The last half-century has seen the disappearance of the American family farm, and the grave cultural and environmental impact of the resulting suburban sprawl. This film is a 14-year document of this transition, through the personal experience of two families who love the same plot of land in its different reincarnations.

WEBVTT
00:00:16.767 --> 00:00:18.366
We were watching
00:00:18.367 --> 00:00:20.329
all of the buildings going down.
00:00:20.330 --> 00:00:23.669
The house was the last
thing that went down.
00:00:23.670 --> 00:00:25.132
Didn\'t take long.
00:00:25.133 --> 00:00:28.600
It was quite an emotional thing for Harlow
00:00:28.601 --> 00:00:30.733
because he lived there all of his life.
00:00:30.734 --> 00:00:35.366
But we knew it was time.
00:00:35.367 --> 00:00:40.666
We just got in the truck
and didn\'t look back.
00:00:40.667 --> 00:00:41.567
I don\'t know. I don\'t know.
00:00:41.567 --> 00:00:42.467
Say it.
00:00:42.468 --> 00:00:43.800
I don\'t know how to say it.
00:00:43.801 --> 00:00:45.333
It wasn\'t. It wasn\'t good
00:00:45.334 --> 00:00:49.132
but that\'s the way it had to be.
00:00:49.133 --> 00:00:52.329
Well, you knew it was going to happen.
00:00:52.330 --> 00:00:56.234
The place was gone. That was the end of it.
00:01:34.767 --> 00:01:36.466
I know that it has afforded us
00:01:36.467 --> 00:01:38.633
and the 300 some other
00:01:38.634 --> 00:01:40.533
houses in this subdivision
00:01:40.534 --> 00:01:42.834
a wonderful opportunity to place roots.
00:01:52.300 --> 00:01:54.933
The land isn\'t ours necessarily.
00:01:54.934 --> 00:01:56.500
God put it here if you will.
00:01:56.501 --> 00:01:58.366
And we\'re just using it.
00:01:58.367 --> 00:02:00.299
The Cagwins were using it before us,
00:02:00.300 --> 00:02:03.132
and we\'re using it now. And
someone else will probably
00:02:03.133 --> 00:02:06.400
use it somewhere down the
road for something else.
00:02:25.634 --> 00:02:27.833
Harlow was a young kid
00:02:27.834 --> 00:02:29.399
when he started milking cows.
00:02:29.400 --> 00:02:32.366
And then he just helped
out wherever he could,
00:02:32.367 --> 00:02:34.329
and then his father got sick.
00:02:34.330 --> 00:02:37.199
And he just took the farm over.
00:02:37.200 --> 00:02:39.233
And he continued working
00:02:39.234 --> 00:02:40.967
until he was
00:02:40.968 --> 00:02:44.669
80, I guess.
00:02:44.670 --> 00:02:48.299
The work on the farm was hard work.
00:02:48.300 --> 00:02:50.566
Harlow is a very strong man,
00:02:50.567 --> 00:02:53.633
and he could do a lot of things.
00:02:53.634 --> 00:02:56.999
Of course, I couldn\'t do what he could do.
00:02:57.000 --> 00:02:59.400
But I did what I could.
00:03:35.167 --> 00:03:38.433
The kids are the reason that
I get up in the morning.
00:03:38.434 --> 00:03:39.600
This home is
00:03:39.601 --> 00:03:43.433
the reason that we enjoy everything we
00:03:43.434 --> 00:03:44.999
do together as a family.
00:03:45.000 --> 00:03:48.199
I have found my home,
00:03:48.200 --> 00:03:49.900
and it will take a lot
00:03:49.901 --> 00:03:52.167
for me to move from this house.
00:04:27.567 --> 00:04:31.367
The saddest thing in the farm
was when the cattle left.
00:04:33.334 --> 00:04:36.434
They were hauled in semi-trailers.
00:04:37.400 --> 00:04:39.634
It was a bad day.
00:04:42.670 --> 00:04:43.867
We liked our animals.
00:04:43.868 --> 00:04:45.501
We just enjoyed them.
00:04:46.667 --> 00:04:51.600
You have to enjoy them to work with them.
00:04:51.601 --> 00:04:54.700
Maybe this stuff shouldn\'t be sold.
I don\'t know.
00:04:54.701 --> 00:04:56.433
Once a house goes up there\'s,
00:04:56.434 --> 00:05:01.234
you don\'t get no more beef or corn.
It\'s gone.
00:05:01.235 --> 00:05:09.235
The particular farmland that
I\'ll miss seeing the most is the
00:05:26.000 --> 00:05:28.333
is the cornfields that were
right behind Ed\'s parents\'
00:05:28.334 --> 00:05:30.500
because now it\'s a Walmart,
00:05:30.501 --> 00:05:33.099
but I\'m at that Walmart every other day.
00:05:33.100 --> 00:05:36.666
So, you know, I can complain
that the cornfields are gone
00:05:36.667 --> 00:05:38.566
and that it\'s disappearing,
00:05:38.567 --> 00:05:41.734
but I\'m using what they are putting there.
00:05:42.734 --> 00:05:44.900
It\'s the next step and the next generation
00:05:44.901 --> 00:05:47.700
that farmland changes to suburban.
00:05:47.701 --> 00:05:50.867
And you still see the
same qualities of life
00:05:50.868 --> 00:05:55.400
even though it\'s no longer farmland.
00:06:21.334 --> 00:06:23.333
Where is the Cagwin Drive?
00:06:23.334 --> 00:06:26.329
It\'s down this way. Right?
00:06:26.330 --> 00:06:28.199
Yeah. No.
00:06:28.200 --> 00:06:29.733
You know you\'re telling me stories.
00:06:29.734 --> 00:06:31.330
Well, where are we at?
00:06:36.634 --> 00:06:38.933
I\'m right, it was on Cagwin.
00:06:38.934 --> 00:06:40.667
Cagwin goes through. This goes down.
00:06:42.133 --> 00:06:43.466
Yeah, you\'re right.
00:06:43.467 --> 00:06:45.533
And this is Cagwin Drive.
00:06:45.534 --> 00:06:48.167
We\'re on Cagwin Drive? Yeah
00:06:52.000 --> 00:06:54.333
I furnish the information and that\'s it.
00:06:54.334 --> 00:06:55.999
Well, this is Amanda. Amanda lives here.
00:06:56.000 --> 00:06:57.132
Hi, Amanda.
00:06:57.133 --> 00:07:00.400
Hi. Nice to meet you. Nice to meet you.
