The Aguilar siblings, descendants of the renowned yet overlooked Aguilar Quartet, embark on a journey that intertwines family legacy with historical exploration. Discovering the soundtrack of Argentina's sole surrealist film, “Tararira: Today's Bohemia,” from 1936, the new Aguilar Quartet, now led by a woman, delves into a transcontinental odyssey between Argentina and Spain.

“Tararira: Today's Bohemia” by Benjamín Fondane, though shrouded in legend, becomes a tangible link to the past for the Aguilar family. As they traverse between continents, they unearth the untold stories of their forebears, exiled Spanish musicians navigating the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War.

Directed by Argentine filmmaker Amparo Aguilar, Defect offers a surreal yet lighthearted lens into the complexities of history and memory. With a playful approach, Aguilar grapples with the legacy of her family and the broader socio-political context of Spain's transition from the Republic to dictatorship.
