Longo Mai is a community founded in 1979 in Costa Rica with the support of the United Nations as a humanitarian shelter project to aid a region devastated by civil wars. Over more than 40 years of consistent effort, the community has successfully prevented the construction of hydroelectric plants, halted land erosion, and stopped the advance of pineapple monoculture into the mountain highlands.
The origins of Longo Mai trace back to Europe in 1968. A group of young people from various countries—France, Austria, Switzerland, and primarily Germany—sought an alternative way of life that emphasized autonomy and independence. They began settling in abandoned rural areas across Europe, left behind by farmers migrating to cities. During a time marked by war, one of their goals was to show solidarity with communities in need, which eventually led them to Costa Rica. Today, Longo Mai is a consolidated community with members primarily from El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Europe.

WEBVTT
00:00:08.425 --> 00:00:11.344
We’re in a very,
very serious situation,
00:00:11.428 --> 00:00:14.264
where resources
are increasingly running out,
00:00:14.389 --> 00:00:17.017
and where the direction
that society continues to take
00:00:17.142 --> 00:00:19.936
is towards the edge,
and of falling.
00:00:22.188 --> 00:00:24.566
Why do we need so much wealth?
00:00:24.649 --> 00:00:28.737
Why do we have to extract
so many minerals from the ground?
00:00:28.862 --> 00:00:32.907
Producing so much electricity
isn’t necessary to live well.
00:00:33.533 --> 00:00:36.828
As industrial societies grew,
00:00:36.953 --> 00:00:40.040
and the concept of mass society expanded,
00:00:40.123 --> 00:00:43.126
small communities
lost their presence.
00:00:44.044 --> 00:00:47.088
Living a life of dignity means
fighting for the things
00:00:47.380 --> 00:00:51.134
that are worthwhile so that
future generations can survive.
00:00:52.218 --> 00:00:55.972
We see the need to take care
of the environment as a whole.
00:00:56.056 --> 00:00:59.726
The rivers, the forest;
that’s where we get everything we need.
00:00:59.809 --> 00:01:02.937
It\'s going back to the roots,
to the very basics.
00:02:00.870 --> 00:02:03.164
Welcome to paradise.
00:02:03.540 --> 00:02:07.794
Existing forty years, struggling,
celebrating and fighting.
00:02:08.086 --> 00:02:09.170
Community.
00:02:10.004 --> 00:02:12.257
People of all ages and languages.
00:02:12.423 --> 00:02:14.175
Nahuatls, Lencas, Mayans
00:02:14.592 --> 00:02:16.928
Chorotegas, Bribris, Cabecars.
00:02:17.554 --> 00:02:22.016
Teribes, Borucas, Mulhviertler,
Basler, Appenzeller.
00:02:22.475 --> 00:02:24.853
Our paradise has many hidden places.
00:02:25.478 --> 00:02:28.481
Tall rocks, deep waters,
mighty trees.
00:02:29.107 --> 00:02:31.442
Chiricano, Namaste, Ceibo,
00:02:31.526 --> 00:02:33.570
Guyacán, Guanacaste.
00:02:35.572 --> 00:02:42.787
We’re in southern Costa Rica,
140 kms. south of the capital, San José.
00:02:42.996 --> 00:02:47.292
And we’re in an area
of evergreen forest,
00:02:47.375 --> 00:02:51.296
where very few trees
lose their leaves.
00:02:56.676 --> 00:02:59.512
Well, my name is
Roland Spendlingwimmer,
00:02:59.846 --> 00:03:02.515
I’m Austrian by birth.
00:03:02.599 --> 00:03:06.436
I’ve participated in a project…
for almost…
00:03:06.561 --> 00:03:10.231
Well, most of my life story.
00:03:21.075 --> 00:03:24.454
The Longo Mai cooperatives
started in Europe,
00:03:24.537 --> 00:03:27.707
as a result of the 1968 movement.
00:03:27.832 --> 00:03:30.793
It was a group of young people
from various countries,
00:03:30.835 --> 00:03:34.214
France, Austria, Switzerland,
mainly, and Germany,
00:03:34.589 --> 00:03:38.259
who wanted to choose
a different way of life,
00:03:38.343 --> 00:03:40.595
autonomous, independent...
00:03:40.678 --> 00:03:41.596
And so,
00:03:41.679 --> 00:03:46.517
we started with agricultural cooperatives
in various regions of Europe,
00:03:46.601 --> 00:03:51.356
especially in regions that
had been abandoned, in the mountains,
00:03:51.522 --> 00:03:56.611
by the traditional peasants,
because they had left for cities.
00:04:03.117 --> 00:04:06.287
The idea was also to act in solidarity
00:04:06.329 --> 00:04:10.458
with other vulnerable groups,
that were having problems,
00:04:10.500 --> 00:04:15.088
and that’s how, one day,
we heard about the war in Nicaragua,
00:04:15.255 --> 00:04:18.424
and we tried to do
something to help.
00:04:21.261 --> 00:04:24.472
And it turns out that in \'78,
00:04:24.597 --> 00:04:27.642
we were visited,
in the cooperatives,
00:04:27.725 --> 00:04:31.562
by representatives of Nicaragua’s
Sandinista National Liberation Front.
00:04:31.646 --> 00:04:34.190
Then, they had the idea,
00:04:34.190 --> 00:04:39.487
that with so many Nicaraguan refugees
arriving in Costa Rica,
00:04:39.570 --> 00:04:44.450
why not start a similar project
with these refugees.
00:04:44.742 --> 00:04:48.496
And then, we left
and came here, to Costa Rica,
00:04:48.538 --> 00:04:50.206
to try to help.
00:05:00.925 --> 00:05:07.598
Here are the photos of the very beginning
of this Longo Mai project in Costa Rica.
00:05:07.765 --> 00:05:11.477
You see tents,
where people used to stay,
00:05:11.602 --> 00:05:15.106
because we didn\'t have anything,
there wasn’t even a house, nothing.
00:05:15.189 --> 00:05:19.694
The women
cooked for everyone.
00:05:19.944 --> 00:05:22.280
There were very large pots.
00:05:22.363 --> 00:05:25.116
We all ate together
in that tent.
00:05:27.201 --> 00:05:32.749
The idea was that the refugees
could cultivate their own sustenance.
00:05:33.082 --> 00:05:36.044
At the time,
that was a very original idea.
00:05:36.961 --> 00:05:39.505
Because we also thought that...
00:05:39.589 --> 00:05:43.843
the refugee problem
wasn’t solved with camps,
00:05:43.926 --> 00:05:47.555
where they’re condemned
to do nothing,
00:05:47.638 --> 00:05:52.727
it’s not a life of dignity,
especially when it lasts a long time.
00:05:52.810 --> 00:05:56.272
That was between \'78 and \'79,
00:05:56.397 --> 00:05:59.400
until the victory of
the Sandinista Front in Nicaragua,
00:05:59.525 --> 00:06:04.989
when the majority of refugees
returned to Nicaragua,
00:06:05.031 --> 00:06:08.117
to recover their homes,
their land.
00:06:16.334 --> 00:06:18.211
Then came the war in El Salvador,
00:06:18.252 --> 00:06:22.298
and a wave of
Salvadoran refugees came,
00:06:22.548 --> 00:06:24.675
they were more rural,
00:06:24.842 --> 00:06:30.098
and knew more about
working the land, cultivating.
00:06:47.865 --> 00:06:51.661
My name is Pedro,
I\'m Salvadoran,
00:06:51.828 --> 00:06:53.746
I’m 76 years old.
00:06:54.664 --> 00:06:57.875
I came from El Salvador
because of the war.
00:06:58.000 --> 00:06:59.794
Fourteen years in the war,
it wasn’t easy.
00:06:59.919 --> 00:07:03.548
I lost eight family members.
00:07:03.923 --> 00:07:06.426
My dad and seven siblings.
00:07:10.555 --> 00:07:12.932
War is not a pleasant thing.
00:07:13.307 --> 00:07:15.351
But there are moments
that just happen.
00:07:24.152 --> 00:07:28.364
But without losing sight of what we say,
“clean politics”, which is God.
00:07:28.448 --> 00:07:30.783
I believe in God,
in the Virgin Mary,
00:07:30.908 --> 00:07:33.870
and in an organized people.
That’s my politics.
00:07:37.832 --> 00:07:40.626
Well, I stayed here eleven years,
00:07:41.043 --> 00:07:43.546
during which
I learned many things,
00:07:43.629 --> 00:07:46.007
many good things
for the project.
00:07:46.174 --> 00:07:50.678
I’m still here,
in Longo Mai, happy.
00:07:55.892 --> 00:07:58.102
To be a country man, for me,
00:07:58.227 --> 00:07:59.520
is the most beautiful thing.
00:07:59.687 --> 00:08:01.898
I get up at 4 AM,
00:08:02.231 --> 00:08:05.026
go out, graze the cows,
00:08:05.109 --> 00:08:08.112
come back, do the cleaning,
00:08:08.196 --> 00:08:11.949
from there I go
to give manure to the worms.
00:08:12.074 --> 00:08:14.577
And then I take the rest to the pasture.
00:08:17.205 --> 00:08:19.999
At 7:30 I come back,
make myself some coffee,
00:08:20.082 --> 00:08:22.835
because I’m alone,
since my wife died,
00:08:22.960 --> 00:08:24.045
I drink it.
00:08:24.212 --> 00:08:26.756
At 8, a prayer.
00:08:29.550 --> 00:08:32.553
I’ve already started
making the biodigester,
00:08:32.678 --> 00:08:35.097
and the vermiculture system.
00:08:35.223 --> 00:08:37.934
So the soil is totally different now.
00:08:38.017 --> 00:08:41.229
I’ve had this land
for twenty years, working it.
00:08:41.312 --> 00:08:45.608
And the grass gives the soil energy,
you wouldn’t believe how much.
00:08:45.691 --> 00:08:48.569
And I give it organic matter,
and it gives me grass to graze.
00:08:48.694 --> 00:08:50.279
So, that’s already a change, right?
00:08:50.363 --> 00:08:52.198
That\'s why I\'m convinced
00:08:52.323 --> 00:08:56.661
that if the earth can change,
why can’t I.
00:08:57.620 --> 00:08:59.288
I can too, right?
00:09:12.260 --> 00:09:16.013
My name is Rosa,
but everyone here knows me as Mera.
00:09:16.138 --> 00:09:18.683
I came here in the 80\'s,
more or less.
00:09:18.724 --> 00:09:20.268
I arrived here with my ex-husband,
00:09:20.393 --> 00:09:25.106
he came looking for work,
because it was very scarce where we lived.
00:09:25.189 --> 00:09:28.943
And one year after we moved here,
we separated.
00:09:29.026 --> 00:09:31.487
He left and I stayed here,
and I\'m not leaving.
00:09:31.571 --> 00:09:35.658
Here I live, and here I’ll stay,
to see what God wants of me.
00:09:35.741 --> 00:09:37.994
And I began to work hard,
00:09:38.035 --> 00:09:40.121
so that my kids could go to school,
00:09:40.246 --> 00:09:41.747
and to put food on the table.
00:09:46.460 --> 00:09:49.130
We all have
a patch of land, with crops.
00:09:49.463 --> 00:09:54.677
Here we planted lettuce,
tomato, cilantro, chile.
00:09:55.136 --> 00:09:59.056
We plant cabbage, cauliflower,
we grow all of that here,
00:09:59.140 --> 00:10:01.559
in order to not buy poison.
00:10:01.601 --> 00:10:04.103
I call the market vegetables
“poison”,
00:10:04.103 --> 00:10:06.397
because all of them
are very poisoned.
00:10:09.775 --> 00:10:11.902
I had to start learning to work,
00:10:11.944 --> 00:10:14.864
learn to use knives,
to work in whatever was available.
00:10:14.989 --> 00:10:19.744
I went to clear the land,
to plant things, and that\'s how I learned.
00:10:19.869 --> 00:10:21.746
And now I’ll do everything
that’s asked of me,
00:10:21.787 --> 00:10:26.167
I’ll go to clear the coffee plantations,
weed, prune, harvest,
00:10:26.292 --> 00:10:28.419
fertilize the cane plantations.
00:10:28.669 --> 00:10:30.212
I’ll do any and all work.
00:10:30.296 --> 00:10:31.297
Was that one no good?
00:10:31.672 --> 00:10:33.299
Didn\'t you see it had
no seeds?
00:10:34.175 --> 00:10:35.676
That one\'s out of reach.
00:10:35.718 --> 00:10:37.428
I\'d need a stick.
00:10:38.012 --> 00:10:39.263
Let\'s go.
00:10:43.100 --> 00:10:44.226
You\'re serious.
00:10:44.644 --> 00:10:46.812
My name is Yendry Martínez.
00:10:46.812 --> 00:10:48.689
I came to Longo Mai
months old,
00:10:48.773 --> 00:10:52.818
with my siblings,
we’re five girls and one boy.
00:10:53.027 --> 00:10:56.197
And we settled here
with my mother.
00:11:02.078 --> 00:11:04.997
Mom had to play the man’s role
to get us ahead.
00:11:05.039 --> 00:11:10.628
She was a woman with five children,
and getting us all ahead...
00:11:15.716 --> 00:11:17.301
We walk a lot in the forest,
00:11:17.343 --> 00:11:19.095
so we spend a lot of time together,
00:11:19.136 --> 00:11:22.473
everything we might have lacked,
as children or young people,
00:11:22.473 --> 00:11:24.016
we\'re getting it now.
00:11:24.058 --> 00:11:28.437
So for me, Mom is an example
of a strong woman,
00:11:28.479 --> 00:11:30.815
an empowered woman...
00:11:30.856 --> 00:11:34.026
who wanted to get her children ahead
while always doing the right thing.
00:11:34.110 --> 00:11:36.779
And being as honest
as we can be in life.
00:11:58.300 --> 00:11:59.593
How about that one?
00:11:59.760 --> 00:12:01.721
Dog hospital?
00:12:01.846 --> 00:12:05.558
I always liked
fighting for environmental causes.
00:12:05.599 --> 00:12:09.937
When I was very young, at school
I attended talks on environmental education,
00:12:09.979 --> 00:12:13.566
on medicinal gardens,
or organic gardens,
00:12:13.607 --> 00:12:17.820
I also really liked
working in solid waste collection,
00:12:17.903 --> 00:12:19.530
in recycling.
00:12:24.827 --> 00:12:27.747
We consider the river
to be part of us,
00:12:27.788 --> 00:12:31.250
not an isolated thing,
but something that’s ours.
00:12:31.417 --> 00:12:35.212
And since I was a child,
the fun we always had
00:12:35.296 --> 00:12:36.422
was going to the river.
00:12:36.464 --> 00:12:39.925
So, in summer,
for all the children of the community
00:12:40.050 --> 00:12:43.053
it was the place where
we could have a good time.
00:12:43.179 --> 00:12:46.015
So that’s where
the desire to fight emerges from,
00:12:46.098 --> 00:12:49.602
to keep the river free,
not privatized.
00:12:54.315 --> 00:12:57.568
The fifteen main rivers
of the southern zone,
00:12:57.610 --> 00:12:59.487
they wanted to dam them,
00:12:59.528 --> 00:13:03.657
to use 90% of their currents
to generate electricity,
00:13:03.741 --> 00:13:08.204
including the two rivers
that run through the wildlife refuge here,
00:13:08.245 --> 00:13:10.664
which are called
Convento and Sonador.
00:13:10.706 --> 00:13:16.378
Rivers that come from the mountains,
from heights of 3,000 meters,
00:13:16.420 --> 00:13:20.424
beautiful, crystalline rivers
from the mountains.
00:13:20.591 --> 00:13:24.887
And they wanted to put,
on this slope of the mountain range,
00:13:24.929 --> 00:13:29.391
twenty-seven
hydroelectric companies.
00:13:29.642 --> 00:13:33.687
And a defense organization
was created here in Longo Mai,
00:13:33.687 --> 00:13:36.190
the Living Rivers Committee,
00:13:36.440 --> 00:13:39.819
and all the projects
were stopped thanks to the campaign.
00:13:50.246 --> 00:13:52.873
My name is
Jiri Spendlingwimmer,
00:13:53.040 --> 00:13:55.626
I’ve lived in Costa Rica
for 40 years.
00:14:00.005 --> 00:14:02.258
I arrived at two years old,
00:14:02.341 --> 00:14:05.594
with my parents, who are members
of the Longo Mai cooperatives.
00:14:05.636 --> 00:14:07.638
I got involved in it too.
00:14:08.472 --> 00:14:12.810
And I liked the part of
protecting the forest.
00:14:16.522 --> 00:14:19.692
I have an administrative role
in the community,
00:14:19.733 --> 00:14:21.861
representing the
Longo Mai cooperatives.
00:14:21.986 --> 00:14:25.030
I participate in some organized groups
in the community,
00:14:25.072 --> 00:14:27.199
mainly those that have to do
with the environment.
00:14:27.241 --> 00:14:30.452
And perhaps the main job,
to which I dedicate the most time,
00:14:30.536 --> 00:14:33.247
is taking care of the forest area,
00:14:33.664 --> 00:14:36.625
which is an official wildlife refuge.
00:14:42.381 --> 00:14:46.552
And here we are
in the high part of Longo Mai,
00:14:47.011 --> 00:14:50.514
in the primary forest,
or the mature forest,
00:14:50.890 --> 00:14:54.393
which is a natural treasure
we have here.
00:14:54.435 --> 00:14:57.563
And this is the most remote zone,
let’s say,
00:14:57.646 --> 00:15:00.983
where the forest is most intact.
00:15:06.447 --> 00:15:10.284
When Longo Mai
acquired this estate in 1979,
00:15:10.367 --> 00:15:13.621
it was being used
mainly for livestock.
00:15:13.704 --> 00:15:16.707
Then, Longo Mai acquired it
for agricultural use,
00:15:16.874 --> 00:15:20.794
and also another part
for protection and conservation.
00:15:21.420 --> 00:15:26.091
If Longo Mai hadn’t
acquired and kept this estate,
00:15:26.342 --> 00:15:30.930
it probably would have been bought
for pineapple production.
00:15:31.055 --> 00:15:33.682
Here in the southern zone,
around that same time,
00:15:33.724 --> 00:15:35.309
a transnational company
was established,
00:15:35.351 --> 00:15:37.144
for pineapple production.
00:15:43.901 --> 00:15:48.197
As far as we know, the company
came from Hawaii to Costa Rica.
00:15:48.280 --> 00:15:52.368
It established itself in this area
because the climate, the amount of sunlight,
00:15:52.576 --> 00:15:54.578
was perfect for them.
00:15:54.787 --> 00:15:58.874
Subsequently, they developed
a genetically modified variety,
00:15:58.916 --> 00:16:01.043
that adapts perfectly to this zone,
00:16:01.085 --> 00:16:04.630
and it makes the pineapple
sweeter, more uniform,
00:16:04.713 --> 00:16:07.341
with a more attractive color.
00:16:13.847 --> 00:16:17.351
The company had planted
in the lower part of the valley,
00:16:17.434 --> 00:16:20.312
but at one point
the pineapple was selling so well,
00:16:20.354 --> 00:16:21.981
and it was
such a profitable business,
00:16:22.064 --> 00:16:24.316
that they began to expand
towards the mountains.
00:16:26.443 --> 00:16:27.778
So by doing that,
00:16:27.945 --> 00:16:32.199
the tilt of the earth
and the high precipitation
00:16:32.241 --> 00:16:36.078
cause a huge runoff
of materials, waste,
00:16:36.328 --> 00:16:39.665
and a lot of erosion
and sedimentation in the winter,
00:16:39.790 --> 00:16:41.917
and agrochemical contamination.
00:16:42.084 --> 00:16:45.254
Later, in the summer,
the problem is the opposite:
00:16:45.337 --> 00:16:47.631
water is heavily extracted
from the rivers
00:16:47.715 --> 00:16:49.842
to irrigate the pineapples.
00:16:50.217 --> 00:16:52.386
So the rivers dry up a lot.
00:16:55.723 --> 00:16:58.767
Why can the company
take out so much water?
00:16:58.809 --> 00:17:01.895
It has 98%
of concessioned water.
00:17:01.979 --> 00:17:04.231
Why were they allowed
to plant pineapples
00:17:04.356 --> 00:17:06.734
in the high, very steep lands,
00:17:06.859 --> 00:17:10.320
if this would affect
the region tremendously?
00:17:10.362 --> 00:17:11.989
There’s been silence.
00:17:12.239 --> 00:17:13.657
It’s been very difficult.
00:17:13.824 --> 00:17:17.077
Because they also create
3,000 direct jobs, and more.
00:17:17.327 --> 00:17:20.080
It’s about economics.
00:17:23.459 --> 00:17:26.879
If there’s silence, it’s because
there hasn’t been any response.
00:17:26.962 --> 00:17:29.673
And Longo Mai
is attempting to respond:
00:17:29.882 --> 00:17:33.886
progress is more about
a simpler life.
00:17:34.011 --> 00:17:38.348
We’ve been raising
very fundamental questions for 30 years,
00:17:38.515 --> 00:17:43.228
and trying, along with
members of the movements,
00:17:43.312 --> 00:17:45.689
to promote a just transition.
00:18:02.831 --> 00:18:07.503
Here where the night is crickets singing
00:18:09.630 --> 00:18:13.926
And the stones sing my destiny to the river
00:18:14.134 --> 00:18:23.352
It\'s a bend in that river
Standing on a stone on the path
00:18:29.024 --> 00:18:32.861
Now I\'m cleaning the shores
00:18:35.280 --> 00:18:40.077
Of this river that, expanding in the mist,
00:18:40.327 --> 00:18:43.997
Already knows the sea of its retreat
00:18:44.289 --> 00:18:49.461
The fury of its waves
And how ethereal its foam
00:18:49.628 --> 00:18:53.799
Even without having reached
its destination
00:18:56.844 --> 00:18:59.263
I step on it twice
00:18:59.346 --> 00:19:06.478
The river I dream of
Or this same river flows
00:19:06.520 --> 00:19:09.398
Mossy and different
00:19:09.565 --> 00:19:16.655
Stepping on my blood
Washing the wound of life
00:19:16.822 --> 00:19:21.827
Leaving my dreams sharp
00:19:23.620 --> 00:19:25.998
My name is Guadalupe Urbina.
00:19:25.998 --> 00:19:29.042
I’ve dedicated my whole life
to working in the arts.
00:19:29.126 --> 00:19:32.921
Writing, composing, singing, painting.
00:19:33.797 --> 00:19:36.300
I’ve lived in Longo Mai
for ten years now.
00:19:41.305 --> 00:19:44.808
Ten years ago,
I decided to leave the city,
00:19:45.017 --> 00:19:48.520
because I had lost
my ability to connect
00:19:48.604 --> 00:19:51.607
with so many things
that seemed superficial to me.
00:19:51.732 --> 00:19:54.818
I had come from living
many years in Europe.
00:19:55.110 --> 00:19:59.031
And for me,
I\'d had enough of cities.
00:19:59.364 --> 00:20:02.367
Enough of that lifestyle
and consumption.
00:20:02.492 --> 00:20:06.538
I was overwhelmed by the idea
that you are what you buy.
00:20:06.830 --> 00:20:09.708
And working
just to earn money and pay bills.
00:20:10.417 --> 00:20:11.752
That\'s how I got here.
00:20:19.134 --> 00:20:22.429
I think there’s an older teacher here,
which is the Jungle.
00:20:22.554 --> 00:20:25.682
And she teaches us,
through all her different ecosystems.
00:20:27.392 --> 00:20:30.479
It’s an ecosystem of abundance.
00:20:30.771 --> 00:20:32.898
It’s an ecosystem of beauty.
00:20:33.065 --> 00:20:34.733
Here you understand eternity.
00:20:34.858 --> 00:20:40.530
It’s an eternity of a cycle of reconstruction,
of constant regeneration.
00:20:40.656 --> 00:20:45.035
Trees are born, they fall, they feed
the living beings below, mushrooms come,
00:20:45.160 --> 00:20:48.997
all that, the meaning of that for me,
is truly eternity.
00:20:49.081 --> 00:20:54.544
It’s a dynamic eternity,
not a fixed thing up in the sky.
00:20:54.670 --> 00:20:56.296
It\'s here.
00:20:57.756 --> 00:21:00.926
Here... you won\'t die of thirst.
00:21:01.385 --> 00:21:07.182
There are mango, lemons,
bananas, cacao, coffee.
00:21:07.307 --> 00:21:11.687
There’s abundance here,
and that’s a privilege that we’ve earned,
00:21:11.770 --> 00:21:13.146
by resisting,
00:21:13.272 --> 00:21:17.067
by not having a lot of the privileges
out there, lots of things.
00:21:17.109 --> 00:21:18.819
Here we don\'t have things,
00:21:18.860 --> 00:21:22.322
but we have this wonder,
we have clean air.
00:21:35.961 --> 00:21:39.506
I’ve always said
that Longo Mai is an island.
00:21:39.631 --> 00:21:43.677
Even the weather here,
it rains more, everything is cooler.
00:21:43.760 --> 00:21:47.764
We don\'t have much pollution,
the forest itself protects us.
00:21:48.557 --> 00:21:50.058
Because here I feel calm,
00:21:50.100 --> 00:21:52.144
I plant anything here,
and I eat it,
00:21:52.185 --> 00:21:55.188
and I share with the neighbors,
with whoever comes or is here.
00:21:55.314 --> 00:21:58.066
I feel like this was mine,
I feel that...
00:21:58.150 --> 00:22:01.820
a document, a paper,
is actually useless.
00:22:03.196 --> 00:22:05.490
Longo Mai is a beehive.
00:22:05.657 --> 00:22:07.326
Let’s take care of it wisely.
00:22:07.743 --> 00:22:10.954
Because the bees
live in the same hive
00:22:11.079 --> 00:22:13.498
and they work,
they’re all organized,
00:22:13.623 --> 00:22:16.168
they defend each other,
and live happily.
00:22:16.918 --> 00:22:21.048
It’s helped a lot to have
people from very difficult paths here
00:22:21.173 --> 00:22:23.258
that serve as guides.
00:22:23.342 --> 00:22:25.344
They remind us
00:22:25.427 --> 00:22:28.847
the importance of discussing,
of addressing disagreements,
00:22:28.889 --> 00:22:30.640
but in a spirit of compassion.
00:22:30.682 --> 00:22:34.561
Longo Mai, then,
is like an actual, physical place,
00:22:34.603 --> 00:22:37.064
but also a spiritual place.
00:22:38.148 --> 00:22:40.776
And the community,
as it exists today,
00:22:41.026 --> 00:22:44.279
is the example
that’s playing a role
00:22:44.363 --> 00:22:48.617
in so many social conflicts
that we have in Costa Rica,
00:22:48.700 --> 00:22:51.536
on the environmental
and social front.
00:22:51.995 --> 00:22:53.747
And I think that, in this sense,
00:22:53.789 --> 00:22:58.377
it’s an alternative that we should
think of developing elsewhere,
00:22:58.418 --> 00:23:00.462
and that we defend.
00:23:02.631 --> 00:23:04.216
Yes to communities.
00:23:04.758 --> 00:23:06.676
Yes to their creative ability.
00:23:06.802 --> 00:23:09.679
Yes to people
who dare to leave the cities
00:23:09.763 --> 00:23:11.765
and make a life change.
00:23:11.848 --> 00:23:14.226
To invent a new world.
00:23:14.810 --> 00:23:19.815
Longo Mai, long life, or \"pure life\",
as Costa Ricans say.
