Family Album

On the verge of becoming a father, Alex discovers a box of unsettling family photographs in storage: images that hint at his mother's infidelity and suggest his retired military father's involvement in acts of violence during Peru's internal armed conflict. His search for answers leads him to a town still scarred by that history, forcing him to confront the true, intricate story behind his family album.

As Alex uncovers another version of his parents’ story, he must reconsider the narratives he inherited about his absent mother and the father who raised him. At the same time, his impending fatherhood forces him to confront a more personal question: what do we inherit from our parents, and what can we choose not to pass on?

Filmed by Joel Calero in luminous black and white, Family Album explores family, memory, parenthood, responsibility, and the unresolved consequences of Peru’s internal armed conflict. The film connects intimate family history with the larger question of how societies remember—and live with—their past.

Family Album closes Calero's Trilogy of Memory, a planned political-film trilogy focused on the years of internal conflict and political violence that shook Peru between 1980 and 2000. The film follows One Last Afternoon and The Most Feared Skin.
