand?
00:48:37.000 --> 00:48:41.240
Those people never killed anyone.
The ones I filmed didn't kill anyone.
00:48:41.440 --> 00:48:44.600
But they're capable of it.
If required, they'd do it, right?
00:48:50.920 --> 00:48:52.680
Aren't they devoted to the cause?
00:49:10.960 --> 00:49:12.640
Maybe they would kill me too, then.
00:49:13.960 --> 00:49:15.560
You doubt that? "Maybe", you say?
00:49:17.680 --> 00:49:20.480
So... Who's protecting you?
00:49:20.680 --> 00:49:22.600
Who's backing you up?
00:49:25.000 --> 00:49:26.760
What do they offer you?
00:49:32.360 --> 00:49:33.360
Hold on...
00:50:57.480 --> 00:50:58.720
What are you doing?
00:51:02.200 --> 00:51:03.080
Go down.
00:51:15.560 --> 00:51:17.640
What did you think about all night?
00:51:23.760 --> 00:51:25.360
Proud of yourself, are you?
00:51:26.080 --> 00:51:27.520
24 hours of interrogation.
00:51:28.160 --> 00:51:31.320
Even in Evin prison,
they don't strip people like that.
00:51:31.920 --> 00:51:34.040
They do something else at Evin.
00:51:35.280 --> 00:51:37.720
This should balance things out, right?
- That's fair.
00:51:43.960 --> 00:51:45.080
What's this film about?
00:51:45.720 --> 00:51:46.920
What will come out of it?
00:51:48.440 --> 00:51:51.760
You take 15 minutes for a single word!
Speak up!
00:51:51.920 --> 00:51:53.080
Yes, sorry.
00:51:53.280 --> 00:51:55.440
The film is about...
00:51:55.680 --> 00:51:59.160
It's about the violence
we inflict upon ourselves...
00:52:02.600 --> 00:52:07.160
You're planning to show the violence
between Iranians here in France?
00:52:07.320 --> 00:52:09.040
No.
Not only.
00:52:09.360 --> 00:52:12.480
You want to show it in Iran,
to real-life interrogators?
00:52:16.600 --> 00:52:19.800
Actually, that's a great idea.
00:52:20.560 --> 00:52:23.360
Doors would open for you.
You could even move back.
00:52:23.520 --> 00:52:26.080
The regime commits violence...
00:52:26.280 --> 00:52:31.200
Why not make a film on the Supreme Leader?
- ...an oppressive state that uses violence...
00:52:33.760 --> 00:52:38.960
A system uses this violence
00:52:39.440 --> 00:52:41.560
against its own people.
00:52:42.400 --> 00:52:44.240
Here, I am the system.
- If I may !
00:52:44.640 --> 00:52:46.680
You are not the system.
00:52:46.840 --> 00:52:49.600
I'm speaking to an interrogator
of the Iranian regime.
00:52:51.600 --> 00:52:53.520
It uses violence
00:52:54.680 --> 00:52:59.560
in interrogation rooms,
in its prisons, in its repressive measures
00:53:00.200 --> 00:53:01.880
against its own people,
00:53:03.680 --> 00:53:04.760
and...
00:53:06.040 --> 00:53:07.480
and...
00:53:09.000 --> 00:53:10.040
this violence...
00:53:10.840 --> 00:53:15.520
it's rooted inside of us Iranians.
00:53:16.240 --> 00:53:21.000
Mehran, ever since you're here,
you bring up this violence about me.
00:53:22.880 --> 00:53:26.640
You say I have this anger against Iran.
- Not since the start...
00:53:27.440 --> 00:53:32.400
You've been saying it since yesterday.
How'd you reach this psychoanalysis?
00:53:36.760 --> 00:53:39.600
It's nonsense.
- These are your words.
00:53:39.800 --> 00:53:43.760
You come up with this game
in which people interrogate you
00:53:44.360 --> 00:53:48.320
they drag up all their trauma,
to help you be interrogated.
00:53:49.920 --> 00:53:51.800
Are we the violent ones, or is it you?
00:53:52.000 --> 00:53:53.080
First of all.
00:53:55.960 --> 00:53:59.720
Anyhow, what's all this bullshit talk?
It's the first time I hear it.
00:54:04.480 --> 00:54:09.320
Your film, it's about the violence
that Iranians in France inflict on each other?
00:54:09.520 --> 00:54:13.760
No. But there's some of that too.
We had discussed this together.
00:54:15.040 --> 00:54:16.080
At my home.
00:54:27.280 --> 00:54:30.440
You'll take that idea to Iran
and say, "I didn't realize it."
00:54:30.640 --> 00:54:31.520
What?
00:54:32.800 --> 00:54:35.400
Thanks to this idea,
this film could even be sold in Iran.
00:54:39.200 --> 00:54:40.360
That's wonderful.
00:54:43.040 --> 00:54:48.480
Your future interrogators
will enjoy watching this film.
00:54:48.960 --> 00:54:51.560
Watching Iranians in France
tearing themselves to bits.
00:54:53.520 --> 00:54:56.360
They'll even talk around, saying,
"We saw this set of films...
00:54:56.960 --> 00:55:01.440
Iranians who had been interrogated,
now interrogating each other."
00:55:03.160 --> 00:55:04.280
Wonderful.
00:55:05.520 --> 00:55:06.800
Thanks a lot.
00:55:07.600 --> 00:55:10.600
All this, thanks to the Islamic Republic.
00:55:12.440 --> 00:55:14.760
Mehran, you think you're an intellectual, right?
00:55:17.080 --> 00:55:18.600
You've read a lot, it seems.
00:55:20.360 --> 00:55:22.640
You think you speak in a refined manner.
00:55:24.280 --> 00:55:29.480
That you're a clever thinker...
-I think this semi-totalitarian system,
00:55:29.760 --> 00:55:33.920
that has been around since the Shah,
it's made us all sick.
00:55:36.200 --> 00:55:37.240
But...
00:55:38.720 --> 00:55:40.400
What do you want me to do to you?
00:55:40.800 --> 00:55:41.960
What do you like?
00:55:45.360 --> 00:55:47.440
What do you want to happen next?
00:55:48.760 --> 00:55:51.480
What?
- I'll do whatever you say.
00:55:53.520 --> 00:55:57.040
You say we choose to be abused.
So go ahead, you choose.
00:55:57.240 --> 00:55:59.680
What form of abuse do you want?
00:58:00.160 --> 00:58:04.320
In a real interrogation room,
if you answer my question with a question,
00:58:04.480 --> 00:58:06.920
you'll be beaten silly, understand?
00:58:08.040 --> 00:58:13.080
If you were interrogated by Saïd Emami,
you'd have no place to breathe.
00:58:16.360 --> 00:58:19.080
What do you plan to do
with this footage you're filming?
00:58:20.760 --> 00:58:22.680
Who will you send it to in Iran?
00:58:23.600 --> 00:58:24.480
Send what?
00:58:24.600 --> 00:58:28.080
Footage of myself being beaten?
- Are you being beaten?
00:58:32.880 --> 00:58:35.560
Your problem is that you're
in your own little world.
00:58:42.200 --> 00:58:48.920
Is it right to make people suffer
in the name of cinema?
00:58:49.080 --> 00:58:53.040
To hurt them again?
To pick at old wounds?
00:58:53.600 --> 00:58:56.000
What gives you the right to do that?
00:58:58.200 --> 00:59:03.480
If you think this "interrogation"
is anything at all like...
00:59:03.720 --> 00:59:06.400
walk up and down.
Don't stand there staring at me.
00:59:10.200 --> 00:59:15.320
This is nothing like the real thing.
There's no stick being stuck up your ass.
00:59:17.720 --> 00:59:20.800
I mean, just saying it...
- Just me saying it?
00:59:20.960 --> 00:59:28.400
This is the same logic you used
with the Bassidji and the mullahs.
00:59:29.040 --> 00:59:30.320
For nothing.
00:59:33.080 --> 00:59:36.760
When you grow the balls to go there
and you end up in prison,
00:59:36.920 --> 00:59:41.760
and one of them films you,
then that'll be a real documentary.
00:59:53.440 --> 00:59:55.960
Anyhow, in this film,
00:59:58.600 --> 01:00:02.440
I try my best to show
what torture and interrogation are.
01:00:02.640 --> 01:00:04.160
Oh, were you tortured today?
01:00:04.920 --> 01:00:08.200
Torture isn't just about beating.
01:00:09.760 --> 01:00:12.240
You laugh in front of me
and you say you're tortured?
01:00:12.960 --> 01:00:15.760
You think it's all a joke,
and you say you're tortured?
01:00:17.240 --> 01:00:19.400
I'm the one being tortured here!
01:00:29.480 --> 01:00:34.960
You think it's all a game?
Like this is a nice chat over a coffee?
01:00:35.400 --> 01:00:37.040
You think it's like that there?
01:00:37.200 --> 01:00:38.280
Keep walking.
01:00:39.520 --> 01:00:43.880
Do you really think the stress
of a real interrogation room,
01:00:44.040 --> 01:00:45.560
let alone the torture,
01:00:45.840 --> 01:00:48.320
do you think it's anything like
what you're experiencing?
01:00:50.120 --> 01:00:51.720
I know it's not comparable.
01:00:52.280 --> 01:00:54.200
Then what's the point of this film?
01:01:00.920 --> 01:01:05.080
You think if you take this film
about interrogation with you to Iran,
01:01:05.240 --> 01:01:09.040
if you show it to the mam
who will be your interrogator...
01:01:09.760 --> 01:01:14.240
Do you think only you will get in trouble?
01:01:17.960 --> 01:01:22.840
Do you believe the regime won't harass
the families of the others in your film?
01:01:23.920 --> 01:01:27.200
I wanted you to stand outside
your kids' school for two minutes,
01:01:27.840 --> 01:01:29.960
you couldn't make a step.
01:01:30.800 --> 01:01:32.840
You refuse to involve your family.
01:01:43.160 --> 01:01:46.760
And you think you're some amazing director?
01:01:46.920 --> 01:01:48.480
I don't claim that.
01:01:50.200 --> 01:01:53.840
Why are you filming people
who've experienced this type of violence?
01:01:58.640 --> 01:02:02.160
Aren't you ashamed
of casting people for this?
01:02:10.520 --> 01:02:13.040
I make an offer, people can refuse.
01:02:13.960 --> 01:02:15.320
They can say no.
01:02:16.200 --> 01:02:19.800
Maybe they can't refuse it.
Maybe they're masochists.
01:02:22.600 --> 01:02:24.640
Do you have to involve them in this?
01:02:27.120 --> 01:02:28.600
Look, it's not so bad
01:02:28.760 --> 01:02:34.120
but just recognize that
you're giving out information on them.
01:02:34.840 --> 01:02:36.800
I'm not informing on anyone.
- So?
01:02:36.960 --> 01:02:41.840
But if you're saying I'm unethical
because of what I'm doing...
01:02:43.440 --> 01:02:45.720
maybe you're right.
If it feels like...
01:02:45.840 --> 01:02:50.160
Your films never give me the impression
that you're either respectful or ethical.
01:02:51.600 --> 01:02:56.360
You say you're an ethical person,
but I've never felt that with your films.
01:02:59.160 --> 01:03:03.200
You take money from the French
so you can cosy up to Bassidji in Iran,
01:03:03.440 --> 01:03:05.720
so you can make shitty "exotic" films.
01:03:05.880 --> 01:03:09.920
You tour Western film festivals,
people tell you "how brave you are",
01:03:10.040 --> 01:03:14.960
then you go back to Iran, like a pathetic...
"Excuse me, I've come to open a dialogue."
01:03:15.240 --> 01:03:17.360
"Please, despite the rioting."
01:03:23.200 --> 01:03:24.280
Walk on.
01:03:33.920 --> 01:03:39.280
See, before it was them toying with you,
now you've flipped the game.
01:03:42.080 --> 01:03:43.040
And?
01:03:43.240 --> 01:03:49.800
Ever since they took your passport,
ever since those three interrogations...
01:03:50.160 --> 01:03:51.800
they weren't even real interrogations...
01:03:51.920 --> 01:03:53.280
Don't stop.
-And ?
01:03:58.360 --> 01:04:00.640
Is this your revenge?
01:04:03.000 --> 01:04:04.120
Against who?
01:04:04.640 --> 01:04:10.160
You want to use the people here
to take power away from the interrogator.
01:04:10.320 --> 01:04:13.000
So you can say,
"I know you better than anyone."
01:04:13.360 --> 01:04:14.640
"I know your game."
01:04:16.320 --> 01:04:18.280
How do you come up with these ideas?
01:04:18.480 --> 01:04:19.680
What else can it be?
01:04:20.760 --> 01:04:23.640
How else could you come up
with the idea for such a film?
01:04:33.640 --> 01:04:38.320
If you at least went to Iran, we'd say,
"He's sticking his neck out too."
01:04:38.440 --> 01:04:39.600
I do want to go!
01:04:39.760 --> 01:04:43.000
We're the only ones sticking our necks out.
You really want to go?
01:04:44.440 --> 01:04:47.080
Why did you change your mind this morning?
01:04:47.680 --> 01:04:49.320
I want to. I just have to...
01:04:49.720 --> 01:04:50.720
What?
01:04:51.360 --> 01:04:54.800
When the time comes,
I'll see if I'm still brave enough.
01:04:55.840 --> 01:05:01.280
If you're not brave enough,
what's the point in filming all this?
01:05:03.440 --> 01:05:06.600
This footage... It'll become a film...
01:05:06.760 --> 01:05:10.040
After making people suffer,
you have to suffer too.
01:05:10.200 --> 01:05:12.640
You should have a taste of it yourself.
01:05:14.920 --> 01:05:19.360
Without it, you just make people suffer
to make your films, as always.
01:05:21.080 --> 01:05:22.240
Don't stop.
01:05:39.960 --> 01:05:43.280
You're reducing my film
to something that's...
01:05:45.720 --> 01:05:48.480
a disgrace.
But it's not just that.
01:05:49.600 --> 01:05:52.200
Defend yourself.
What do you have to say?
01:05:53.080 --> 01:05:55.320
I've said everything.
There's nothing more.
01:05:57.240 --> 01:06:01.960
What you've said isn't worth a damn.
This isn't a film.
01:06:02.160 --> 01:06:06.640
The existence of your film
won't change anything in this world.
01:06:09.520 --> 01:06:11.920
Films like "Bassidji" and "Iranian".
01:06:24.920 --> 01:06:29.120
You could say that about all films.
- No, not all films.
01:06:29.800 --> 01:06:32.520
You can't make such a criticism
of a film that is sincere.
01:06:36.360 --> 01:06:37.360
Any documentary...
01:06:37.520 --> 01:06:42.360
You can make a bad film,
make mistakes, act immorally.
01:06:42.520 --> 01:06:46.520
It happens to everyone.
But you need to admit your mistakes.
01:06:47.000 --> 01:06:48.280
What are my mistakes?
01:06:52.680 --> 01:06:55.280
Your mistake is,
you gave the mullahs credit.
01:06:56.000 --> 01:06:58.360
Your mistake is,
you promoted them.
01:07:00.000 --> 01:07:02.840
Your mistake is,
you made a joke out of interrogation.
01:07:04.320 --> 01:07:06.160
All day long,
you've been giggling.
01:07:09.800 --> 01:07:14.800
Can you imagine bursting out laughing
in front of a real interrogator?
01:07:20.640 --> 01:07:24.120
I didn't "burst out laughing."
I laughed a few times.
01:07:29.760 --> 01:07:34.600
Look, you're stopped again,
a real interrogator would have broken your knees.
01:07:44.800 --> 01:07:47.840
When will you admit it?
- What?
01:07:49.680 --> 01:07:52.520
That this isn't cinema.
This isn't a documentary.
01:07:55.720 --> 01:07:57.280
Go to your room.
01:07:57.960 --> 01:07:59.600
Where?
- Where you were before.
01:09:07.440 --> 01:09:12.560
What gave you the right
to ask people to play this game?
01:09:15.080 --> 01:09:18.960
What would you say if this experience
stuck with me for the next 10 years?
01:09:19.680 --> 01:09:22.000
The pain of the last two days?
- Yes.
01:09:26.480 --> 01:09:31.360
Continuing to play this game
will take us to a very dark place.
01:09:48.040 --> 01:09:53.120
If I had to show you my scars,
unleash them on you, that would be awful.
01:09:57.800 --> 01:10:02.600
You lured me into a game
where I don't have the means to go all the way.
01:10:06.120 --> 01:10:09.360
In this game,
I have to constantly seek myself out.
01:10:09.600 --> 01:10:11.360
Seek out my interrogator.
01:10:15.480 --> 01:10:17.480
For you to have your experience.
01:10:19.840 --> 01:10:21.040
What are you thinking?
01:10:21.400 --> 01:10:26.120
You're thinking, "This is cinema.
I'm sowing seeds to create a dialogue."
01:10:26.320 --> 01:10:27.920
"They'll hear Zar's voice."
01:10:28.920 --> 01:10:32.120
You think that next time,
they won't look into our private lives.
01:10:36.200 --> 01:10:38.000
Next time?
- For example...
01:10:38.160 --> 01:10:40.240
That from now on, in interrogations,
01:10:40.400 --> 01:10:43.040
they will no longer stick their noses
in people's private lives.
01:10:43.920 --> 01:10:45.680
They won't conflate things.
01:10:46.720 --> 01:10:48.200
They won't be violent.
01:10:49.600 --> 01:10:51.440
They'll interrogate with humanity.
01:10:53.960 --> 01:10:57.360
That if you go back to Iran,
they'll treat you more humanely.
01:10:57.560 --> 01:11:01.920
Because you finally opened a dialogue.
This film is already a dialogue with them.
01:11:02.120 --> 01:11:03.840
Do you actually think it'll work?
01:11:06.760 --> 01:11:10.200
If you convince me it'll work,
if I manage to believe in it,
01:11:10.480 --> 01:11:13.200
I would thank you
for involving me in this game,
01:11:14.760 --> 01:11:18.600
for making this sacrifice
because it will pay off.
01:11:22.960 --> 01:11:27.000
'Cause the guy will be hit,
thanks to the seeds you have sown.
01:11:27.160 --> 01:11:30.440
But deep inside you
do you think someone will change?
01:11:38.120 --> 01:11:39.720
That something will change?
01:11:43.600 --> 01:11:45.200
That, I don't know.
01:11:46.080 --> 01:11:48.080
In any case, it's a whole system.
01:11:49.280 --> 01:11:50.920
The interrogator is an individual...
01:11:51.080 --> 01:11:58.040
It's really hard, letting out this ugly,
violent part of myself.
01:11:58.480 --> 01:12:02.160
It's hard,
bringing out these parts of myself...
01:12:02.520 --> 01:12:06.200
parts of myself that break principles,
01:12:06.560 --> 01:12:08.400
that let you be so violent to someone.
01:12:08.960 --> 01:12:10.640
Being irrational and violent.
01:12:12.720 --> 01:12:16.120
I don't think it's possible
to dialogue with someone at that point.
01:12:17.480 --> 01:12:19.520
You mean a real-life interrogator?
- Yes.
01:12:23.040 --> 01:12:26.920
Just seeing myself
after these last two days scares me!
01:12:29.520 --> 01:12:32.880
How could an interrogator look at himself?
01:12:33.080 --> 01:12:37.480
Look back at his 20 years
of work as an interrogator?
01:12:38.400 --> 01:12:39.600
Through your film?
01:12:42.960 --> 01:12:44.600
How can that change him?
01:12:46.400 --> 01:12:49.880
By seeing himself.
-But how can you make him look at himself?
01:12:52.720 --> 01:12:53.840
He doesn't see himself.
01:12:54.440 --> 01:12:57.800
Maybe if you have faith
that he can change,
01:12:57.960 --> 01:13:02.400
if you have faith,
you should also give him this chance.
01:13:05.480 --> 01:13:08.640
That's my reasoning.
Maybe I'm wrong, as you think.
01:13:08.800 --> 01:13:11.320
And maybe I'm seriously wrong, but...
01:13:13.640 --> 01:13:18.640
The only thing that worries me now
is how you feel hurt.
01:13:19.600 --> 01:13:21.360
And it's also true that...
01:13:22.440 --> 01:13:25.040
the fact I'm disturbed
has no impact on how you feel.
01:13:25.920 --> 01:13:26.920
Well, that's it !
01:13:27.600 --> 01:13:29.600
That's good, because it breaks you.
01:13:33.680 --> 01:13:35.200
This is how you get crushed.
01:13:43.200 --> 01:13:46.000
I even enjoyed crushing you,
with the things I've said.
01:13:47.360 --> 01:13:49.400
You feel bad, and that's good!
01:13:54.840 --> 01:13:56.640
But you hurt me, yes.
01:14:00.480 --> 01:14:02.240
Even if you tried to avoid it.
01:14:03.240 --> 01:14:11.040
I didn't try to avoid it.
A project like this brings out a lot of pain.
01:14:15.040 --> 01:14:18.640
Are you angry?
- I don't know if I'm me or the interrogator.
01:14:19.280 --> 01:14:20.840
Should I stop being the interrogator?
01:14:21.280 --> 01:14:22.960
As you wish.
- Am I done now?
01:14:37.600 --> 01:14:41.200
I hurt you.
- You end up loathing yourself.
01:14:45.840 --> 01:14:47.640
It's hard being like that.
01:14:48.320 --> 01:14:50.520
Do you regret it?
- No, I don't regret it.
01:14:51.520 --> 01:14:52.680
No, not at all.
01:14:53.360 --> 01:14:56.600
I said you made me suffer
to make you falter, to break you.
01:14:56.760 --> 01:14:58.640
To see if I was on the right track.
01:15:04.360 --> 01:15:09.440
The most terrifying thing is that
if it lasted three weeks, I could have become
01:15:09.800 --> 01:15:11.880
physically violent with you.
01:15:12.040 --> 01:15:14.800
There were things I was visualising.
01:15:16.160 --> 01:15:20.960
Maybe you can't imagine this,
but I saw myself raping you.
01:15:22.480 --> 01:15:24.120
You mean you saw yourself...?
01:15:24.280 --> 01:15:25.640
I could imagine doing it.
01:15:25.840 --> 01:15:27.320
Doing it yourself?
- Yes.
01:15:28.440 --> 01:15:31.400
During these two days,
I didn't dare do it.
01:15:31.560 --> 01:15:33.880
I didn't take things further, but...
01:15:38.520 --> 01:15:44.280
I could've gotten violent and wild
to the point of doing it.
01:15:44.600 --> 01:15:46.760
If I kept going in the same direction.
01:15:56.320 --> 01:15:59.320
I was beginning to convince myself
that you're a spy.
01:16:00.040 --> 01:16:03.360
What?
- Through force of repetition.
01:16:03.840 --> 01:16:05.400
Violence breeds violence.
01:16:05.520 --> 01:16:08.600
By repeating it,
you end up believing it.
01:16:09.960 --> 01:16:11.760
Were you starting to believe?
01:16:15.520 --> 01:16:16.560
Seriously, yes.
01:16:45.640 --> 01:16:48.720
At times, it was repeating an experience
from your own life.
01:16:50.360 --> 01:16:52.080
In some respects.
01:16:53.800 --> 01:16:59.360
You were inspired by your own experience.
- Yes, they question you very directly...
01:16:59.520 --> 01:17:03.520
What?
- He delves into your life story.
01:17:04.400 --> 01:17:07.320
Besides that,
they stripped me and filmed me naked.
01:17:07.440 --> 01:17:08.480
Really?
01:17:13.280 --> 01:17:15.520
On the pretext of a medical exam, but...
01:17:39.720 --> 01:17:41.440
Who were they ? Women ?
01:17:44.400 --> 01:17:48.480
Yes, but before that,
Judge Mortazavi asked me :
01:17:48.680 --> 01:17:53.720
"Stand up, turn around.
Tell me how you fuck. How does it start?"
01:17:57.840 --> 01:18:00.480
And because I didn't say anything...
- What?
01:18:00.640 --> 01:18:04.800
Because I answered nothing,
he sent me to the medical examiner.
01:18:05.840 --> 01:18:09.760
The examination consisted in
getting me naked and filming.
01:18:15.400 --> 01:18:17.200
It wasn't a simple check-up.
01:18:36.400 --> 01:18:39.760
The doctor penetrated me
so violently with her fingers,
01:18:39.920 --> 01:18:41.920
I couldn't walk for three days.
01:18:42.600 --> 01:18:48.240
For that event,
I was looking for something similar.
01:18:48.840 --> 01:18:52.400
To act out with you
what I had experienced.
01:18:53.600 --> 01:18:56.840
Part of it was improvised.
01:19:00.920 --> 01:19:02.400
Did you want to get me naked?
01:19:07.240 --> 01:19:09.400
I didn't have a thought-out idea.
01:19:11.080 --> 01:19:15.120
I just wanted to see how far you'd go.
01:19:18.120 --> 01:19:20.840
What do you think will happen
if I take this film to Iran?
01:19:22.080 --> 01:19:25.600
Maybe you'll be able to open a dialogue.
01:19:25.760 --> 01:19:27.680
A dialogue without any outcome.
01:19:29.760 --> 01:19:30.920
Because they are what they are.
01:19:36.080 --> 01:19:37.120
But at least...
01:19:39.200 --> 01:19:40.680
it becomes a movie.
01:19:52.920 --> 01:19:57.000
