In a room behind a large church in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina, a group of people meet every Friday evening, sharing their stories. Their lives have been directly or indirectly destroyed by betting and gambling. Some have gambled away their money themselves, others have family members who are addicted. On Friday evening they talk and listen to each other, trying to heal their wounds and create a new reality for themselves.
“To achieve that you have to believe, not only in God, but also in your fellow person,” says Marko Romić, the psychologist who guides this group. Not an easy task in a city where the Bosnian war has left deep scars and where divisions between populations based on religion and nationality are still palpable. Yet, in this group for gambling addicts they find solidarity, despite all differences, even when temptations and social pressure remain great. Will these people, who have lost more or less everything they owned, persevere and free themselves from their guilt and grief?
FORGIVE US OUR DEBTSis part of a documentary series on the Ten Commandments, produced by DOXY Films and EOdocs, in which ten filmmakers each give their take on one of the Commandments. Sergej Kreso ventured into the third commandment: ‘Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.’
