Musician Sorie Kondi, blind from birth, has been called Sierra Leone's Stevie Wonder, but he's still trying to make it as a world musician. Sorie worries about the future of his 14-year-old daughter, Zeinab. He manages to make enough as a busker to pay for her education, but keeping Zeinab out of trouble is more difficult. She lives with her cousins, who have all had to leave school early because of pregnancy. Life asked Sorie to help us make a road movie looking at what's happening with girls' education around the country 10 years after civil war.
'There is a continuous challenge of trying to strike a balance in the film[s]...[The films] can be used successfully in stimulating a discussion amongst the youth about the negative aspects of such a life as well as an exploration of alternatives.' Teboho Moja, Clinical Professor of Higher Education, New York University

WEBVTT
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:04.999
Progress and development can
be measured and monitored.
00:00:05.000 --> 00:00:09.999
That was the idea behind the millennium development
goals. But often it\'s people on the streets
00:00:10.000 --> 00:00:14.999
who can really tell the difference.
Especially those who love to listen
00:00:15.000 --> 00:00:19.999
and then tell you about
it or even sing about it.
00:00:20.000 --> 00:00:25.000
[music]
00:00:50.000 --> 00:00:54.999
[non-English narration]
00:00:55.000 --> 00:00:59.999
Singing in Sierra Leone. Sometimes
it\'s to help work along,
00:01:00.000 --> 00:01:04.999
sometimes it\'s the
soundtrack to a lazy day.
00:01:05.000 --> 00:01:10.000
But sometimes it\'s a story.
00:01:15.000 --> 00:01:20.000
[music]
00:01:30.000 --> 00:01:34.999
Sorie Kondi(ph), Sierra Leone\'s
steady wonder is on iTunes
00:01:35.000 --> 00:01:39.999
and YouTube but still struggling
to make it. Foreign acclaim
00:01:40.000 --> 00:01:44.999
does not pay his bills. Sorie
pays eight dollars a month rent
00:01:45.000 --> 00:01:49.999
by basking the streets of the
capital Freetown. His wife Sally
00:01:50.000 --> 00:01:54.999
is also blind. She makes
and sell soap to help out.
00:01:55.000 --> 00:01:59.999
One day, sometime good at.
00:02:00.000 --> 00:02:08.000
[music]
00:02:15.000 --> 00:02:19.999
Sorie Kondi takes his name from
his instrument, the Kondi,
00:02:20.000 --> 00:02:24.999
a handmade phone piano
with an electronic twist.
00:02:25.000 --> 00:02:29.999
[sil.]
00:02:30.000 --> 00:02:34.999
Basking the streets also helps
keep his daughter at school.
00:02:35.000 --> 00:02:39.999
[music]
00:02:40.000 --> 00:02:41.000
Getting 14 year old (inaudible)
00:02:41.001 --> 00:02:44.999
through school is a big struggle for Sorie.
00:02:45.000 --> 00:02:49.999
Primary education is free in Sierra
Leone but there are extra fees
00:02:50.000 --> 00:02:54.999
demanded by poorly paid
teachers and other costs.
00:02:55.000 --> 00:02:59.999
I\'m not feeling good. The school charges
haven\'t been paid. They\'ve not paid what?
00:03:00.000 --> 00:03:04.999
School charges. School fees. They have
not yet been paid. How much? 32,000.
00:03:05.000 --> 00:03:09.999
32,000. Okay, finish.
00:03:10.000 --> 00:03:14.999
Sport is on Monday. I haven\'t got
to sports till. Play sports?
00:03:15.000 --> 00:03:17.999
Yes, Monday. Monday. The (inaudible)
00:03:18.000 --> 00:03:19.999
is 10,000. 10,000.
00:03:20.000 --> 00:03:24.999
Somehow Sorie
00:03:25.000 --> 00:03:26.999
always finds the money.
But keeping (inaudible)
00:03:27.000 --> 00:03:29.999
out of trouble is more difficult.
00:03:30.000 --> 00:03:34.999
When did you get pregnant?
Zynap(ph) lives with her cousins
00:03:35.000 --> 00:03:39.999
who have all left school
early because of pregnancy.
00:03:40.000 --> 00:03:44.999
Zynap is not safe. Look at
what\'s happening in this house.
00:03:45.000 --> 00:03:49.999
Her cousins only made it up
00:03:50.000 --> 00:03:54.999
to form two and got pregnant.
So I do worry that some day
00:03:55.000 --> 00:03:59.999
it would happen to her. You see.
00:04:00.000 --> 00:04:04.999
Sorie Kondi and the MDGs,
millennium development goals
00:04:05.000 --> 00:04:09.999
not an RNB band but goals set by world
leaders meeting at the U.N. in 2000.
00:04:10.000 --> 00:04:14.999
Zynap\'s future depends
on two of these goals.
00:04:15.000 --> 00:04:19.999
Education and women\'s empowerment. We ask
Sorie Kondi to help us make a road movie
00:04:20.000 --> 00:04:24.999
looking at what\'s happening with girls\'
education around the country ten years
00:04:25.000 --> 00:04:29.999
after civil war.
00:04:30.000 --> 00:04:32.999
Sorie\'s trusted aide is
23 year old (inaudible)
00:04:33.000 --> 00:04:34.999
who helped with production
00:04:35.000 --> 00:04:39.999
on Sorie\'s first album. There are
problems with Sorie\'s old amplifier.
00:04:40.000 --> 00:04:44.999
But Fodies(ph) found him a
brand-new Chinese made amp.
00:04:45.000 --> 00:04:53.000
[sil.]
00:04:55.000 --> 00:04:59.999
Fodie lost both of his parents in the civil war. He
survived as a street kid till Jesuits took him in
00:05:00.000 --> 00:05:04.999
and put him through primary
and secondary education.
00:05:05.000 --> 00:05:09.999
Now, he\'s saving to go to university, an education
success story maybe a role model for Zynap.
00:05:10.000 --> 00:05:18.000
[music]
00:05:20.000 --> 00:05:24.999
Sorie Kondi has barely ventured out of
Freetown since the civil war started
00:05:25.000 --> 00:05:29.999
18 years ago. It\'s a two
week trip around the country
00:05:30.000 --> 00:05:33.999
just Sorie Fodie P, (inaudible)
00:05:34.000 --> 00:05:35.000
and whoever else they pick up on the way.
00:05:35.001 --> 00:05:37.999
(inaudible)
00:05:38.000 --> 00:05:39.999
,
00:05:40.000 --> 00:05:44.999
He\'s a primary schoolteacher. What\'s
making him angry goes to teachers.
00:05:45.000 --> 00:05:49.999
It\'s estimated the
government has been paying
00:05:50.000 --> 00:05:54.999
the salaries of 30,000 phantom teachers
who don\'t exist. The money going,
00:05:55.000 --> 00:05:59.999
who knows where. Those teachers
are a drain on the budget
00:06:00.000 --> 00:06:03.999
but the government has now started a role call of teachers
to make sure the money is spent properly. (inaudible)
00:06:04.000 --> 00:06:05.000
says it\'s an urgent problem.
00:06:05.001 --> 00:06:09.999
Teachers do retire.
00:06:10.000 --> 00:06:13.999
Some die. What (inaudible)
00:06:14.000 --> 00:06:15.000
,
00:06:15.001 --> 00:06:19.999
They still maintain their names
in the register. The money goes
00:06:20.000 --> 00:06:24.999
in their pocket forgetting the fact that they need to delete those
names from the register. So there are ghost teachers all over.
00:06:25.000 --> 00:06:29.999
Sierra Leone spends almost 4%
00:06:30.000 --> 00:06:34.999
of its GDP on education. Sorie is beginning to
wonder how much of it finds its way to the children.
00:06:35.000 --> 00:06:37.999
This (inaudible)
00:06:38.000 --> 00:06:39.999
not used to touring anymore.
00:06:40.000 --> 00:06:44.999
I\'ll stop now. I need to rest.
00:06:45.000 --> 00:06:49.999
[sil.]
00:06:50.000 --> 00:06:54.999
Even though Sorie\'s village is just
a few hours away from Freetown,
00:06:55.000 --> 00:06:59.999
it\'s three years since he\'s been back.
00:07:00.000 --> 00:07:04.999
What\'s better? Bring up your
daughter in Freetown or here?
00:07:05.000 --> 00:07:09.999
Well,
00:07:10.000 --> 00:07:14.999
I prefer bringing up my
daughter in Freetown.
00:07:15.000 --> 00:07:19.999
Even though there are so many
problems for her in Freetown,
00:07:20.000 --> 00:07:24.999
at least, as I am there,
because that\'s where I live.
00:07:25.000 --> 00:07:29.999
I can always solve them.
00:07:30.000 --> 00:07:34.999
[sil.]
00:07:35.000 --> 00:07:39.999
One of the problems for
girls in rural areas
00:07:40.000 --> 00:07:44.999
is the long walks to school.
But they\'re lucky.
00:07:45.000 --> 00:07:49.999
Over a quarter of a million children don\'t go to
primary school at all and most of them are girls.
00:07:50.000 --> 00:07:54.999
[sil.]
00:07:55.000 --> 00:07:59.999
Sorie Kondi\'s village
00:08:00.000 --> 00:08:04.999
is Mangay Loko.
00:08:05.000 --> 00:08:13.000
[non-English narration]
00:08:20.000 --> 00:08:24.999
Okay, this is my father.
00:08:25.000 --> 00:08:33.000
[music]
00:08:50.000 --> 00:08:54.999
Back home,
00:08:55.000 --> 00:08:59.999
Sorie is a success story.
00:09:00.000 --> 00:09:04.999
His old friend Hassan used
to be a small time trader.
00:09:05.000 --> 00:09:09.999
Hassan did pass the school exams
but no more. Now he\'s a UU.
00:09:10.000 --> 00:09:14.999
Unqualified, untrained teacher.
The villagers pay him
00:09:15.000 --> 00:09:19.999
what they can when they can, offer is not much.
Almost half of Sierra Leone\'s teachers are UUs
00:09:20.000 --> 00:09:24.999
and often have second jobs to survive.
00:09:25.000 --> 00:09:29.999
No repairs have been done to the
school buildings since 1976.
00:09:30.000 --> 00:09:38.000
[non-English narration]
00:09:40.000 --> 00:09:44.999
What Sorie learns
00:09:45.000 --> 00:09:49.999
here has little incentive for Hassan to train as a
teacher. There just aren\'t enough well paid jobs
00:09:50.000 --> 00:09:54.999
although the government is
reviewing teachers pay.
00:09:55.000 --> 00:09:59.999
Three years ago, Hassan was
accepted into a training program.
00:10:00.000 --> 00:10:04.999
He has the letter. He\'s just waiting for
confirmation of funding. Unfortunately,
00:10:05.000 --> 00:10:09.999
he\'s been waiting three years.
00:10:10.000 --> 00:10:14.999
Since I applied, I got this acceptance
letter. It\'s been about three years.
00:10:15.000 --> 00:10:19.999
It\'s to go to the training college
to get qualified as a teacher.
00:10:20.000 --> 00:10:24.999
I didn\'t get an answer.
00:10:25.000 --> 00:10:29.999
I am trained that we get
development in our village.
00:10:30.000 --> 00:10:34.999
I pray that with education,
things will be better for you.
00:10:35.000 --> 00:10:39.999
All of you.
00:10:40.000 --> 00:10:44.999
So not must encouragement
from Sorie\'s home village.
00:10:45.000 --> 00:10:49.999
He\'s starting to think there
are no easy solutions.
00:10:50.000 --> 00:10:54.999
I want one day to grow up
00:10:55.000 --> 00:10:59.999
because Sierra Leone is not easy.
00:11:00.000 --> 00:11:04.999
One day, if I go abroad I\'ll be happy.
00:11:05.000 --> 00:11:09.999
I want to do something
proper for Sierra Leone.
00:11:10.000 --> 00:11:15.000
[music]
00:11:20.000 --> 00:11:24.999
We had stories of schools down the road.
00:11:25.000 --> 00:11:29.999
Sorie is off to learn more.
On the way, Mohammed.
00:11:30.000 --> 00:11:34.999
He\'s a motor bike taxi driver and former
student of one of the oldest schools
00:11:35.000 --> 00:11:39.999
in Sierra Leone. They are all
on their way to Mateboi.
00:11:40.000 --> 00:11:44.999
There are
00:11:45.000 --> 00:11:49.999
no road signs.
00:11:50.000 --> 00:11:54.999
But the driver does have
an escort of sorts.
00:11:55.000 --> 00:11:59.999
The school here has an impressive list
00:12:00.000 --> 00:12:04.999
of former pupils including
some major public figures.
00:12:05.000 --> 00:12:10.000
Sorie Kondi wants to put on a performance
but the kids get their first.
00:12:15.000 --> 00:12:23.000
[music]
00:12:25.000 --> 00:12:29.999
Emma lives in Freetown.
00:12:30.000 --> 00:12:34.999
Pre-primary education
00:12:35.000 --> 00:12:39.999
has seen a huge increase in pupils here.
It\'s up by half.
00:12:40.000 --> 00:12:44.999
Now the school has 425 students
but only five teachers
00:12:45.000 --> 00:12:49.999
and three classrooms.
If you could see them,
00:12:50.000 --> 00:12:54.999
you would see that the children
are having difficulties.
00:12:55.000 --> 00:12:59.999
They have no desks and have to put
the books on their laps to write.
00:13:00.000 --> 00:13:04.999
Half the classes are under mango trees.
There are just not enough buildings.
00:13:05.000 --> 00:13:09.999
So no benches then. They
do have benches to sit on
00:13:10.000 --> 00:13:14.999
but don\'t have anything to write on. So
what about the school\'s distinguished
00:13:15.000 --> 00:13:19.999
all boy network. Sorie
asks the obvious question.
00:13:20.000 --> 00:13:24.999
Mr. Headmaster, these people in high places
00:13:25.000 --> 00:13:29.999
so what have they done to help the school?
00:13:30.000 --> 00:13:34.999
These people, these people have not made any
effort to move us from under the mango tree.
00:13:35.000 --> 00:13:39.999
That is why we are still under the
mango tree. A platform the government,
00:13:40.000 --> 00:13:44.999
it\'s up to the local people
to move these children.
00:13:45.000 --> 00:13:49.999
I had a better education and because
we had the facilities in school,
00:13:50.000 --> 00:13:54.999
we had enough desk to write on. These
days, children use their lap to write on.
00:13:55.000 --> 00:13:59.999
That doesn\'t help their writing skills.
00:14:00.000 --> 00:14:04.999
When the rains come, the problems really
start. Children from the mango tree classrooms
00:14:05.000 --> 00:14:09.999
pile into the school building classrooms
and the entire school comes to a halt.
00:14:10.000 --> 00:14:14.999
For nine year old Fatema that means
losing up to 40 days a year of school.
00:14:15.000 --> 00:14:19.999
When I come to school in the morning,
00:14:20.000 --> 00:14:24.999
and it rains heavily, my books and
uniform get completely soaked.
00:14:25.000 --> 00:14:29.999
[music]
00:14:30.000 --> 00:14:33.999
As Sorie leaves (inaudible)
00:14:34.000 --> 00:14:35.000
of buildings.
00:14:35.001 --> 00:14:39.999
A reminder of civil war. Over
1200 schools were destroyed.
00:14:40.000 --> 00:14:44.999
[music]
00:14:45.000 --> 00:14:49.999
And in contrast, the new
roads have reconstruction
00:14:50.000 --> 00:14:55.000
which takes us to Koidu, the
center of blood diamonds.
00:15:10.000 --> 00:15:14.999
Koidi is keeping up with the news.
00:15:15.000 --> 00:15:19.999
He\'s a glutton for knowledge.
There is money around here
00:15:20.000 --> 00:15:24.999
and money can be a problem as
Sorie\'s next encounter shows.
00:15:25.000 --> 00:15:29.999
Sia Elizabeth Tongu(ph)
00:15:30.000 --> 00:15:34.999
belongs to a woman\'s group which
campaigns against teenage marriage.
00:15:35.000 --> 00:15:39.999
[non-English narration]
00:15:40.000 --> 00:15:44.999
How is Kono? Fine. How is
the woman\'s group doing?
00:15:45.000 --> 00:15:49.999
The group is doing fine. It is doing fine.
00:15:50.000 --> 00:15:54.999
Yes.
00:15:55.000 --> 00:15:59.999
Young girls face a lot of challenges.
They\'re concerned about teenage marriages,
00:16:00.000 --> 00:16:04.999
early marriages with the Mafia.
00:16:05.000 --> 00:16:09.999
Umm… people with money will lure them out
of school. It still happens and in fact,
00:16:10.000 --> 00:16:14.999
I have a secondary school I
talked to the institute.
00:16:15.000 --> 00:16:19.999
What we do is we call the parents to
meetings so we can all deliberate together
00:16:20.000 --> 00:16:24.999
and see how we can stop all
of these, these children.
00:16:25.000 --> 00:16:29.999
I mean, imagine babies having babies.
It\'s, it\'s really a serious problem
00:16:30.000 --> 00:16:34.999
and then also they drop out of school because they,
they cannot continue with school once they get married
00:16:35.000 --> 00:16:39.999
and get stuck in this marital affairs.
In fact, the young boys
00:16:40.000 --> 00:16:44.999
in school are now pregnating more girls
00:16:45.000 --> 00:16:49.999
than the older men. So that
too is a serious problem
00:16:50.000 --> 00:16:54.999
in the community. There
is a law that schoolboys
00:16:55.000 --> 00:16:59.999
who make girls pregnant must stay
away from school while the girls do.
00:17:00.000 --> 00:17:04.999
And the government is planning to help
girls by adding more female teachers.
00:17:05.000 --> 00:17:09.999
But there are no easy solutions.
00:17:10.000 --> 00:17:14.999
Mariamma(ph) didn\'t get a chance to finish her
schooling. At 16, her parents wanted to marry her off
00:17:15.000 --> 00:17:19.999
to an older man. She ran away but
at the end, she did marry him
00:17:20.000 --> 00:17:24.999
and have three kids. Like many girls in
Sierra Leone, Mariaama was married before
00:17:25.000 --> 00:17:29.999
she was 18 which is illegal here.
Now, ten years on,
00:17:30.000 --> 00:17:34.999
she\'s been divorced and her husband has
claimed back the bride money and expenses
00:17:35.000 --> 00:17:39.999
from her family. Seeing as your father,
00:17:40.000 --> 00:17:44.999
your parents were the ones
who arranged your marriage.
00:17:45.000 --> 00:17:49.999
They should have helped you out.
00:17:50.000 --> 00:17:54.999
Not left you to subject all out alone.
00:17:55.000 --> 00:17:59.999
Why when bad things happen,
00:18:00.000 --> 00:18:04.999
do they leave you to
fend for yourself? Why?
00:18:05.000 --> 00:18:09.999
I don\'t know.
00:18:10.000 --> 00:18:18.000
[music]
00:18:35.000 --> 00:18:39.999
Back on the road, teenage pregnancy
Sorie has heard nothing yet.
00:18:40.000 --> 00:18:44.999
[music]
00:18:45.000 --> 00:18:49.999
16 year old Mami Musa(ph)
her mother and stepfather
00:18:50.000 --> 00:18:54.999
need a lift back to their village.
00:18:55.000 --> 00:18:59.999
Do you go to school? Yeah.
What form are you? Form three.
00:19:00.000 --> 00:19:04.999
Form three. Do you know about
girls who get pregnant at school?
00:19:05.000 --> 00:19:09.999
Mm-hmm. You just started school,
00:19:10.000 --> 00:19:14.999
how many kids of pregnancy do you know of?
00:19:15.000 --> 00:19:19.999
Don\'t be shy.
00:19:20.000 --> 00:19:24.999
Don\'t be shy. Answer me. Can you
hear me but you\'re not answering.
00:19:25.000 --> 00:19:29.999
Yes, I can hear you. Yes.
00:19:30.000 --> 00:19:34.999
She just started school. How many
kids of pregnancy do you know of?
00:19:35.000 --> 00:19:39.999
Many. Well, how many?
00:19:40.000 --> 00:19:44.999
More than 40. 50.
00:19:45.000 --> 00:19:49.999
Are these kids, you really know? I
don\'t want you to lie? It\'s not a lie.
00:19:50.000 --> 00:19:54.999
[sil.]
00:19:55.000 --> 00:19:59.999
Kenema the economic heart
of eastern Sierra Leone,
00:20:00.000 --> 00:20:04.999
the country\'s diamond trading center.
00:20:05.000 --> 00:20:09.999
[non-English narration]
00:20:10.000 --> 00:20:14.999
Juliette is a primary schoolteacher,
00:20:15.000 --> 00:20:19.999
volunteer radio journalist
and a single mother.
00:20:20.000 --> 00:20:28.000
[music]
00:20:35.000 --> 00:20:40.000
Juliette runs a youth program and opens
the phone lines every Saturday morning.
00:20:50.000 --> 00:20:54.999
I most of the time try an open phone line.
00:20:55.000 --> 00:20:59.999
I ask people to contribute where they ask
questions about the teenage pregnancy
00:21:00.000 --> 00:21:04.999
and most questions that\'s
used to come to our studio
00:21:05.000 --> 00:21:09.999
whenever I\'m presenting this program
people say uh… the, the teenagers
00:21:10.000 --> 00:21:14.999
themselves are responsible, you know,
for their problems they usually face.
00:21:15.000 --> 00:21:19.999
That\'s umm… they don\'t listen to their parents.
They always abscond home. When they ask,
00:21:20.000 --> 00:21:24.999
they ask to go to school.
They skip from school.
00:21:25.000 --> 00:21:27.999
The ones who live with all opportunities,
so most of the time, the (inaudible)
00:21:28.000 --> 00:21:29.999
, goods of the street
00:21:30.000 --> 00:21:34.999
and just live their own life.
I blame the parents.
00:21:35.000 --> 00:21:39.999
The guardians blame the teenagers
themselves and now blame
00:21:40.000 --> 00:21:44.999
also the schools that this
teenager is attending.
00:21:45.000 --> 00:21:49.999
We\'re on our way to Tiwai island,
00:21:50.000 --> 00:21:54.999
Sierra Leone\'s river
island wildlife sanctuary.
00:21:55.000 --> 00:21:59.999
There is someone, who
wants to talk to Sorie.
00:22:00.000 --> 00:22:08.000
[music] s
00:22:25.000 --> 00:22:29.999
Momodu(ph) is a boat man
00:22:30.000 --> 00:22:34.999
transferring tourists to Tiwai island. He\'s spent a
lot of money on his daughter\'s secondary education.
00:22:35.000 --> 00:22:39.999
His daughter\'s
00:22:40.000 --> 00:22:45.000
belly business or pregnancy has been a disappointment
especially as it involved her teacher.
00:22:50.000 --> 00:22:54.999
I need
00:22:55.000 --> 00:22:59.999
to feel better of her first. Right
now, I\'m not happy with her.
00:23:00.000 --> 00:23:04.999
[sil.]
00:23:05.000 --> 00:23:09.999
That\'s how it is.
00:23:10.000 --> 00:23:14.999
The story behind my pregnancy is that I was
going to school and I suddenly get pregnant.
00:23:15.000 --> 00:23:19.999
I was in love with my teacher a long time.
00:23:20.000 --> 00:23:24.999
Since I was in form one.
00:23:25.000 --> 00:23:29.999
[non-English narration]
00:23:30.000 --> 00:23:34.999
He helped me pass my exams
00:23:35.000 --> 00:23:39.999
and paid for my practical
fees and other things.
00:23:40.000 --> 00:23:44.999
When I told him that I
was pregnant, he said,
00:23:45.000 --> 00:23:49.999
don\'t tell me that. He said, if
I was willing, he had the money
00:23:50.000 --> 00:23:54.999
so I could have an abortion. I said
no, because some friends have died
00:23:55.000 --> 00:23:59.999
because of abortion. I
prefer to give birth.
00:24:00.000 --> 00:24:04.999
When Millicent reported her story to the police,
she was told the teacher was already in custody
00:24:05.000 --> 00:24:09.999
on similar charges of sex with
a minor, another schoolgirl.
00:24:10.000 --> 00:24:14.999
Two weeks later Momodu, her father,
heard the teacher had been released
00:24:15.000 --> 00:24:19.999
and was back teaching at the school.
No one sure why.
00:24:20.000 --> 00:24:24.999
I feel bad for the father of the girl.
00:24:25.000 --> 00:24:29.999
I don\'t even know what to say. The
police and the school authorities
00:24:30.000 --> 00:24:34.999
ganged up against the
father to release this man.
00:24:35.000 --> 00:24:39.999
And the police must have taken a bribe.
I don\'t understand anything.
00:24:40.000 --> 00:24:44.999
Back to Freetown, where Fodie will be
00:24:45.000 --> 00:24:49.999
helping Sorie record his new album. I
think education is very, very important.
00:24:50.000 --> 00:24:54.999
Because if it hadn\'t been for education,
00:24:55.000 --> 00:24:59.999
I would not be what I\'m today. Though the fact that I do
not have anything, nobody can come and fool me easily.
00:25:00.000 --> 00:25:04.999
I know all what is going on. Not only Sierra
Leone but in all the rest of the world.
00:25:05.000 --> 00:25:09.999
Well, if I have a daughter,
00:25:10.000 --> 00:25:14.999
I would make sure that I monitor her
properly. If she goes to school,
00:25:15.000 --> 00:25:19.999
I would make sure everyday that I
see how she\'s doing in school.
00:25:20.000 --> 00:25:24.999
Whether she\'s always punctual, whether
she takes her class work seriously.
00:25:25.000 --> 00:25:29.999
There is a lot riding on Sorie
Kondi\'s new album. His career
00:25:30.000 --> 00:25:34.999
and Zynap\'s future.
00:25:35.000 --> 00:25:39.999
Zynap is my child. But she has
a mind of her own. Even though
00:25:40.000 --> 00:25:44.999
I really hope she finishes
her studies, it\'s up to her.
00:25:45.000 --> 00:25:49.999
I pray to God that she
finishes her education
00:25:50.000 --> 00:25:54.999
because I believe it will be good for her.
If I get money,
00:25:55.000 --> 00:25:59.999
I would send her to college.
If I get money,
00:26:00.000 --> 00:26:05.000
I believe God will provide.
