THE CORRIDOR shows the inner-workings and challenges of San Francisco’s Five Keys Charter School − the first high school of its kind in the United States that provides incarcerated adults the opportunity to earn a high school diploma to prepare them for successful reintegration into their communities. Designed upon the premise that the key to reintegration is education, Five Keys Charter School strives to create alternatives to the revolving door of incarceration. Enrollment is mandatory for all incarcerated adults who never received a high school diploma. In addition to classes that range from algebra to civics, the school also offers lessons in art and meditation. For many of the students, the experience validates their humanity. As these adults begin to think about turning their lives around, THE CORRIDOR invites viewers to ask: is education the first step along the pathway to restorative justice?
Educational Media Reviews Online (EMRO) | Reviewed by Margaret M. Reed, Riley-Hickingbotham Library, Ouachita Baptist University
"When the San Francisco County Jail launched its Five Keys Charter School, it was more than an experiment. It has become a model for restorative justice.
The Corridor takes viewers down the halls of this unique learning environment – the first high school in the nation built inside an adult jail – and explores the enormous effort required to make it work. Inmates there who do not hold a high school diploma are automatically enrolled. They participate in a holistic learning experience designed to prepare them for re-entry into society – essential academic subjects alongside vocational training and group counseling. This educational approach has translated into lower recidivism and inspired correctional facilities throughout the country to make charter high schools a centerpiece of their rehabilitation programming.
Beyond detailing the school’s operation, The Corridor effectively captures the human impact of educating the imprisoned. From multiple vantage points – students, teachers, and correctional officers – the film probes the root causes of incarceration and their unrelenting grip. It profiles those who triumph as well as those who relapse.
Highly recommended for all libraries, The Corridor is an excellent resource for courses in education, criminal justice, and sociology."
The Boston Globe | Peter Keough, Globe Correspondent
"The Corridor does not offer a rosy picture of the program or make sweeping claims of success. It does offer compelling profiles of those involved — teachers and corrections officers as well as students. [...] Near the end of The Corridor is a metaphorical shot — prisoners in orange jumpsuits separated by bars from the black graduation gowns they are about to don. Their lessons in overcoming hopelessness have paid off."

18
00:01:54.350 --> 00:01:58.720
I believe that I can make up

that hadn\'t been made yet

I\'m very street smart,
25

but I don\'t know how to live life.
26
00:02:24.150 --> 00:02:26.010
I don\'t know how to keep a house.
27
00:02:26.010 --> 00:02:28.080
I don\'t know how to have,
28
00:02:28.080 --> 00:02:29.160
you know, go to work every day.
29
00:02:29.160 --> 00:02:32.343
I don\'t know how to do all
that without lots of drugs.

00:02:33.500 --> 00:02:35.276
31
00:02:35.276 --> 00:02:36.748
Good morning, gentlemen.
32
00:02:36.748 --> 00:02:38.040
33
00:02:38.040 --> 00:02:39.220
34
00:02:39.220 --> 00:02:41.480
Please prepare your students
for deployments of class
35
00:02:41.480 --> 00:02:43.013
in the next five minutes.
36
00:02:43.013 --> 00:02:46.280
(pencil sharpener grinds)

00:02:46.280 --> 00:02:47.879
38
00:02:47.879 --> 00:02:49.629
All right, thank you.
39
00:02:50.561 --> 00:02:52.221
40
00:02:52.221 --> 00:02:53.054
(buzzer blaring)
41
00:02:53.054 --> 00:02:56.637
(everyone talking at once)
42
00:02:58.550 --> 00:02:59.550
43
00:03:00.556 --> 00:03:03.103
(inmates chattering)
44
00:03:03.103 --> 00:03:05.113
45
00:03:06.764 --> 00:03:09.560
be behind your ears,
46
00:03:09.560 --> 00:03:10.810
not in your hands.
47
00:03:10.810 --> 00:03:12.649
Tuck in all tee shirts.
48
00:03:12.649 --> 00:03:13.620
(metal detector beeps)
49
00:03:13.620 --> 00:03:14.615
50
00:03:14.615 --> 00:03:16.110
so I can see at the top of your socks.
51
00:03:16.110 --> 00:03:17.080
What\'s tucked in there?
52
00:03:17.080 --> 00:03:18.005
53
00:03:18.005 --> 00:03:18.870
54
00:03:18.870 --> 00:03:20.305
what are you bringing all
this stuff to school for?
55
00:03:20.305 --> 00:03:21.138
56
00:03:21.138 --> 00:03:22.280
57
00:03:25.090 --> 00:03:27.370
58
00:03:27.370 --> 00:03:29.010
and we\'re doing this job within the jail,
59
00:03:29.010 --> 00:03:31.160
but this is not the
job that we want to do.
60
00:03:32.270 --> 00:03:33.980
We think that it\'s important for the state
61
00:03:33.980 --> 00:03:36.760
to do a better job with
educating its young
62
00:03:36.760 --> 00:03:39.460
and providing better services
or resources for people.
63
00:03:41.740 --> 00:03:45.100
But, since this is the
situation we can\'t forget about
64
00:03:45.100 --> 00:03:48.440
the men and the women that
are already incarcerated.
65
00:03:48.440 --> 00:03:51.021
(somber music)
66
00:03:51.021 --> 00:03:54.688
(chattering, doors closing)
67
00:03:58.076 --> 00:03:59.330
68
00:03:59.330 --> 00:04:00.911
69
00:04:00.911 --> 00:04:04.244
(electronic door shuts)
70
00:04:06.801 --> 00:04:09.384
(somber music)
71
00:04:21.795 --> 00:04:23.678
72
00:04:23.678 --> 00:04:24.678
here you go.
73
00:04:26.190 --> 00:04:29.670
74
00:04:29.670 --> 00:04:32.495
We have some very good classes to offer.
75
00:04:32.495 --> 00:04:34.590
This semester, we\'re doing
76
00:04:34.590 --> 00:04:36.400
how to start your own business,
77
00:04:36.400 --> 00:04:38.366
a bike repair class,
78
00:04:38.366 --> 00:04:39.290
we\'re doing
79
00:04:39.290 --> 00:04:42.500
a food and safety culinary
job certificate program.
80
00:04:42.500 --> 00:04:45.420
Got a lot of good things going on here.
81
00:04:45.420 --> 00:04:47.930
If you decide that you
don\'t want to go to school
82
00:04:47.930 --> 00:04:50.010
or you don\'t want a program,
83
00:04:50.010 --> 00:04:52.430
the consequences unfortunately are that
84
00:04:52.430 --> 00:04:55.280
you will be placed on restricted housing.
85
00:04:55.280 --> 00:04:57.843
So they want you to sign up for something.
86
00:05:00.590 --> 00:05:03.480
fully functioning high school
87
00:05:03.480 --> 00:05:07.303
and a high school diploma to
adults that are incarcerated.
88
00:05:10.360 --> 00:05:13.402
They come to the education
corridor to begin their journey,
89
00:05:13.402 --> 00:05:14.983
receiving a diploma.
90
00:05:18.110 --> 00:05:21.850
Our students are with us
anywhere from days to years.
91
00:05:21.850 --> 00:05:24.920
So they\'re awaiting trial;
they have not been sentenced.
92
00:05:24.920 --> 00:05:26.340
Some of them will be released,
93
00:05:26.340 --> 00:05:28.290
some of them the charges will be dropped.
94
00:05:28.290 --> 00:05:30.120
Others, there\'ll be transferred over
95
00:05:30.120 --> 00:05:32.033
to the penitentiary to the prison.
96
00:05:34.180 --> 00:05:35.300
But in the meantime,
97
00:05:35.300 --> 00:05:38.683
they are in the jail
with us, being educated.
98
00:05:41.015 --> 00:05:46.015
(handcuffs clattering,
walkie-talkie sounding)
99
00:05:47.750 --> 00:05:49.760
want to do their time;
100
00:05:49.760 --> 00:05:52.510
they don\'t want to participate in school.
101
00:05:52.510 --> 00:05:54.730
Realistically, we\'re in a position
102
00:05:54.730 --> 00:05:57.250
that we\'re not asking inmates,
103
00:05:57.250 --> 00:05:59.740
we\'re telling them to do something.
104
00:05:59.740 --> 00:06:02.280
And then we have to deal
with a lot of backlash
105
00:06:02.280 --> 00:06:03.973
from them going to school.
106
00:06:07.510 --> 00:06:11.260
basis, in this place
107
00:06:12.300 --> 00:06:13.580
with the very
108
00:06:14.640 --> 00:06:16.960
essence of government.
109
00:06:16.960 --> 00:06:20.340
And we also start to understand
110
00:06:20.340 --> 00:06:23.500
that we actually do want to
be treated as individuals.
111
00:06:23.500 --> 00:06:26.490
The fact that you\'re sitting
in a classroom right now,
112
00:06:26.490 --> 00:06:29.770
is evidence that it\'s
not the same everywhere
113
00:06:29.770 --> 00:06:32.010
and that you\'re being treated differently.
114
00:06:32.010 --> 00:06:32.980
115
00:06:32.980 --> 00:06:33.876
116
00:06:33.876 --> 00:06:34.709
117
00:06:34.709 --> 00:06:37.281
you gon get disciplined
118
00:06:37.281 --> 00:06:38.370
119
00:06:38.370 --> 00:06:40.570
the list around saying,
120
00:06:40.570 --> 00:06:42.667
do you want to go to school or do you not?
121
00:06:42.667 --> 00:06:44.135
Ma, it would be (beep) short,
122
00:06:44.135 --> 00:06:46.483
probably be like 10 people, a class.
123
00:06:47.500 --> 00:06:50.640
funded for this program.
124
00:06:50.640 --> 00:06:51.600
Then what would you have?
125
00:06:51.600 --> 00:06:53.490
They wouldn\'t care whether we was here now
126
00:06:53.490 --> 00:06:54.890
because it\'s money.
127
00:06:54.890 --> 00:06:56.690
For every head in here, I bet you.
128
00:06:56.690 --> 00:06:57.580
It\'s money for it.
129
00:06:57.580 --> 00:06:59.420
But like he said, I don\'t have a problem
130
00:06:59.420 --> 00:07:01.310
with being here learning education,
131
00:07:01.310 --> 00:07:02.940
but whose education is it really?
132
00:07:02.940 --> 00:07:04.270
What did we go back to?
133
00:07:04.270 --> 00:07:05.210
Most inmates in here,
134
00:07:05.210 --> 00:07:07.770
we don\'t have nothing to do with the 1692,
135
00:07:07.770 --> 00:07:10.670
you know, because man, it
ain\'t, it ain\'t the truth.
136
00:07:10.670 --> 00:07:12.060
It ain\'t the real, it\'s his story.
137
00:07:12.060 --> 00:07:15.053
It\'s not the story, you know, his story.
138
00:07:16.923 --> 00:07:20.006
(inmates chattering)
139
00:07:27.885 --> 00:07:31.420
young generation will rebel
140
00:07:31.420 --> 00:07:34.640
just because they don\'t have a choice.
141
00:07:34.640 --> 00:07:38.430
The fact that Five Keys
just put them in school
142
00:07:38.430 --> 00:07:40.530
and told them that\'s what they have to do.
143
00:07:43.000 --> 00:07:46.340
Being incarcerated and going to school,
144
00:07:46.340 --> 00:07:48.180
it\'s very difficult.
145
00:07:48.180 --> 00:07:50.120
You have to, it takes a strong,
146
00:07:50.120 --> 00:07:52.604
very strong mind and mentality.
147
00:07:52.604 --> 00:07:55.630
(inmates chattering)
148
00:07:55.630 --> 00:07:59.310
When you put, put in a
situation like this, people did,
149
00:07:59.310 --> 00:08:01.600
they haven\'t went to school;
they\'re scared of school.
150
00:08:01.600 --> 00:08:05.510
A lot of those guys are
scared to be in an environment
151
00:08:05.510 --> 00:08:08.170
where other gangbangers will see
152
00:08:08.170 --> 00:08:12.160
that they don\'t really
know what\'s four plus four.
153
00:08:12.160 --> 00:08:16.313
They don\'t read well,
and that\'s a weakness.
154
00:08:17.951 --> 00:08:21.034
(inmates chattering)
155
00:08:25.800 --> 00:08:28.350
Maybe if I was younger, when
they first put me in school,
156
00:08:28.350 --> 00:08:30.800
I probably would\'ve, I
would\'ve fought them hard.
157
00:08:32.610 --> 00:08:34.563
I thought I knew everything.
158
00:08:35.650 --> 00:08:39.930
And here I am with no marketable skills.
159
00:08:39.930 --> 00:08:41.700
I definitely feel like
160
00:08:41.700 --> 00:08:45.033
I\'m at the bottom of every opportunity.
161
00:08:45.933 --> 00:08:49.016
(inmates chattering)
162
00:08:53.673 --> 00:08:56.173
(car driving)
163
00:08:59.380 --> 00:09:00.952
(inmates chattering)
164
00:09:00.952 --> 00:09:03.702
(metal jingling)
165
00:09:07.050 --> 00:09:08.300
didn\'t give me any choice.
166
00:09:08.300 --> 00:09:10.190
I woke up one morning and I was in school.
167
00:09:10.190 --> 00:09:11.790
168
00:09:11.790 --> 00:09:13.506
169
00:09:13.506 --> 00:09:15.010
I wasn\'t here I was here for-
170
00:09:15.010 --> 00:09:15.843
I wasn\'t mad about it.
171
00:09:15.843 --> 00:09:17.580
I would\'ve probably opted for it anyway,
172
00:09:17.580 --> 00:09:19.623
because I\'ve always wanted
to further my education.
173
00:09:21.195 --> 00:09:24.112
(zipper unzipping)
174
00:09:26.080 --> 00:09:27.400
175
00:09:27.400 --> 00:09:29.848
I\'ll do it for right
here, put the point here,
176
00:09:29.848 --> 00:09:30.740
and there like that.
177
00:09:30.740 --> 00:09:33.920
on the corner, all right?
178
00:09:33.920 --> 00:09:36.470
mom was a heroin addict.
179
00:09:37.730 --> 00:09:39.130
They took me when I was eight months old.
180
00:09:39.130 --> 00:09:40.790
I was in foster care till I was five,
181
00:09:40.790 --> 00:09:42.470
and then I was adopted.
182
00:09:42.470 --> 00:09:44.300
And then throughout school,
I started causing problems,
183
00:09:44.300 --> 00:09:45.750
like little problems in class.
184
00:09:45.750 --> 00:09:47.320
And so they started with,
they put me on Ritalin
185
00:09:47.320 --> 00:09:49.963
when I was like seven
years old, to calm me down.
186
00:09:51.380 --> 00:09:53.020
My behavior was a wreck.
187
00:09:53.020 --> 00:09:55.460
I was all over the place all the time.
188
00:09:55.460 --> 00:09:57.221
So I started failing.
189
00:09:57.221 --> 00:09:59.440
tell you guys a secret.
190
00:09:59.440 --> 00:10:01.900
Don\'t draw a line, shade it,
191
00:10:01.900 --> 00:10:04.340
do the shade first,
it\'ll come out perfect.
192
00:10:04.340 --> 00:10:05.740
193
00:10:07.110 --> 00:10:09.240
194
00:10:09.240 --> 00:10:10.393
but I was doing drugs.
195
00:10:13.010 --> 00:10:14.610
I\'ve been on drugs for 20 years.
196
00:10:15.760 --> 00:10:16.593
I\'m 31.
197
00:10:17.760 --> 00:10:20.220
through the drawings,
198
00:10:20.220 --> 00:10:21.410
you\'ll get better.
199
00:10:21.410 --> 00:10:22.243
You\'ll see.
200
00:10:24.440 --> 00:10:26.000
201
00:10:26.000 --> 00:10:27.187
because I know that if I go out there
202
00:10:27.187 --> 00:10:28.310
at this time and I use again,
203
00:10:28.310 --> 00:10:29.490
I\'m probably going to end up
204
00:10:29.490 --> 00:10:31.640
being back in here for
the rest of my life.
205
00:10:33.120 --> 00:10:35.953
(sorrowful music)
206
00:10:42.190 --> 00:10:45.740
207
00:10:45.740 --> 00:10:48.190
from the time I was eight years old,
208
00:10:48.190 --> 00:10:50.910
up until the present day,
209
00:10:50.910 --> 00:10:52.710
they found themselves in the system.
210
00:10:54.300 --> 00:10:57.240
So, I always have just
211
00:10:57.240 --> 00:10:59.240
never wanted to be in a place like this.
212
00:11:00.410 --> 00:11:02.260
But I don\'t allow those feelings
213
00:11:02.260 --> 00:11:04.030
or those frustrations or that anger
214
00:11:04.030 --> 00:11:07.940
to prevent me from doing
the job that I need to do;
215
00:11:07.940 --> 00:11:10.690
the job that\'s in front of
me the job that\'s very real.
216
00:11:12.150 --> 00:11:13.440
I\'m thankful to have two parents
217
00:11:13.440 --> 00:11:17.190
that raised me with a
specific goal in mind,
218
00:11:17.190 --> 00:11:21.320
go to college and try to
find some type of work that,
219
00:11:21.320 --> 00:11:23.933
you can help yourself and
help others at the same time.
220
00:11:25.480 --> 00:11:28.960
But education was key in my household.
221
00:11:28.960 --> 00:11:31.020
1.2, the power to rule.
222
00:11:31.020 --> 00:11:32.050
We\'re gonna begin there.
223
00:11:32.050 --> 00:11:32.940
I\'ll start off with the reading.
224
00:11:32.940 --> 00:11:33.773
We\'ll pass it around.
225
00:11:33.773 --> 00:11:35.555
I\'ll be putting notes
on the board as well.
226
00:11:35.555 --> 00:11:40.390
So the power to rule can be
gained or lost in many ways.
227
00:11:40.390 --> 00:11:42.570
And now like I\'ve been here teaching
228
00:11:42.570 --> 00:11:46.180
for Five Keys for 11 years.
229
00:11:46.180 --> 00:11:48.850
Filled with tales of violent overthrow,
230
00:11:48.850 --> 00:11:50.350
or the violent overthrow of...
231
00:11:51.523 --> 00:11:53.688
(footsteps)
232
00:11:53.688 --> 00:11:55.750
233
00:11:55.750 --> 00:11:57.800
Cause they, when I was in
there today, they said,
234
00:11:57.800 --> 00:11:59.110
Captain Paulson is writing a poem.
235
00:11:59.110 --> 00:12:00.527
And I said, oh I was like,
we\'re reciting a poem?
236
00:12:00.527 --> 00:12:01.775
I thought I was getting a speech.
237
00:12:01.775 --> 00:12:03.160
what were you gonna address?
238
00:12:03.160 --> 00:12:04.616
239
00:12:04.616 --> 00:12:06.450
240
00:12:06.450 --> 00:12:08.550
countrymen, lend me your ear.
241
00:12:08.550 --> 00:12:11.013
I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him.
242
00:12:12.210 --> 00:12:13.597
243
00:12:16.991 --> 00:12:17.824
244
00:12:20.088 --> 00:12:21.088
245
00:12:26.760 --> 00:12:29.810
246
00:12:29.810 --> 00:12:32.310
person coming into custody
247
00:12:32.310 --> 00:12:34.763
has a fifth grade reading level.
248
00:12:37.112 --> 00:12:41.053
The key to reintegration is education.
249
00:12:44.098 --> 00:12:46.681
In 2002, the sheriff introduced
250
00:12:48.280 --> 00:12:50.360
a radical concept for rehabilitation,
251
00:12:50.360 --> 00:12:54.490
which is let\'s do an entire charter school
252
00:12:55.350 --> 00:12:56.833
inside of the jail.
253
00:12:57.810 --> 00:12:58.830
First ones in the state,
254
00:12:58.830 --> 00:13:01.980
first ones in the nation
to really do it this way.
255
00:13:01.980 --> 00:13:04.610
Once I\'m not worried about food,
256
00:13:04.610 --> 00:13:06.270
I\'m not worried about clothing,
257
00:13:06.270 --> 00:13:07.370
I\'m not worried about shelter,
258
00:13:07.370 --> 00:13:10.160
I\'m not worried about
any of my basic needs,
259
00:13:10.160 --> 00:13:14.060
I can start thinking
about my social needs.
260
00:13:14.060 --> 00:13:17.170
And then I can start
thinking about myself.
261
00:13:17.170 --> 00:13:20.053
There are deputies who
don\'t buy into this change.
262
00:13:21.090 --> 00:13:22.160
Why would we do this?
263
00:13:22.160 --> 00:13:25.070
Why would we make more work for ourselves?
264
00:13:25.070 --> 00:13:29.350
You\'re charged with bringing order.
265
00:13:29.350 --> 00:13:32.440
There is the teacher in
the Five Keys school,
266
00:13:32.440 --> 00:13:34.800
whole bunch of civilians.
267
00:13:34.800 --> 00:13:37.200
And who\'s going to keep
those civilians safe, who?
268
00:13:37.200 --> 00:13:38.086
Greg?
269
00:13:38.086 --> 00:13:38.919
270
00:13:38.919 --> 00:13:42.593
the thin line of order.
271
00:13:47.019 --> 00:13:50.352
(police radio sounding)
272
00:13:56.812 --> 00:14:00.395
(police attendance taking)
273
00:14:09.020 --> 00:14:10.920
274
00:14:10.920 --> 00:14:13.430
you\'re going to tell your inmates,
275
00:14:13.430 --> 00:14:16.700
that they need to use the
restroom before going to class.
276
00:14:16.700 --> 00:14:18.350
They\'re not going to have any restroom
277
00:14:18.350 --> 00:14:20.040
for the first half hour.
278
00:14:20.040 --> 00:14:21.770
No inmates should be coming to the door.
279
00:14:21.770 --> 00:14:23.780
That\'s an officer safety thing,
280
00:14:23.780 --> 00:14:28.063
so the deputies will decide
who goes in and when.
281
00:14:28.960 --> 00:14:29.793
Anything else?
282
00:14:31.610 --> 00:14:33.510
Take care, have a good watch, be safe.
283
00:14:36.212 --> 00:14:38.629
(footsteps)
284
00:14:39.670 --> 00:14:41.010
The old philosophy was,
285
00:14:41.010 --> 00:14:43.173
oh, just lock he inmates behind the bars.
286
00:14:44.170 --> 00:14:47.978
Run the jail by the strictest of rules.
287
00:14:47.978 --> 00:14:50.670
about this already, right?
288
00:14:50.670 --> 00:14:52.660
289
00:14:52.660 --> 00:14:55.160
that are very lenient,
290
00:14:55.160 --> 00:14:56.864
very pro inmate.
291
00:14:56.864 --> 00:14:59.000
(footsteps, handcuffs jingling)
292
00:14:59.000 --> 00:15:00.710
I would hope that most of our deputies
293
00:15:00.710 --> 00:15:03.033
fall in the middle of that spectrum.
294
00:15:05.985 --> 00:15:08.170
down to the Five Keys school
295
00:15:08.170 --> 00:15:11.640
and do the presentation
to the new teachers.
296
00:15:11.640 --> 00:15:12.473
297
00:15:12.473 --> 00:15:16.830
Jersey city, I got beaten up.
298
00:15:16.830 --> 00:15:18.053
It was a fag-bashing.
299
00:15:19.784 --> 00:15:22.370
I went to the local police station.
300
00:15:22.370 --> 00:15:23.980
The guy behind the desk said,
301
00:15:23.980 --> 00:15:25.730
if I had a nickel for every fag
302
00:15:25.730 --> 00:15:27.400
that got beaten up in this city,
303
00:15:27.400 --> 00:15:28.493
I\'d be a rich man.
304
00:15:30.430 --> 00:15:32.660
I decided that a peace officer
305
00:15:32.660 --> 00:15:34.860
should stand for something
better than that.
306
00:15:36.490 --> 00:15:39.460
And the only way that I
could enable that change,
307
00:15:39.460 --> 00:15:41.904
was to be part of the change myself.
308
00:15:41.904 --> 00:15:44.430
(footsteps)
309
00:15:44.430 --> 00:15:49.400
working with educators.
310
00:15:49.400 --> 00:15:51.900
That\'s, what I think makes
this place very unique.
311
00:15:55.310 --> 00:15:57.590
So now we\'re on to classroom safety.
312
00:15:57.590 --> 00:15:59.910
Deputies are in charge of everything
313
00:15:59.910 --> 00:16:01.790
that\'s happening in this corridor.
314
00:16:01.790 --> 00:16:03.940
If you\'re having a class
and you\'re lecturing
315
00:16:03.940 --> 00:16:05.350
and they swing the door open
316
00:16:05.350 --> 00:16:07.130
and they cuff up three of your students
317
00:16:07.130 --> 00:16:09.200
and they\'d take them out,
that\'s not our business.
318
00:16:09.200 --> 00:16:12.647
They\'re here to keep us safe
and to keep the students safe.
319
00:16:12.647 --> 00:16:15.380
And this is your duress button right here.
320
00:16:15.380 --> 00:16:16.990
And there should always be a clear path.
321
00:16:16.990 --> 00:16:19.280
When you\'re teaching
to your duress button,
322
00:16:19.280 --> 00:16:21.230
you need to be able to hit that button.
323
00:16:22.340 --> 00:16:24.480
If you fumble the ball
on one of these things,
324
00:16:24.480 --> 00:16:27.870
while you\'re teaching, that
could be your jail clearance.
325
00:16:27.870 --> 00:16:31.933
Don\'t wear solid blue,
solid red, and never orange.
326
00:16:32.850 --> 00:16:36.130
And the cell phones, no joke,
327
00:16:36.130 --> 00:16:37.790
your cell phone gets away
from you in this jail,
328
00:16:37.790 --> 00:16:39.590
you\'re done; you\'re not coming back.
329
00:16:40.610 --> 00:16:42.430
If this lock gets away from you,
330
00:16:42.430 --> 00:16:44.220
that\'s another one, you\'re done.
331
00:16:44.220 --> 00:16:46.520
So here we have hand sanitizer.
332
00:16:46.520 --> 00:16:48.410
We got a guy that took
this out of the classroom.
333
00:16:48.410 --> 00:16:49.490
This is what he said to me,
334
00:16:49.490 --> 00:16:52.630
Ms. Bravo, I didn\'t know
this was in my underwear.
335
00:16:52.630 --> 00:16:54.150
No joke.
336
00:16:54.150 --> 00:16:56.140
They will drink this.
337
00:16:56.140 --> 00:16:58.083
They will make a fireball with this.
338
00:17:00.930 --> 00:17:02.420
Any questions on that?
339
00:17:02.420 --> 00:17:05.120
students from various gangs,
340
00:17:05.120 --> 00:17:06.970
are there any high risk,
341
00:17:06.970 --> 00:17:08.510
potentially violent students in class?
342
00:17:08.510 --> 00:17:09.775
343
00:17:09.775 --> 00:17:10.866
All of \'em.
344
00:17:10.866 --> 00:17:12.330
This is a jail.
345
00:17:12.330 --> 00:17:13.686
This is a jail and
346
00:17:13.686 --> 00:17:15.500
in every single classroom,
347
00:17:15.500 --> 00:17:17.740
you have every single type of crime.
348
00:17:17.740 --> 00:17:21.763
We have triple murder
down to dealing marijuana.
349
00:17:22.940 --> 00:17:24.440
350
00:17:24.440 --> 00:17:27.777
we have approximately 22 gangs.
351
00:17:27.777 --> 00:17:30.550
white gang in the jail.
352
00:17:30.550 --> 00:17:35.550
So their symbol is the big
WP, white power, the swastika.
353
00:17:35.800 --> 00:17:37.730
Eighty eight; that\'s their number.
354
00:17:37.730 --> 00:17:40.730
We have some guys here, tattooed
in the back of their heads.
355
00:17:42.060 --> 00:17:44.910
Okay then we have in
Norteños, they\'re red.
356
00:17:44.910 --> 00:17:46.415
They\'re the mainstream.
357
00:17:46.415 --> 00:17:49.720
They\'re sprinkled throughout the corridor.
358
00:17:49.720 --> 00:17:52.460
Big problems with them
right now in the jail.
359
00:17:52.460 --> 00:17:54.943
So movement; movement is the most,
360
00:17:55.890 --> 00:17:57.160
I don\'t want to say dangerous,
361
00:17:57.160 --> 00:17:59.880
but challenging part of the day, always.
362
00:17:59.880 --> 00:18:02.430
So movement is the time where
they\'re bringing them in,
363
00:18:02.430 --> 00:18:05.173
from the pods into the education corridor.
364
00:18:06.768 --> 00:18:08.780
(chattering)
365
00:18:08.780 --> 00:18:10.490
line it up for school,
366
00:18:10.490 --> 00:18:11.693
line it up for school.
367
00:18:13.468 --> 00:18:15.885
(chattering)
368
00:18:18.630 --> 00:18:22.180
member in the wrong classroom
369
00:18:22.180 --> 00:18:24.290
and we have, it goes off.
370
00:18:24.290 --> 00:18:27.743
just went back inside.
371
00:18:29.250 --> 00:18:32.020
unpredictable and fights occur.
372
00:18:32.020 --> 00:18:34.930
It could be anything from
major gang stuff on the street
373
00:18:34.930 --> 00:18:38.530
to you got a better sticker
on your paper than I did.
374
00:18:38.530 --> 00:18:40.930
You moved the table while
I was trying to write.
375
00:18:43.080 --> 00:18:45.430
We\'ve gotten through a few
semesters without a fight.
376
00:18:45.430 --> 00:18:47.270
It\'s just, they happen.
377
00:18:47.270 --> 00:18:49.370
It\'s disturbing.
378
00:18:49.370 --> 00:18:51.953
(door opening)
379
00:18:53.650 --> 00:18:56.300
380
00:18:56.300 --> 00:18:57.680
If you gotta use the bathroom,
381
00:18:57.680 --> 00:18:59.550
come on out and do it now.
382
00:18:59.550 --> 00:19:00.383
Two at a time.
383
00:19:02.230 --> 00:19:05.800
384
00:19:05.800 --> 00:19:07.480
an effective and efficient classroom,
385
00:19:07.480 --> 00:19:08.840
I have to have a good relationship
386
00:19:08.840 --> 00:19:12.232
with the majority of the
deputies that are there.
387
00:19:12.232 --> 00:19:15.030
(footsteps, metal jingling)
388
00:19:15.030 --> 00:19:16.820
I\'ve had fights in my classroom,
389
00:19:16.820 --> 00:19:18.550
the deputies they rush in
390
00:19:18.550 --> 00:19:20.830
and they exercise the amount of force
391
00:19:20.830 --> 00:19:22.230
that they feel is necessary.
392
00:19:23.800 --> 00:19:25.970
And depending on your perspective,
393
00:19:25.970 --> 00:19:28.290
you might think that it\'s an
abuse of power and authority,
394
00:19:28.290 --> 00:19:29.283
or you might not.
395
00:19:30.580 --> 00:19:32.410
It\'s a painful moment because
396
00:19:34.030 --> 00:19:36.562
there\'s nothing that you can do.
397
00:19:36.562 --> 00:19:39.199
(police radio sounding)
398
00:19:39.199 --> 00:19:40.873
(chains clanking)
399
00:19:40.873 --> 00:19:41.706
400
00:19:45.054 --> 00:19:45.887
Easton.
401
00:19:48.271 --> 00:19:49.104
Jones.
402
00:19:50.329 --> 00:19:52.912
(somber music)
403
00:19:53.790 --> 00:19:57.030
place day after day,
404
00:19:57.030 --> 00:19:59.793
week after week, month after
month, year after year,
405
00:20:01.670 --> 00:20:05.690
as a teacher, as an officer,
406
00:20:05.690 --> 00:20:08.373
when you work in an environment like that,
407
00:20:09.610 --> 00:20:12.683
like you are doing time
to a certain degree.
408
00:20:13.756 --> 00:20:17.089
(electronic door shuts)
409
00:20:22.906 --> 00:20:25.489
(somber music)
410
00:20:30.458 --> 00:20:33.630
411
00:20:33.630 --> 00:20:36.043
it\'s just not instantaneous.
412
00:20:39.810 --> 00:20:42.980
As I look back, probably
when I was 11 years old,
413
00:20:42.980 --> 00:20:44.423
was when I got off track.
414
00:20:45.330 --> 00:20:49.460
Once my father left the house,
I probably became, well,
415
00:20:49.460 --> 00:20:51.973
I actually became a
lot more undisciplined.
416
00:20:53.400 --> 00:20:56.600
I made a contract with
myself when I was 11 and 13,
417
00:20:56.600 --> 00:21:00.120
that I would be in the
streets, selling drugs,
418
00:21:00.120 --> 00:21:03.450
carrying weapons, that I
would be a success at it,
419
00:21:03.450 --> 00:21:06.750
that I wouldn\'t get killed doing it,
420
00:21:06.750 --> 00:21:10.070
and I was going to do
that because the money,
421
00:21:10.070 --> 00:21:12.280
the girls, the cars,
422
00:21:12.280 --> 00:21:15.063
the shiny things on it
really intrigued me.
423
00:21:18.380 --> 00:21:22.168
It was very detrimental
to me educationally,
424
00:21:22.168 --> 00:21:24.390
and as you can see now,
425
00:21:24.390 --> 00:21:26.913
the effects are still lingering.
426
00:21:29.429 --> 00:21:32.429
(melancholic music)
427
00:21:33.977 --> 00:21:36.690
(inmates chattering)
428
00:21:36.690 --> 00:21:37.750
even realize that I was
429
00:21:37.750 --> 00:21:39.450
going in and out as much as I was.
430
00:21:41.310 --> 00:21:42.730
I had no clue how many charters,
431
00:21:42.730 --> 00:21:44.430
how many arrests I\'d actually had.
432
00:21:45.520 --> 00:21:48.080
The more drugs I did,
the harder drugs I did,
433
00:21:48.080 --> 00:21:50.900
the harder my crimes got, the
more twisted my crimes got.
434
00:21:50.900 --> 00:21:53.500
And I never did anything
violent, nothing like that.
435
00:21:54.381 --> 00:21:56.640
But my crimes got smarter
and smarter and smarter
436
00:21:56.640 --> 00:21:59.763
to a point where, don\'t
give me a computer.
437
00:22:01.135 --> 00:22:03.140
438
00:22:03.140 --> 00:22:03.973
439
00:22:03.973 --> 00:22:05.977
contaminating, you know what I mean?
440
00:22:05.977 --> 00:22:08.177
job you\'ve ever had.
441
00:22:09.590 --> 00:22:10.652
442
00:22:10.652 --> 00:22:12.800
(girls laughing)
443
00:22:12.800 --> 00:22:13.830
444
00:22:13.830 --> 00:22:15.637
445
00:22:18.360 --> 00:22:20.370
446
00:22:20.370 --> 00:22:23.163
because I was an addict and
I was out on the street.
447
00:22:26.800 --> 00:22:28.020
I hate it.
448
00:22:28.020 --> 00:22:30.013
I hate it cause that\'s not what I want.
449
00:22:32.805 --> 00:22:35.780
I want to have relationship with my kids.
450
00:22:35.780 --> 00:22:37.410
I have six of them,
451
00:22:37.410 --> 00:22:39.943
two of which I\'ve never
seen, except for at birth.
452
00:22:40.920 --> 00:22:43.950
I have a Facebook relationship
with my kids and that\'s it.
453
00:22:43.950 --> 00:22:45.920
And they know if I\'m not there,
if they don\'t hear from me,
454
00:22:45.920 --> 00:22:47.020
they know I\'m in jail.
455
00:22:49.393 --> 00:22:51.976
(somber music)
456
00:23:02.260 --> 00:23:04.490
457
00:23:04.490 --> 00:23:06.011
that we were looking at yesterday,
458
00:23:06.011 --> 00:23:08.143
the one on the Constitution.
459
00:23:08.980 --> 00:23:11.131
I believe Emily, you were
reading this stuff yesterday.
460
00:23:11.131 --> 00:23:12.440
We talked about the fourth amendment.
461
00:23:12.440 --> 00:23:14.740
So the fourth amendment says that you have
462
00:23:14.740 --> 00:23:17.500
a right against unreasonable
searches or seizures, right?
463
00:23:17.500 --> 00:23:18.500
464
00:23:18.500 --> 00:23:20.780
Okay so is it legal for to someone else
465
00:23:20.780 --> 00:23:23.470
to search your stuff
besides law enforcement?
466
00:23:23.470 --> 00:23:24.730
467
00:23:24.730 --> 00:23:28.120
So we have laws, people break laws, right?
468
00:23:28.120 --> 00:23:30.540
It happens; it\'s not supposed to happen,
469
00:23:30.540 --> 00:23:32.590
but sometimes our government breaks laws
470
00:23:32.590 --> 00:23:33.900
or they violate our rights.
471
00:23:33.900 --> 00:23:35.107
And so that\'s why it\'s
important for us to know them
472
00:23:35.107 --> 00:23:37.240
and be aware of those things.
473
00:23:37.240 --> 00:23:38.670
Okay, so I wanted to highlight that.
474
00:23:38.670 --> 00:23:41.000
And then the last one,
475
00:23:41.000 --> 00:23:43.747
the main story that they
talked about was signing in,
476
00:23:43.747 --> 00:23:47.143
the new education law or a
new education policy, right?
477
00:23:48.280 --> 00:23:49.210
Go ahead.
478
00:23:49.210 --> 00:23:52.173
at seventh grade, okay?
479
00:23:53.049 --> 00:23:56.156
I\'ve only been to high school
here, you know what I mean?
480
00:23:56.156 --> 00:23:57.230
It\'s like.
481
00:23:57.230 --> 00:24:00.580
come from these neighborhoods
482
00:24:00.580 --> 00:24:03.160
and they go to schools that
haven\'t been funded properly,
483
00:24:03.160 --> 00:24:05.720
many of them have left school.
484
00:24:05.720 --> 00:24:06.990
Some will say have been pushed out,
485
00:24:06.990 --> 00:24:08.550
some will say dropped out.
486
00:24:08.550 --> 00:24:11.110
In either seventh grade
or eighth grade, or,
487
00:24:11.110 --> 00:24:13.110
you know, their early high school years.
488
00:24:14.530 --> 00:24:16.200
We\'re dealing with a population,
489
00:24:16.200 --> 00:24:18.850
largely black and Latino,
490
00:24:18.850 --> 00:24:21.893
that has had negative
academic experiences.
491
00:24:23.770 --> 00:24:25.560
I mean what do you expect
is going to happen,
492
00:24:25.560 --> 00:24:28.200
when you\'re sending kids to schools that
493
00:24:29.310 --> 00:24:31.460
aren\'t adequate for educating them.
494
00:24:34.090 --> 00:24:35.940
They\'re adults, they\'ve grown up,
495
00:24:35.940 --> 00:24:38.580
you just cast them aside,
you just ignore them,
496
00:24:38.580 --> 00:24:41.380
you just leave them locked
away in facilities like this.
497
00:24:42.313 --> 00:24:44.470
So what things in society
do you feel that government
498
00:24:44.470 --> 00:24:46.283
needs to focus on the most?
499
00:24:48.189 --> 00:24:49.930
500
00:24:49.930 --> 00:24:52.123
501
00:24:53.910 --> 00:24:58.910
It becomes a systemic problem that robs
502
00:24:59.090 --> 00:25:01.643
a segment of the population
of their potential.
503
00:25:06.851 --> 00:25:09.768
(vehicles driving)
504
00:25:12.682 --> 00:25:15.599
(quiet slow music)
505
00:25:24.470 --> 00:25:28.860
is about hopelessness.
506
00:25:28.860 --> 00:25:32.880
And we\'re going to talk
about hopelessness today
507
00:25:32.880 --> 00:25:35.460
because when you go back out there,
508
00:25:35.460 --> 00:25:38.700
people are gonna put, already
put a strike against you.
509
00:25:38.700 --> 00:25:41.440
They see if you\'ve been incarcerated.
510
00:25:41.440 --> 00:25:44.340
You have been in a bad situation.
511
00:25:44.340 --> 00:25:46.720
They don\'t even know
what your situation was,
512
00:25:46.720 --> 00:25:48.710
but they had already labeled you.
513
00:25:48.710 --> 00:25:50.880
And as a result of labeling you,
514
00:25:50.880 --> 00:25:55.283
it\'s pushing your self esteem,
your self worth further down.
515
00:25:56.252 --> 00:25:57.710
What are some of the things that you do
516
00:25:57.710 --> 00:25:59.712
to sabotage yourself?
517
00:25:59.712 --> 00:26:02.530
sometimes like really bad,
518
00:26:02.530 --> 00:26:05.370
like my boyfriends or whoever.
519
00:26:05.370 --> 00:26:08.080
I mean, and as much as
I talk bad about them,
520
00:26:08.080 --> 00:26:10.380
I\'m talking like 20
times worse about myself.
521
00:26:10.380 --> 00:26:12.010
Like in my head at the same time.
522
00:26:12.010 --> 00:26:12.930
523
00:26:12.930 --> 00:26:14.530
things from these classes
524
00:26:14.530 --> 00:26:15.363
and from these groups,
525
00:26:15.363 --> 00:26:17.440
when I started coming
to jail in this city,
526
00:26:17.440 --> 00:26:18.670
and every time I came in,
527
00:26:18.670 --> 00:26:20.843
I learned a little bit of something else.
528
00:26:22.290 --> 00:26:23.570
Going into the math class at first,
529
00:26:23.570 --> 00:26:25.090
I\'m like, yeah, I am still smart.
530
00:26:25.090 --> 00:26:27.070
I\'m not a failure; I can do
this; I can do something.
531
00:26:27.070 --> 00:26:29.323
I don\'t know what it is,
but I can do something.
532
00:26:30.420 --> 00:26:31.944
533
00:26:31.944 --> 00:26:32.777
(laughter)
534
00:26:32.777 --> 00:26:33.710
Oh, it\'s so bad.
535
00:26:33.710 --> 00:26:35.000
536
00:26:35.000 --> 00:26:36.960
It boosts your self
esteem when you realize
537
00:26:36.960 --> 00:26:38.270
that you can do something, you know,
538
00:26:38.270 --> 00:26:40.650
that you forgot that you
could do, maybe in school
539
00:26:40.650 --> 00:26:43.083
or that you could have
healthy relationships,
540
00:26:43.083 --> 00:26:44.640
or any of that.
541
00:26:44.640 --> 00:26:46.290
542
00:26:46.290 --> 00:26:47.257
I\'ve seen it all.
543
00:26:48.129 --> 00:26:51.712
(building uplifting music)
544
00:27:02.360 --> 00:27:03.800
545
00:27:03.800 --> 00:27:07.503
experience with computers
in the past, in general.
546
00:27:07.503 --> 00:27:09.753
547
00:27:11.830 --> 00:27:13.430
548
00:27:14.610 --> 00:27:15.443
549
00:27:17.085 --> 00:27:18.680
uh,
550
00:27:18.680 --> 00:27:20.563
six and five.
551
00:27:25.580 --> 00:27:27.730
misstepped on something.
552
00:27:27.730 --> 00:27:29.253
That\'s an easy fix though.
553
00:27:31.750 --> 00:27:33.760
554
00:27:33.760 --> 00:27:36.320
bring back vocational programs,
555
00:27:36.320 --> 00:27:39.998
tax millionaires to fund,
ooh that\'s a good one,
556
00:27:39.998 --> 00:27:43.940
tax millionaires to fund more technology.
557
00:27:43.940 --> 00:27:46.410
a ways and make good
558
00:27:46.410 --> 00:27:49.660
legal money and actually
have a legitimate job.
559
00:27:49.660 --> 00:27:52.310
560
00:27:52.310 --> 00:27:54.263
and real time information as you can.
561
00:27:56.982 --> 00:27:59.370
people look at us as just
562
00:27:59.370 --> 00:28:02.190
being nothing or throwing away our lives.
563
00:28:02.190 --> 00:28:03.950
And that kind of thing.
564
00:28:03.950 --> 00:28:05.710
No we\'re not; we\'re still human,
565
00:28:05.710 --> 00:28:09.580
no matter what we do to break
the law and commit crimes,
566
00:28:09.580 --> 00:28:14.234
we still have something in
that state, something good,
567
00:28:14.234 --> 00:28:15.067
you know what I mean?
568
00:28:15.067 --> 00:28:18.460
So we expect or appreciate
somebody who sees that,
569
00:28:18.460 --> 00:28:19.410
who sees past this.
570
00:28:22.420 --> 00:28:25.337
(quiet calm music)
571
00:28:28.247 --> 00:28:31.247
(guards chattering)
572
00:28:32.292 --> 00:28:35.209
(quiet calm music)
573
00:28:39.021 --> 00:28:41.339
574
00:28:41.339 --> 00:28:42.441
575
00:28:42.441 --> 00:28:43.274
576
00:28:43.274 --> 00:28:44.830
577
00:28:44.830 --> 00:28:47.410
how we talked about
578
00:28:47.410 --> 00:28:49.812
the elements of contrast,
579
00:28:49.812 --> 00:28:53.093
and then that\'s how you know
where this is halfway up.
580
00:28:53.093 --> 00:28:53.926
581
00:28:53.926 --> 00:28:55.768
582
00:28:55.768 --> 00:28:56.653
Good work.
583
00:28:59.070 --> 00:29:02.860
584
00:29:02.860 --> 00:29:06.403
My GPA, I almost have all A\'s.
585
00:29:08.380 --> 00:29:11.083
It makes me sad sometimes
when I look back,
586
00:29:12.140 --> 00:29:14.290
but I can\'t focus on
587
00:29:14.290 --> 00:29:17.260
the bottom of the hole
where I was stuck at
588
00:29:17.260 --> 00:29:19.333
because my family needs me.
589
00:29:23.720 --> 00:29:27.137
(phone buttons clicking)
590
00:29:28.134 --> 00:29:33.134
The hardest part of being
incarcerated is being a parent,
591
00:29:33.190 --> 00:29:37.250
where there\'s distance, where
I can\'t personally intervene,
592
00:29:37.250 --> 00:29:38.550
especially with my son.
593
00:29:38.550 --> 00:29:39.410
Wow.
594
00:29:39.410 --> 00:29:42.420
His brother got shot
a couple of years ago,
595
00:29:42.420 --> 00:29:44.860
just as he was turning 16.
596
00:29:44.860 --> 00:29:48.660
And now those people who shot his brother,
597
00:29:48.660 --> 00:29:50.733
they know who he is.
598
00:29:52.100 --> 00:29:55.260
That\'s why I need to be
out there with my son
599
00:29:55.260 --> 00:29:56.870
before it\'s too late.
600
00:29:56.870 --> 00:29:58.529
Well, you know, I believe in you.
601
00:29:58.529 --> 00:29:59.590
I love you.
602
00:29:59.590 --> 00:30:01.420
You know, I\'m your biggest fan.
603
00:30:01.420 --> 00:30:05.760
And my wife told me it is your
fault too, and I know this,
604
00:30:07.434 --> 00:30:09.453
you know, I\'m supposed to be there.
605
00:30:15.500 --> 00:30:17.100
Everyone makes their own choice.
606
00:30:18.380 --> 00:30:22.123
But, when you\'re born into bad choices,
607
00:30:23.080 --> 00:30:27.040
when your great-grandfather
didn\'t have so many options
608
00:30:27.040 --> 00:30:31.532
where the bad choices were
sometimes the best options,
609
00:30:31.532 --> 00:30:33.063
it becomes tradition.
610
00:30:34.534 --> 00:30:37.117
(somber music)
611
00:30:51.190 --> 00:30:52.660
612
00:30:52.660 --> 00:30:54.170
We all have different situations.
613
00:30:54.170 --> 00:30:55.890
614
00:30:55.890 --> 00:30:56.723
615
00:30:56.723 --> 00:30:57.983
616
00:30:57.983 --> 00:30:59.230
and now they\'re taller than me,
617
00:30:59.230 --> 00:31:03.560
now and so, but they
are open to, you know,
618
00:31:03.560 --> 00:31:05.100
knowing me and all that,
you know, and knowing,
619
00:31:05.100 --> 00:31:06.670
but I don\'t have no idea where to start
620
00:31:06.670 --> 00:31:09.771
or on any of it, you know what I mean?
621
00:31:09.771 --> 00:31:12.420
going to want to be,
622
00:31:12.420 --> 00:31:15.270
even Bethany, in your situation,
623
00:31:15.270 --> 00:31:19.347
what you end up is being a
backbone parent to adults, right?
624
00:31:19.347 --> 00:31:20.180
625
00:31:20.180 --> 00:31:22.610
to get there, right?
626
00:31:22.610 --> 00:31:25.750
It\'s just we\'re parents,
you know, forever.
627
00:31:25.750 --> 00:31:26.583
628
00:31:28.320 --> 00:31:29.197
629
00:31:32.550 --> 00:31:36.653
is anybody willing to share
all or part of what they wrote?
630
00:31:38.220 --> 00:31:39.420
What activities, behaviors,
631
00:31:39.420 --> 00:31:41.730
addictions, problems, in
a period of my parenting,
632
00:31:41.730 --> 00:31:43.470
alcoholism, drugs, going out,
633
00:31:43.470 --> 00:31:45.830
anger and violence towards their father,
634
00:31:45.830 --> 00:31:47.480
other men not knowing what to do.
635
00:31:48.440 --> 00:31:49.900
What did I do really well as a parent,
636
00:31:49.900 --> 00:31:51.450
I gave my parents and ex-husbands
637
00:31:51.450 --> 00:31:53.240
and other guardians custody.
638
00:31:53.240 --> 00:31:54.653
I\'m learning to parent now.
639
00:31:55.540 --> 00:31:58.660
What five words best describe
you, what you were like
640
00:31:58.660 --> 00:32:00.950
as a parent before you
went to jail or prison.
641
00:32:00.950 --> 00:32:02.330
Absent, dysfunctional, ashamed,
642
00:32:02.330 --> 00:32:04.340
depressed, fearful, and selfish.
643
00:32:04.340 --> 00:32:06.343
644
00:32:08.050 --> 00:32:08.890
645
00:32:08.890 --> 00:32:12.080
at how we get from where we are now, okay,
646
00:32:12.080 --> 00:32:14.210
to getting our kids up here,
647
00:32:14.210 --> 00:32:16.760
what we want for our kids
when they grow up, right?
648
00:32:19.900 --> 00:32:21.850
have to forgive yourself
649
00:32:21.850 --> 00:32:23.490
and you have to forgive people.
650
00:32:23.490 --> 00:32:26.640
And when you\'re in recovery
and I never understood how,
651
00:32:26.640 --> 00:32:28.360
what forgiving yourself was about
652
00:32:28.360 --> 00:32:29.810
or what forgiving your parents was about
653
00:32:29.810 --> 00:32:30.750
for the things that they did,
654
00:32:30.750 --> 00:32:32.550
until I sat in that parenting class.
655
00:32:34.037 --> 00:32:36.620
(somber music)
656
00:32:48.290 --> 00:32:50.760
657
00:32:50.760 --> 00:32:53.420
and promoted black on black crime.
658
00:32:53.420 --> 00:32:56.660
Me and my guys brought my community
659
00:32:56.660 --> 00:32:59.560
pain, drama, and genocide.
660
00:32:59.560 --> 00:33:02.420
We were young without
direction and ignorant
661
00:33:02.420 --> 00:33:04.720
to the door we were about to open.
662
00:33:04.720 --> 00:33:07.183
I know a lot of guys who
have committed murder,
663
00:33:08.060 --> 00:33:11.233
rape, and crimes against kids.
664
00:33:12.107 --> 00:33:14.340
You need more than school.
665
00:33:14.340 --> 00:33:16.980
You\'re going to need some deep therapy,
666
00:33:16.980 --> 00:33:18.243
some counseling work.
667
00:33:20.370 --> 00:33:23.663
For me, I needed to attack
the demon within myself.
668
00:33:25.410 --> 00:33:28.510
There\'s a program in the
jails that I went through,
669
00:33:28.510 --> 00:33:31.460
that makes you take a
look at your inner self
670
00:33:31.460 --> 00:33:33.578
and face that demon.
671
00:33:33.578 --> 00:33:38.578
RSVP is a restorative
justice program that helps
672
00:33:39.180 --> 00:33:42.840
violent men identify their violence,
673
00:33:42.840 --> 00:33:44.280
that practice violence,
674
00:33:44.280 --> 00:33:46.780
that we don\'t even know that we commit.
675
00:33:46.780 --> 00:33:49.193
And the violence that
we do know we commit.
676
00:33:50.050 --> 00:33:53.799
It helps you to look into
yourself and study yourself
677
00:33:53.799 --> 00:33:58.190
and look for ways to manage yourself.
678
00:33:58.190 --> 00:34:00.960
to come and share her story.
679
00:34:00.960 --> 00:34:04.330
women are brought in,
680
00:34:04.330 --> 00:34:07.020
who have been through different traumas.
681
00:34:07.020 --> 00:34:10.440
Women who have been abused and raped,
682
00:34:10.440 --> 00:34:12.849
whose sons have been murdered.
683
00:34:12.849 --> 00:34:14.923
Their husbands who have been murdered.
684
00:34:16.290 --> 00:34:19.735
685
00:34:19.735 --> 00:34:21.910
when my husband was murdered
686
00:34:23.500 --> 00:34:25.683
and I was full of vengeance and hate.
687
00:34:26.740 --> 00:34:28.570
I want to talk about Irving,
688
00:34:28.570 --> 00:34:31.740
the man who killed my husband,
689
00:34:31.740 --> 00:34:36.240
because at the time, I
put every ounce of energy
690
00:34:36.240 --> 00:34:41.240
into making people view
him as a total monster.
691
00:34:41.900 --> 00:34:45.593
During that trial, I was demonizing him.
692
00:34:46.560 --> 00:34:48.783
I hated that I did that,
693
00:34:50.070 --> 00:34:53.500
that I had done to somebody,
694
00:34:53.500 --> 00:34:57.040
what I would never want done to me.
695
00:34:57.040 --> 00:34:59.293
That I stripped somebody\'s humanity.
696
00:35:00.683 --> 00:35:02.940
697
00:35:02.940 --> 00:35:04.164
698
00:35:04.164 --> 00:35:09.140
to sit down with Irving,
699
00:35:09.140 --> 00:35:10.467
what would you say to him?
700
00:35:12.800 --> 00:35:16.450
a difficult topic for me
701
00:35:16.450 --> 00:35:20.810
because I\'ll never be
allowed to talk to Irving
702
00:35:20.810 --> 00:35:22.803
because it\'s a death row case.
703
00:35:24.410 --> 00:35:27.540
I want to be able to tell Irving,
704
00:35:27.540 --> 00:35:32.370
I know this is not how you
wanted your life to turn out.
705
00:35:32.370 --> 00:35:34.947
I know this isn\'t where you wanted to be.
706
00:35:36.819 --> 00:35:39.736
(reflective music)
707
00:35:49.440 --> 00:35:53.570
the victim goes through them,
708
00:35:53.570 --> 00:35:56.523
then get in and then do
some work on ourselves.
709
00:35:57.730 --> 00:36:00.240
And that\'s probably the hardest part.
710
00:36:00.240 --> 00:36:05.240
that you have in your life,
711
00:36:05.860 --> 00:36:10.760
and how is that impacting
your behavior in violent ways?
712
00:36:14.580 --> 00:36:18.880
hard to be vulnerable
713
00:36:18.880 --> 00:36:22.200
and expose part of
yourself part of your life.
714
00:36:22.200 --> 00:36:26.917
You don\'t want to appear
weak, too weak or sensitive,
715
00:36:26.917 --> 00:36:30.483
When you\'re sitting next
to seven other predators,
716
00:36:31.500 --> 00:36:34.640
you don\'t want to un-predator yourself
717
00:36:34.640 --> 00:36:37.403
around other predators and become prey.
718
00:36:46.850 --> 00:36:47.683
719
00:36:50.090 --> 00:36:51.040
My name is Anthony.
720
00:36:52.440 --> 00:36:56.403
When I was growing up, my
dad, when he would drink,
721
00:36:56.403 --> 00:37:00.743
he would be beat my step-mom
right where I would,
722
00:37:03.290 --> 00:37:06.050
you know, having to like
witness this stuff, right?
723
00:37:06.050 --> 00:37:08.133
And it was like, I learned how to,
724
00:37:09.070 --> 00:37:13.570
I learned how to block out my emotions
725
00:37:13.570 --> 00:37:15.223
for myself at a young age.
726
00:37:16.080 --> 00:37:17.210
And he\'d be beating me.
727
00:37:17.210 --> 00:37:19.550
I\'d just like, was able to do that,
728
00:37:19.550 --> 00:37:22.510
thing where I could switch it
off and just be numb to it.
729
00:37:22.510 --> 00:37:26.186
And when I got older,
730
00:37:26.186 --> 00:37:29.800
it made it easier for me to,
731
00:37:29.800 --> 00:37:32.879
to hurt someone else because,
732
00:37:32.879 --> 00:37:37.450
I could shut out that emotion
733
00:37:39.810 --> 00:37:41.680
of empathy towards someone else.
734
00:37:41.680 --> 00:37:42.730
You know what I mean?
735
00:37:45.839 --> 00:37:48.422
(somber music)
736
00:38:14.442 --> 00:38:15.380
teachers here taught me
737
00:38:15.380 --> 00:38:16.930
how to get algebra, I got my GED,
738
00:38:16.930 --> 00:38:20.163
like within a couple months
of going to the school here.
739
00:38:21.490 --> 00:38:24.067
And I actually like
myself a little bit now.
740
00:38:30.968 --> 00:38:32.870
And they teach you how to
live with other people.
741
00:38:32.870 --> 00:38:35.130
They teach you your social skills.
742
00:38:35.130 --> 00:38:36.290
And they work with people,
743
00:38:36.290 --> 00:38:37.710
mostly who have been addicts
744
00:38:37.710 --> 00:38:39.960
since they were like
teenagers, really young.
745
00:38:42.140 --> 00:38:43.270
Most people dream of going to college,
746
00:38:43.270 --> 00:38:44.540
most people dream of doing whatever,
747
00:38:44.540 --> 00:38:45.850
I dream of going to this program,
748
00:38:45.850 --> 00:38:48.000
just so I can learn
how to do things right.
749
00:38:49.400 --> 00:38:50.950
I have the option to go there.
750
00:38:50.950 --> 00:38:53.740
Like I\'m gonna be able to go
there and it\'s like crazy.
751
00:38:53.740 --> 00:38:56.090
So I better take it now,
while I still have it.
752
00:39:00.188 --> 00:39:03.105
(vehicles driving)
753
00:39:05.870 --> 00:39:10.280
I\'m sober. I\'m going to
program three days a week.
754
00:39:10.280 --> 00:39:12.900
I am working two jobs and
755
00:39:12.900 --> 00:39:14.900
I\'m living in a van in Golden Gate Park.
756
00:39:15.810 --> 00:39:18.330
I\'ve been getting visits
with my youngest son.
757
00:39:18.330 --> 00:39:19.430
And he knew who I was.
758
00:39:21.440 --> 00:39:24.543
He\'s a, he\'s definitely like my child.
759
00:39:24.543 --> 00:39:26.626
(laughs)
760
00:39:27.630 --> 00:39:30.463
My chances for not coming
back, I think are really good.
761
00:39:31.770 --> 00:39:34.460
I want to be, have a
relationship with my son
762
00:39:34.460 --> 00:39:36.270
and not have to worry about going to jail
763
00:39:36.270 --> 00:39:37.903
and having that cut off again.
764
00:39:39.730 --> 00:39:41.400
I can\'t, I can\'t at this point,
765
00:39:41.400 --> 00:39:43.693
hope for anything more than that.
766
00:39:48.758 --> 00:39:53.730
(clock ticking, heartbeat beating)
767
00:39:53.730 --> 00:39:56.820
effort getting a diploma
768
00:39:56.820 --> 00:40:00.823
will affect the DA\'s decision
on when I\'ll get out.
769
00:40:03.750 --> 00:40:07.120
I have a, it\'s a once in
a lifetime opportunity
770
00:40:07.120 --> 00:40:11.383
to show that I\'m different
and I\'m worth another chance.
771
00:40:17.320 --> 00:40:19.110
Everybody wants to be free.
772
00:40:19.110 --> 00:40:21.060
And if you think you\'re going to get free
773
00:40:21.060 --> 00:40:22.050
every time you go to court,
774
00:40:22.050 --> 00:40:23.450
you\'ll probably panic yourself,
775
00:40:23.450 --> 00:40:25.050
because it doesn\'t work like that.
776
00:40:25.050 --> 00:40:26.363
It\'s a long process.
777
00:40:27.237 --> 00:40:30.154
(intriguing music)
778
00:40:31.390 --> 00:40:36.390
The judge and the DA, are
going over my case right now.
779
00:40:36.780 --> 00:40:41.780
And my lawyer is at the same
time trying to convince them,
780
00:40:41.810 --> 00:40:44.733
that I do deserve some leniency.
781
00:40:46.620 --> 00:40:50.320
The leniency would be
me getting out of jail
782
00:40:50.320 --> 00:40:53.470
and being able to go back to my family,
783
00:40:53.470 --> 00:40:54.723
get a job and move on.
784
00:40:55.984 --> 00:40:58.660
on the line methadone-
785
00:40:58.660 --> 00:41:01.550
786
00:41:01.550 --> 00:41:06.550
to the penitentiary for a
minimum of 13 to 15 years.
787
00:41:07.240 --> 00:41:09.907
(solemn music)
788
00:41:13.530 --> 00:41:16.280
If it all goes well,
and according to plan,
789
00:41:16.280 --> 00:41:18.840
and I get some leniency
from the judge and the DA,
790
00:41:18.840 --> 00:41:21.913
immediately upon my release,
I\'ll get employment.
791
00:41:22.960 --> 00:41:26.000
And most of all, make sure
I don\'t have to commit
792
00:41:26.000 --> 00:41:30.130
any type of crime that
will hurt the community,
793
00:41:30.130 --> 00:41:33.273
and put me back inside.
794
00:41:45.870 --> 00:41:48.460
795
00:41:48.460 --> 00:41:50.150
back into your community,
796
00:41:50.150 --> 00:41:52.390
and they need skills and they need tools,
797
00:41:52.390 --> 00:41:54.620
and they need some hope,
798
00:41:54.620 --> 00:41:57.710
or they\'re just going to keep
coming back and re-offending.
799
00:41:57.710 --> 00:41:58.990
800
00:41:58.990 --> 00:42:00.110
801
00:42:00.110 --> 00:42:01.243
802
00:42:01.243 --> 00:42:02.113
803
00:42:02.113 --> 00:42:04.457
804
00:42:04.457 --> 00:42:07.060
805
00:42:07.060 --> 00:42:10.200
Look at the water conditions, all right.
806
00:42:10.200 --> 00:42:12.270
What do you think needs
to go inside, outside?
807
00:42:12.270 --> 00:42:14.313
What type of plants need more sun?
808
00:42:16.220 --> 00:42:18.470
the word key stoning?
809
00:42:20.360 --> 00:42:22.480
On a street level, the term
810
00:42:22.480 --> 00:42:25.150
can also be described as doubling up.
811
00:42:25.150 --> 00:42:26.890
You sell it, you make a profit,
812
00:42:26.890 --> 00:42:29.210
and then you invest that
entire amount of money
813
00:42:29.210 --> 00:42:30.443
to grow your supply.
814
00:42:31.356 --> 00:42:34.150
(tools clink)
815
00:42:34.150 --> 00:42:36.620
the metal detector in here,
816
00:42:36.620 --> 00:42:38.651
or when they exist
they\'re gonna go through.
817
00:42:38.651 --> 00:42:39.973
818
00:42:39.973 --> 00:42:41.390
819
00:42:44.773 --> 00:42:47.356
(metal clanks)
820
00:42:50.452 --> 00:42:52.031
821
00:42:52.031 --> 00:42:53.364
fresh air today.
822
00:42:54.226 --> 00:42:57.023
(cart rolling)
823
00:42:57.023 --> 00:43:00.110
824
00:43:00.110 --> 00:43:01.520
I have a personal interest,
825
00:43:01.520 --> 00:43:02.910
because I\'m the one that did this.
826
00:43:02.910 --> 00:43:04.680
I made this up for you, okay?
827
00:43:04.680 --> 00:43:07.410
But if you tamper, if you
mess with these tools,
828
00:43:07.410 --> 00:43:11.230
I\'m going to take it as an
absolute insult to me personally.
829
00:43:11.230 --> 00:43:12.512
Okay? Fair enough?
830
00:43:12.512 --> 00:43:13.345
831
00:43:13.345 --> 00:43:16.177
keep honest people honest.
832
00:43:16.177 --> 00:43:17.927
All right, all right.
833
00:43:19.869 --> 00:43:20.720
(gears turning)
834
00:43:20.720 --> 00:43:23.448
835
00:43:23.448 --> 00:43:24.781
Is that correct?
836
00:43:26.236 --> 00:43:28.986
(metal clanking)
837
00:43:30.595 --> 00:43:33.428
(distant traffic)
838
00:43:35.045 --> 00:43:37.520
(people chattering)
839
00:43:37.520 --> 00:43:39.330
long have you been back?
840
00:43:39.330 --> 00:43:40.185
841
00:43:40.185 --> 00:43:41.018
842
00:43:41.018 --> 00:43:42.440
843
00:43:42.440 --> 00:43:44.880
a little bit what happened?
844
00:43:44.880 --> 00:43:46.970
you had a lot of plans,
845
00:43:46.970 --> 00:43:47.803
846
00:43:47.803 --> 00:43:48.636
847
00:43:48.636 --> 00:43:50.770
848
00:43:50.770 --> 00:43:52.350
somebody showed up in treatment,
849
00:43:52.350 --> 00:43:54.380
you know, like, like an ex-boyfriend.
850
00:43:54.380 --> 00:43:55.640
He was abusive, blah, blah, blah.
851
00:43:55.640 --> 00:43:58.170
He was actually my
co-defendant on my last case.
852
00:43:58.170 --> 00:43:59.325
853
00:43:59.325 --> 00:44:02.040
854
00:44:02.040 --> 00:44:03.770
And then I, as soon as I
left, like within a day,
855
00:44:03.770 --> 00:44:05.933
I relapsed and was back,
856
00:44:06.780 --> 00:44:09.630
back to exactly where I was
before doing the same crimes,
857
00:44:09.630 --> 00:44:11.270
doing the same, the same drugs.
858
00:44:11.270 --> 00:44:13.503
I mean, twice as much
drugs, like just, I was-
859
00:44:13.503 --> 00:44:15.000
860
00:44:15.000 --> 00:44:17.510
because I was like,
861
00:44:17.510 --> 00:44:18.983
I messed up again.
862
00:44:20.928 --> 00:44:23.511
(somber music)
863
00:44:26.212 --> 00:44:30.962
I just found out my 13 year
old is in juvenile right now.
864
00:44:32.290 --> 00:44:35.210
He\'s gotten, he\'s same trouble.
865
00:44:35.210 --> 00:44:36.910
He\'s the exact, he\'s just like me.
866
00:44:38.560 --> 00:44:41.143
(somber music)
867
00:44:47.020 --> 00:44:51.220
Even though I\'m back
in jail, I have my GED.
868
00:44:51.220 --> 00:44:52.780
I have help getting the programs
869
00:44:52.780 --> 00:44:54.130
that I need when I get out.
870
00:44:55.800 --> 00:44:58.670
It\'s hard; it\'s hard when
I\'m inside an addition,
871
00:44:58.670 --> 00:45:02.960
that\'s even harder outside,
but I\'m trying, I\'m doing it.
872
00:45:02.960 --> 00:45:05.940
So I write down everything that I\'ve done
873
00:45:05.940 --> 00:45:08.097
that I don\'t want to do again.
874
00:45:08.097 --> 00:45:10.150
(somber music)
875
00:45:10.150 --> 00:45:11.700
876
00:45:11.700 --> 00:45:15.270
two times, three times, four
times, or more than that.
877
00:45:15.270 --> 00:45:19.494
I\'d rather see recidivism,
than the alternative
878
00:45:19.494 --> 00:45:22.101
or one of the alternatives,
which is death.
879
00:45:22.101 --> 00:45:24.770
I can\'t count how many students I\'ve had
880
00:45:24.770 --> 00:45:27.013
that left the facility,
881
00:45:27.860 --> 00:45:31.840
and within a matter of
weeks, sometimes days,
882
00:45:31.840 --> 00:45:34.230
sometimes hours, they\'re no longer living.
883
00:45:34.230 --> 00:45:36.080
because you can\'t sell
884
00:45:36.080 --> 00:45:37.910
a third of a bar so...
885
00:45:37.910 --> 00:45:40.550
have a student that can
886
00:45:40.550 --> 00:45:43.690
walk out that door and can
start walking on a path
887
00:45:43.690 --> 00:45:45.740
that can dramatically change
888
00:45:45.740 --> 00:45:48.223
everything that they\'ve
done before in their life.
889
00:45:50.000 --> 00:45:51.170
What\'s at stake
890
00:45:53.060 --> 00:45:54.700
is...
891
00:45:54.700 --> 00:45:56.363
is everything.
892
00:45:56.363 --> 00:45:58.510
(somber music)
893
00:45:58.510 --> 00:46:00.743
894
00:46:01.640 --> 00:46:03.750
I was angry with my friend.
895
00:46:03.750 --> 00:46:06.310
I told my wrath and what
happened to the wrath?
896
00:46:06.310 --> 00:46:07.290
897
00:46:07.290 --> 00:46:08.350
898
00:46:08.350 --> 00:46:11.300
Some people say this happened
to me and this was horrible,
899
00:46:11.300 --> 00:46:13.050
but this is room for me to grow from this.
900
00:46:13.050 --> 00:46:14.650
And some people say,
901
00:46:14.650 --> 00:46:16.540
this happened to me and this is horrible.
902
00:46:16.540 --> 00:46:18.590
So from now on what?
903
00:46:18.590 --> 00:46:19.830
904
00:46:19.830 --> 00:46:20.663
905
00:46:20.663 --> 00:46:23.009
to say, I don\'t care anymore.
906
00:46:23.009 --> 00:46:23.842
907
00:46:23.842 --> 00:46:24.933
not gonna do this, yeah.
908
00:46:24.933 --> 00:46:25.766
909
00:46:25.766 --> 00:46:26.599
910
00:46:26.599 --> 00:46:27.800
911
00:46:27.800 --> 00:46:31.963
912
00:46:33.150 --> 00:46:36.030
You feel me, and when you,
and that\'s the unknown,
913
00:46:36.030 --> 00:46:38.870
that\'s fear because you
never did it before.
914
00:46:38.870 --> 00:46:40.275
So I stay angry.
915
00:46:40.275 --> 00:46:41.971
916
00:46:41.971 --> 00:46:43.573
know how to explain,
917
00:46:43.573 --> 00:46:45.180
like I feel like I self-destruct.
918
00:46:45.180 --> 00:46:46.180
919
00:46:46.180 --> 00:46:47.790
920
00:46:47.790 --> 00:46:49.250
because it just doesn\'t seem right.
921
00:46:49.250 --> 00:46:51.220
So I\'m so scared to fail
922
00:46:51.220 --> 00:46:52.820
because I\'ll be so disappointed in myself,
923
00:46:52.820 --> 00:46:54.040
and then I\'ll be mad at myself,
924
00:46:54.040 --> 00:46:55.810
and I\'m like my worst enemy,
you know what I\'m saying?
925
00:46:55.810 --> 00:46:58.470
what you\'re capable of,
926
00:46:58.470 --> 00:47:01.890
they will expect more and
more and more from you,
927
00:47:01.890 --> 00:47:03.800
more of your best, and that\'s hard.
928
00:47:03.800 --> 00:47:06.260
I really don\'t fit,
929
00:47:06.260 --> 00:47:08.980
inside the, like the jail, you know,
930
00:47:08.980 --> 00:47:10.930
I\'m trying to feed my brain right now,
931
00:47:10.930 --> 00:47:12.820
moving at a fast pace,
932
00:47:12.820 --> 00:47:15.280
and I just, sometime I just
feel like the odd ball,
933
00:47:15.280 --> 00:47:17.650
you know, out of some of the crews.
934
00:47:17.650 --> 00:47:20.072
understand what I\'m saying?
935
00:47:20.072 --> 00:47:23.210
This is where you are, but
this is not where you fit.
936
00:47:23.210 --> 00:47:24.660
You fit somewhere else.
937
00:47:24.660 --> 00:47:26.300
You are fit for something
938
00:47:26.300 --> 00:47:27.920
a whole lot better than this, correct?
939
00:47:27.920 --> 00:47:28.753
940
00:47:28.753 --> 00:47:29.586
941
00:47:29.586 --> 00:47:32.300
When you find where you
fit, you stay where you fit
942
00:47:32.300 --> 00:47:33.670
and not come back, correct?
943
00:47:33.670 --> 00:47:34.759
944
00:47:34.759 --> 00:47:36.847
945
00:47:39.576 --> 00:47:42.159
(upbeat music)
946
00:47:45.448 --> 00:47:46.920
947
00:47:46.920 --> 00:47:49.130
their accomplishment,
948
00:47:49.130 --> 00:47:50.590
not just get them on a bus,
949
00:47:50.590 --> 00:47:51.860
and get them across the stage,
950
00:47:51.860 --> 00:47:52.693
and give them a diploma.
951
00:47:52.693 --> 00:47:55.149
We really, really want to honor them.
952
00:47:55.149 --> 00:47:59.000
(cheerful chattering)
953
00:47:59.000 --> 00:48:01.420
I have family members that
have been incarcerated.
954
00:48:01.420 --> 00:48:03.820
So it kind of caused me to reflect on
955
00:48:03.820 --> 00:48:05.333
life without education,
956
00:48:06.670 --> 00:48:08.453
life with no hope.
957
00:48:10.400 --> 00:48:11.845
958
00:48:11.845 --> 00:48:16.440
Doors open at 10, just like
last year, I got great news.
959
00:48:16.440 --> 00:48:18.880
They actually fixed the
leaky buckets, remember the-
960
00:48:18.880 --> 00:48:20.890
(cheering and clapping)
961
00:48:20.890 --> 00:48:25.152
962
00:48:25.152 --> 00:48:26.280
(sighing)
963
00:48:26.280 --> 00:48:28.230
964
00:48:29.280 --> 00:48:31.965
Long story short, the
graduation is tomorrow,
965
00:48:31.965 --> 00:48:34.496
and the bus may not be available.
966
00:48:34.496 --> 00:48:37.079
(cars driving)
967
00:48:38.002 --> 00:48:40.585
(upbeat music)
968
00:48:47.527 --> 00:48:50.444
(vehicles driving)
969
00:48:53.573 --> 00:48:56.573
(joyful chattering)
970
00:48:58.568 --> 00:49:01.151
(upbeat music)
971
00:49:12.522 --> 00:49:13.830
972
00:49:13.830 --> 00:49:15.660
you can go ahead and take
your sweatshirts off.
973
00:49:15.660 --> 00:49:16.970
You\'re going to put on your caps and gowns
974
00:49:16.970 --> 00:49:18.313
without your sweatshirts.
975
00:49:19.667 --> 00:49:22.750
(inmates chattering)
976
00:49:25.990 --> 00:49:28.240
(laughing)
977
00:49:30.990 --> 00:49:33.359
Your tassels should be on your left side.
978
00:49:33.359 --> 00:49:34.442
979
00:49:36.350 --> 00:49:38.490
980
00:49:38.490 --> 00:49:39.950
981
00:49:39.950 --> 00:49:40.783
982
00:49:42.701 --> 00:49:45.940
And I\'m going to miss all
of you in the corridor.
983
00:49:45.940 --> 00:49:46.845
984
00:49:46.845 --> 00:49:49.248
985
00:49:49.248 --> 00:49:50.212
(joyous laughter)
986
00:49:50.212 --> 00:49:52.295
987
00:49:53.805 --> 00:49:56.638
(loud chattering)
988
00:49:59.894 --> 00:50:01.354
989
00:50:01.354 --> 00:50:04.849
Face front, face front, face front.
990
00:50:04.849 --> 00:50:08.682
(crowd cheering and clapping)
991
00:50:09.521 --> 00:50:13.812
(Pomp and Circumstance plays)
992
00:50:13.812 --> 00:50:17.735
(continuous clapping)
993
00:50:17.735 --> 00:50:21.709
(crowd cheering and clapping)
994
00:50:21.709 --> 00:50:25.876
(Pomp and Circumstance continues)
995
00:50:39.873 --> 00:50:42.631
(clapping)
996
00:50:42.631 --> 00:50:43.631
997
00:50:45.140 --> 00:50:48.170
998
00:50:48.170 --> 00:50:51.790
Ms. Bravo is one of the
people who runs the show
999
00:50:51.790 --> 00:50:53.810
and everybody is afraid of her.
1000
00:50:53.810 --> 00:50:56.810
(everyone laughing)
1001
00:50:59.040 --> 00:51:03.850
I apologize next, forgiveness
from my mom for scaring her,
1002
00:51:03.850 --> 00:51:06.260
worrying her and embarrassing her
1003
00:51:06.260 --> 00:51:10.350
and not giving her a fair
return on her investment in me
1004
00:51:10.350 --> 00:51:14.162
and for not being the son
that I demand my sons to be.
1005
00:51:14.162 --> 00:51:18.380
(crowd cheering and clapping)
1006
00:51:18.380 --> 00:51:20.580
the last thing on my mind,
1007
00:51:20.580 --> 00:51:22.170
when it should have been the first.
1008
00:51:22.170 --> 00:51:25.252
If I can do it, damn, anybody can.
1009
00:51:25.252 --> 00:51:29.085
(crowd cheering and clapping)
1010
00:51:36.554 --> 00:51:41.290
never completed anything.
1011
00:51:41.290 --> 00:51:43.390
I dropped out of high school.
1012
00:51:43.390 --> 00:51:46.020
I\'ve been to several trade schools,
1013
00:51:46.020 --> 00:51:47.913
but never completed any of them.
1014
00:51:49.330 --> 00:51:51.610
And I\'ve been to four
different drug programs,
1015
00:51:51.610 --> 00:51:53.510
but never finished any of them either.
1016
00:51:55.570 --> 00:51:58.870
But at this stage, in
my life at 59 years old,
1017
00:51:58.870 --> 00:52:01.223
I stand up here and I can say,
1018
00:52:02.107 --> 00:52:04.511
I have finally completed something.
1019
00:52:04.511 --> 00:52:08.344
(crowd cheering and clapping)
1020
00:52:12.236 --> 00:52:15.319
(Lean On Me playing)
1021
00:52:16.830 --> 00:52:21.330
(everyone singing and clapping along)
1022
00:52:30.580 --> 00:52:33.830
(Lean On Me continues)
1023
00:52:58.511 --> 00:53:00.928
(chattering)
1024
00:53:08.489 --> 00:53:11.156
(serious music)
1025
00:53:13.052 --> 00:53:15.885
(chains jingling)
1026
00:53:22.890 --> 00:53:24.953
1027
00:53:25.820 --> 00:53:29.120
while incarcerated, under
all these circumstances,
1028
00:53:29.120 --> 00:53:30.623
they can really do anything.
1029
00:53:32.530 --> 00:53:34.480
I\'m going to miss them in the corridor.
1030
00:53:36.597 --> 00:53:39.764
(contemplative music)
1031
00:53:52.340 --> 00:53:55.469
(bus rumbling)
1032
00:53:55.469 --> 00:53:58.573
(contemplative music continues)
1033
00:53:58.573 --> 00:54:01.740
(basketball bouncing)
1034
00:54:02.860 --> 00:54:04.830
1035
00:54:04.830 --> 00:54:07.653
that I\'m going to be
given a second chance.
1036
00:54:10.460 --> 00:54:14.093
I\'m very happy; my
family is very ecstatic.
1037
00:54:15.900 --> 00:54:18.803
But it\'s a double-edged
sword that come with it.
1038
00:54:20.317 --> 00:54:22.802
(door opening)
1039
00:54:22.802 --> 00:54:24.043
1040
00:54:25.610 --> 00:54:27.007
Alright.
1041
00:54:27.007 --> 00:54:28.589
So,
1042
00:54:28.589 --> 00:54:31.330
(sighing)
1043
00:54:31.330 --> 00:54:33.180
Tomorrow\'s a big day; you\'ll get out.
1044
00:54:35.530 --> 00:54:37.650
Judge took a real big chance with you,
1045
00:54:37.650 --> 00:54:39.160
it was very impressive to him.
1046
00:54:39.160 --> 00:54:41.660
Not many guys could do what you did,
1047
00:54:41.660 --> 00:54:44.020
but you know, the hardest
part is coming up.
1048
00:54:44.020 --> 00:54:47.220
1049
00:54:47.220 --> 00:54:49.430
even just a little bit?
1050
00:54:49.430 --> 00:54:50.263
1051
00:54:50.263 --> 00:54:52.450
where you\'re gonna be
1052
00:54:52.450 --> 00:54:53.872
for the next 18 years.
1053
00:54:53.872 --> 00:54:55.790
I mean, what, your son is what 17 now.
1054
00:54:55.790 --> 00:54:56.623
1055
00:54:56.623 --> 00:55:01.310
won\'t see him until he\'s 35.
1056
00:55:01.310 --> 00:55:02.158
Remember that.
1057
00:55:02.158 --> 00:55:02.991
1058
00:55:02.991 --> 00:55:04.420
1059
00:55:04.420 --> 00:55:05.253
1060
00:55:05.253 --> 00:55:07.120
1061
00:55:07.120 --> 00:55:08.210
what was it, 5 years here?
1062
00:55:08.210 --> 00:55:09.151
1063
00:55:09.151 --> 00:55:09.984
1064
00:55:09.984 --> 00:55:12.240
So for 5 years you got 18
years hanging over your head.
1065
00:55:15.232 --> 00:55:17.982
(metal jingling)
1066
00:55:18.865 --> 00:55:20.865
1067
00:55:22.297 --> 00:55:24.167
I\'m going to walk out this way.
1068
00:55:25.328 --> 00:55:28.745
(uplifting guitar music)
1069
00:55:37.311 --> 00:55:39.894
(door opening)
1070
00:55:42.561 --> 00:55:45.394
(music continues)
1071
00:55:54.792 --> 00:55:57.042
(exhaling)
1072
00:56:04.327 --> 00:56:07.744
(uplifting guitar music)
1073
00:56:59.560 --> 00:57:02.020
1074
00:57:02.020 --> 00:57:04.660
the Corporation for Public Broadcasting
1075
00:57:04.660 --> 00:57:08.660
and the John D and Catherine
T MacArthur Foundation.
1076
00:57:08.660 --> 00:57:11.050
Additional funding was provided by
1077
00:57:11.050 --> 00:57:13.010
the Wyncote foundation
1078
00:57:13.010 --> 00:57:15.903
and the National Endowment for the Arts.
